It's crazy scary how similar you and my girlfriend's experience. She woke up this morning and had a break down about how her boobs hurt. And they hurt for about two weeks every cycle and she's had a miserable time off the pill. If you find anything that helps, please make a video, because we're stuck. Thanks Hannah
ameliorated you're surprised by that? It's totally normal after a while, periods should never be taboo in a couple. Especially when two of you are responsible for them making their appearance every month.
haha my husband knew about my periods before our first date because I have severe endometriosis and it affects me daily so Im very open about it. Its normal to share things when you are in a relationship. I hope your girlfriend can find something to help her x
ameliorated never mind boyfriends, all of my male friends know all about my periods 😂 i have full scale conversations with them about it. its a biological process ...it shouldnt be taboo.
It's nice to have someone who can help younger girls understand things they might not want to speak to their parents about. Love you videos! Also advice for teenagers and women. X
Apollo DA they're more than welcome to watch I'm not saying that they can't but mainly it's helping women and young girls learn about their body and what's happening to them.
So, usually i am not a commenter, but i wanted to share my experience with you: I am 17. At 14 I was perscribed the pill, because at that age I got a boyfriend (with whom I still am in a relationship) and my mum just wanted to be sure. About one year ago I decided for myself that I did not want all these hormones in my pretty young body and so I got off of it. Since then of course my cycle has changed a lot: The cramps, the headache, the acne (freaking hell, my skin is the worst) are (still) going strong, but also my mood is hella more stable and, as far as I can tell, my sex drive is higher - with the last two points I am pretty sure that it's only placebo though. So, now, about 5 month ago, I decided to get the copper coil, as I wanted to avoid any kind of hormones and the NFP-alternatives just didn't seem suitable for my lifestyle and age. (Also me and my boyfriend didn't want to rely on condoms only.) And - as you described in the video - i was so very frightend. I was afraid of blacking out, I was afraid that it wouldn't work properly, I was afraid that my body just wouldn't accomodate to the knowledge of something being in my womb, I was really afraid of pain. Well, to shorten it up a bit: It was absolutely bearable. My doctor spoke with me during the whole operation and distract me thereby. The operation itself is really short and the worst pain lasted a few seconds. It litterally just feels like cramps localized on one specific point - which is of course not really nice, but, you know, you actually know that feeling anyway. That day i got the coil I spent in bed with movies and an hot-water bottle and after a few hours i didn't even feel the pain anymore. After a few days my body had already gotten used to the feeling and since then i haven't consciously noticed it ever again. In conclusio it really was not at all as bad as I had expected and till now i am really happy to have made that decision.
MaybeSunny99 yes to all of this, the copper coil is painful to get, but not for that long, and it just feels odd for a bit until you get used to it, definitely not as bad as I was afraid it would be! Love it
MaybeSunny99 I had the same experience getting my Mirena IUD. Yes, it was painful insertion but my life has completely changed since inserting it. Not having to worry about my period, no pms symptoms, it's heaven. IUD with hormones are localized within your uterus, meaning there are hardly any systemic side effects (unlike the pill which has many side effects for some).
I went off the pill around Christmas and I am so much better: my mood instantly improved, I feel less anxious and more in control, but also I was suffering from chronic gastritis for five years (it started about 6 months after starting the pill 5 years ago) and now I haven't had an attack in six months! Life is so much better now... Also, Hannah: my friend went off her pill and had massive boob pains too, a nurse told her to try evening primrose oil and it helped a lot!
Hannah, I had a similar experience. I was separated from my boyfriend for four months and decided to take the opportunity to go off all forms of hormones (I had been on the pill). Long story short, I didn't realize how much the pill increased my quality of life. Without it I was incredibly moody before my periods, had very bad cramps multiple points during my cycle, had the worst acne I've ever had, and of course very sore boobs. During that time I did find some great resources and techniques to deal with my period issues (exercising in the morning helped with cramping, and period panties are a great invention!!) but I decided to go back on the pill after my 4 month hiatus. I think its hard to decide what to do. Everyone will give you different (usually strongly held) opinions, but ultimately you have to decide what will work best for you. If you are having miserable periods that are only getting worse (which it seems like they are) then you might want to consider your hormone options. Sometimes I feel like people shame others for being on hormonal birth control, or try and scare them with the risks and side effects. There are plenty of risks (though not too bad for a young non-smoker), and a few side effects BUT if it improves your quality of life enough then it is worth it.
Without sounding horrible, I'm kind of glad to hear you say this. After struggling with periods so much it's nice to know I'm not alone in feeling like I need contraception to help control them!
I was on the pill for 12ish years until January 2016. It's only in the last 2 months that my cycle has settled down and figured out what it's doing. The hormonal spikes, random periods, breakouts drove me insane for over a year and things aren't 100% normal but I'm so much happier now and I feel like I have a better relationship with my body. Learning my cycle has forced me to get to know my body better and I feel so grateful for that even if we don't always get on :) stay strong, it'll be worth it in the end!
I'm in the exact opposite situation. I got on the pil for the first time only a few months ago, and I feel so good honestly. My mood is a lot more stable, no more horrible cramps and my skin cleared out. So I'm really glad I decided to go on the pil, because at first, I was very scared of it.
I always thought I was crazy for having weird cramps all throughout the month even when I wasn’t on my period, and also for having very irregular periods. I appreciate how real you are with this series!
