- So I am totally familiar with "Free Fallin'" as I've had some students sing it for me in the past, but I've never seen Tom Petty, or heard one of his live performances. So, there are SOME firsts here. I'm not only looking forward to seeing what Tom Petty looks and sounds like live, but also what your next recommended track by him will be!

Tom is American Rock and Roll royalty. For such a quiet, unassuming guy, his career was simply brilliant. Rest in peace, Muddy Wilbury.
One of the most amazing things about Tom Petty hit me when I saw him play live back in the late 90s. I sat there and heard one amazing song after another for over 2 hours straight when I realized that EVERY SINGLE SONG that he played that night was an actual hit single. The ability to play two and a half hours worth of your own songs, and every one of them be a Top 40 hit single is absolutely amazing.
Plus, there were still many more hit songs left over in his repertoire that he ran out of time to get to.
There is really only a small handful of artists who could do this. RIP to a true American great.
Elizabeth, you've GOT to do his early hit Refugee. His singing on that is just so fascinating, and it's an absolutely killer song.
Yeah, I think it was a risky but beautiful decision to treat the chorus as if he has suddenly receded and it's more at a distance, like he's just jumped out of an airplane while he's singing and he's beginning to free fall.
Or alternatively, his very first single Breakdown.
I suggest some of Tom's deeper tracks maybe some of his acoustic live versions like Walls. His cords are simple his story telling is incredible and his voice is awesome.

Breakdown is definitely one of the best by Petty
Tom Petty is simply one of the greatest American songwriters. Nobody else has ever sounded like him and the Heartbreakers.
Also, Tom Petty is from Gainesville Florida, since his death, every home game and the end of the quarter, the Florida Gators play his song, "I Won’t Back Down" and the whole stadium sings it, in his honor.
Tom used to clean the stadium seats. The gators and Tom go way way back

Full moon fever is an amazing album
His song "You Don't Know How It Feels" is one of the greatest rock songs ever written. It's an absolute must if you want to deep dive into Petty!
Girl on LSD is a great companion to it. First time I heard that was live at the old Boston Garden in 1995.
One of my favorites as well and not just favorite Tom Petty songs. Just songs period. No matter the genre.
Tom Petty is simply one of the best songwriters of the last 50 years. There is nothing quite like the Heartbreakers, and I don't think there will be anything quite like them again.

I am normally a metalhead, but I love Tom Petty. A lot of his best work has a twinge of sadness mixed in. Well, at least I think it does.

My older son at 2 yrs would ask me to put Tom Petty on my CD player. He knew every track and title. It blew peopIe's minds 😅 They would be like, "Did he just ask for Breakdown by Tom Petty ?" 🤣 It was normal for me, he was my first and he could carry on a fuII conversation at 2.
It's funny because we are die hard metal fans now and see shows together every summer.

"Don't Come Around Here No More" is one of his big hits, features some great backing vocals, and has a great music video. "Southern Accents" shows how much emotion Tom Petty can pull from a few simple lines.

Yes, yes, 1000 times yes! He sang it with Stevie Nicks in this very same concert and it is heavenly.
Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks singing the duet "Stop Draggin' my Heart Around" is really interesting, because they both have such unique vocal tones and singing styles, yet it works incredibly well. Recommend giving it a listen.
"Free Fallin'" is a great example of his voice. "Refugee" is another great example. I love watching you discover great artists.
I know Elizabeth wouId Iove WiIdflowers. Refugee, BreakDown are other good ones. I could name a dozen of them. Won't Back Down is another fave of mine and If I Was King. Love Tom Petty, one of the best ever in American music history.

My son at 2 would ask me "Mom, put Tom Petty on" when we were in the car. I would ask him which song and he knew them better than I did, he would say "play BIakedown, it's 02 on the disc" 😂 he couldn't pronounce his L's yet but he could carry on a conversation.
His music will aIways have a special place in my heart and my memories.

