Patreon: / chrisstuckmann Chris Stuckmann reviews Robin Hood, starring Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx, Ben Mendelsohn, Eve Hewson, Tim Minchin, Jamie Dornan. Directed by Otto Bathurst.
I feel like the director of this movie watched the first Season of Arrow and played Assassins Creed and said hey let's make Robin Hood a superhero movie
What happens when the director's open stated goal was to make "bows feel as intense as gunfights" while not understanding that the tension and excitement of bow fighting is in it's precision with short moments of speed not stone piercing arrows that are as accurate as a Storm Trooper.
That movie is a 2-sided coin. Kevin Costner as Robin Hood is kinda boring, on the other side Alan Rickman is like the best "family friendly" villain ever. Hey Chris. There seems to exist quite a few instances where these movies happen. Good actors, effects team and budget, and yet they screw it up completely. Maybe it's worth a while to create a new special section, like your Hilariosity, where you investigate and analyse what really went wrong?? Maybe do some interviews with some of the actors a few months or even years afterwards when they are ready to talk? I would love to watch that. Love the show. Big fan!
I've been looking forward to this movie coming out for AGES... because it means never again will I have to suffer through the trailer that seemed to pop up in the previews for every single goddamn movie I went to for GODDAMN AGES. Like I don't even remember how long ago I first saw it, after awhile it just seemed like it had always been there and would always be there, waiting. Between that and the trailer for Mortal Engines, I've reached my cringe quota for the next several months. I think my favorite thing about Robin Hood was a pre-show clip of an interview I saw in one theater where a couple people involved with the movie were raving about how they had deliberately set out to make the action scenes with arrows look like action scenes with bullets. I remember thinking "my god, they actually think they're SELLING the movie right now, rather than adding another huge red warning sign for anyone who's already seen the trailer and is still optimistic enough to think 'well hey, maybe it won't be COMPLETELY awful?'"
@@knightshadowhimself When writing comments, it's hard to tell the emotion behind it. I've seen people call Legend of the Sword a "masterpiece" and it was made by the same Hollywood eggheads that made THIS garbage
Honestly the only version I really like is the 80ies "Robin of Sherwood" series with Michael Pread as Robin. Although my favourite characters was Nazir, he had super cool fighting style with two swords.
I tend to just look at the executive producers now and.... Bingo 2018/I Robin Hood (executive producer) 2016/I The Great Wall (executive producer) 2014 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (executive producer) 2013 After Earth (executive producer)
When I saw this movie, I actually kind of liked it. Then when I left the theatre I realized everything I liked was ripped directly from the Dark Knight trilogy.
I've been a fan of yours for a while mainly because you are not afraid to say what is on your mind. Thank you! Anyways I'm disabled so I only go see movies when I can get transportation. This Thursday I am and because of the time I have a choice between this movie, the new Possession movie and Mirai. Now I can remove Robin Hood from the choices lol.
Wished infinity war would have gotten it, that movie sucked more than all the MCU movies combined. And each one of those sucked hard. These stupid overated soulless products and ruinning cinema and fanboys are paying their money to see. everyone who saw that movie has the mind of a 7 year old.
I haven't seen the trailer (worst thing I could have done I know) but seen that they have ROBIN HOOD !! in the cinema and I said HELL YEAH !! THIS WILL BE AWESOME!!..... Well I can tell you one thing..... It wasn't awesome Not one bit Let me tell you about the flows that I couldn't stand from the beginning of the film 1. Troops being in small squads is a 20th century war tactic 2. Bows and arrows were never used as close quarter weapons 3. They definitely didn't have machine crossbows at that time 😂😂😂😂😂 I almost laughed at this 4. The outfits enraged me the whole time Shit heads !!!! They wear a lot of machine made clothes and definitely not woven which like is supposed to be 1000 years away 5. They had no helmets also enraged me 6. They sent the wounded back to england 😂😂😂😂😂 hell fuck NoOo 7. There were no "cities" in a sense in most of europe at that time, remember ? Land was owned by feudal lords who had castles and the peasants who worked in his fields lived around it in a between bad and goodish conditions, and definitely the people didn't have politicians among them as any opposition to the lord will be crushed immediately so No one can speak freely (they sure didn't have free of speach) 8. And the Arabs at that time were a hundred times more advanced (dark age in europe was the golden age for islamic regions, as science and scholars thrived) kind of the opposite of now (ironic isn't it !!) 