Chloe got me into exercising and I will forever be thankful to her for that but I am glad I quickly moved on to Sydney Cummings. I remember when people critized Chloe for not being educated/certified in fitness/exercise science - and her response was that she has a degree in finance and, therefore, is educated - completely missing point or dodging the real criticism. That was one of the things that made me stop doing her workouts which I actually really enjoyed.

Same! I started my weight loss and workout journey with Chloe Ting's videos on her website during peak lockdown. back then , i didn't know anything about the fitness side of YT and that she was not certified in fitness. I am still thankful to her because I ended up losing weight and haven't stopped working out since then. I have also moved on Sydney Cummings, thanks to Justina's review on her workouts!

The whole "women have to support other women!" argument really gets me so riled up... like women can also uphold patriarchy! Women are not immune from doing shitty things! It's like that Eric Andre episode where he asked Mel B if Margret Thatcher used girl power by funneling money to paramilitary death squads in Northern Ireland. People are not immune to criticism just because they happen to belong to a marginalized group! End of rant lol

the thing about people saying"chloe causes eds" is that although its not technically true, the onus is not on her, she is definitely someone who markets her work toward people with eds. its not about gaining strengh or mobility or endurance, her workouts are explicitly marketed to change what you look like, quickly. you cant be surprised then that people with eds would seek her out in that case, or really resent them for associating her with it when they start the recovery process

I think this lack of acknowledging professional criticism is something that bugs me most about Chloe and Blogilates - yes, you don't need to engage with haters, but learning from other professionals and people's experiences is always something you should consider to do your work better and release better content. Nobody does everything right and there is always something to improve on. But no, it has to be "Abs in 2 weeks" workouts or "sculpting protein bars".

as someone who once did chloe ting workouts out, her video was very frustating to me to watch. i feel like she's playing dumb to deflect. There's no way she can't be aware with her clickbait video titles that shes targeting a certain type of audience and captialisinig of the insecurities of ill informed teenage girls and young women. She knew what that girl meant when she said hourglass workout, she's just strawmaning. And to suggest that no women should ever be able to citicise another women ever is just ridiculous. you need to give better reasons why you should not be criticised for what is harmful content. Pulling out the girls supports girls card when you're profiting of the unrealistic female beauty standards the partiarchy created is espiecally wild.

  • @elenakalliste

Maybe she really does just lack self awareness. It seems like her attitude is very much of the “girl boss” type of mentality, which we all know is very toxic and doesn’t actually help women in any way. Hopefully she’ll do better in the future. But probably not. 😕

@@levl0p285 Bro are you secretly Chloe writing this? If you watch the entire video Justina agreed that some of the criticism Chloe gets is unreasonable e.g. blaming her for giving people EDs, and she's also pointing out that Chloe's disclaimers are not enough to undo the misleading clickbait titles. If it worked for you great, but it may not for others and it's scummy of her to make promises that she can't deliver (e.g. abs in 2 weeks) at the expense of her followers' mental health and body image just so she can get more engagement.
This is not pointless hate, it's valid criticism, and she needs to listen and learn. In fact you're the one hating and calling everyone who criticises Chloe lazy while Justina is literally a certified fitness coach! Tell me how is she lazy?
Misleading clickbait is just not cool anymore, and many creators e.g. Caroline Girvan, Sydney Cummings etc. don't do this and they still have large followings from the quality of their workouts.

"Hourglass in 2 weeks" is a very VERY unrealistic goal and would be false advertising but her 2 week ab workout ACTUALLY gives you abs in two weeks so there is no false information and THAT makes the difference. (i did it myself.)
You make her out to be someone who clickbaits but she is not lying and MILLIONS of people that do her workouts are the confirmation of that.
There will allways be people that complain and blame people "above" them for their failure and the more well known you are the more you become the target of those people.
You need to keep in mind that cloe ting is one of the biggest if not the biggest female workout youtuber on this plattform.

I think her (and other creators too) should evaluate why people with existing ED tendencies or on the slippery path to a bigger heath issue turn to her. Those two things are not random and probably there's a connection that someone should study deeply. The youtube space is so big that you get what you're looking for, and peobably if you have a body dismorphia or insecurity, you'll look up what can help you to change that. So, if people is attaching her name to their tricky relationship with their bodies and food, she at least should do an overview of the content she is putting out in the world.
As you say, there's other great creators who's no equipment homeworkouts are amazing, like some pilates instructors, madfit or Heather even has some.

