It’s Rachel from That 1870s Homestead, and today we’re diving into some hands-on gardening! 🌿🌱 Join me as I take you on a quick tour of my garden and share some important updates and lessons learned. With the 4th of July weekend approaching, I’m busy harvesting my green cabbage to prevent those dreaded split heads. I’ll show you both the successes and challenges I’ve faced, including a few cabbages that might have had an unexpected visitor! 🐇
We’ll explore my favorite weed management techniques, like using the “chop and drop” method to turn those pesky weeds into beneficial mulch. I’ll talk about battling crabgrass in my pepper and wheat patches, and how effective a good weed barrier can be in keeping things under control.

My tip for weed control is that when I plant, I take flakes of straw and put a thick layer around the plants and in-between plants . Straw holds moisture, and when the weeds try and grow thru straw, they tend to be smaller and easy to pull. Then I take the weeds and do what you are doing, and that helps also like you say. When I use straw I just till it into the soil in the fall or spring. You will get wheat plants, but I cut them and use them in a craft project. You can also cut the wheat and put it back into your soil or compost it. It works for me. I'm 65 years old and I've been doing this for about 15 years now. Hope this helps. Happy gardening.

I had several cabbages split open on me this year and I just chopped them, washed them, and ate them anyway. They tasted just as good as the pretty cabbages.
Sorry Rachael I refuse to have weeds which are just another chore for me so I have followed Charles Dowding No Dig method in all my raised beds (once established) & have the most amazing WEED FREE garden. I have been happily gardening now for over 12yrs. Cheers Denise- Australia

Onions and soil between beds that are not covered by mulch need to be weeded. A few weeds here and there in the mulched veggie beds.
Surprise to me is potatoes in ground that was turned before planting because winter was so wet. No mulch or weeds. First time doing potatoes in ground.
Rachel if you just cut the head of the cabbage off and leave your roots and leaves you will get 3-6 more heads off of it. I planted 6 cabbage plants, cut off and ate 5 of them and left the roots and leaves and now I have 3 to 6 heads growing again on each of the plants. We love cabbage! Love your videos ❤
The pure sound of crispy, crunchy cabbage while harvesting is unbeatable. You cannot get this joyful sound in a supermarket.😊
TRY THIS with your carrots. Put your seeds in a bucket/container and add some sand. Mix well. You will now be able to see where they get scattered and it will reduce how close they are. The lighter you cast, the less thinning you will have to do...if this makes sense....

Fun update!!! Like your pull and drop method that is a great idea👍 The garden looks beautiful and very productive! No apologies needed around your video schedule. Adjusting to retirement is huge!!! Like you, I became 10 times busier when I retired a couple years ago… I actually had to slow my roll a little bit😂 You will sort it out and it’s fun to be along for your journey!!! Rachel I use weed fabric for green beans and it works very well. Just burn small holes where you want them. I put up a tall fence for pole beans n burn the holes on each side of the climbing fence. For bush beans I do the same only i don't trellis them. I stagger the holes. No weeds. If u need to Fertilize during the season I just sprinkle a bit In the hole by the root . The only issue is once u burn a hole your committed..I just use that section of fabric each year for green beans. Same one for potato, onions zucchini ect...my back can't take all the weeding any more and I love this system. Happy gardening. Things look great!!❤
We use our lawn grass clippings all around plants for weed control - no chemicals on lawn obviously. Works fantastic!!
I use pull-and-drop onto my walkways throughout the year. Let the plants die and dry out and contribute to the soil and mulch.
I use triple shredded mulch. $30/yd. in town. I suggest keep covering the planted areas again with decomposed wood chips once the plants have established themselves and after you’ve weeded. The wood chips aren’t going to take nitrogen if on top of the soil. Works GREAT on onions, okra, leeks, beets, corns, and any uncovered row seeded crops planted in soil.
You could also use some of the large cabbage leaves to stuff in the holes to cover them. Maybe a couple layers of leaves and stuff them under the ground cover?

