Honda Passport / Pilot / Ridgeline: More Spring Rate & More Flex!"

  • In this long overdue video, I talk about how I upgraded the rear suspension in my Honda Passport. I'll go over many different solutions that you may find useful.
    Ultimately, Emmanuel from NA Performance in Ventura came up with an idea to take the longer Eibach lift springs and elongate OEM strust/shocks to match the length of the longer springs. The result is more spring rate and longer suspension travel.
    The journey to correct rear suspension sag started with help from Aldo at:
    Central Tire# 5 (by the LAX airport)

    PETITION FOR MORE AFTERMARKET SUPPORT! the reason it took so long for Eibach to make aftermarket springs is because they felt there “WASNT ENOUGH INTEREST” for the product. I know so many of you are struggling with rear suspension sag, pulling trailers and carrying heavy gear. Honda/Acura sells 300,000+ Pilots/Passports/Ridgeline/MDX every year. There’s interest….. drop a comment, Share this video, let’s use the comment section to collect our petition’s to let these companies know that THERE IS “INTEREST”.

      So, just FYI, I’m not trying to call out Eibach, I’m actually really thankful they are the “first” company to offer a spring upgrade for 16+ Pilot, 17+ Ridgeline, 19+ Passport halfway into the year 2022. I get the “there’s not enough interest” from all companies. Bilstein, Ironman 4x4, etc.

      I've seen a couple people recommend Sumos, but when I look at their webpage, it says not compatible with AWD and towing package, which I don't know if I even have. It's been a frustrating experience trying to find a solution for the excessive sag in my 23 BE. I have a 300lb camper and about 300 lbs of camping gear, and haven't even put my bike rack on yet. Emmanuel has the system on his Ridgeline. This is a 35 to 40 degree hill with 3-4 foot ruts. He wasn’t able to climb it unless he used BALLS (brake aid line lock system). I hope I steer you right Killersodas. In a lot of my videos I mention that my Honda Passport is not as off-road capable as a 4WD, and the reason someone would buy a passport is because the on-road aspect is very important to them. I definitely encourage you to go over all your options and keep an open mind. It’s sounds like you’re doing that already, which is a great start. Honda teased the all new 2023 Pilot Trailsport, and there will be alot of notable upgrades. Excited to hear about more details. The Honda 10 speed has a class leading 21.9:1 crawl ratio for single speed transmission vehicles. I’m showing an axle ratio of 4.17:1 in the MDX, and I wonder if they can regear that to let’s say 4.54. If that’s a possibility, we would see 23.8:1, which would be really darn good for an AWD. Won’t hurt to save up a little longer to see what everyone else offers.

      The most aggressive ZF9 has 4.54 gears, producing a 21.5:1 crawl ratio. It’s just too small of an upgrade 😢. Emmanuel has driven up some really impressive stuff though. The extra flex makes those steep rutted climbs less problematic.
      I tried to climb the same hill before the suspension upgrade. Because the steep 45 degree angle the rear stayed fully compressed. I was losing a lot of traction in the middle of the climb and I have no choice but to back down. It was so steep that just letting off the brake I would slide uncontrollably for about 10 feet. With the extra flex, the white Ridgeline climbed with light throttle input.
      Anything steeper would just be too scary for me. I’d want a Jeep rubicon with a front disconnected sway bar and lockers 😂

      If you have a Passport / Pilot you can wait for Eibach’s spring upgrade. I heard it’s in its testing phase. Or you can try installing the Sumo Coil Spring helpers item number CSS-1145. You’ll have to completely remove your tires so that the spring can fully extend, then you have to use a lubricant and muscle them in. They will fit, but it was a PITA.

      I was told you would need the Ridgeline top hat, which also means you’ll need Ridgeline springs. Makes sense, since as seen in the video, the Ridgeline rear shock piston is thicker .

    The strut spacers that your installer used to increase travel (extensions that screw into the top of the strut shaft..?) - are those available somewhere? I do not see those particular pieces as part of the Traxda kit.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  Рік тому +1

      The strut/shock piston extensions are from Emmanuel at NA Performance. So far, I’ve only installed the modification on the rear. At this very moment, we are installing the front. I’ll let you know how it everything went tomorrow. I would consider this all in the testing phase. Emmanuel won’t sell anything unless it’s thoroughly tested.
      So my suspension will be comprised of the following:
      -3.5” Traxda lift kit but we’re going with a 1.5” front spacer and removing the preload spacer.
      -Eibach Prolift kit
      -strut/shock piston extensions from NA performance
      There’s two of us testing this kit, Emmanuel and myself. Results have been great so far.

      VERY interested to know if those will be made available in the future. Are you (or Emmanuel) willing to take pre-orders on the assumption that these will be put up for sale? Or at least a notification list for when it happens?
      I just re-watched this vid and noticed something - @13:09 - are you running TWO sets of Sumo Springs per side? Or am I seeing it wrong?
      Love your channel brother! I originally found you when turning my 2015 FXT into a little overlander. In 2017 I purchased a new Pilot, which I immediately lifted and made that our regular adventure vehicle. So your channel has been an awesome resource for both vehicles!
      Like you I've added a hitch and extra weight to the rear of the Pilot and the saggy butt problem is killing me.. almost went with a no-name set of coilovers, but I really prefer the route you've gone with the Ridgeline/Eibach/Sumo setup. Pretty sure I can fit these springs on the Pilot.. must try..

      Yes, I run two sumo spring helpers on each rear shock. Even with the beefier Eibach spring, I felt I still needed more spring rate, and I appears I was correct.

    Does anyone make an air strut or some sort of overload airbags for these or the Ridgeline?

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring

      I’m not sure. Since overlanding is more about durability, I couldn’t recommend a system like that, especially aftermarket.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  Рік тому

      I’ll be getting the front suspension installed tomorrow 8/24/22. As far as the rear, it requires you to “widen” the hole. It’s a permanent modification, so I wouldn’t exactly consider it a “little mod”. It was a modification I was willing to do because Ridgeline is beefier, and I had a hunch modifications would be available first for the Ridgeline. I’ll let you know tomorrow how it goes with the front suspension.

    The passport already rides like crap, I can't imagine how it rides now. What about the difs that overheat? I feel like cuv's aren't the best candidate for hardcore off-roading. 😅

      Why would you expect a unibody AWD to take on “hardcore off-roading”? I mention it many times in my channel that it’s unreasonable to take on a difficult 4WD trail in a stock 4WD or modified AWD.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  Рік тому +1

      Yes, my current setup has both front and rear Eibach springs. Unfortunately, I think Eibach has discontinued the springs. Not sure if they will be improved and put back on the market.

      @@JonDZ_Adventuring how did the spring feel? Better for off-roading? I found a website that still has them. Thank you for the reply!

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  Рік тому +1

      @@AwdVenture hmmmm, so, I really don’t know if Eibach corrected them, but I can tell you what the original complaints were. So first of all, spring lifts just by themselves are terrible for off-road. It translates to less uptravel and a stiff ride. I’m not sure if it’s this video or my other video, but the front Eibach springs are 0.8” taller and with the strut extenders from new age performance, both spring and strut are taller. This means more travel, more spring rate, and everything handles better than OEM in both onroad / offroad.

    Hi, in adding lift spacers on the rear do you also replace the rear camber with adjustable camber?

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  Рік тому +1

      I personally didn’t, but @no-lo designs has. With spacers, the camber is still within OEM spec. Rear sag from carrying too much weight actually causes negative camber. Now that the rear doesn’t sag anymore, it has a much better stance.
