    I tried this many years ago at a neighbors front yard with permission. That was a big costly mistake for me and him. The ant hill was directly over the electrical pipe going to his home and his PVC water line. I learned the hard way where not to do it. It burned through both. The electrical company thought it was cool but they had to cut out a section of pipe and wires as it damaged them. They asked if they could keep it. The neighbor said if you don’t bill him for the repair. The only repair bill was for the plumber to fix his water line. Lesson learned now I watch awesome people like you do it. Watching this makes me want to try again somewhere in a remote location not near any underground utilities.

    • @StuffandThings_
      @StuffandThings_ 3 роки тому +52

      There are ways to avoid utility lines, usually by calling up utility companies or looking for marks. This, plus finding a nice area of the yard away from your house and the street could save you quite the headache. Hopefully the fire ants cooperate with their nest location.

    A couple of things I have learned about backyard casting: When you have poured out your crucible, drop a round of cardboard in the furnace, and put your crucible Back In on top of it. Your crucible will not crack from Cooling too rapidly, and the cardboard keeps it from sticking to the Furnace bottom. Let the furnace naturally Cool, this will save your crucible. Wear a welders leather apron, and steel covers for the top of your shoes. This could save you a crippling accident someday. When you pour, stand on a higher surface than the molds are on, that way you won't inadvertantly have to step in molten metal should an accident occur. When I pour, I drop my crucible into an elevated Pouring Shank, Basically a steel ring with a shank on it, straddled between 2 cinder blocks, I keep my foot on the center of the shank during the transfer with the pouring shank supported with the cinder block close up, this gives the most support for the 'Live Crucible.'.I skim there and proceed to pour. These tips have saved my Life on more than one occasion, and Hopefully you will learn from them too. Remember to pour when the metal is hot, clean and clear, practice these steps and enjoy your Creativity.

    I live in South Texas. I have also done quite a few Fire Ant colony castings. A few years back we had a pretty good drought here in Texas so the Fire Ants were not getting flooded out as they usually do so the nests were huge! I have played around with different metals, and last year I cast my most intricate one yet out of Copper. I have done a few in brass, and I was able to do a small one in Silver. The great thing about metal casting is that the material is never wasted. I can simply re melt it all down again if i needed or wanted to. I would LOVE to do a small one in solid Gold. I think i could get away with 1/2 Kg of Gold, and just re melt it in the future.

    Just Awesome! I'm a 3D sculptor, have you ever thought of placing two (1,2,3) eye bolts ( or revolving pin ) in the base of the still hot aluminum, and then when everything is cooled and finished you would cantilever/ hang it right-side up ( ie bottom side down ) as a floating sculpture? Just a thought😊

      When I was less than five years old, I sat down on the grass and within minutes they were crawling up my arms and legs. I couldn’t swat them off fast enough by myself. I was shrieking for what seemed like a long time, before my oldest brother came running, yelling to my parents that I was being attacked by fire ants. Soon enough my entire family was brushing those damn things off of me. It was a terrifying thing to experience when you don’t know what’s going on.
      Many, many years later, one of my own toddler sons and I sat down on the grass in Alabama, and the second he let out a peep, I knew EXACTLY what was going on! Those fire ants are some fast little buggers.

    I worked in a foundry casting trophies out of lead. I had a bad casting resting on the edge of the pot drying out when it got knocked into the molten lead. This was an 800*F pot of lead. I never moved backwards so fast in all my life as I watched about 15 pounds of Liquid Lead go shootin' up in the air. EEEEHAAAA! It was a fun job.

    Yikes; I knew about pre-heating the molds (I watch BigstackD), but I'd no idea that not pre-heating your metal could cause that kind of trouble! ..And come to think of it, I bet using the hose to pressure-wash the casting out is better for the soil; it replenishes the water the molten metal evaporated out. Cool~