Hannah, pleasepleaseplease take a look at the books 'Taking Charge of your Fertility' and 'Period Repair Manual'. How you feel isn't how a woman shouldn't feel without hormonal birth control. I am currently reading the Period Repair Manual book and have already learnt so much and learnt where most probably a lot of my symptoms and problems are coming from, so can't recommend it enough. I truly understand that you must feel frustrated and powerless about what your body is doing, but it isn't the end of what it could/should be doing. Stay strong :)
"Taking Charge of your Fertility" was such a life changer for me!! I'm not Hannah, but thanks for the recommendation! I will check out the other book as well :)
For me too "Woman Code" has been SO helpful and informative. I bought it together with the "Period Repair Manual" and they compliment each other really well.
My situation is a bit different Hannah but the truth is I've never been on the pill and I kind of want to because I think it would help reduce my actual period which lasts about 7 days and reduce cramps but I am terrified of starting it. I am terrified of what will happen to my body and my hormones. I've struggled with acne for a long period of time and I am scared it will somehow affect that and maybe my body weight. I don't know. Being a woman is so damn hard sometimes dang it!
George Pitt the implant has the same effect as the pill in terms of hormones but is more long-term, so definitely better to go for the pill before the implant so if you don't like the change it's possible for it to stop
Eleanor Taylor That's a good point. Obviously I don't have much experience, but just from what I've heard it's a good choice. I was thinking that it's just more convenient, but as you say, best to see if it works for you first with the pill :)
George Pitt nah fam dont worry, was a good suggestion :) the implant is definitely a way more convenient option if youre forgetful, like me, or tend to vomit a lot, also like me - but in regards to the first person's concerns, the pill seems a better starting block
I just (11 days ago) got the copper coil, and I really wouldn't say that it was the most painful experience of my life! Putting it in was more just pretty uncomfortable, no different pain wise to getting and ear piercing! But the cramps after, omg, thought I was dying for a good three days. They've only disappeared in the last two days or so, but I was off painkillers after those first three days, so it wasn't too bad! All in all, I'd rate the actual insertion as not painful, and I think in was just unlucky for the cramps after! Guess I've just got a particularly grumpy uterus 🙄
Ceri it's bearable, just use make the most of painkillers and you'll be ok! It's been a week and a half of (fairly) minor inconvenience, and considering I won't need to take any pills, and can be hormone free for the next 10 years, that is A-OK with me! Not looking forward to the periods though! Haha
Becky Lewis I found my first period the heaviest but it's only heavy for 2 days not constant, and I had heavy periods before so I'm sure it will be fine for you 😊
Lauren Giles oh good, I had heavy periods before and everyone was like "DON'T DO IT" but hormones make me emotional so I'll take slightly heavier periods over that any day!
Hannah just wanted to point out that you can still bleed/ get a period when your pregnant! My mam got them the whole way through her pregnancy when she was pregnant with me! And for anyone else who thinks getting their period makes them safe haha love this series too!!
Alright Hannah, I found you from watching Sav's and Dodie's channels around last year and have been kind of just floating around your channel ever since. But this series GOT ME HOOKED! I come from a conservative, religious household which means we don't talk about womanly functions a ton. It is so nice to hear a woman talk so factually and from personal experience about their period and hormones and all that. I just find that often when I have questions, you've made a video at some point about it. So thank you! For posting such educational videos are more 'taboo' topics in a way that I can easily understand!
Your bladder and womb/hormones are very strongly connected. I get a UTI and severe urinary retention before my period every month. I went on the mirena coil and everything is calmer.
E Braam that's so interesting!! I currently don't get periods thanks to the coil but will keep this in mind in case I decide to get it out. Thank you!!
I came off the pill a few months after you did because I was tired of hormons and what they did to my body...I had lots of moods changes and problems with libido. I was affraid of coming off because before the pill my periods were like...every 6 months or so...but I have been on the pill for 8 years and now I am not my periods are better than ever, 33 or 32 days between periods. I do have more pain than before just before my period comes, but everything has improved!! I am so glad that I left the pill for a while, you inspired me so: thank u Hannah! lots of love for you!
Another frame of mind is to COMPLETELY embrace the cycle, its regularities, irregularities and that everything is a process. Stick with it Hannah! This is we were built as humans, incredibly cyclical and when we started messing with the chemicals, well it might also take a while. My periods started to get better when i just relaxed about it, honestly that is the best you can do. stress = delayed periods. expecting = delayed periods.
This is actually incredibly true. Whenever I'm chilled out my period is like OH HEY, but if I'm sat there tapping my foot thinking where are you bc my app says you should have been due two days ago, it just doesn't come
I love hearing the thoughts you have on birth control, very honest and open. The constant levels of hormones that BC provides are so helpful for the symptoms you experience!! You should be living a full/pain free life. Do what's best for you, after all the series is "The Hormone Diaries" not "No Hormones Ever"
Hannah I've commented this on a few of your videos, but please look into the NuvaRing! Not nearly as big a deal as the coil!! If it doesn't suit, you can just take it out! I use it and it's amaaaaaaazzzing
becky25irish ditto!!! it's legit the best thing ever. I'm in love with it, it's like a case of 'set and forget'.... easiest contraception ever, I swear. acne did make a reappearance when I started though, same for you?
