Tom Petty always left his songs open for interpretation, depending on how you feel that day, it can take on a different meaning, most of his songs help me calm my anxiety, to relax, let my creativity run wild and relate with the pain in my life, and the hardships I had faced that made me a kinder person. You can look at this song and music video in multiple ways. Tolerance, be kind of people because you don't know what they are going through. Or it's a song to calm your nerves, roll down the windows and drive the back roads. Looking at it from Tom Petty's perspective, The world can be in chaos, his mind wild, thoughts swirling, but the moment he sits down and do the one thing he love -- music -- then music takes that pain away, rips away those thoughts, and just chill. No disrespect, but two of the simplest and most repetitive songs "written for radio" in Tom's catalog?... I'm confused. I mean almost all Petty songs are great, but these seem like strange choices for reactions or an introduction to Tom.
@@_Common_Logic_ Free Fallin was one of his most sophisticated songs. When he did "Refugee, " everyone said he was a poor man's Bob Dylan--funny they were Willburys together. The older he got, the better he got. "I should have known it" from the the Mojo album is an example. The fact that he had hot women in the videos for the two tunes I suggested is irrelevant--kind of, it did get him extra attention on MTV.
@@henchmusic5878 - It may have come off as sophisticated, but have you ever heard Petty explain what the song was about, how it came about, and how seriously he took the "creative process" during the one night he came up with the tune just to appease Jeff Lynne? Tom was great at making "deep" sound simple, and he purposely eliminated any "unnecessary chords from most of his writing, but I (personally) don't find Free Fallin' anywhere near as thought-provoking as many of his deeper cuts like "Dogs on the Run" (Not that I'd suggest it for the average reaction channel). If you really want to hear Petty channel his "inner Dylan" (with a side-order of Lou Reed), go back and revisit "I Don’t Know What To Say To You" ... After that he gives the woman a look that I read as "damn you nearly messed up the whole thing" As soon as you know this you just can't over look it
I seem to remember that with MuchMusic in Canada, the hours of the day that they had to censor things, they had "tnioj" overdubbed on it instead of any sort of beep.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers are one of my favorite bands! Tom is a genius songwriter with a great sense of humor. You can't go wrong with any of his catalogue! He left this Earth way to soon! RIP Tom Petty
Tom Petty is one of them ones that you don’t realize how great he was until you pick up a greatest hits/best of package - all of a sudden you see the track list and listen to the songs and it dawns on you that you recognize 90% of the songs AND they’re absolute fire! RIP
I've always taken it as he's got a lot of stuff going on in his life that people fail to consider, which explains why all the craziness in the background is out of focus. Everyone just looks at him and not what's happening around him. Whether or not the events in the background literally were occurring to him or if they were just pure, random craziness I don't know, but the point still stands.
cynicalstream 42 I think I’m one of the elite, that watches the background more than anything, when I watch something. (For example, Meatballs the movie, and of course, Airplane!)
I think he was just using the people in the background prostitute circus people possibly girl being assaulted that pulled a gun on a man and like the transgender person singing the part you don't know how it feels to be me. Basically telling the world they don't know how it feels to be the people they look down on and constantly criticize or make fun of..
Mr. Tom Petty, Unfortunately another great artist we lost last year. Thanks so much for all the great music. American Girl & Stop draggin my heart around.
Good god, I love Tom Petty! Aaaaaggghhhhh!!! You’re face, Jamel, when he said “let’s roll another joint.”🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I think I’m gonna smoke one tonight for you!

I got to see Tom Petty live, when he was touring this(Wildflowers) album. I was 9, and loved his music for years already. And I still do! RIP Mr. Petty
Definitely one of my favourites - always loved this song. It was this video that finally persuaded me to buy my Firebird. To this day, I am still shocked and saddened that we lost Tom far far too early. RIP Tom.
Always a song that speaks to me, like so many Petty songs. Truly one of our greatest songwriters and musicians of his era. Mix in the brilliant Mike Campbell, Benmont and the rest of the Heartbreakers and you just have an amazing catalogue of music. Enjoy the ride.
Tom Petty and Paul Simon have kept me alive on long car trips where I'm driving through FM Hell and getting sleepy at the wheel. Having albums I know all the words to and can sing along really helps. I knew who he was before Middle School (mid-80s for me), but my first memory of him was on, "It's Garry Shandling's Show," a satirical "sitcom" on Showtime that had Garry breaking the fourth wall to talk to the audience. In one episode, they all went to Vegas, and on the trip back Garry is summing up the trip, and he mentions how everyone enjoyed themselves and how Tom even won an electric keyboard, and there's Tom in the back happy as he can be holding a keyboard. They were apparently very good friends.
You Got Lucky, American Girl, Here Comes My Girl, Refugee, Don't Do Me Like That, Breakdown, Don't Come Around Here No More, Free Fallin, Runnin Down A Dream

i"ll say it once and I'll say it again....TOM PETTY AND STEVIE NICKS...
"STOP DRAGGING MY HEART AROUND"...you will not be disapointed my friend.
And don't forget Insider!:)
On the Weird Al kick, Stop Dragging my Car Around
I remember watching this on MTV. They would censor the word "joint", so I always remember "Lemme get to the point, let's roll another "."
I still sing it like that!
Like people didn’t know what the word was! Lmao! Teenagers yet! Lol
I seem to remember that with MuchMusic in Canada, the hours of the day that they had to censor things, they had "tnioj" overdubbed on it instead of any sort of beep.
