Aynsley's playing has always stood out to me.. he knows how to 'breathe'.. has great tone, touch, and phrasing. It is bewildering as to why he isn't more popular among contemporary players. Just happy that I'm aware of him. Great playing.

Aynsley is so underrated, he just exudes passion. He speaks with so much heart, musically and verbally, and everything he does has a genuine purity (without snobbery) ♥️

I have just discovered Aynsley’s playing. I really enjoy his playing, more and more as I listened. His style and the way he lets his notes breathe and the space between his notes
He’s a good guy and sincerely loves his work. I’ve seen a few of his shows and he impresses every time. Great guitar guy.
What an amazing player - yes so underrated. He is the full package, voice, rhythm, timing, tone and great song writing and brilliant live. His band is pretty useful too.
Absolutely love Lister's playing! First discovered him on an episode of That Pedal Show and was immediately blown away. Check out his live performance of "Hurricane" with Mick Taylor...Fabulous stuff!
Got a 1979 Strat, Heavy as an anvil, you can fit a pick into the gap on the bass side of the neck! but I absolutely love it! great neck, total Yngwie and Jimi vibe! and it sounds like a strat should to me.
What a great guy Aynsley is. So modest and practical, but then quite a lot of great players are in reality like this. A joy to hear the music, and listen to his thoughts on an underrated decade for Strats. Nice one team! 🎶🌟👍

I'm not a Strat fan, except for "mine." A college girlfriend liked a Paisely Pink Strat, an '87, and I decided to buy it off the wall. It was 1987, and it's killer. The Japanese Paisley Fenders made in the late 80s were based on the '72 American Fender Strats. I like it! Wahi' Valleys
Great video! I have a late ‘74 Strat with flat pole pickups and a neck that can move if you really wrench it. Very heavy too. But it is one of the best sounding strats I’ve ever played. Very resonant and has that sound. So I agree- don’t overlook 70’s strats! 🎸

Saw aynsley support walter trout around 1998. Walter trout used a 70s strat like the white one.
I had a 1976 all original Stratocaster in natural ash.
It was literally the best sounding Strat I've ever owned. I got rid of it to buy older pre CBS Strats. I thought I was upgrading. Nope. The '76 just had a magic tone and sustain. The pickups measured somewhere in the 4.5K which might have contributed to this tone.
I've noticed that it's the 1974's that are sweet as.
Saw Ansley play a solo gig at St Mary’s Church, Twyford a few weeks ago. Fantastic performance. He was playing a sliver strat through a fender combo(not sure of the model). Great sound. Looking forward to seeing him play with his band using the Rift combo.

I have 79 bought in the early 80s w hardtail bridge, 3 bolt neck, & a rosewood board. I always found it very heavy and for whatever reason I thought a real Strat should have a tremolo bar... so I bought a real Fender 70s repro body (Mexican) w/ an installed tremolo, springs and all, and installed all the 79 electronics, pick guard,etc. and of course the neck on the new body. The new body is significantly lighter and the neck pocket is cut much more precisely than the original so the neck fits quite snuggly (CNC?). I had played a number of new American Strats, some custom shops, but none sounded as good to me as my old 79. With the new body with the tremolo this is one of the best sounding and playing Strats I've ever encountered. Wonderful neck and great original pickups. For what it's worth...

The birdeye neck make a big difference. It transports vibrations from fingerboard to the body with ease due to its extra density. Flame and Birdseye maple neck sounds just like a maple/rosewood combination. If it's normal maple it absorbs some of the sound and makes it a bit muddy if you just using a maple neck or maple neck/ maple gingerbread. The neck shape 2 third of the whole guitar sound due to its length.

So I started playing guitar in the mid 70s. For me I've always loved big headstock strats as I grew up with Blackmore, Trower, Hendrix of course etc. My first electric was a Columbus big headstock Strat copy. Recently I bought my first ever USA Strat... A USA performer with a big headstock 😂
Great stuff ! Don’t remember ever seeing a birdseye maple neck on a 70s Strat . Mate had a 73 with a maple neck and I’ve never played a better Strat since . Three position switch and never choked , great guitar . In summary don’t believe the “ 70s Strats are rubbish “ hype.

