His profits from this commercial single went to the American Red Cross.
Released the same month was a version by Byron MacGregor (real name Gary Mack), who was then news director at the powerhouse Top 40 AM station CKLW in Windsor, Ontario, right next door to Detroit. Do have this on a rare compilation LP, 'America-A Tribute' (closing track), with two oddities. First, sounds like it's re-channeled. Also, there is a short spoken introduction before the record desrcibing some info about it.
Matched only by An Open Letter to My Teenage Son 🙂
AMERICA
Clearly, the other version sounds better. However, if either came on the radio, off I went to another station.
Small wonder Mr. MacGregor's version ranked lower on the Radio & Records chart (which, being airplay-only, 'Prof' does not include in his chart positions) compared to BB, CB or RW.
There was even another version out, by Tex Ritter - issued just prior to or around the time of his death.
Are you an American? If so, my guess is that you vote for the democrock party.
Thanks. I was in one of those 59 cities flattened in '74 and I appreciate your support.
Why because the truth hurts?
