Hello Douglas: Thank you again for another helpful video. I am new to color management (you may remember I wrote a comment in one of your prior videos that I have moved from Final Cut Pro to DVR), so please forgive my ignorance with color management. However, when you were discussing the choices available in the Color Science drop down (1:20 in your video), you said, “choose ACEScct.” In that drop down box, there was another ACES choice: ACEScc. When would one choose ACEScc instead of ACEScct? In other words, while I appreciate your telling us what to choose, I’d like to know why we choose ACEScct over ACEScc. I always find myself asking, “Why do I choose a particular setting over another?” Once I know WHY I choose a setting, then I understand when to use that choice and when NOT to use that choice. Again, thank you for a great video. I love learning DVR!😊
Yeah you're totally right to ask that question Jay! Basically, Aces CCT was released after Aces CC. They differ in their log encoding curve. The "T" in CCT stands for Toe. And that allows to mimic the feel of grading in other popular Log encodings like Cineon or Arri log C3 etc. That might sound a little overwhelming and technical but basically I know nobody who grades in Aces CC. It's been known for causing some limitations when shaping the contrast of your image. So go straight for CCT ;)
@@thedouglasdutton Haha. Good! I've been trying to get into making show luts and am always confused about the process itself or how crazy your S curve can be if you're using that as your ODT instead of a camera manufacturer transform, etc. So, it would be great to dive in a bit deeper on that and the do's & don''ts of creating show LUTs. (I believe you generally want to keep in simple)
Thanks Douglas, this is very informative. will this setup enable me to have my color graded footage be displayed in the fusion page with the accurate color grade as it's shown in the color and cut pages? By the way you just earned my subscription. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
the HDR wheels always behaves properly in color managed projects. even though you wouldn't select "use color space aware grading tools". this button however affects tools like contrast/pivot, custom curves and qualifiers
Thanks for your input! That's interesting. I usually manage in nodes so I was convinced that option triggered the proper behaviour of the hdr tab in colour managed workflows :)
@@thedouglasdutton it also works with node based color management if the timeline is tagged correctly. that's why you it is set to "use timelin" by default. in a color managed project this is a given
Thank you, Douglas. Great as always. It would be wonderful if you could do a video on setting up Davinci Color Managed setting for Newcomers... Best. 🌿🌹🌿🌹
Everything is great, thank you very much. Which one do you usually use in your workflow and why? DaVinci or ACES? For example, if we use ACES, where should we place plugins like Dehancer? I've never worked with ACES before.
You might have to double check with Dehancer but it could be placed in at the end of your stack. With a colour managed workflow like demontrated in the video, you should chose an input and output of Aces CCT.
Ok, this is going to completely change how I work with color in post. Thanks Douglas! How do you set up working with this color space if you have various cameras in your project that use multiple flavors of LOG? (This might deserve a video unto itself).
Awesome! Glad you liked it! If you've got other cameras. Select the clips in the color page, right clic and tag their input color space appropriately:)
Hello Douglas, what about CST-IN / CST-OUT tecnique ? Si it possibile to use ACES color space and continue to use a combo of two nodes (at start and end of node’s sequence) ? Should I leave Davinci Yrgb at project settings level and then operate situa simmetrical settings pair within the two cst nodes, obviosly using ACES instead of Davinci intermediate ? Which is better and why ? Thanks
Hi David! Yes you can definitely manage using nodes and not use project colour management. To do so you can set your project settings to Davinci YRGB and then use Aces Transforms to achieve the same result.
Hello Douglas: @jaycreighton here again. While the following question is not the point of this particular video, would you please share the particular tablet you use in your color management work? Is it a Wacom tablet, e.g., the Wacom Intuos Pro Tablet? In my quest to learn more about color science and management, I’m researching the usefulness of various peripheral devices, and in what way those devices enhance one’s workflow while in DaVinci Resolve so a video about the peripherals that you have decided are useful to you would be a great assist. Thanks again for a great video, Douglas. Have a peaceful and productive weekend, sir. (Today is Saturday, August 31, 2024. Sometimes it’s hard to know when comments to a video were made. 😊)
Hi Jay! That would be a great video topic idea! Thanks for the suggestion. I'm using a wacom ituos pro M. Really love it and it replaced my mouse years ago. Very useful for doing rotoscoping work.

The saturation in the vectorscope is going out of the circle, how we should use that graph to set the right amount of saturation?
Hi Lorenzo,
Answering your question would require a dedicated video on the topic. Will keep that in mind :)