I can't be the only one who just loves to watch the pure enjoyment of hearing music spread across your face. It's like a child on Christmas morning seeing a decorated tree with tons of presents under it. We all should have something that brings us joy like music does to you. Keep it up.

Tom Petty was such an amazing talent. He said at one point that he has put out some bad songs but has never put on a bad show. Everything I've ever seen of him live attests to that.
For me, Running Down a Dream is at the front of his impressive catalog. Also the duet Stop Dragging My Heart Around with SN.

Running Down a Dream had heavy, heavy rotation on MTV for years. I think that was many people's introduction to TP.
Just saw Stevie Nicks with Billy Joel last weekend, Stevie and Billy sang together Stop Dragging my Heart Around, then she sang Free Falling and did such a beautiful tribute to him on the screens.

Tom Petty is one of my all time favorite singers and a national treasure . His voice and style is just so incredibly unique. His songs are beyond iconic and you just wanna sing/dance along with them. Free Fallin, American Girl, Mary Janes Last Dance, Running Down A Dream, Refugee, I Wont Back Down, Learning to Fly are just a taste of his genius! I wanted to see him sooo incredibly bad...I miss him soooo much!!! So glad youre diving into Tom Petty's music, Elizabeth!

An example of how awesome of a human being Tom Petty was. My best friend age 12 wrote him a fan letter in about 1991. He wrote back and sent merch. They ended up sending each other letters back and forth every couple of months for a few years. I love telling the story of us waiting for his hand written letters sent all the way to New Zealand.They were so engaging and he obviously cared so much for his fans
Yeah, there's an octavizer or harmonizer along with delay, gain or boost, or maybe a backing track. That's a badass note to hit in the studio, let alone live night after night. Like people are saying, his songwriting skills were exceptional, and the band complemented his voice while serving the song. Many of his songs are cultural staples in movies, radio, etc. Big love to this band for being part of the soundtrack of our lives in the late 70's, 80's, and 90's...
It almost sounds like he’s got the original recording of his voice from the studio version playing along with his live singing in order to boost it.
To me it just sounded like just old style live reverb with delay. But it also sounded like the sound mixer didn't get it quite right like they did for the studio version. But, as you said, it could be a harmonizer with delay. Either way, the sound person didn't get it right for this performance.

Tom Petty is a genius songwriter (he wrote this song with Jeff Lynne btw). He can take 3 chords and make it sound fresh over and over again. There are so many songs to choose from. Running Down a Dream is another song he did with Jeff Lynne.
I didn't know he wrote those with Jeff, but it makes sense now that I think about it. Is that who he started doing his solo stuff with? If so, I didn't realize that. But that reminds me, Elizabeth should totally look at Mr. Blue Sky by ELO. It would be a trip to watch her react to that!

Tom and the Heartbreakers had a career spanning over 40 years, continuously evolving. I feel like we grew up together - good times, bad times, divorce, and finding yourself again. Their concerts were a sing-along celebration!
Tom Petty could control a crowd like nobodies business. I saw him live numerous times and he just has you transfixed on everything he does. Lost Legend RIP Tom Petty
Tom Petty sings like he's playing a guitar solo, with lots of slides and bends to pitch, and using reverb, echoes, and delay effects. One of my favorites by the Heartbreakers is American Girl. The Midnight Special live performance is a great early performance, but the Live Aid concert, with his signature Rickenbacker, is also pretty amazing. Who am I kidding? Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are always amazing.
This is the best song for introducing Tom, but he's got SO many more amazing songs.
The duet with Stevie Nicks "Stop dragging my heart around", "Last dance with Mary Jane", "I won't back down", the songs with the Traveling Wilbury's "End of the Line" and "Handle with care" - all so good and the Wilbury's open up a fresh universe of new superstars for you and the already for you well know Jeff Lynne

Couple times he played for the home crowd here in Gainesville I think Nicks showed up for the duet. Tom and Stevie sound SO good together.