Awww Hannah! Sad to hear you are experiencing such a tough situation with your period! You definitely shouldn't let yourself suffer, so if you want to, let yourself go back onto a form of contraception!
I came off the pill around the same time as you and still haven't had my period, except for some short 'withdrawal bleeding'. I do however have cramps and all the other fun symptoms every once in a while... I'm constantly on the look out for it starting and terrified of pregnancies. The worst part is I can't get back on hormonal birthcontrol until I've had my period, it's driving me crazy!
i feel you! i came off the combined pill and switched to the progesteron only pill bc i didn't want that many hormones in my body and i also wanted to know if the pill was responsible for my mood swings and low-ish sex drive (spoiler: it wasn't) and if my acne would come back off the combined pill (spoiler: oh god it did). i bled for 4 weeks straight so i gave up on that one too. after that i haven't had a period for a year as well, only cramps and constant panic of being surprised by my period and carrying nothing with me. also the fear of becoming pregnant was horrible! i actually went back on the pill without waiting for my period (bc honestly, i'd probably still be waiting to this day). as far as i'm aware it doesn't make a big difference (you just have to take it for at least 7 days before having sex without any other form of protection) but maybe ask your doctor about that to be safe! the only bad thing i've noticed now i'm back on the pill is that i have some water retention + cellulite that i didn't have when i was off it. but i can definitely live with that ^^
Oh my god you're the first one I've heard who actually started without waiting - did your "pill-period" come regularly after that? And did you have any other problems with getting back on it?
Dear Hannah, I came off my pill at the same time as you. It was really strange I'd already made my decision and then you started this series so I've been keeping up to date. My experiences have been really similar to yours but today I took my first pill again. Putting on weight was really affecting my self-esteem and dieting and exercise had no effect at all plus my boobs hurt so much and me period pains were affecting my ability to work - which is why I went on the pill in the first place. I'm a little disappointed that I've gone back on the pill - it would be lovely to live a hormone free life but this way is just better for me and my way of life. Thank you so much for this series it's been really fascinating and like you I feel that I'm more in touch with my body now which I will definitely keep up. Lots of Love, Kat Xx
Hey Hannah! I was on Rigevidon for 8 months and came off around 4/5 months ago. I realised a few things almost immediately. The pill had made me feel as though I was on a permanent PMS rampage with a huge increase in my Anxiety also taking over. This went within a few weeks of stopping. However. Like you, I gained a lot of weight which recently has been messing with my self confidence a huge amount. I also now have very irregular periods and I've even considered going back on the pill just because of this and the constant wondering whether I'm pregnant haha. It's a tough one but this series has definitely made me feel less alone. Love you. Keep being amazing. Xxxx
With your cycle being different than what it's been previously, it sounds like your body is starting to notice you're not on the pill and regulate to "normal" meaning closer to every 24-32 day cycles. I've never been on the pill cause I suck at remembering to take them everyday and I side eye the thought of hormonal contraception and its effect on my body. I love how open and honest you have been with this journey
Oh my god!! Something must be happening in the universe lol. My boobs have been excruciating for over 2 weeks now. The worst ever and my period is late. The joys.
Hi Hannah, I've been on the progesterone only pill for years and have no periods on them. I came off of it around the same time you did as I decided never having a period was a bit strange and I wanted to see what my body was like now without hormones. I went straight back to the pill after two months! I had unbearable period pain and it was just irregular and horrible. I will now never turn away from the pill again! Forget the goals, do what is right for you xx
Have you tried getting a big blood workup done? Also for me, getting a coil wasn't fun, but it definitely wasn't as bad as some of my period cramps, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Dear Hannah, don't be too afraid of the mirena coil!!! I've had two put in over the span of 9 years and it hurt a bit, for one or two days maybe, but never more than heavy menstrual cramps and it was definitely not the most painful thing in my life.
I like that you dangled the possibility of pregnancy in front of your boyfriend, then said "Yeah, whatever, I'll check in a few days when i get home." Is there a companion diary of his reaction and few days immediately thereafter? I feel like that'd be a fun video!
You should take probiotics! Otherwise antibiotics, by changing your whole bacterial balance, can set the perfect environment for other infections later on.
This series has really made me think! I've never considered going off the pill/implant til now. I'm on the implant atm and I'm on my period 24/7, and I've been given the pill also to regulate them. Being off hormones altogether sounds much better than dealing with the stress of two contraceptives and all the side effects xx
The hormones cannot be localised in just a part of your body... You've been told wrong by probably somebody who wanted to take advantage of you having this hormonal IUD, it's literally the same thing as the pill, your liver might be a bit better from having it, instead of the pill, but anything else is exactly the same. Also you need to remember that 7 years is a lot of time of taking synthetic hormones and the body NEEDS at least a part of that time to balance itself, it takes years and honestly taking the pill again would just make that 11 months worthless... Also you could've search for supplements and herbs that help women getting off hormones like Dong quai, Vitex, Ashwagandha and things like that, it is said to make the whole process easier and less painful...
i totally agrre with all of this. The hormons are in your blood cycle and therefore in every part of your body. I have the same hurting boobs you have and for some time i used something called Monk's pepper in german. The latin name is Agnus Castus. I don't know, if you have this in england, but I think it is what war paint called vitex, if my googeling was right. I took the pill in march/april two years after i came off the pill because my doctor adviced it before i had a surgery und those six weeks have been the worst. It felt like those weeks just before my periode, when i'm moody as hell and my boobs hurted like crazy. i was so happy, when i was finally aloud to come off again. Considering your irregular cycles, i would recommend a check up on PCO(S).
