    Atari, if it wants to distinguish itself as it had done in the past, industrial design should be a leading principle. Honestly? This handheld by Atari, if it’s that red and black one looks like a cheap Chinese product with an Atari logo on it. Make something super thin with ultra low power components, a built in thin rechargeable battery, a high quality screen and games to boot. In my view Atari should be wowing us.

      It has the same design as the other Super Pockets, as it's part of a range, and having used one they are A LOT better built than those Chinese knock off handhelds. But as I said in the video, I still want to see one that follows the Lynx design aesthetics to genuinely stand apart.

      @@TheLairdsLair 24:26 I hope the Lynx branding as in that handheld show at the timestamp is a lot smaller, like a beautiful little jewel. I hope Atari consults with a reputable industrial design company who is willing to consider something very special and deserving of such an iconic brand. I suspect that in spirit this is Atari’s goal but money may be a deciding factor. It’s nice to reminisce the Atari brand and the possibilities.

      I made that very quickly in MS Paint lol, it's not remotely official. All I did was stick a logo on the existing handheld.

      No, the Evercade range is completely different, they use real cartridges for a start!

    Thank you for having the bravery/courage for saying that the NES Double Dragon was rubbish 🎉 cuz I've been hearing stupid crud from people, literally since 1989, how much the NES Double Dragon was a complete smash hit. I've always been an arcade dude and I know that , even the SMS Double Dragon was a superior product. And good luck with the healing mouth bud , were here in your corner partner, PS cool new Lynx too

    Not really a fan of this but more due to being Evercade as they are clearly designed to collect rather than play with all the different variants out there and how some cartridges immediately fall into the "Collector" market which inflates there prices on the second hand market.
    If people are having fun that's great but the money sink for all the Evercade products is pretty high.

    This reminds me. While Atari is out-and-about, buying retro IPs, they should def pick up _Space Invaders_ (and _Omega Race,_ but a dif story... ), which is still more connected to Atari (1980) than Taito (1978), despite not being the pack-in game for the system. Arguably, though, it was played for more total hours on the 2600 VCS than any other platform, and it would make a great addition to Atari’s recent “Recharged” series - _this time with an option to have shields!_ 🍻

    • @TheLairdsLair
      @TheLairdsLair  Місяць тому

      Can't see Square Enix letting Space Invaders go, but I do see an opportunity for Atari to buy all the Bally/Midway/Williams/Sente/Tradewest/Leland/Atari Games I.P. from Warner Bros, because they don't seem interested in using it.

    Some of the most Iconic of Atari's games, used Specialty Controllers: Spinners, Trackballs, Flight Yokes, etc. Pole Position, Tempest, Sprint / Super Sprint, Marble Madness, Crystal Castles, Star Wars, 720, APB, Major Havok, Centipede, TX-1, Warlords, Missile Command.. and more. You cant play these Masterpieces, unless you have the correct controllers. Yet, not a single Atari Handheld, or bartop / mini-arcade has a simple Optical Spinner. Its not hard to make a Spinner. Its not very costly, either. Make a Decent Handheld, with a Spinner, and analog triggers at Minimum... and the thing will probably sell like madd.
    A mini trackball might work... but often times, they dont spin well, when they are too small. Still, it would be better to have a semi-decent mini trackball.. rather than not having one at all.
    The Analog triggers, in addition to racing game pedals... could also be used for Paddles games, as well as Tank / Flight Controls.

    Bounty Bob Strikes Back was released for the 5200 on a very cool looking green cartridge. It's the most rare and valuable game for the system.

      Yes I know, but it was an Atari 8-bit computer game first and better known in that format, that was my point.

    Very very very clickbaity to say a Lynx branded Super Pocket is an Atari handheld. The GBA had Atari games, its like claiming the GBA is an Atari handheld. Its the company making the system who you can say it is an X handheld about, not a software dev who has licensed software to them.
    Plenty of Vitas were branded after 3rd party titles but noone ever suggested they were not a Sony system.

    Perfect pickup for you, being an Atari fan and not already owning a Super Pocket. As I've already got the Taito Super Pocket and all 5 Evercade Atari Carts it's not such a compelling purchase for me. I'm hoping there will be another Atari Lynx and Atari Arcade Cart and possibly some 8bit Atari Games on the next Home Computer Heroes cart. We live in hope :-) Great video and keep up the awesome work!

    It's made by Blaze, Evercade is the brand. Also, it's not a new Atari handheld. It uses the existing Super Pocket technology, it's just an Atari theme.

    • @TheLairdsLair
      @TheLairdsLair  Місяць тому +1

      It carries Atari branding on both the handheld and the box and is a collaboration between Blaze and Atari, much like Atari did with AtGames on the Flashback consoles or Retro Games Ltd on the A400 Mini, it definitely qualifies as an Atari console, regardless of who made it.

    Even the Lynx from years ago had a 3.5" screen. Retro gamers are well over 40. I wear 1.5+ glasses myself. And here's a 2.8" screen - a failure

      Hear, hear. I bought one of those cheap, and now ubiquitous, Chinese handhelds a few years ago (RS-97), but can't really use it because of the small screen (about 3"). I recently bought a model with a 4" screen, and it makes the world of difference. (RS36, or R36S, something like that.)

