    Kale powder is a great thing to add to soups, stews and sauces, or smoothies. You can make a wedding soup with it too yum. So excited to see the harvesting season start. All the hard work paying off. Enjoy your channel sooo much. I also love old cook books

    Oh my goodness, what lovely lettuces, kale, herbs, so much more. That heat in your area is extremely unusual isn't it? So glad to hear about the Bees Honey surviving all the stuff. Imagine the cost retail if you bought that much honey, and even more special, it is from your very own Bee Hives. RAW and Healthy!😊

    Lovely to see the hayfield. It’s a wonderful feeling when the hay is in ready for winter: Happy, satisfying and oh so thankful.
    We also infuse chive flowers every year for salad dressing and with mint for the base of bbq lamb dressing. I think I’ve mentioned before about cutting back French tarragon and placing it in white vinegar to infuse for a quick flavoured hollandaise or bearnaise sauce. I plonk it into quart jars, stalks ‘n all. It’s the most used infused vinegar we use in our kitchen because having found a way to make the sauces without taking so much time and fiddling around with so many pots and bowls to wash up just before serving up, it’s a kitchen/meal game changer. Not sure if Russian tarragon works as well as French. If you can get French and take cuttings to grow over summer in good sized pots, you could store the pots in your root cellar (cut back to third or more of its size) to go dormant over winter and bring back out in spring. Some of mine survive the winter in ground (UK). I think it’s acclimated. But I always take cuttings and put a couple of pots into the shed just in case our winter gets half as cold as yours. 💚

    all the recipes come from My Mom and our dairy farm unless stated otherwise
    In the summer we would have family and friends come over for a Bar-be-cue which included Barbecue meat from animals we raised and butcherer ourselves. The old fashion Ice Cream cranks (at least 2) with old towels for one of the kids to set on and several people to turn the crank. After my Mom died I took her Brown recipe box and any other special recipes and saved them to my Recipe files. I also took her favorite recipes from all her Farm Journal cookbooks and put in my file. Along with a Family Recipe book I made years ago of each of my brothers(3) and sisters (2) and mine and made it for each of my brothers & sisters and their children and my Mom for Christmas presents. I am so glad I did because both my parents are dead and my oldest sister and 2 of my brothers. Now my 3 teen grandchildren will have those recipes.
    Recipe for: Butter Pecan Ice Cream From the Kitchen of: Esther Alderson
    Ingredients: 1/2 cup sugar
    1 envelope Knox gelatin
    1 Tbsp. cornstarch
    4 cups milk
    3 beaten eggs
    Ingredients: 1 Tbsp. vanilla
    1/3 cup butter (cut up)
    2 cups whipping cream
    1 cup packed brown sugar
    3/4 cup chopped toasted pecans
    Recipe instructions: Combine sugars, gelatin and cornstarch in large pan. Stir in half of milk. Cook till mixture thickens. Stir one cup of mixture into eggs yolks. Return to pan, cook 2 minutes. Stir in butter and whipped whipping cream and pecans. Cool and freeze.
    Chocolate Ice Cream makes 1 gallon From the Kitchen of: Esther Alderson
    Ingredients: 2 cups sugar
    1/4 cup flour
    1/2 tsp. salt
    4 squares (1 oz. each) chocolate, cut up
    Ingredients: 4 cups milk
    4 eggs, beaten
    2 cups (1 pint) heavy cream
    2 cups Half & Half
    2 Tbsp. Vanilla
    Recipe instructions: Combine sugar, flour, salt and chocolate pieces. Gradually stir in milk. Cook and stir over low heat until thickened and chocolate has melted. Add a small amount of hot mixture to eggs and mix well. Return to hot mixture. Cook and stir 1 minute. Remove form heat and chill.
    Add heavy cream, half & half and vanilla to custard. Turn into 1 gallon freezer can. Freeze as directed with your freezer.
    Four-Three Ice Cream Makes 1 gallon From the Kitchen of: Esther Alderson
    Ingredients: 3 cups heavy cream
    3 cups milk
    3 cups sugar
    3 cups pureed ripe strawberries
    Juice of 1/2 of a lemon
    1/2 tsp. salt
    Recipe instructions: Combine heavy cream, milk, sugar, and salt. Turn into a 1 gallon freezer can and churn-freeze 10 minutes.
    Mix lemon juice with pureed strawberries.
    Open freezer can and add pureed strawberries. close container and continue freezing as directed with your freezer.
    Fresh Strawberry Ice Cream Makes: 1 gallon From the Kitchen of: Esther Alderson
    Prepare Vanilla Ice Cream without adding vanilla. Freeze until mixture starts to thicken. Open freezer and stir in 1 1/2 cups fresh crushed lightly sweetened strawberries. Continue freezing until hard.
    Fresh Peach Ice Cream: Prepare Vanilla Ice Cream using 1 Tbsp. vanilla and 2 tsp. almond extract. Freeze until mixture starts to thicken. Open freezer and stir in 1 1/2 cups fresh crushed lightly sweetened peaches. Continue freezing till hard.
    Fresh Strawberry Ice Cream - woodland paper (1990's) From the Kitchen of: Esther Alderson
    Ingredients: 4 cups Half & Half
    4 cups pureed fresh strawberries (or frozen strawberries, thawed)
    1 cup sugar
    1 tbsp. vanilla extract
    Ingredients: 2 eggs
    1 cup sugar
    1/4 tsp. salt
    3 cups whipping cream
    Recipe instructions: Combine pureed fresh strawberries, half & half, 1 cup sugar, and vanilla; cover and refrigerate.
    Beat eggs 2 minutes on high speed in a mixing bowl, Add 1 cup sugar and the salt to the eggs and beat for an additional 2 minutes, Stir in whipping cream. Transfer to saucepan and cook over medium heat until mixture begins to simmer, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Cover and refrigerate 2 hours. Thoroughly combine chilled strawberries and custard mixture using wire whisk. freeze according to manufacturers directions. All the recipes come from My Mom and our dairy farm unless stated otherwise