Has the Charismatic Voice started to use more live tracks ?...As a performance vocalist perhaps it's of more interest to her that way ...but you're right about the crowd belting it out .
I was a little disappointed with this one because I don't think it's a good example of Tom's voice ... he's getting on in that clip...his voice is too .
Tom Petty is one of those guys who projects this slacker kind of persona that makes his music really easy to listen to. Very chill. Never labored sounding at all. Of course that’s an illusion because he’s such a perfectionist IMO. The only way to make it look or feel easy is to work very hard behind the scenes on your craft. He cares very much about every detail. I got to see him live several years ago and it was the best concert I think I’ve ever been to. That surprised me because often the best studio artists are kind of boring live. The mastery of subtly needed to make a great record often gets lost in a live performance. He was awesome. RIP
Tom Perry’s greatest hits serve as a critical component of America’s sound track. He has the song writing prowess of Bob Dylan mixed with Bruce Springsteen’s rock-star ethos. Just an overall incredible musician, and I am blessed to have had my mom introduce him to me at a young age.
Tom Petty had one of the most unique voices, you will never confuse his voice with someone else's after you hear it.
Yeah for me, petty and Phil collins are perhaps the two most instantly recognizable voices I can think of
My favorite part about the bridge - you mentioned the bass dropping out, and it makes you feel like you're falling, there's nothing under you. It's so well done for such a "simple" song. I've loved this song since I was a kid, Tom Petty is one of the greats.

I *love* Tom Petty so much. His songwriting is so beautiful and strikes to the truth of things. It feels distinctly like a summer roadtrip across the American south, lazy afternoons, wide open spaces, sultry nights, blaring the radio and driving too fast. And you said what I’ve always felt that his voice is soothing.
Oh, and I recommend “Here Comes My Girl”, “Breakdown”, “You Got Lucky”, “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”. He also has a fantastic duet with Stevie Nicks, “Stop Draggin my Heart Around.”
I obviously didn't know Tom, but I've spent so much time with him and his music, that he felt like an old friend. One of the greatest songwriters of all time, who was totally taken for granted. I have a hard time picking a favorite artist, but there aren't many I would put in front of Thomas Earl Petty. I still miss him.
Tom was one of the best songwriters of his time. The stories, musicality, all of it was good. And some may say his voice wasn't great, but he was rock and roll and attitude in so many of his songs. Touched so many notes. The entire Wildflowers album is a must-listen, but you can also just oush play on Full Moon Fever and Damn The Torpedoes. Wonderfully written music. The guy geeked out about music and the way it touches people. A treasure lost, for sure.

I was a small child when a lot of Tom Petty's best-known songs came out, and I was just starting high school when "Full Moon Fever", the album containing "Free Fallin' "was released. Tom Petty's music was always on in the background of my daily life, so much so that I cried like a baby the day he suffered his heart attack that took his life about a day later. Three years before his passing, I did a karaoke night at a bar with my friends, for my big 4-0. I sang "I won't Back Down" at some point, and one of my friends said, "You know, you should ALWAYS sing Tom Petty; It's like you two are kindred spirits, or something". So very true. When we lost Tom, it felt like I lost an uncle, only a really cool uncle, who had a way with a guitar and could tell a helluva a story in song.
He's got a very southern in accent, it comes out in his scoopy singing and makes up his unique style. TP is an American treasure.
I absolutely admired Tom for his work ,he gave such a great concert ,he loved feeding off the crowd and getting them involved, he was probably the last true rock n roller and the Heartbreakers always had such a signature sound that made you say to yourself, " that works but how did they arrive at these wonderful sounds ?"
My hearts still breaks missing this man. The album "Widlflowers" has been a favorite for road travelling for my wife and me for years.
The last thing I ever did with my Father was to take him to the Tom Petty Concert in July of 2005. My father passed away from an accident that occurred on Labor day that year.
It was a really bad day and my Father talked down to me the entire time we were there. Even though he did that, I tried to keep a happy mood and enjoy my time there. I was the one that bought nice tickets at the Blossom Pavilion in Ohio.
Hearing this brought out a flood of emotions that I have tried hiding and I can't help but cry. After Mr Petty passed away, I haven't listened to him because it hurts inside.
It was an amazing Concert regardless of the negative events happening in my life at that time.
Thank you Mr Petty for the only good Memory I have of being around my Father. Rest in Peace good Sir.
RIP Tom Petty. The wife and I were fortunate enough to see him the weekend he passed away. My wife saw him twice and the last time was his last performance. He and the Heartbreakers were true legends.