My (the same) Dixondale slips got a late planting last week in May when my community garden finally opened. Mine are just starting to establish decent shoots now. Gave everything a shot of Alaska 5-1-1 to catch up a little. Re-mulched them after the initial weeding.

The holes in the weed fabric can be cover by cutting a piece of cardboard a little bigger than the hole, fold it in half, slip it in the hole then spread it out under the hole making sure it covers the ground. The weed with the pretty blue flowers is chicory which puts down a tap root. There are ways of taking that root, roasting it to make a coffee like drink.
My kale is looking really good because it is planted between onions and garlic. That was a neat surprise.
The cabbage looked great! I need to do what you did around my pepper plants. When the cicadas were so bad here, I didn't want to go outside and get attacked by them lol.
Yikes! Do they bite? We don’t have them here.
I have reverted to thick woodchip mulch. We did the cardboard like you did but in 3 layers, then we re-add wood chips 8 to 10 inches every other year. Almost completely killed off the grass and weeds. Then planting in the chips in the beds has worked wonderfully.
Hi Rachel. Garden is looking great, your cabbage looks like it may be splitting from to much rain. Could you show us more of setting up your farm stand and what to sell? Congratulations on your "Retirement???" I happy your getting to live your dream.
My onions did that already too, I think it was like you said all the rain and wind, I had some trying to rot so glad I pulled them because of how hot it is. I know I need to fertilize my onions a lot better next year, mine didn't any bigger than a tennis ball and I was hoping for big ones. I always grow my carrots for my fall garden because if they can go thru a frost it makes them so sweet, they are so good. I did 8-ounce ground cloth and mulch for some of my garden and then did heavy clean straw on my potatoes and at the base of my green beans and tomatoes which really seems to work very well. Pretty girl you could always do a daily planner or calendar on things you hope to accomplish that day, and if you don't get it all done don't fret over it there's always another day waiting. My biggest weed issues are purslane, lambs quarters and a few I haven't identify. Every once in awhile I pill the edible ones and cook them into my greens pot.
We use the pull and drop in my mom's garden. Definitely helps suppress the weeds.
Your cabbages look beautiful and nice that you shared some with local wildlife. Too bad the bunnies don't eat the weeds! This might sound weird but I wouldn't mind watching a video of the weed pulling. The sound of weeds being pulled out with the roots is very satisfying ASMR.
It is so disappointing when veggies split Rachel after all that hard work you and your guy did to protect your cabbage. Hope you two had fun times over the 4th 🎆.
I didn't plant in my big garden this year. Between the weeds and the critters kinda gave up. Did plant in pots and like that much better. Have onions and potatoes in the ground only. The garden looks great! Thanks for sharing!!
My thoughts on 26:37 bugs eating my non food plants is that’s it’s a “natural pruning” it’s just pruning a human didn’t need to do! All pruning is, in my opinion, is humans removing plant matter bugs never got to. Love your content and I’m so glad to see what the future holds!
I found that geraniums keep the Japanese Beatles and most of the wasps away from my yard. I have 2 big plants with my strawberries and elderberry plants one on my side porch and one on my front porch to keep the wasps away. It’s working for me. I’m in N E Alabama.