I had a 74 hard tail. Sold it towards part of my first house deposit in 1988. Got it back as part of a wedding present in 1989. Traded it in early 90’s for a strat plus which turned out horrible.
I have a '73 sunburst with a Fender Classic Vintage bridge ... desperately needs new frets; but sounds very good! No point in having a bunch of Catastraters that all sound the same, what?
He got lucky with his 70s strats. We all know 90% are too heavy and weedy sounding. The main thing is he uses 11s with a higher action and that will give you a better percussive attack with any Fender. I like his approach, more physical like a drummer, he movez with his Guitars dynamics. Cool.
Most all of the early-mid 70's (white pickguard) Strats are still Alder and weigh no more than 60's Strats on average, but Fender switched the body wood to Northern Hard Ash in the mid-late 70's (black pickguard era) and that's when the weights went from ~ 7.5lbs to 9.5lbs and more. Those thick finishes used in the late 70's did not help the weight as well.
It is widely known that Fender had Quality Control issues in the 70s and that the problems grew more and more as the decade rolled on. However, do we actually know that 90% are too heavy and weedy sounding? I've played exactly 3 different 70s strats so far. One '72, one '74 and one '78. The '78 wasn't good at all but the other two was great! I own the '74 and would've bought the '72 if I could've afforded it. I'm not comparing with pre-CBS because I have no experience from any of those years.
Which model of Marshall amp is this exactly please? Sounds awesome!
1979 Marshall 2144, it was modified by previous owner though so not quite the same as the original, his signature amp is directly reverse engineered and designed from this amp

I used to have a 71 best strat. I ever had. OF course it was last of the 4 bolt, and no bullet. Shoulda, woulda, kept it. IT just played sounded nice.
Does anybody know the exact model Marshall that Aynsley is using here? I know its modded, but Im trying to remember if its a 76 JMP?

Aynsley I wonder if you have the rare 'Black Bobbin' pickups in the 74'? I recently purchased an early 74' neck date Sratocaster and it has the rare black bobbin pickups. Black bobbins were discontinued and the Grey bottoms came in around mid/end 1964 however for some reason they reappear in 1973 for that year only. Maybe yours has these pickups and this contributes to the sound?
My 73 has all black bobbin pickups. No-one seems to know why they appeared that year.
Yes it seems a mystery. Did they just happen to find bin full of unused black bobbin Strat pickups? Its unlikely that Fender specially produced these so they must have been new 'old' stock that was discovered. @@zeerust2000
Footnote...What I thought was a 74' year of production is now confirmed by the neck date as being April 1973. For anyone thats cares, I thought the last digit being a 3 was the day but it's actually the year. The 2nd last digit being a 4 is the day.

Watch what happens. I started playing in the later 70s, when the vintage craze was just starting to happen. Before that,they were just used guitars that you could get cheap. All the overblown myths about 70's Fenders started about that time also. Most of the 70s Fenders I owned or played were good.Yes, a few were heavy, the three bolt neck was never a problem for me, and all the other myths that were taking on a life of their own,I didn't see.For years all you would hear is 70s Fenders suck. I would think,what is everybody talking about?All the ones I play or played were way good than bad. Not all of them are resonant "tone rockets", but neither are all guitars from any era. Most guitar players are just as stupid or worse than everybody else. Like the old saying goes,if you tell lies long enough,people take it as gospel. All of a sudden I'm seeing more and more players using 70s strats .Next thing you know,everybody will be saying how great 70's strats are, and price will skyrocket.Get one now while they're still affordable-for the past two years or so,I've seen prices move up 1k or more....for the Fenders that "suck".

This is just bollocks. OK, it's a nice Strat but all this nonsense about '70's' Strats being some kind of magical item and having a 'certain 70's sound' is daft. I have an all original 1975 Strat I bought 2nd hand in 1976 and it sounds just fine...but I have x4 Strats, a couple of Squiers and a MIM from a couple of years ago and I can hardly hear any difference between them. Plug into an amp and throw a band around me and any difference in sound between them is utterly lost. It's a guitar. End.
Yes! But I think the point is to show us that we should stop believing that 70s strats are crap just because they are from the 70s.

I’ve got a 75 sunburst maple neck. Swapped the black pickguard for a vintage white. Got it off a gambler that won it in a card game in Reno USA .
Best Strat I’ve owned. Rings like a bell has superior sustain and tone. I’ve played pre CBS , L Series , late 50s and this guitar is better than all of them. I wired the bridge pickup to the middle tone pot. Great guitars.