Nope it's localised. Due to the medication I'm on, I can't take hormonal birth control so my only option is the Mirena. I'm epileptic and hormonal birth control actually makes the medication I take less effective I.e. Would induce more seizures. I've now had the mirena for roughly a year and a half and I can confirm that the vast majority of the hormones are localised
Elizabeth O'Neill what about progesterone only pills like cerazette: doctors often prescribe those to patients with epilepsy...mirena has a type of progesterone in it too. (and no estrogen like the combined pills which are contraindicated in epilepsy)
Still... I won't agree with that... think of it the hormonal system is as the name says - a system in your whole body, you cannot just have hormones located in your uterus or elsewhere... it's just biologically impossible. Yes, some say that the hormonal IUDs have less hormones etc and maybe that plus they are not in your digestive system and so they don't make it difficult for your body to absorb the other medication, but they are synthetic hormones and so they affect your hormonal system in a way. Maybe not that you suffer from it as much as before, but hormonal contraception is not a safe or healthy option, ever. And there are studies to it... depression, anxiety, blood clots, cervical and breast cancer, the list goes on...
I think it's down to the brand of pills I'm on. Some pills break down effectiveness of birth control and some break down effectiveness of the epilepsy drugs themselves. All I know was I was advised by both neurologist and the doctor who fitted the Mirena that it was the only safe way to go. I love it anyways so I'm happy with it 😊
I also have Uc and have hormonal problems in the form of pcos. That shows itself with long menstrual cycles, acne and cysts on my ovaries. My obgyn said that its quite common that women that have Uc have problems with pcos and other problems down there. I have been hormone free the last 10 years or so and just a month ago I started taking the birth-controll pill Zelle. And I feel so much better!! The pain I had so often in my ovaries are completly gone! if you havnt checked with your obgyn if you have pcos or endometriousos I really recomend you to. Love that you talk about Uc, we need to lift the shame from it and show ourself!
I just recently had a mirena inserted! You will not regret it! My periods were awful. Long and painful ever since I started so thought that was normal. Getting it put in WAS super painful. For about 7 minutes. Now I will never go back! I love what it's done for my periods (about 2 days) and I love not having to think about a pill 😊 love you Hannah. Good luck.
I honestly find it quite funny to hear you complaining that your body does not work like a clock. Of course it doesn't, it has been regulated by artificial hormones and needs time to stabilize and learn to take care of itself. I have struggled with irregular periods and hormone imbalance since mid teens (I'm 23 now), at 16 went through about 8 months of no period, possibly due to depression. For the last few years I have finally been quite regular thanks to a healthy lifestyle and some natural supplements. Although I still get mood swings, cramps and fatigue every month, I am greatful to my body for being healthy and doing without any drugs and hoping it will be able to produce a healthy baby someday in the future. P.S. I`m using condoms for protection and my boyfriend of 2 years is all for it, as he understands what a bitch messing with hormones could be for me.
I had the copper coil put in a month or so ago. Having it put in was painful but it lasted for such a short time (it only took about three mins) and now I have contraception without hormones for 10 years. I even then went to an English lesson straight afterwards, in my experience it wasn't anything as bad as people told me it would be. It was so worth those few moments of pain to be off the hormones but not having to worry about contraception. Personally, I couldn't recommend it more! Love this series Hannah
I mean I don't have a womb, nor am I a medical professional, nor have I had any experience of a friend coming off the pill, but ... sounds to me like you should go back on the pill.
Andy Hartley A lot of females want to come off the pill because of all the hormones (progesterone or estrogen etc) which basically trick your body into thinking its pregnant; later on in life it can cause fertility problems because it messes up your menstrual cycle so much that your body cannot revert really. There is lots of information on the internet if you want to learn more :)
Yep, obviously there is more to consider and I'm sure Hannah would consult her doctor before going back on the pill - and doesn't need me to tell her that. My point was if, Hannah, you are at breaking point, and you and your body were much happier on the pill before, and crucially the only thing stopping you is wanting to go for at least 12 months off the pill, then firstly don't worry about it being 12 months (or 11 or 13) and secondly do what is best for yourself. It's clearly a very personal decision; one that can only be made in your own time.
It takes more than a year for your body to get over taking the pill for years. What Hannah is experiencing sucks but it's quite normal. Also, a lot of doctors are biased when it comes to the pill. They want women to take it because it's effective and frankly also because of pressure from big pharmaceutical groups. You can look into it, there's a lot of info on the Internet. The pill is not meant to be taken for years, it affects a woman's body drastically, that's why Hannah is struggling. Coming back on the pill now would ruin an entire year of efforts :/ (Also she came off the pill in the first place for a reason, so she is going to experience the same negative side effects once back on the pill)
Andy Hartley It is really good to see anyway that more men are involving themselves about female issues and they are actually trying to help!! So thank you for that
I recently stopped taking the pill after 6 years of the same one and opted for the copper IUD. Even though it's different from Mirena in size and function, I would agree that the insertion was one of the most painful things I've ever felt, but it only lasted a minute and it's sort of my bad for getting it done the same day as my consult, so I wasn't prepped with medicine or numbing. I know a lot of women who thought it was a breeze though! And even though it hasn't been in super long, I'm SO happy with my choice and didn't even spot or cramp past the 4th day!