9. The machines at the mines and the heavy working force and high numbers of people living there it's all industrial era social fabric and machines, it sure wasn't like that 1000 years ago around the crusades 10. Architecture again, they sure didn't have sophisticated architecture especially that is made of wood as seen in the buildings and slums, all they were able to build from wood was huts, and small bridges. anything more sophisticated than that they would use stones 11. Using an armour piercing arrows with a normal bow !!! WTF !!! Arrows are relatively small in diameter because they are aiming to be light, easily handled, and shot large distances The arrows used in the movie are usually used with long bows and they are so hard to shoot let alone holding several of them in one hand and shooting them very fast . . The movie is trying to mimic this day life and social structure but with old technology so it ends up silly, boring, full of errors and mistakes and inconsistencies
All valid point but a bit arcane for most movie viewers to understand. What annoyed me most was the costume design being almost 900 into the future with very modern trench coats and collared suits. And explosions. Explosions, explosions. I doubt there were that many explosions in the 1100's. I could accept all of these flaws, and those on your list, if the story took place in an alternate universe where it was the year 2018, but for whatever reason, technology stagnated in the 1200. This would make perfect sense because they are using traditional weapons with logical upgrades (and the costumes as well), but no real tech from electricity and other modern ideas.
I agree with everything that you all wrote, but there's one detail that is still cripplingly bothering me. Jaime's character got his hand chopped off, and in the next immediate scene he was shackled. My question is how is the shackle staying on his handless wrist? Pfm I guess. There were way too many problems with the movie. It was just horrible.
The movie didn't even try for historical accuracy. It was just a young-adultized version of Robin Hood... written for a stupid audience, by stupid people.
Well even though you put it in a smug way like the biggest neck beard, most of those points were right. Till you got to archery. Archers were very much a part of raiding homes for supporters in case the dedicated melee foot soldiers got over run and the sheer fact that dealing with two different types of weapons made them harder too deal with aka CQB. And actually archers were quite strong and taught from an early age, so maybe to you and me that shit was heavy but to them that was as easy as breathing. And they didn't use long bows, they used recurve and holding the arrows in one hand is the most historically accurate as you can get from japan to Saudi Arabia to England to even native American's america they shoot arrows that way. The only ones going around with quivers were mounted archers.
Great review...again!! I do think you need to include the 1973 animated Disney "Robin Hood" in the group...beloved by people young and old (My 3 toddlers request it all the time!) The 90's one with Costner and Rickman also rocked in a totally different way. Sad to see good actors sucked into a bad movie. I will stay tuned for further reviews!!
I saw a lot of people who were confused that Robin Hood was a Lord. If you look at the original legend, he was a rich dude who got run out of town and became a thief because of how the impoverished were being treated. Disney's Robin Hood doesn't do a great job at addressing it and I'm not even sure it addresses it at all. They treated it as if he was a commoner who fell in love with a noble woman, and went on the lamb. The BBC television series based on Robin Hood gets fairly close to the original tale with some creative liberties here and there. It just baffles me how after countless theatrically released films, over 6 live action television series (including a prominent role in an episode of Doctor Who), 1 Disney animated film, and many other stories in a variety of mediums, you figure people would know this part of the Robin Hood character by now.
Robin Hood and Little John Walkin' through the forest Laughin' back and forth At what the other'ne has to say Reminiscin', This-'n'-thattin' Havin' such a good time Oo-de-lally, Oo-de-lally Golly, what a day
i stopped watching immediately in the beginning when they were treating their bows like tactical assault infiltration weapons. i was like... wtf is going on?! those are fkn bows hahaha
Thanks again for the great review, Chris! You saved me from wasting money on this movie. I wish I could find a way to get you on an episode of How Did This Get Made, for movies like this, or one of your Hilariocity reviews.
-Robin Hood being a medieval rip-off of Batman -The whole Robin/Marian/Will Scarlet love triangle is indistinguishably reminiscent of the Bruce/Rachel/Harvey Dent dynamic, and is executed poorly with Will Scarlet being evil all because Robin fucked his girl. -Robin Hood/Little John rip-off of Bruce/Alfred dynamic This movie is so bad at ripping off The Dark Knight that it's hilarious.
Actually, I think most people would love a good Robin Hood movie ...Hollywood just refuses to give us one, instead giving us these re-imagined bulls* things every few years
I'd like a good one. Unfortunately, to date the only good/decent ones are the Errol Flynn one from 1938 and the Disney cartoon. For some reason, Robin Hood and King Arthur we just CAN'T get right.