    I just wish they'd get their lawyers together and hunt down lots of Atari 2600 games that have been abandoned by companies that went bankrupt in the game industry crash of 83/84. Offer a bit of money to the copyright holders of titles that have been handed off to other companies, possibly to companies that don't even know they own the rights to some old Atari games. Get all those Starpath Supercharger games and slap 'em on a cartridge! Buy the rights to Telesys/U.S. Games from Quaker Oats, or 20th Century Games, it's not like they'll ever make any money off those titles any other way.
    I'm not happy they're wheeling out that Tempest prototype. It wasn't released because it was crap. I'm sure it could be done better - if you've seen the homebrew of Star Castle to the 2600, you know that games thought to be impossible to port can be achieved with time and effort (and not given four or five months to rush it out the door for a Christmas release or something). Compare the original Donkey Kong for the 2600 and then Donkey Kong Arcade for the 2600. The impossible is possible with modern development tools, skilled programmers, and plenty of time.
    If they made a portable Evercade that was Lynx themed, they'd have to make it flippable for left-handed people, as a nod to the original's clever design. And lefties wouldn't even have to struggle against the limited viewing angle of that early LCD screen when flipped. I wonder how many left-handed people would buy one just to have an Evercade they could use comfortably?

    • @TheLairdsLair
      @TheLairdsLair  Місяць тому +3

      Starpath merged with Epyx and the Epyx brand and all the I.P. is currently owned by Darren Melbourne, who is one half of Retro Games Limited of TheC64 Mini and A500 Mini fame. But yeah, there is loads of other stuff out there to snap up, good ones to go for would be Apollo, Data Age, Commavid, SpectraVideo, Xonox and, as you mentioned, U.S. Games simply because most of their games were original so there is no complicated 2nd party licensing involved.
      Yeah, the left handed play thing would be a must!

    they are not reprinting some of the carts already when they could be made to order on their website, thus becoming "rare"; the taito\capcom ones have exclusive titles on them- i dont want a plethora of additional devices laying about when i honestly already have WAY TOO MANY lol

    First thing: Atari now is not the same company the original company is now dead and resigned to history. The new company is AtariSA formally Infogrames who own the Atari brand.
    Second thing: No it is not a true Successor to the LYNX in any shape or form its just a Super Pocket which is just a cheap SBC running emulation in a cheap plastic crappy shell and sticking some Atari branded logos on it doesn't change that fact.
    If it was a true Successor it would at least have some resemblance to the original console and be branded as such. I have the LYNX emulator on my Steam Deck which i use to play a few LYNX games. So by your reckoning if i placed some Atari logos on it and ran the emulator my Steam Deck is a LYNX successor.
    Personally i stay away from the likes of the Evercade because it really is just a cash grab. Cheap plastic consoles containing cheap SBC's leeching off of peoples nostalgia of old video games.

    More landfill carp. Overpriced rubbish for what you are actually getting. Just one of these, having the most basic amount of storage and RAM could easily hold the entire catalogue of these now truly ancient games.
    This is classic case of there being way too many suckers out there, who could likely be sold air in jars if the Atari logo was present on the side.
    The one and only plus point is that the games are all legally licenced, so no Anbernic style piracy, beloved of so many of the 'top' reviewers on UA-cam.
    But I would question the actual value of the licence based on the age of the games. However, in a free market economy, if there are those willing to give blood voluntarily, milking it for all it's worth is always going to be the norm.
    The only way that these things stand a chance of staying out of the proverbial rubbish draw after the initial 5 minutes of excitement has worn off is if communities find ways of adding the illegal stuff onboard. It would not surprise me if such a feature is built in, even if not specifically promoted for obvious reasons, especially in the UK.
    Which would then mean that all of those other, far more powerful and capable handhelds from the open piracy hardware vendors will ironically look more attractive.
    This is nothing more than a gimmick that might be worth it at more like £15 but not at the advertised price.
    Next year I'll likely be able to pick one of these up at the local charity shops for around a fiver.

    • @TheLairdsLair
      @TheLairdsLair  Місяць тому +1

      They stay out the rubbish draw because they can play real cartridges and are designed for collectors, completely different to the many Chinese ROM based handhelds.

  • @VEGANVANIA
    @VEGANVANIA Місяць тому

    If you want to play Lynx ROMs, it's really the Evercade _EXP_ you'd want, for those widescreen dimensions, as opposed to the Super Pocket. The Evercade EXP is _so much better_ than the Lynx under every heading, and I am Evercade's harshest critic… the Super Pocket has quite a lot wrong with it, but I'll admit the red color scheme is *rather fetching.* ua-cam.com/video/UVJsB_NS9Bs/v-deo.html

    • @VEGANVANIA
      @VEGANVANIA Місяць тому +1

      The width of that EXP screen is perfect for Intellivision vol 1... and almost perfect for Lynx + GBA. The Super Pocket doesn't work well for anything but Sega Genesis! NES games run remarkably poorly on it.

  • @VEGANVANIA
    @VEGANVANIA Місяць тому

    In terms of value for money, that red-and-black Evercade "pocket" will feel like less of a ripoff than the Atari systems you've got in the top right corner of the screen there… there'll be a lot wrong with it (including the impossibility of attaching a second controller for two player mode, hm?) but at least the screen will be decent, unlike "My Arcade" pocket players and mini arcades (including the horrible My Arcade _Atari_ mini arcade!)… ua-cam.com/video/TkgG3yUH5WA/v-deo.html