It's so interesting to me when someone doesn't know what Tom Petty looks like, because, when I was growing up, his 'Don't Come Around Here No More' video was on the tv all the time. It's such an iconic music video from the days of early MTV. 🎩😆
Put such a happy smile on my face to see a Tom Petty reaction! “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” and “You Don’t Know How It Feels” - if either of these two songs come on everything stops for me. Maybe I’m just a sucker for harmonica, which to me is the perfect accompaniment for his voice. I remember exactly where I was when I heard he died, same for Johnny Cash, Chester Bennington, Dolores O’Riordan, Chris Cornell, and Kurt Cobain.
I'm with you on those. I have long said that "Mary Jane's Last Dance" is the story of my life, as I actually really did grow "up in an Indiana town with a good lookin' mama, that never was around..." and all the rest of the lyrics kinda fit too, quite literally. I'm so, so glad that I was able to see him perform live before we lost him (although my "bucket list" dream to someday find a way to actually meet and sing *with* him...that died then too 😢).
I had the honor of seeing this man, and his wonderful band perform 5 times. The first time, the more the crowd cheered, the more he played. He literally played until the venue turn off the power on him. Tom Petty lived for his fans, and he appreciated each and every one of us. Before you dive into any more of his music, take 3 hours, and watch the Tom Petty complete history that you can find on here. It’s very informative, and will give you a real feel of the man he was, and why he did all that he did. There will never be another artist like him, and we were blessed to have him for as long as we did.
I love Tom's harder rocking songs like Refugee and Breakdown - they're edgy and moody at the same time.
How about Traveling Wilburys?
So I gravitate to rock and metal and have seen a lot of my all time faves live like Rammstein, Metallica, Foo etc and I also have seen Tom Petty live and I have to say- he was absolutely the best show I've ever been to hands down and that still amazes me. I remember it so well, everyone was pumped up for a rock show and the opener was good though I sadly don't recall who it was when I went in the mid 2000s or so. When Petty took the stage, the anticipation and energy was higher than he was putting out and he cooled it down but brought it back in his own mellow, positive and feel good energy and maintained it for the entire show. Its a high energy vibe of a type I've never experienced at a live event before. You just felt good, enjoyed your fellow humans as your own brothers and sisters like no other and just celebrated the experiences of life with his masterful songwriting and storytelling lyrics. There was nobody like him and I've long felt he deserved more than he got but he also seemed more than happy to just deliver the most feel good concert experience of my life. How he had such a presence by doing so little was even touched on by Elizabeth and I can tell you it was no different then, but mark my words he commanded the arena but it was gentle and kind. And it didn't hurt he played my favorite song, Saving Grace, for 18 minutes straight- he and the band broke it down into a jam session with a story midway through while keeping the feel of the song and then came back to send it off with aplomb at probably the 16 minute mark. Absolutely tremendous and I'll never forget it. Thank you Tom. RIP.