I am totally a' better on the pill' person, my period was just stopping me from living my life before I went on the pill. Tbh your jounrey scared me at te begining... it made me think, will I feel the need to come off the pill when older? but I re-evaluated why I'm making that daily choice, and I still am a pill person, and I'm confident about it :) Do what feels good to you and your body and don't let the 12 months thing stops you if you really want to :) Thank you for this forever really interesting series xx
Have a coil for almost a year now, and it's a blessing! I had a really heavy flow and the pain was unbearable but now it's almost completely gone. Yeah, the procedure made me almost faint, but after a few days and good pain meds, you're good for another 5 years, so definitely worth it
I've had my period for just over a year and lord give me strength! It started out cramping then boob pain then back pain and let me tell you you have not expirienced pain until you get your back pain and boob pain on the same day
I came off the pill about two months ago after being on a few over the last 5 years. I got the copper coil immediately (no hormones), and although it was absolutely excruciatingly AWFUL (as no babies or smears yet) and my most recent 'real' period was the most painful I've ever had, I would take that any day over the hormonal side effects of the pill. My coil is good for 5 years and am looking forward to my new stress free and low maintenance contraceptive! I would definitely recommend giving it a go!! Love the series!
I have never been on the pill. I feel sorry for Hannah. I hope everything works for her. My cycle only lasts for 5 days! I can't imagine over 2 weeks oml! I feel so bad for her! She needs a hug!
I could never go off the pill.. I love not having any periods or pain. It's allowed me to do so many things and enjoy life completely. I wouldn't even dare to go a day without it, I'd get so sick. You're a brave one!
i started the pill about the time you came off (a few months before actually) and i've been feeling worlds better than i had prior. especially these past months i've felt amazing. i have endometriosis, and honestly this has helped so so much. i obviously still have worse than average cramps, but wow are they better than before. it's been such a help and i'm so happy i decided to start.
Dear Hannah. I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you've been having with coming off the pill, having your body throw you for a lope hormonally is never a good time. I've personally never been on the pill because I suffer from anxiety, and was unwilling to take any chances as to how the extra hormones would affect my body. However I do have a cooper coil or cooper IUD to some people. I can honesty say it's the best choice I could have made for myself, there was little to no pain for me, just mild discomfort, and that is coming from someone who hasn't had children. it has taken my body a couple of months to adjust to it, but all in all I would advice anyone seeking birth control to keep the coil/IUD in mind.
I'm on the pill Yaz for the past 6 years and my periods are 3 days, very light and I don't get any cramps or anything but I still hate periods. I had come off it just once when I had elective surgery for 2 months, and surprisingly did not have any side effects. it was like I never took it in the first place, and when back on it I still never had any side effects
I got the Mirena IUD, and I was told to expect just bad menstrual-like cramps for a day or 2, and that is exactly what I got. Totally bearable. My period was exactly like yours: about 60 days long, awful cramps, 2 weeks of painful boobs. It was completely worth it, especially now that all of those pms symptoms are gone and I no longer bleed. Pain varies from person to person, and my doctor told me that the menstrual-like cramps are the average amount of pain people feel.
Love the hormone diaries and you! I came off the pill 4 months ago becauce it was starting to cause problems mentally and for my libido. Not good! I was on the pill for over 10 years but coming off it works so well for me. I feel better mentally and my sex drive is back plus i lost weight. Most important is i feel so relax not stressed or overly sensitive. Only downside is can't control my period anymore. And have to use other protection. The coil scared me.
as someone who had a kidney infection during exam week, I feel your pain. good luck with recovering, feeling as if you have to pee all the time really upsets the whole flow of daily life.
Hannah, I had the Mirena coil put in about 6 months ago and would not look back. The actual process of it being put in is more uncomfortable than painful, the most painful part for me was the cramps afterwards but after a day of rest I was back to my usual self. I would recommend taking a friend or your partner with you though, for moral support but also because I needed a little help getting back home as I felt a little faint. It's not the most pleasant of experiences but it's definitely worth it for a long term contraception plus no periods to deal with! I had very irregular periods for the first 4 months but nothing recently so hoping that means they've stopped now, but most people say theirs stopped straight away. The fact the contraception lasts for 5 years is great for me who is in a long term monogamous relationship but also a students so not wanting any surprises soon. Plus with the Mirena there's no long term effects to your fertility. My partner is graduating from medicine and we sat down together when we first started going out and decided what the best contraception would be for us and he spoke very highly of the coil and I was fed up of being on the combined pill as I knew it was effecting my mood a lot. Since I've had the coil put in, I still have up and down days but my mental health is much better than it's been at any other time. I would highly recommend the coil but I also understand it depends on everyone's circumstances and what their long term plans are
So I came off the pill in November and by the time February rolled around I was so sick of it. I had so much acne off the pill and I just never knew that would happen. I started taking it at age 14 and stopped last year when I was 22, so I guess pill protected my skin throughout my teenage years. I finally started back last week and I am so GRATEFUL.