    Chelsea I just. Grew now eating Alfa Alfa sprouts in a jar so yummy and green compared to brought never grown them so excited to eat them with omelet’s and sandwiches over next week then I’ll do more seeds love how u talk to your pets they have feelings just like us

    Thousand head kale is similar to that kale! So tender even when the leaves get large. We get the seeds from Baker Creek.

    We mow a couple of acres sometimes three with scythes… yeah it takes much longer… then we rake into wind rows…. Most of our land is way to steep for a tractor and mower etc.

    One of my absolutely favorite meals is wilted greens topped with vinegar (I have a friend who makes vinegar shrubs), a little sweet fruit like pieces of orange or strawberry, a little crunchy nut like slivered almonds and then a nummy crunchy bread spread with a goat cheese like Boursin. Absolute heaven!

    Thai basil is so aromatic and beautiful. It’s actually the main secret of my fried rice recipe. I put loads in the pan frying process as well as some extra fresh at the end 😇

    Hi Chelsea. I too have walking onions I really like them. They are mild onion taste. I put in soups. I made pesto recently it was a little pungent but I added a few drop of lime juice and that was a game changer. Enjoy

    My goodness, your hay looks fantastic! Our hay (timothy/brome) isn't as full and luscious, but it's over 6' tall. Letting our 100# shepherd run in it is an adventure, he gets lost like he's in a corn maze and can't find his way out. Can't wait for ours to be mowed.

    Those blades can be sharpened for a long time. Cheaper to learn to sharpen than replacing whole mower.

    I also have not seen cabbage moths, did you know they find brasicas when heat stress makes them give off strong scent. this cooler spring/early summer and wet making my garden very different looking, bush beans, peppers, and tomatoes far behind normal but potatoes asparagus kale are huge already. My potatoes plants are bigger now then they got all last year lol.

    I use swiss chard a lot of times for cabbage rolls if the leaves are on the large side, and I was thinking those leaves from your abundance kale would probably work too. I have never seen that type of kale before and must try to get some seeds for myself.

    Great harvest! I love garden kale. Last year I had so much but didn’t have much room to put it in the freezer. So, I decided to can it. I use the canned kale for when I make Zuppa Toscana. A pint is the perfect amount for a big pot of that soup.

    That hay is looking great and the heat and dry weather is right on time. I really like that new lightweight wheelbarrow, much easier to bring stuff back to the house.
    Sad about your bees but the honey and wax is wonderful.
    Just curious about the name of one of your plants. It sounds like you said Dark Bore but is it Doukhobor? I'm in BC so that's what I think of but the pronunciation is a bit different.
    Very nice new vac sealer, they have such good products!

    I do not cover my peppers when we get into the 50s at night in upstate NY and they are fine and they are also outside.

    I started my first ever little garden this year and cabbage worms decimated my one little broccoli plant. I found a hone remedy of putting orange peel in water over night and then add a coupke tsp of dish soap and that seems to have gotten rid if them in the first application. Spray once a week and after rain i think it said. Not sure if my broccoli will come back.

    You can bale after only one day of drying? Wow! I remember we had to wait sometimes a week sometimes a little more.

      Right. You mow, then rake then bale. I remember when we mowed, then raked, then raked again & maybe even a third time before it was dry enough to bale. There was cow hay & horse hay & we didn't want a barn fire so it needed to be very dry. I think it's great that you can bale after just the one day of drying on day 3.