If you're going to do another Tom Petty analysis, my choice would be American Girl. But he honestly had a pretty large catalog of popular songs.
If she's ever seen "Silence of the Lambs", she's heard at least *part* of "American Girl". ;)
Tom Petty is a true story teller. His lyrics, like Neil Young's, set him apart. Mix those stories with simple beautiful melodies and you have an American classic. I hope you get to hear a variety of his music. It's vey different from album to album but is consistent in its beauty and emotion, even when he's totally rocking out.
I’ve loved Tom Petty since 1980 in college. A very distinctive voice and tons of great songs over a 40 year career.
Intereting tidbit: This song is off the album Full Moon Fever. Tom said he wrote all the songs on that album while he was driving around LA. Put the album on next time you need to take a long drive, and you'll see that it's one of the best driving albums ever made.
Umm, any album without "I Can't Drive 55" isnt a driving album.
But if you're not careful, Runnin' Down a Dream may lead to a speeding ticket.
Please more Tom Petty! I am certain you will find "imperfections" here and there; and he often joked about his own vocals. But in my opinion, Tom Petty was one of the very best lyricists and storytellers of all time. For me, it is hard to remember any road trip I've ever been on where his music was not prominently featured. You know you have your thumb on the pulse of America when almost everything you write becomes an instant classic. Fans like me miss him terribly, and his music always puts a smile on my face. What a talent!
I knew at some point in the past I read an article where he admitted he really didn't love his voice or even like it most times. He thought it was too twangy.
I've enjoyed your deep dives into 90s rocks bands, including Pearl Jam, Nirvana, STP, Soudgarden and even Tool. But Tom Petty is an absolute legend. I will never not click on a link with him in the title. So smooth and soothing, and a master songwriter.
Tom Petty had so many great songs that it's hard to choose just one. A couple of my personal favorites are "Last Dance With Mary Jane" and his duet with Stevie Nicks, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around."
Last month I managed to finally see Stevie Nicks perform live (as I'd dreamed of doing since 1977), and not only did she perform that song, with all kinds of pictures of Tom on the big screens behind the stage, near the end of her show she actually performed "Freefallin'", with more gigantic pictures of Tom, in a sort of tribute all through the song. It was really fabulous. I did shoot video of that performance that I shared on Facebook. I should see if I can upload it to UA-cam. 😉

I never listened to Tom Petty intensively but whenever his songs came on the radio I'd feel happy. It felt like a friend was singing to me. I enjoy their music videos too because his sense of humor comes through. Also may I say there is nothing like listening to "Mary Jane's Last Dance" at a party in Indiana. Every person immediately shouting along from the first lyric, "She grew up in an Indiana town/Had a good lookin' mama who never was around/But she grew up tall and she grew up right/With them Indiana boys on an Indiana night..."
Tom was a slice of Americana - just pure, simple rock-n-roll. He wove delightful stories that reflected specific times & places. I've always included this in my playlist of songs about L.A. as it mentions specific locations in & around the Valley, where I grew up - listening to Tom along the way. I miss him being in the world, telling his stories. We lost him too soon...
I only watched the music video for Free Fallin' recently, and it's such a cool time capsule of that time in L.A. I also just love watching Tom Petty singing on an escalator in a mall.
Love Tom Petty! Great storyteller with a relatable style. His Highway Companion album resonates deeply with me and sounds very personal. It's in my regular rotation.

I always thought of Tom as having 2 (at least) voices. The regular, soft voice that had like a "quiver" in it when he sang the verses. Then, just when you think he doesn't have much power or range - BAM!! He hit's you with the power and range during the chorus!
Tom Petty is one of my all time favourites. if you want to dive deeper, I recommend check out his official MVs of "into the great white open" with a young johnny depp, "don´t come around here anymore", "learning to fly" and the fantastic "mary jane´s last dance" all MV are awesome too.

And the icing on the cake is your fun, playful demeanor, which never fails to make me smile.
I've gotten a lot more into Tom Petty in the years since I moved to Gainesville. I love vocalists who are instantly identifiable and quirky, that stand out from the crowd. Petty had that up one side and down the other.
I'm pretty sure in the chorus of this live performance they are playing back the vocals from the studio track, stuck a delay on them as you pointed out and have them mixed waaay louder than his live vocals (or even cut his live vocals completely). I love Tom Petty and I'm sure this wasn't his choice but I know that studio vocal so well and that is 100% it.

