As an composer and arranger, thank you so much for this detailed guide, I feel like it improved my clarinet writing instantly!

you can also buzz without the barrel. its more difficult but you can get a higher pitched buzz. also if you turn your mouthpiece around with the reed facing out and curl your lip around so that your top teeth dont bite the reed, you can get a brighter sound but all of the notes still more or less come out, except theres more difficulties higher up in the altissimo. hahaha needless to say i screw around with my clarinet a lot

Some of those effects are quite awkward, but really awesome, like playing with the mouthpiece :))
    Either way, amazing video, thanks!

Peter Schikele/PDQ Bach demanded it from players in at least one band piece!

Thanks so much! For now I'm sticking to 2 minute videos (compare the view count and length to my 2 minute clarinet video). But if you're interested in in-depth stuff like this, I'm posting lots of extra content in the Patron-Only of my Patreon!

HA! Now I know where some of the cartoon voices come from where the cartoon character is not enouncing words but talking - a la Charlie Brown's teacher. Great videos Josh! I've unknowingly written some "bad" passages for clarinet. And bad ain't bad as in good.

Could you please make a video on how to improve technique on various special effects? I am having some difficulty learning them as I am in high school band. Love your content and hope you respond.

Regarding the lack of Ab/Eb side key that most clarinets have -- this is specific to altos on down, but it's not uncommon for composers to want players to transition from low Ab to Eb on a fairly quick basis (8th notes). While Bb sopranos don't ever have to worry about that, learning how to minimize the gap between the notes without a left hand Ab/Eb key becomes crucial.
Conversely, you'll find pieces that don't utilize the low Eb on alto/basses because the composer (or transcriber/arranger) assumes the instrument wont have the ability to play below written E when in fact they can reach that extra (and crucial!) half-step down.

Is it possible to sing in harmony with the band instrument while you play?

Why didn't you talk about the velour trill. Try saying a French "r" while playing. I used it for the cat's growl in Peter and the Wolf. Way easier than and flutter and way more effective than just a Tr.

Too bad you didn't make one of these for the Eb Cl.

there's actually a better way to do flutter tonguing, if you flutter the tongue more in the back of the throat rather than trying to do it towards the reed its much easier

Can you play with a recorder top part instead as an effect? :)

    • @JoshPlotner
      @JoshPlotner  5 років тому +1

Not really... it’s just going to sound like bad recorder, assuming you get a seal

idea : play without the reed
it's ... possible, just very quiet and very inaudible

The video was far better if sounds were produced by a good clarinetist, instead of only chalumeau register and special effects.