Refugee and Last Dance with Mary Jane are my favorite Tom Petty songs
Tom Petty "You got lucky"
Great 80's classic mtv video.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers are one of my favorite bands! Tom is a genius songwriter with a great sense of humor. You can't go wrong with any of his catalogue! He left this Earth way to soon! RIP Tom Petty
Tom has so many great songs, this doesn't even make my top 10. "American Girl" and "Don't come around here no more" are amazing. RIP legend. Thx Jamel
People come, people go. Some grow young, some grow cold. You don't know how it feels to be me... What a great effing line! T-shirt worthy! ✌
My all time favorite Tom Petty song! Thanks for doing the review bro!
Whether or not the events in the background literally were occurring to him or if they were just pure, random craziness I don't know, but the point still stands.
cynicalstream 42 great observation!
cynicalstream 42 I think I’m one of the elite, that watches the background more than anything, when I watch something.
Mr. Tom Petty,
Unfortunately another great artist we lost last year. Thanks
so much for all the great music.
American Girl & Stop draggin my heart around.
Long time comin! Hope everyone’s having a good Saturday.
Good god, I love Tom Petty! Aaaaaggghhhhh!!! You’re face, Jamel, when he said “let’s roll another joint.”🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I think I’m gonna smoke one tonight for you!
Here is a hint on the songs meaning: You don't know how it feels... to be me. Like I don't know hat it feels....to be you. This to me is the genius of this song.
"Free Fallin", "I Won't Back Down", and "Mary Janes Last Dance" r all Tom Petty classics
Oh yeah! More Tom Petty please!
and I miss Him........some amazing tunes, and touched a lot of folks in his life, just like a lot of folks touched Him...We will always have Tom Petty, he lives on
His song "Walls" is severely underrated. Tom Petty is part of the big three for sure (with Van Morrison and Neil Young).
Tom Petty's music IS America. I still believe he was a voice for our Country. America's Golden Boy He has so many amazing songs, you could react every day for months
Normally I come here for the metal, but this song is part of my soul, so I'm watching.
One of my all time favorite artists. American girl. Face in the crowd. Refugee. The apartment song. I've got you too save me. Endless masterpieces.
Tom Petty is so chill. I discovered him on pandora when I was like 15. Me and my friends would always smoke weed and listen to red hot chili peppers radio and this song always came on. Nothing like some TP!
He had such a kind soul and a real way with words. So many great songs, but Walls and It's Good To Be King are exceptional.
Can you do I Won't Back Down please?
Seconded!
Totally agree. That song has so much meaning behind it.
Vouch
The Waiting, Woman In Love, You Got Lucky, Even the Losers...he has so many great songs
“Even the losers” is a good one, especially for us losers... 😔😉
We do get lucky sometimes.....
Scott Ferrell keep a little bit of pride 👊🏻🍻
Scott Ferrell I can say from personal experience it is definitely a drag when you’re livin’ in the past. I guess that’s what beer is for.
Nick Colbert look to the future man. I was only joking about being a loser. No human being is a loser. There are people who are put in unfortunate circumstances but it just depends on how you deal with it. Keep smiling bro and God Bless! 🤛🏻
Scott Ferrell thanks man, and I was semi-joking as well. Just in a bad spot in life but I know it will get better. Really appreciate the sentiment man! 🍻🤘🏻✌🏼
I got to see Tom Petty live, when he was touring this(Wildflowers) album. I was 9, and loved his music for years already. And I still do! RIP Mr. Petty
Tom Petty is one of my FAVORITE artists of ALLL time!!
Runnin Down A Dream is my Favorite tune by him.
Hint Hint HINNNT!!!
"You got Lucky" is another iconic 80s video by the legendary Tom Petty
My favorite Tom Petty is the first one I heard: I Need To Know.
Tom Petty man! Singing, playing guitar & harmonica! I can't even do laundry & dishes at the same time! Respect.
American Girl, Listen to her heart, Refugee, Breakdown, The Waiting, Room at the Top
Definitely one of my favourites - always loved this song. It was this video that finally persuaded me to buy my Firebird. To this day, I am still shocked and saddened that we lost Tom far far too early. RIP Tom.
Jamel...please listen to It's Good to be King. 😁✌️
Oohhhh....you'll love Runnin down a Dream too!
Always a song that speaks to me, like so many Petty songs. Truly one of our greatest songwriters and musicians of his era. Mix in the brilliant Mike Campbell, Benmont and the rest of the Heartbreakers and you just have an amazing catalogue of music. Enjoy the ride.
RIP Tom Petty. You can now lead the angels in song. Thanks for the great music and being a huge sound track to my life!❤
Hard to believe how MTV would "bleep" out the words roll, and joint, when this song was first released.
The girl singing with Tom is Raven Snow.
Refugee
Breakdown
Running Down a Dream
Freefalling
Yes! All great songs!
RIP Tom
Love Tom Petty. Felt like I lost a childhood friend when he passed away. Saw him 4 times in concert. 2 other songs of his "Listen to Her Heart" and 'Woman in Love" . Videos for these 2 from The Old Grey Whistle Test back in the day.
The eagles “new kid in town” “I can’t tell you why” “one of these nights” amazing songs
I remember watching this when it first came out. Instantly hooked. Great song! Rest Easy Tom
"Let's get to the point, Let's roll another joint and head on down the road"
Awww miss him.... seeing him perform live was on my bucket list and I was so sad when he passed unexpectedly 🖤