Those cabbage heads look split. Gardens looking great.
I use cardboard between my rows of black raspberries . I add a layer of straw before winter to help protect the crowns from drying out and every spring I add a new layer of cardboard where needed. What weeds i get are alot easier to pull.
Garden is looking lovely and green Rachel. :) I used weedmat for everything except potatoes. For things like beans and carrots i had the weedmat go up to either side of the trench where I wanted to plant so my weed problem was only about ten percent of the colossal job if i didnt use weedmat. Same with tomatoes because i liked to keep the moisture in under the weedmat and have the roots be warm - i always got bumper crops doing that. Mostly it was about where I wanted to spend my time and with a large garden and lots of other property jobs to cope with, i would rather be spending my time 'tweaking' the garden and preserving the harvests. Only 24 hours in a day unfortunately so have to pick and choose jobs. I take my hat off to you for having a farm stand as well!! And it looks awesome but there must be a massive amount of work to create perfect looking jars of goodies for public perusal.....a bit more than if it were just going on your own shelves. The only issue with the onions falling over is they can create a thick mat that can trap moisture than can riot your crop. If you can use some type of staking to stand the tops back up, then I would trim them somewhat to prevent too much moisture from building up on the tops while they finish up.
Im dealing with moles and had a problem with slugs in the cabbage .also everytime i would plant squash seeds somthing takes them 😮. Looks great Rachel thanks for sharing ❤
Sadly I'm not only fighting the nasty Japanese beetles but herbicide drift from the field surrounding my garden!! 9 of my 18 tomato plants are showing damage😢 Your garden is beautiful and this year I'm giving myself grace where weeds are concerned. I had knee surgery a couple weeks ago and I'm not able to keep on top of them like I normally do!
Hey Rachel, garden looks great. Just a suggestion here, I also am newly retired and started a farmstand. I thin the carrots and the customers go wild for the baby carrots.
The only "pest" we're dealing with is the heat LOL! We're dealing with it by covering almost everything with 60% and 90% shade cloth depending on the location in the garden which lowers the temperature by about 20 degrees.
That invasive stuff with the blue flowers- I have that and was once planted as ground cover. Kind of took over and found it way in the back of my yard as well. Wish I could think of the name. Haha

Would you consider doing a short video on material you use between your beds? I've seen you place cardboard and mulch. JUST pros and cons on what works for you guys. Thank you.
Mustard. I swear I live on an old mustard farm 😂 they don’t hold hard so I just try and pick them out and throw them into the grass to be mowed. Some weeds I do lay back down but not always. My first big weeding of the year I put in the wheelbarrow and burnt as it was mostly…. Mustard. 😩 really trying to stay on top of the weeds as I’m checking on flowers and such. Sometimes I think it’s in control then I realize maybe not.
I do the same for weeds. Pull and drop.

Those weeds under the cover look like asiatic dayflowers. They are super invasive. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. I have them in my herb garden and fight them daily.
Oh yeah, the other thing I wanted to mention, instead of using those wooden boards to cover up those cabbage holes, use the big outer cabbage leaves to cover the holes. I use cabbage, broccoli or cauliflower outer leaves to help with weed suppression all the time and it works great, basically the same as ur weeds idea, only unfortunately 😁 no chance of a cabbage growing back from them 🤗👍💪
We’re dealing with horse tail, lady’s thumb, and buttercup. I’m just pulling them mostly and we are putting weed fabric in the vegetable garden.

My onion bed looks the same… we have had so many storms/strong wind come through this summer. First time growing onions too. I’ll see what I end up with at the end I guess🤷♀️ Mine aren’t as big as your onions though.
I cut all my onion tops and freeze dry them , then powder them up with the food processor! My cabbage and cauliflower are doing well, put them under hoops and netting , so no pest pressure! But my broccoli has formed all leaves and stalk but no broccoli ! Already freeze dried almost all of my celery , beautiful bunches ! We are in Mn. And have a short growing season . This year I feel that we are about 3 weeks ahead for the growing season. Lots of rain, but I think things are wacko on the gardening scale ! Some things are not germinating, and I use electric culture , have made lots of cooper coils all over! Your garden looks wonderful.

Japanese beetles.. great trap plant is borage. I collect for my chickens.. i do have traps..
I planted my first cabbage inspired by you. I used a net and they have done great except my sweet dog got scared during a heavy wind and he clawed his way under the netting and broke four cabbages. My cucumbers and squash have been destroyed by squash bugs. It's ironic that I do the same thing each year, but with different resu,ts.
My main pest pressure this year is from Harlequin beetles and just now starting to see squash bugs in zone 7A

Great gardens & organic gardens will have weeds. Great idea with the crab grass, but ours grows long tap roots that stay behind.
get your phone and use google lens to take pic of weed with blue flowers ...if you can identify it maybe can google how to get rid of it too...beautiful cabbages

I've pulled a few onions that have flopped over. It's really hot here and we really need rain.
Here in the panhandle of Texas I’m dealing with pig weed which I think is straight from Satan!! It is so invasive that you can’t get rid of it. I have raised beds and it still gets in and I’m constantly pulling weeds out everyday. Can anyone help??? Thank you Rachel for your garden advice. We all have struggles everywhere!

