  • Hello! Today we will be playing an easy version of House of the Rising Sun by The Animals on ukulele! Make sure that your ukulele is tuned and let's get started.
For this tutorial you will play the following chords
    C Am F D E E7
    PDF Download
    drive.google.c...
The most difficult chord in this whole song would be E. To play E with more ease, play the chord before it (Am) with your middle finger. Practice sliding your middle finger from the 2nd fret to the 4th fret. Do this for 1 minute every day.
I would like for you to set a goal for when to finish learning this song.
If you commit to play this along with video every day for 14 days, you will master this song.
Play once in the morning and once at night before you go to sleep.
Over time, as you spend time with this song, your fingers will remember where to move and your hand will gain strength to play E chord.

This is really so beautiful on the ukulele and so calming to play and sing. I like that you showed different ways to play it, the very easy and a bit more advanced patterns. That really inspired me to experiment so when I play the song I like mixing them together. It sounds very nice to start with the fingerstyle pattern and then switch to either strumming pattern during the verses. And during the last verse, I do the fingerstyle pattern on the last Am-E-Am again and finish with one downstroke on Am because I think that really finishes the song beautifully.
Thank you so much for such a productive and inspiring lesson! I really see why this is your favourite song on the ukulele.

"I do the fingerstyle pattern on the last Am-E-Am again and finish with one downstroke on Am because I think that really finishes the song beautifully" I could hear this in my head and I agree, that would be a wonderful way to end the song.
Isn't the chord progression so so so cool?

Bernadette, I want to start off thanking you for your amazing tutorials! They are the basis of my learning to play the ukulele! I go through each of them (Let Be, Imagine, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Hey Jude and this tutorial) 6 days a week; polishing my technique and singing skills. I love how you present them at a steady but not rushed pace and lay out the chords and strumming for easy follow along. I know that you cant do anything regarding this tutorial and the song is long compared to some of the tutorials, but I was already to play the whole song through at 5.00 but found you ended it after verse 2 :( I know these tutorials are a lot of work for you on top of teaching school etc. but if you could play the entire song through for the play-a-long, I'm sure many of your subs would really appreciate it! :) If you can't, I understand, I know you've got to have some down time instead of working all the time. I will be a loyal sub as long as you care to keep your channel. Lastly, and you probably don't remember my email, but I'm the guy that wanted your opinion between the Enya and a Cordoba. Well I bought a Cordoba 24T (since the music shop didn't have any Enya's (I like hands on rather than by sight unseen)...and I love it! Thanks for all you do for us "Uke Lovers"!

Bernadette, I was married in Japan in 1968, this was one of my wife favorite songs. She did not understand the words until much later. But I have always liked it. We are living in Hawaii and I have a cousin who's husband retired. They came here to vacation with us. He wanted to make Ukulele's. We introduced him to a school teachers who teach's children how to make Ukulele's. He went back to Salem Oregon and started making them. He is on #18, mine is a tenor and it is #8. A little history; I fell a Formosa Koa and cut a slap out of it and sent it home with him. It is the back of my ukulele, Hawaii was in to sugar cane many years ago with railroads traveling the shore line. Railroad ties where redwood. Later they became fence posts. My top is a fine close grained piece of railroad tie. Sides are black walnut. I have had it a couple of years with nothing happening. Cousin and husband scheduled a vacation here. And I decided to get busy. You and Tyler both do this song. I really like playing. I am 74 and been hard at it most everyday. Been at it about three weeks. I can now play along with you pretty well. E is the biggest problem and your careful direction has really helped. My hands are a lot bigger than yours so sometimes they don't like to cooperate on fitting where I would like them to go. Thanks again for the great instruction.
    Larry

"Fat Fingers" is both a blessing and a curse. For me, I smash two strings with one finger and the third with a second finger. Before that, I barred it from over the top. Novices do strange things, or at least in the beginning when learning without a teacher.

This was one of the 1st songs I learned to play on my guitar, thanks to you, now i can play it on my ukulele. My mother in law bought me a beautiful Luna concerto ukulele 3yrs ago & I never really played it. I finally decided to give it a go. Since my hands are used to shaping for guitar chords, it has made it quite easier to play the ukulele. I learned like 4-5 songs from you in about an hour lol. Thanks! 😉

Hola Bernadette. As a beginner ukulele player, I absolutely love your channel, thank you so much for the time you have spent creating it.
Today has been the first time I have been able to have a full day with my new uke. I have been learning this song with both simple strumming and fingerstyle, practicing scales and continuing to improve my chucking technique. At the moment my up strumming is not so good, I tend to hit the A string and miss all the others, lol. But this is such a fun instrument to play, it makes me want to practice more and improve.
Once again, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us all, I am now going to have a look at your Havana tutorial.
    Take care,
