No comparison necessary. I’ll take the D-35 all day, every day. I’m fortunate to have a ‘76 D-35 available to me. I love the warmth and brilliance it offers. To my ear that Gibson sounds muted, although that might be attributable to the sound hole pickup blocking some of the sound.
The 76-year-old D35 is wonderful! As you said, the sound of j50 is spoiled by the pickup. Actually, the body vibrates more and makes a good sound. There is no doubt that both are great guitars.
Have a '75 D35 and a '75 J-55, both are pretty amazing guitars, but the edge goes to the D35. The Gibson neck plays better since I've had it the longest.

Gibson for flat picking and Martin for strumming. Both are very nice. Ill take a Yamaha LL53 (1985) over them both. Great video!

I have a 86 D35 my ears like the warmer Martin.
Among Martins, I feel that d35 and d42 have a particularly sweet sound.