Great review and beard is looking dooooope 👌
A true cinematic masterpiece. Anything less than an A is a disservice to the art, this is up there with Pixels and Jack and Jill in terms of quality.
Please, tell me you're being sarcastic
@@sadlobster1 what do you think isn't it obvious

Jack and Jill is a much better movie than this

Honestly the only version I really like is the 80ies "Robin of Sherwood" series with Michael Pread as Robin. Although my favourite characters was Nazir, he had super cool fighting style with two swords.
Hell yeah. loved that show. one of the best version of Robin Hood, i think.
I couldn't tell if the setting was sci-fi or middle ages when I first watched the trailer.
Don't worry, the director was equally confused when making the movie.
Still confused about that even after watching the movie
Hell I'd love a full on sci-fi Robin Hood. It's worked before!

The trailer from this movie already said everything someone neede to know...
I tend to just look at the executive producers now and.... Bingo
2018/I Robin Hood (executive producer)
2016/I The Great Wall (executive producer)
2014 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (executive producer)

It wasn't awesome
Not one bit
Let me tell you about the flows that I couldn't stand from the beginning of the film
1. Troops being in small squads is a 20th century war tactic
2. Bows and arrows were never used as close quarter weapons
3. They definitely didn't have machine crossbows at that time 😂😂😂😂😂 I almost laughed at this
4. The outfits enraged me the whole time
Shit heads !!!! They wear a lot of machine made clothes and definitely not woven which like is supposed to be 1000 years away
5. They had no helmets also enraged me
6. They sent the wounded back to england 😂😂😂😂😂 hell fuck NoOo
7. There were no "cities" in a sense in most of europe at that time, remember ? Land was owned by feudal lords who had castles and the peasants who worked in his fields lived around it in a between bad and goodish conditions, and definitely the people didn't have politicians among them as any opposition to the lord will be crushed immediately so No one can speak freely (they sure didn't have free of speach)
8. And the Arabs at that time were a hundred times more advanced (dark age in europe was the golden age for islamic regions, as science and scholars thrived) kind of the opposite of now (ironic isn't it !!)
9. The machines at the mines and the heavy working force and high numbers of people living there it's all industrial era social fabric and machines, it sure wasn't like that 1000 years ago around the crusades
10. Architecture again, they sure didn't have sophisticated architecture especially that is made of wood as seen in the buildings and slums, all they were able to build from wood was huts, and small bridges. anything more sophisticated than that they would use stones
11. Using an armour piercing arrows with a normal bow !!! WTF !!!
Arrows are relatively small in diameter because they are aiming to be light, easily handled, and shot large distances
The arrows used in the movie are usually used with long bows and they are so hard to shoot let alone holding several of them in one hand and shooting them very fast
.
@@tjsogmc I agree with every word you said
I agree with everything that you all wrote, but there's one detail that is still cripplingly bothering me.
Glad somebody mentioned the BBC series. My favourite version of the story, by far, and Jonas Armstrong was born to play the role.

To the film's credit, Robin Hood has an English accent.
But this Robin Hood version is fucking dull as shit and not to mention is fucking horrible!!
Welsh.
Didn't Man in Tights beat this film to the punch for first "englishman" to play as Robin Hood?
@SmashStomp Inc it’s a reference to a joke in the RH men in tights version
The reason this movie pissed me off because it's a complete rip-off of The Dark Knight.
How?
-Robin Hood being a medieval rip-off of Batman
-The whole Robin/Marian/Will Scarlet love triangle is indistinguishably reminiscent of the Bruce/Rachel/Harvey Dent dynamic, and is executed poorly with Will Scarlet being evil all because Robin fucked his girl.
-Robin Hood/Little John rip-off of Bruce/Alfred dynamic
This movie is so bad at ripping off The Dark Knight that it's hilarious.
@@olufolarinoduntan9097 Spoilers,
Scarlet also literally turns into Two-Face, the wound is even in the same area similar to Dent's.
it has even something similar to Joker Them in the main rebel scene
The only thing I don’t regret about going to see this movie is the trailers I saw for Mary Queen of Scots and Vice.
Chris giving an F-rating to a film in 2018 is as rare as a needle in a haystack. He only gave 2 films in 2018 an F!

They haven’t made a good Robin Hood movie since 1938.
This Robin Hood makes Russell Crowe's Robin Hood appear to be a cinematic masterpiece.

There's been tons of advertising for it.

Anyone know who sings the thin Lizzie bad reputation cover that is on the trailer to this film??
I don’t think anybody wants anymore Robin Hood movies
Actually, I think most people would love a good Robin Hood movie ...Hollywood just refuses to give us one, instead giving us these re-imagined bulls* things every few years
I do. A REAL one. Not these Costner shits on steroids.
I'd like a good one. Unfortunately, to date the only good/decent ones are the Errol Flynn one from 1938 and the Disney cartoon. For some reason, Robin Hood and King Arthur we just CAN'T get right.
I liked the 2010 one from Ridley Scott, though I'm in the minority on that one. Always hated the animated one, even as a kid.
