- An SUV was destroyed in an explosion at a Van Nuys shopping center parking lot late Thursday night. Sky5 was over the scene near the intersection of Van Nuys Boulevard and Sherman Way shortly after 11 p.m.
The badly mangled Toyota 4Runner could be seen in a Super King Markets parking lot. Car parts and debris from the blast were scattered many yards away.
KTLA's Rick Chambers reports on May 24, 2024.

The Toyota didn’t explode. Something inside the Toyota exploded.
The person was carrying Butane cans inside the car, watch the whole news
I don't walk. My body is walking
It exploded due to flammable gas inside the passenger compartment igniting. A vehicle still explodes even if it’s not caused by the vehicle, itself. It happened all the time with car bombs.
The balloon didnt pop, something inside the balloon popped.
He was smoking with butane canisters inside. 🤦😆

As they should. Once again the media trying to get everyone to look away from the homeless junkie epidemic plaguing this country.
@@pentester7475 it was butane he was not transporting it safely there was a leak and butane being flammable if the butane to oxygen gets in the right mix levels range can explode and make an SUV into a bomb which is why Toyota is not to blame for that issue because that is user error not a manufacturing issue so saying Toyota SUV explodes is like saying that a ford SUV explodes because it's a ford

No, did you listen to the reporter? Canisters of butane leaked inside the vehicle. The vehicle really did explode. The entire vehicle was basically a fuel-air bomb.

No, the vehicle didn't explode. Butane tanks inside exploded. The vehicle's gas tank didn't even ignite. Nothing part of the vehicle exploded.
The car did explode though. Your argument is like if I said no tanks or jeeps exploded in WW2. Just an explosive round flying at 2000 f/s hit it.

@Treetopflyer777, my question is, was he "huffing".... Consider that like other gases which are generally colorless/odorless, they introduce an odor so you can detect the gas, "Butane is often mixed with small amounts of mercaptans to give the unburned gas an offensive smell easily detected by the human nose." So was he huffing the gas and getting so high that he was oblivious about the danger and when there was an ignition source, well the obvious happened. Could he have been suicidal and attempting to blow himself up.... I mean I honestly don't see how any average person can sit inside an enclosed vehicle filled with flammable gas vapors and "not realize it" unless they're already out of their minds or they're intentionally doing it. What the ignition source was, Idk whether he was lighting up a cigarette or.... But we can clearly see a "bright flash" just before the explosion.
@@zenithperigee7442 He'd have to be huffing gallons to get that level of buildup. Watch it slowly, I believe the roof is now in LEO.

Toyota SUVs are now known to randomly explode, thanks to the clickbaity headline. 😆
@@fitybux4664 If it were a one off clickbaity title then this could be attributed to naked greed, just trying to get eyeballs to sell ads. I've been in autobody collision repair since 95. I've seen plenty of cars demolished in accidents...this has to be in the top 3 I can remember! Look at the lift gate, the skin is peeled off! Epstein didn't kill himself
Hey they just found one of them guilty on 34 counts of business fraud though.
To all those wondering why he wasn't hurt that bad, It's because he was inside the explosion and not on or close to the outside of it. An explosion explodes outward, so the butane leaking inside the vehicle turned the entire passenger compartment into a "bomb" that he was inside of, and once he detonated it by lighting a cigarette or whatever he did, the passenger compartment exploded outward, meaning only things on or close to the outside of the passenger compartment would receive the brunt of the blast.
Well explained

Why mention Toyota? And why not mention the actual model instead of SUV..I mean, surely almost everyone knows what model it is. Headline should be more “butane tanks explode in suv.”
True, as' hole clickbait. They want to mislead people into thinking it exploded by a vehicle fault.
And don't say the model to make people watch the video to know which model is the potentially faulty one.
Good to see News Channels even using another company besides Tesla in the headlines for clickbait. Even reports that have nothing to do with the car “aka road rage from Tesla driver” get thrown in headlines. Time for another company to get the treatment.
The reporter wanted to deliberately mislead people into thinking something is wrong with Toyota vehicles. Nothing more than a scare tactic. So tired of these so called reporters trying to make news vs reporting factual events.

Reminds me of the Mafia hits of the 80s in Italy. When the most dangerous part of the day was starting your car.
And the 1990s. Scorch marks going four stories high at one place I showed up. They delayed some of them to nail the first responders... be careful out there. Most of the time they happened after curfew. One blow out the glass of the laundromat and scortched into the asphalt on one street... it blew and was out again in under a half hour with no cops... just a shopkeeper sweeping up glass and giving a dirty look to any passerby. The mafia are douchehags. Who else thought this was going to be a story about an ELECTRIC SUV BATTERY exploding? I did.
Batteries don't explode
I thought it was a Tesla.
@@ryen7512 even so, that's what I thought they were going to report
@@ryen7512 High electric currents can lead to "thermal runaway" - a chain reaction that can cause a battery to overheat, catch fire, and explode.
@@mfrmorrobaybut batteries don’t explode like this. The slowly burn and the “explosions” are actually small in nature, not an overall loud explosion that can be felt in either direction.
Why you should NEVER put an explosive gas container inside your vehicle , no propane , gasoline , butane , etc ...
You can't even fart
So, how do you transport it home then?
And.... you get your canisters to home/worksite how?
Please enlighten me. I'm dying to know
chances are its a slow leak. The only one I double check is acetylene, if your buying that get a squirt bottle with some soap inside and check the cylinder or at least crouch down next to it to check for a audible leak test at the welding store. Then just don't leave it in the car, and don't be cheap if you lose the cannister cover.
and IMO the #1 cause of leaks is refilling butane or propane mini canisters. People do it on unrated bottles. Someone was doing it until I caught the canister leaking once with a sticky valve. The valves are just too cheap and people use dodgy transfer equipment. Also, no one seems to re-lubricate the valves after using, meaning the butane transfer washes away the oil protecting the valve from corrosion. Then you have a rusty bottle top that starts leaking. the big cylinder is used to refill the little cylinder that is used to power the mini stove to save money. (and don't try it, it needs the proper lubricant, i dunno if you can even apply it, you don't want swollen gaskets)
I think they said his name is Walter White…
Can we expect more of these situations? / With the ‘homeless’ migrating into California.

Once saw a welder's sparks ignite a butane lighter hanging on a wall. Blew a hole in the wall and ripped the jacket in half. People forget what flammable means.
I don't see how butane canisters just detonate like that. I wonder if there was a leak, and the gas concentration inside the car became just right for an explosion, and some spark set it off.
He seems unharmed, but he randomly calls for someone to answer the phone.
I designed my campervan with no fuel burning appliances. It is electric only. The only fuel I have is the gas that runs the engine. Electric stove, electric heat. No propane and no butane. @@deathpunch23It was clearly a leak. The interior of the car filled with an explosive mixture. Butane, like other fuels, can NOT explode in the can. It needs oxygen. So he either had a leaky stove, or one of the canisters was leaking on its own. When the butane got to about 11% or greater of the air in the car, the slightest spark would have set it off.