I've never had children, I had the coil fitted in March and I made it into a much bigger deal than it needed to be! It was SO painful for about a minute and after that I had the worst cramps for about a week but now everything's settled down and I wouldn't look back! Best thing I ever did!
I am definitely feeling much better emotionally... the only thing that became really annoying is me having acne at the age of 21 (when I was a teenager I barely had spots) and I can also experience something new which is my ovulation! My period has moved a little as well. But otherwise I wouldn't go back on the pill! there are so many other ways how to protect yourself without fucking up your entire system. Great video, Hannah
hey hannah! i'm a PA in family medicine. another option is the skyla. it's smaller and i recommend it for patients who have not had children yet. I also recommend taking some ibuprofen prior to the procedure to minimize pain. getting it placed in during your menstruation also allows for easier insertion as your cervix is wider open. I too am deciding whether or not to get the IUD and even working in the medical field, i am nervous ha! so totally normal. there are pro's and cons of both the mirena and skyla but the idea is the same with one being smaller so thought i would throw that in the mix for you. Feel free to message me if you have any questions as well! best of luck!
Don't give up, Hannah! Your body will take time to get adjusted to what's going on and should hopefully even out. Keep persevering and it'll all be worth it 😊
When I came off the pill, I felt amazing. It was quite a few years ago, but the emotional difference was awesome. Don't worry about reaching one year, because relieving your discomfort is worth it. And when you talk about coming off the pill later, you'll probably round up to a year anyways!
I came off hormones for six months and it was great. I figured out that the anxiety and depression I'd had for years had largely been because of being on hormones. Now I'm on the mini pill again and it's all come back. I'm going to the doctor to possibly get off it tomorrow.
I came off the pill just before you and decided to get the coil... it was painful when it was inserted but it was very quick and I am SO happy that I got it! Periods are lighter and cramps less strong. It's been 3 months and I'm very happy and would recommend it. That's just me though! Love your hormone diaries Hannah!! Xxx
First things first - everyone's body reacts differently to birth control. The Mirena was not bad to get in - but wrecked havoc on my body. Before Mirena, normal birth control was fine, I was active and could maintain/lose weight easily. Moods were stable and acne was very rare. I tried the Mirena and REGRET IT. I had horrible anxiety, weight gain, mood swings, cystic acne. It was awful. I truly believe it triggered PCOS in my body which I am still battling. In November I went off of HBC completely and read Taking Charge of Your Fertility, started FAM and joined about a bazillion FAM facebook groups. Its not very everyone and its not perfect. You have period and PMS and just as with any other form of HBC - there is a risk of pregnancy - but life off of HBC is without a doubt better than life with. My anxiety on HBC was through the roof - now its only during my luteal phase and there are plenty of natural supplements that you can take for that. Same with breast pain. I'd suggest giving FAM more of a chance so you can learn about your body, why your cycles are irregular and start fixing it. Periods don't have to suck!
Getting the Mirena was the SINGLE BEST DECISION I EVER MADE. (yes, that absolutely required all caps). I'm on my 2nd now. It wasn't comfortable going in, or coming out, but it wasn't that bad (second was better, and I've had a kid too). My unsolicited advice: ask if you can feel the wires before your doctor inserts the coil. You'll have to check them every so often, and it's handy to know exactly what they feel like.
Came off the pill years ago, around a year and a half after that I became vegan, that was the best thing I did for my period, does not hurt at all and I am REGULAR which I had never been before, I think what you're experiencing might be because your hormones are still "confused", don't go back on the pill! Just let your body regulate, and MOST IMPORTANT THING: ditch dairy or consume as little as possible because THAT has hormones itself (since it's cow's breastmilk) it really does make a difference, I don't want to be a preachy vegan, but really is one of the best things you can do, less period pain, less spots, try it for a few months, I hope my advice helps! Of course everybody is different but since I don't mind my period at all, because it doesn't bother me, I want to share what works for me. I really enjoy the hormone diaries, lovee xx.
Hi Hannah! I came off the mini pill in October 2016 because I literally had pain down below for so long, I was depressed, angry and had pretty high anxiety levels oh and NO sex drive... Great! Since coming off I feel AMAZING. I feel happier, have more energy, sex drive is back and Im so pleased with my decision. I now have a copper IUD and have had it since mid May and again - so far, love it (*touches wood like a crazy person*). My periods are honestly not much different, no real change in pain other than maybe having cramps for a half day longer (these are totally managable with ibuprofen). I feel like I have my life back again!! The insertion process, I'll be honest wasn't the best time of my life BUT having said that, it was only a matter of minutes and tbh I would have it done again! Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us, you have helped so much with my own process and I'm excited to keep following yours!
Looking back through the comments, I think I am alone in saying... just go back on the pill! Your audience loves you and we don't want to see you suffer so that you can draw a series to a close after a year! You tried it, you found that what works best for you is the pill you were on and so you would now be making a more informed choice to take that pill. I would applaud this choice and would still think this was a great series 🙂 xx
Keep fighting Hanna!! I have never been on the pill, but I experienced not having my period for a few years (due to health issues) and yes, menstruations can be extremely painful and uber annoying, but I have finally understood that we should all accept how our body works and the little miracle that happens in our uterus every month or so! As nayyirah waheed said, 'I bleed every month. But do not die. How am I not magic?' Lots of love 😘😘
My cycle is as long as yours! I totally understand you haha some doctors had said to me "oh, it's ok, your cycle is just lazy..." . Sorry for my English, it's not my first language, but I want to share with you that I also quit hormones about a year ago, maybe it's a common thing to have a long cycle after that. The first time I quit hormones I got desperate and decided to take them again, it was more comfortable! but now I have been patient enough. I think my body it's starting (yes, finally!) to get that it has do all the work by its own. It has been a rollercoaster!!
