What an incredible story of a man who was always thinking of others, a man of integrity. Your words made me feel that I was there. Thank you for the work that went into your film.

😹👍 Yer doin' it wrong mate! Where is the sensationalism? Where is the hyperbole? Where is the repeating/recapitulation/statement of the same handful of facts and scant solid data six or eight times to stretch five minutes of content into a 42 minute programme?!
      Seriously though, Bravo Zulu sir.

Great Bit Of History. Sad Though. It Kind Of Makes Me Mad That People Saw The Lighthouse Lights And Told The Coast Guard And They Did Not Check Right Away! What Were They Thinking? I Mean Connect The Dots Coast Guard. Missing Plane/Pilot, Lighthouse Lights Come On, Why In God's Name Would You Not Immediately Check It Out?! SHEESH!
Great Stuff Restless Viking! I Hope Someone Puts A Memorial Plaque With The Whole Story In The Lighthouse Rebuild!

I've been told (after the video posted) that only 1 person reported the light to the local police. And apparently, she was older and they couldn't find anyone else to confirm it.

Interesting! Thanks for sharing. Perhaps the restorers should consider stocking the lighthouse with some kind of small watercraft, for emergencies. Inflatable raft, kayak, canoe, whatever.

As a kid in middle school (mid/late 70's) my favorite class was Michigan History. Doesn't hurt that the teacher (and his wife) was good friends with my parents. I couldn't get enough of that class. We spend many weekends in the summer at the cottage in Indian River that belonged to the teacher and his wife. In a sense, I lived that class. These videos remind me of those classes some 40+ years ago.

Fascinating story! So creepy and mysterious. Poor Master Sargent Wyman - he was so close, yet so far. He somehow snatched his life from the jaws of certain death, only to drown a few days later trying to make it to land. Sad.

Yes sir. I love real stories like scary bear attacks. I have learned a lot for real life tales. Tales of self rescue are my favorites. We get lots of pressure ridges on ice. Where it presses together and shaves ice into a ridge.

Appreciate this history and Master Sergeant Wyman’s will to survive. It’s hindsight bias on my part, but why wouldn’t the USCG keep their lighthouses stocked with provisions for such a, nautical or aeronautical, self-rescue event? In WWII Floating Hotels (i.e. rescue buoys) provided a chance for downed pilots or wrecked sailors. It seems appropriate to make “rescue hotel” part of any lighthouse’s mission-especially when in USCG active service or part of a historical keeper’s association. There will likely be another ditch or wreck on the Great Lakes. P.S. How’s your new HQ garage project going? All the best!

They need to put a rubber lifeboat or dingy on the lighthouse.
And some emergency radio or emergency GPS that has an emergency rescue beacon on it,and some flare guns for emergency use,and food rations.
It's sad to hear the cavalier attitude the coastguard ppl had back then!
When you here there is something going on out there, knowing a man is down in his airplane, and missing, you say,ah,we'll go out it in a few weeks!
    You jump on it,NOW!
I READ another story of tragedy with this same attitude up in Quebec, when the village of Le Rocheleiu sunk 300 feet into the ground!
They just let ppl.scream for help till they died, but only pulled out a few !
Whike others kept yelling for help till the cries faded away!
So sad,we had/have such a cavalier attitude towards search and rescue !
    😮