I' m a huge Tom Petty fan even though I must admit that the album version sounds a bit too much of a pop song, but live performances always give me instant goosebumps, these beautifully ringing guitar chords and his well-aged voice in the intro hit really hard emotionally.
This song IS the essence of (the best of) America to me - and that's from a UK woman! A tear is rolling down my cheeks now (not the slightest exaggeration). I ❤this song so much (and all of Tom's music to be honest). Awesome.

Actually I love this song, and it was Jeff Lynne's (ELO) input into helping Tom get the chorus lyrics right .. by holding the long Free .... and then the free falling part... (I believe at the time Tom was 'stuck' on this part)
Jeff Lynne also believed that Petty’s voice deserved to be up front in the mix as compared to some of his previous recordings. Just a great partnership.
I love this channel so much, she always says things that make something in my head click. Like ive always loved songing along to TP, but i always figured it was just bc hes easy to sound like, but there's always the extra joy of the way he sings. The whole singable constanents and singing up to the note...that is exactly why I just never knew it.
The genuine joy in your eyes and the honesty of feeling is why we all come back to watch these videos you put out. Petty loved the Rickenbacker and it add so much to the music. Enjoy the video and keep doing what your doing. We all love it!
You should follow up this one with The Traveling Wilburys. Tom Petty, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and a guy whose name won’t come to me right now made up the group. It’s hard watching sometimes knowing how many are dead but their music is, as you might can guess, unique and wonderful.

The box set taken from the Fillmore West residency is the most pleasurable listening experience you’ll ever treat yourself to. Most are covers of the music that inspired he and the band in the beginning. The deepest respect for their idols and mentors is fully on display. Joyous in every way!!
I feel like you only really experienced half of Tom Petty here. He can also have a much sharper (not pitch) sound in his higher register. It was present in this song but the reverb on it was making it hard for you to hear. I'd recommend Breakdown to hear both together.

One of my all time favorite singers, I used to watch and listen to him in the early 80s and basically since I have memory, not even becoming a metal head could take away how much I love his music and it is nice to see him on this channel. Thanks for sharing.
Strange Behavior Tour September 13, 1989 Dean Smith Center, Chapel Hill, NC 👈 I was at that concert, back when I was only 22 years old. It was the best concert I've ever been to as far as Tom's connectivity with his audience. Loved it and so thankful I was able to see him perform live!

Someone with a very similar vocal style to Tom Petty that you might want to check out is Roger McGuinn. He was vocalist/guitarist with The Byrds. They had a lot of hits in the 60's, including "Turn, Turn, Turn" and "Mr. Tambourine Man." He actually covered Tom Petty's "American Girl" because their voices sounded so much alike.
Keep in mind, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tracked live in the studio. I think he said they played "Refugee" over 70 times until they got it just right. Those early albums are basically live recordings in a studio (The mighty Sound City in this case).

I took a friend to see Tom once. After the show, he could not believe how many songs by Tom he knew by heart. There's a good 15+ songs that everyone knows and loves.
I saw Tom Petty live twice. Once in the 80s and again in the 90s. Loved the man and his music. An American great.
It's absolutely the uniqueness that makes his voice and his music so appealing to me. I actually loved his music on the radio, long before I had a clue of who he or the Heartbreakers were. It was a similar experience for me to finally see and learn who he was several years after first hearing and enjoying him. Truly a classic rock 'n roller putting his own stamp on the genres. Thanks for giving this a try.
We love him forever. He`s magic in the verses is a storytelling folk trick halfway talking, halfway singing. Producer Jeff Lynn sugested him to go an octave higher in the chorus and it certainly picks your attention. Genius work.