I get all of the things that you listed at times and am not on hormone birth controls of any kind currently but was about 7 years ago. Early period, too much boob pain, mid cycle cramps. It doesn't happen all of the time, just like twice a year occasionally. Also so sorry to hear you have cystitis. It really sucks.
I've been on the pill for around two years now, and it has honestly made my periods so much more manageable. I used to suffer with really bad cramps which would stop me be able to work/study/do anything at all. I also had a very heavy flow which was uncomfortable and not to mention super wasteful when it came to tampons. Since being on the pill my periods are now 2 days shorter, much lighter (so I easily switched to a menstrual cup which works well for me) and I get barely any pain at all apart from a light cramping which signals that it is about to start. I can't imagine going back to my life before. I've heard people saying that taking hormones can be bad for you but considering the improvement it's made to my life it is worth it from my perspective.
I have been experiencing my own hellish like period torture since I stopped taking antidepressants this year. It's not something I was ever told about as a possibility & it's been very frustrating (to put it lightly). Do what you think is best for you & what puts you most at ease. I will also say that your body might take longer than you expect to adjust off birth control. It doesn't make it easier to know that while you're experiencing pain - but it can help to think that this likely won't be forever & your cycle will probably continue to change. & maybe there is something you could take to target the breast pain? People with uteruses deserve better healthcare & research.
I've been off the pill for a little over 3 years now and for me personally it's been the best decision ever! My cycles have been getting more regular after about 1.5 years. The only bad thing about is that my periods are way heavier and more painful than when I was on the pill. But both my mood and sex drive are so so so much better and that, for me, outweighs everything.
I came off in February after being on the pill for just two years, so the shock of getting my period back wasn't as bad as a lot of people I've seen that have been on a lot longer. The main difference I noticed was 1) I started to lose some of the weight I had put on since going on the pill and 2) I was able to experience spikes in my mood/energy that I hadn't noticed I wasn't experiencing while on the pill. Before I web off the pill I had been exercising every morning for at least 30 min for the last five months and I hadn't noticed any difference in my mood/energy level. The first week after coming off I did a fairly light workout compared to some of the workouts I had been doing lately and felt this incredible burst of energy. I had forgotten that that was what I loved about exercise. It was so encouraging. In the months since I've definitely had some hormone-related mood swings, but they aren't worse than before I went on and they're much more manageable since I've had counseling to help me manage my anxiety since then. So far, it's going well and I like the way I feel.
I've never been on the pill but my cycle is kinda similar to yours when it's normal for month then longer. I really hope that you stick to it Hannah. (At least for a year) You've inspired me to be in tune with my hormones and period rather being apathetic.
The pill really helps me, I'm coming up to a year on the pill in July and I love that I can plan my life three months in advance. For example, I'm on microgynon and my three months on the pill in a row lined up perfectly which means that I don't have to have a period throughout august! That's great cause it's my summer holiday 😊
The coil is the best thing that has happened to me. I had a lot of the symptoms you're describing and rarely experience them now. I would highly recommend it. It is uncomfortable going in and you get cramps after but in my opinion its worth it. I wish I had got it sooner than I did. 10mins of pain for 5 years of freedom.
I went off the pill a few years back and the breast tenderness issue was prevalent for me too. Somewhere in year two it dropped to about a week of tenderness and my cycle was a fairly consistent length. I went back on the pill about 4 months ago. I have not experienced breast tenderness since. My cramps have drastically reduced and I quite enjoy knowing percisely when my period is gonna start. Before I went back onto the pill I explored other non hormonal options. Many of my options were limited due to a LEEP procedure and the way my cervix healed. I'm happy and healthy and enjoying the pill again.
Hi so I got the Mirena IUD inserted in January and I love it! It hurt, but not as much as everyone psyched me up to believe. It felt like one giant cramp and then some smaller cramps that would come and go as my body got adjusted to it. It was worth it for me because my periods were miserable and now I don't get any at all!! One thing to be aware of is you will probably spot for a couple months and experience some discomfort but once your body gets used to it it's great!!
Ladies. I salute you all.
Thank you😂😂
Thanks.. its so hard to hve period every months
Ryan Downey wow you and your gf discuss periods?
ameliorated you're surprised by that? It's totally normal after a while, periods should never be taboo in a couple. Especially when two of you are responsible for them making their appearance every month.
ameliorated why do you seem surprised? loads of partners (in particular long term partners) are open about things like this.
haha my husband knew about my periods before our first date because I have severe endometriosis and it affects me daily so Im very open about it. Its normal to share things when you are in a relationship. I hope your girlfriend can find something to help her x
ameliorated never mind boyfriends, all of my male friends know all about my periods 😂 i have full scale conversations with them about it. its a biological process ...it shouldnt be taboo.
