- Here is my own personal review of the winners from Adepticon 2024 Golden Demon.
A big CONGRATULATIONS to all the entrants and especially the winners, the overall quality of this years entries looked superb.

Wow really impressive minis, The Vampire good GOD that was phenomenal the head missing made it amazing. I used to collect Space Wolves and Eldar ages ago I'm thinking of getting back into the hobby

It’s interesting the way the competition has evolved over the years, and for the better. I’ll start by sounding like the old man I am, “back in my day”, hahaha, entries had to be mounted on the base they came with in the blister pack or box. This severely restricted any creativity with basing and you ended up with entries mounted on huge display settings, but then that was mounted on the base the model came with, creating a silly looking entry. I think it was only duel/diorama that was allowed a scenic base and even that was restricted in size.
I do like the imagination that goes with creating ‘the setting’ as it were, so that artists can try to convey the idea and thought processes behind their entries, but I do think that maybe too much emphasis is put on everything around the model when, at the end of the day, this is a painting competition first and foremost, not an art competition, not a scenic competition, and the entries should be judged wholly and solely, in the first instance, on the painting of the model in question. Only when judges can’t be split on which one model is better than the other paint wise, should they then start to look at the composition of the piece.
I’ve been a judge at painting comps on a number of occasions so I know how hard it is to do and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone because you’re never going to make everyone happy.
These are all great entries in their own right and my hats off to every entrant, it’s a tough comp and a nerve wracking one to enter.
For my 2 cents worth the slayer sword winner is great, very well done, but it’s not an original idea. There was an entry a few years ago that was, if memory serves me, a depiction of an Empire town in good times and upside down in bad. No for me the sword should have gone to the 40k single mini gold, the Eldar riding the raptor.

Thanks bud, very thoughtful and insightful comments as usual. The empire upside downy mini you mentioned was by Max Cexwish I believe, a wonderful piece too. I think that one rotated, if I remember and showed 2 sides of life, but this one is a reflection, which made it slightly different, both are outstanding and very creative. More of this sort of content will be coming, so keep your eyes peeled...lol
Dude Neil generated that backdrop with AI… he should have been disqualified. It is really cringe to listen you praise him for his great work on the backdrop…
my apologies bud, I wasn't aware of that at the time of the video. I guess this changes my overall view of the piece, maybe??? as a painted miniature its still really good and Neil is an exceptional painter. I guess its up for debate about printed backdrops...I am on the fence also about not letting people use 3rd party sculpts in the open category...what are your thoughts on that?

Wow what a harsh review of my squat bot. Bit redundant to give it such a harsh review then keep saying sorry for the bad review.
It's not like I spent a huge amount of time painting it and then was in tears of elation when it won a bronze to put up with people telling me my work is rubbish.
I can see you think highly of your own work but you'd never find me ripping into anything you paint regardless of my opinions.
Sorry bud, but its not like that at all. I really raved about your other pieces. AND, I stated that it may be because of the pic/photo. Not harsh at all, just my opinion about what I saw in the pic.
@@brushmaster66 came across as pretty harsh to me. Even my son overhead and was taken aback.
So, first of all James, please watch from 59:23, I have nothing but good things to say about your other entries. Secondly, I state MANY times and in the description that i am critiquing pics and how things look totally different in the hand, I said similar things about Rich Gray's 3rd place mini, I thought his other entries were a lot better (and also think Rich is and incredible painter too), I totally stand by what I said about your piece. Thirdly 'It's not like I spent a huge amount of time painting it ' - then what are you complaining about?? why are you bleeting over something that you didn't even try and make an effort with??? I've seen a couple of other reviews that have said similar things about this entry btw...Fourthly, Where do you get off public slating me for thinking so highly of my own work? Whats that based on bud, please show me, send me the links please, as to my knowledge I don't go around publicly shouting about how good I am, it seems that YOU are the one doing that by your reaction to this review, which i will state again I said a lot of great and positive things about you as a painter and modeler

@@brushmaster66 you're tag line on your profile says "you have been painting GREAT miniatures and want to share your expertise" comes across as self gratifying. You've got to have a fair amount of self importance to put out a video confidently slating others work. You also can't then expect those artists not to be offended.
When I said "it's not like I spent ages painting it" that was sarcastic which obviously didn't come across in text.
