  • Tom Schrunk joins me to demonstrate his amazing technique on how to flatten wood veneer using hot aluminum plates. After seeing this method in action I am convinced that it is one of the best ways to flatten and prepare veneer.
Please leave some comments and let me know what you think about this!

02:40 Tom explains how using heat and moisture softens both the cellulose and the lignin in veneer
03:35 Tom explains what kind of aluminum he uses, how he cuts it, and what size plates he uses for this veneer flattening technique.

07:56 I place veneer onto the hot plates just before pressing them together.
08:26 This is the part you MUST SEE. The warm veneer goes CRAZY when I mist it with water!
09:55 Removing nice flat veneer from the plates after they cool down.
I had some nice crotch walnut veneer that I wanted to use, but it was so warped and wrinkly that I couldn't use it. I have had good luck flattening veneer with a household iron in the past, but it would not work on these particular sheets of wood veneer.
I thought about using super soft veneer softener, but it was winter time and the bottle says to use it in a well ventilated area. Also, even though the veneer softener works pretty well, it is kind of messy.
I am very fortunate to know Tom Schrunk and to live in the same area as he does. Tom had told me about a technique he has for flattening veneer using hot aluminum plates, but I had never actually seen it. I gave him a call and he graciously offered to come over and help me out.
If you have ever taken any of Tom's classes at Marc Adams School of Woodworking then you know what a nice person he really is.
Tom not only loaned me the aluminum plates, but he came over to my house and walked me through the whole procedure.
It is a good idea to mist the veneer with plain water when you place it onto the hot plates. This was on of the most fun parts because when I misted the warm veneer with water it really came alive! You can see what I mean by clicking here: 08:26
The final result was that each and every sheet of veneer came out perfectly flat. I am really sold on this method for flattening veneer and I will definitely use it again!