I remember watching the first episode of the hormone diaries... You've come so far Hannah! ;) xx
Oh hi about a movie! Love your videos!
Hannah, you need to re-watch your first episode to remind yourself why you did that to yourself.
IT'S SO CLOSE. A YEAR. YOU CAN DO IT HANNAH.
Don't we all hate periods?
I don't know, I think they're pretty fantastic to get when you're in pregnancy scare mode. Be like *sees blood* NO BABIES! YASSSS!!!!
You can still have a period when you're pregnant, though :D It's rare, but possible.
RedhairedBallerina what? The endometrium is kinda busy when you are pregnant you know, how is that possible??
it is possible, if you google it you'll find cases of it, it is quite rare but could happen
Asterisk, NORMALLY means no babies.
So, usually i am not a commenter, but i wanted to share my experience with you:
I am 17.
Jennifer Berard My body did not respond well to the Mirena coil. I would not recommend it if you have prior experiences with androgenic side effects.
Hannah,
I had a similar experience.
I can totally relate to you Hannah😤 I love these videos because you're so open and honest, its nice to know others go through the same thing!
OhNoWell Yes!! TCoyF is an awesome book!
ooooh yes. maybe the banging book club could read them?
Oh no well "Woman Code" is another really informative book on regulating menstrual cycles naturally!
For me too "Woman Code" has been SO helpful and informative. I bought it together with the "Period Repair Manual" and they compliment each other really well.
"now I'm even more clueless" - sponsored by clue?
My situation is a bit different Hannah but the truth is I've never been on the pill and I kind of want to because I think it would help reduce my actual period which lasts about 7 days and reduce cramps but I am terrified of starting it. I am terrified of what will happen to my body and my hormones. I've struggled with acne for a long period of time and I am scared it will somehow affect that and maybe my body weight. I don't know. Being a woman is so damn hard sometimes dang it!
My acne got waaay better thanks to the pill!
Marta Marques
You could try the implant?
I actually finally got on the pill this past year, after watching the hormone diaries. I love it so much. I'm finally in control of my own body.
Becky Lewis I'm supposed to be getting the copper coil this week and I'm really nervous about the pain and cramps! :(
Becky Lewis I would definitely say the cramps after were worse than the procedure too (had my copper coil in for 3 months now) I'm loving no hormones
A new video? But it's a Monday. I was totally unprepared for this.
Hannah Witton yay!
I went on the mirena coil and everything is calmer.
oliverlaurasykes every month??? omg poor you o.o
oliverlaurasykes I've got a friend for who the menstrual cup also did wonders. Still prone to UTI but way less!
"Not pregnant... and not getting views" Oh Hannah, I love you :')
Xxxx
"Although it'd be great for views" XDDD
With your cycle being different than what it's been previously, it sounds like your body is starting to notice you're not on the pill and regulate to "normal" meaning closer to every 24-32 day cycles. I've never been on the pill cause I suck at remembering to take them everyday and I side eye the thought of hormonal contraception and its effect on my body. I love how open and honest you have been with this journey
Oh my god!! Something must be happening in the universe lol. My boobs have been excruciating for over 2 weeks now. The worst ever and my period is late. The joys.
Hi Hannah,
I've been on the progesterone only pill for years and have no periods on them.
Same for me. Either we have horrible periods or great insertion experiences XD
Dear Hannah, don't be too afraid of the mirena coil!!! I've had two put in over the span of 9 years and it hurt a bit, for one or two days maybe, but never more than heavy menstrual cramps and it was definitely not the most painful thing in my life.
Hey Hannah! Could you please make an episode about how getting off the pill affected your sex drive.
Really enjoying the series so far. Thanks a lot!
Michelle Davies Yes! One of my biggest reasons for getting off the pill is because of low libido so I would love a video on this!
I love this series! It's just so nice to have validation that having a period absolutely sucks. I always get excited when I see a new EP posted
Damn I'm early! 😊 also yes, screw that damn coil 😐😐
The cystitis story hit me in my urinary tract
I think your body is adjusting but ah i hope it happens quicker for you!
you should try maca powder! it helps balance hormones naturally :)

Sure feels good being a dude about now...
Andy Hartley it can also increase mental health issues...which is shit. and can worsen migraines.
And even though it hasn't been in super long, I'm SO happy with my choice and didn't even spot or cramp past the 4th day!
a life without periods? babe its called being a man xo
I am totally a' better on the pill' person, my period was just stopping me from living my life before I went on the pill. Tbh your jounrey scared me at te begining... it made me think, will I feel the need to come off the pill when older? but I re-evaluated why I'm making that daily choice, and I still am a pill person, and I'm confident about it :)
Do what feels good to you and your body and don't let the 12 months thing stops you if you really want to :)
Thank you for this forever really interesting series
xx
Keep going Hannah!!! You can do it!!! I can't believe that this series started nearly a year ago, it's insane
The lightning in this video is amazing!
I used to get horrid mid cycle cramping. felt just like normal cramps, too! hope everything is better in your future cycles!
Hannah! Getting my copper IUD was a total breeze, insertion wasn't painful at all and I'm LOVING not being on hormones!
Watching these videos always makes me think about women way back who had no options with managing their periods. Ugh, they were tough.
When you mentioned ovulation cramps I was like !!! because I have them every cycle and never before have I heard anyone mention it. Thank you!