So my tomatoes last year got taken over by weeds. I began pulling them when I realized, bugs ate the weeds, and didn't touch my tomatoes! The leaves and fruit were perfect. I see the weeds are back thus year!

Your garden looks amazing. I live in northern Indiana my garden is suffering. My tomatoes and peppers are still the same size that i planted a month ago. Not sure what's going on for the second year in a row, will try again next year 😢
My nemesis is Creeping bellflower. I combat it by simply pulling it up while I cry. 😢😂
Bindweed advice would be helpful. It was brought in by some poorly composted bark chips a few years ago and I can not get rid of it. Im aware that the roots are deep and almost impossible to pull up intact.
My zuchinni plants were DECIMATED by squash bugs. I am starting another round of starts. I eat zoodles weekly and wanted to save enough to freezer for a year's worth.
The weed is asiatic dayflower. They are edible but yes a real pain once you have them.
In China it is used as a medicinal herb with febrifugal, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic effects. Additionally, it is also used for treating sore throats and tonsillitis. Recent pharmacological investigations have revealed that the Asiatic dayflower contains at least five active compounds. (not my info just a quick copy/paste).

boards, and stones, in garden borders and around compost
heaps, in wood piles, sheds, outbuildings, garages, and

We have crab grass too. The only place it grows in the garden now is where there is no mulch.
. No dig garden. Potato patch had to be turned because of all the rain last winter. Not mulched and have no weeds.
Haven't seen squash bugs yet.. we have japanese beetles at the moment😢
Rooting the suckers will give you succession plantings of tomatoes if you would like to try it. I cut two this morning just to see if I can make them grow!😉
I have what we call quack grass, which is a rhizome and very invasive! 😮💨 So much work to manage and I learned to never let it b and not manage it because it totally takes over quickly and is so hard to get out! I have a huge yard and use all the grass clippings to suppress weeds and all around the edges of my garden. It is time consuming since I have huge gardens so I wonder if I should just invest in that weed fabric like u have. But like u I just don't care for the look and it's not natural. With that said I do use cardboard in areas where I want a garden space and or clear out a constant weed problem and cover it HEAVILY with cardboard then wood chips then cut holes and plant vining things and hope that in a year I can then make raised rows to grow row crops.

Oh gosh I have grown onions for 40 years I wouldn't worry a bit about leaving those onions for longer than the one u picked, they don't rot that fast at all. Heck I used to wait until they all had fully bent over and died back to harvest and I never have had an issue with rotten onions.
Question, did u cut back ur onion tops this year? I learned that from u and so far in ur garden tours I haven't noticed that u did that. Maybe that is part of ur problem of them getting so top heavy? Just curious.

I’ve had problems where the stem goes all the way to the root and causes rotting after harvesting.
I grew 2 raised beds full of onions, 1 bed looks great the other bed i need to pull but they are so small,not sure what happened there.
Hi Rachel, this is off topic for this video (sorry, but needed to ask during your latests, hoping for a reply). I made off the charts Salsa quite a few years ago, I think (lost my notes). used All spice berries, cinnamon and star anise, I stuck with the quantity called for ingredients. Question, can a deviate with spices?
I've had earwigs in my cabbage SO bad this year. One of them was eaten almost completely through the stem. I don't know what to do to get rid of them.

I find that after I remove tomato suckers, they just grow again. Anyone else have this problem?

Sluggo (spelling is probably wrong, lol) and/or beer. Look them up. I've pretty good results with both.

Seriously though.. what is up with the Japanese beetles?!? They have been so bad the last couple years!?!? They are not eating my green beans but wreaking havoc on my Hollyhocks and Raspberries!!
I think it may have split for being over ripe and should have been harvested sooner.oh that creeping Charley would worry me it really takes over here. I have battled it for over 20 years and it keeps getting worse.
You had a year off, it broke the squash bug cycle. They will eventually find you.