i think chloe is totally within her rights to say that people can have a really disingenuous way of delivering constructive criticism (tiktok is especially bad for this because of its short form content -content that is quippy and fits into a recognizable meme format will necessarily perform better than a 5 part, sit down mini essay), it's also, like, blatantly misrepresenting why the creator captioned their video the way that they did. chloe pointedly cuts off the second half of the sentence which references her use of clickbait time frames (abs in 2 weeks, hourglass in 5 weeks, etc.) it's not a video that i'd make personally specifically because i would be worried about it getting back to the original creator, but the caveat was meant to distinguish between chloe ting as a person and the content she was making - they were clarifying that they don't hate hate chloe but have (valid) criticisms of the content.
marketing your content using potentially harmful means is the harder to defend premise in the statement though so 🤷🏻
i also don't want to dictate how personally someone should take comments made about them - on the internet, no less - but it does feel equally disingenuous to frame all of the criticism she receives as if it's "hating" or bullying when it is almost all explicitly about choices she is actively making. to pretend that her content just like, comes into being looking the way that it does without any input from her on substance, title or thumbnail feels a bit childish to me. simultaneously playing the "people underestimate my expertise because of their own biases" card and the "i'm just trying my best 🥺" card just doesn't sit right with me. either you need to be held to a higher standard than most because you are presenting yourself as a guide for people to follow or you shouldn't be representing yourself as an authority on the subject, but you really can't pick both.

gd I dunno. There's Chloe Ting the private person, and there's Chloe Ting the content (creator) and those are different things, and the entire haters response video is her acting as if those are one and the same, and specifically they are the private person Chloe Ting.
It's very... she's taking criticisms of the actions taken by the business she's built up around her and going 'how dare you say that to me, you don't even know me' but no one is saying anything about her - in fact most people are beyond gracious in going 'chloe the private person is presumably a wonderful human being' before then going 'chloe, the persona that is the face of this business had done some shady shit', that's not about pretending to be an angel and refusing to be a hater to be a hater or whatever. It's explicating the difference between the two.

This was a very kind and reasonable critique… but Chloe actually does seem toxic and her response to criticisms makes it seem more so. At best, she seems wilfully, harmfully ignorant. And she’s definitely not the only one. I also don’t think she’s popular because she makes valuable, quality content. I think she makes content that preys on and feeds into people’s insecurities but it hides behind a positive “encouraging” veneer so it can get a pass for “at least getting people moving!” But it’s doing that through feeding insecurities as opposed to all the other creators that focus on less problematic things. I get the “meet people where they are” argument -and agree with it - but I see no evidence of her combatting that heavily problematic things she’s leading with or trying to help people past the self-harmful thinking she’s meeting them at, if you get me?

I was doing my make-up and had to stop halfway because I got really angry. I don’t like her content but hey, I am just not her target audience. Sadly This video is making me lose any respect I had for her. It’s manipulative to use female support point to paint this “them” vs “us” narrative to her supporters. This does nothing but to alienate them further. Can’t deny that she did get a lot of people moving during covid, but I think it’s needs to be studied if she is doing more harm than good. And thank you for being so respectful in the video. 😊

You know two fitness personalities that actually acknowledge and always have acknowledged their previously problematic clickbait contents? Daniel and Kelli from Fitness Blender! Back in, like, 2015, they used to have workout titles like "get legs like Carry Underwood" or "something something hourglass shape" (in which you had to manipulate small water bottles to...wait for it... grow boobs!). Although, much like Chloe, you could check the description box and read that spot reduction is a myth, at some point they completely stopped doing clickbaits and acknowledged that it was a terrible idea in the first place, even though it helped them with the algorithm and everything for sure! I know that you made a very positive review about their content a few years ago... I wonder if you know that recently (an year and a half, maybe?) they have grown immensely and now they have physiotherapists, certified personal trainers, a psychologist and other highly specialized professionals actively working with them? It's so impressive! It's a little cringe to say it like that, but I feel so proud of their growth! Yeah, long story short, Fitness Blender, Renaissance Periodization and you, Justina, are the ONLY fitness professionals that I trust and respect. Thank you for the great contents you constantly put out! AND BYE KEVIN! : )

Watching this made me realise how misleading and click baiting her content was and is so I’m glad you made this video. It is also my first time watching your video and it was filled with information that I learned.
The fact she is not able to take accountability is really disheartening- I hope she would address this and sees your video and realise the issues of her content.

I really am at the place now where I believe you should have to present any platform with your certifications and qualifications as well as a background check before posting health (mental or physical) content. I know it's a little extreme, but then I believe this type of thing will be minimized.. we see where we are without that type of regulation. The Eugenia Cooneys, Amberlynn Reids, and Chloe Tings of the this platform need to be banned. I actually don't hate Chloe, I see so much potential in her and I like that all her content is free to access (I also like her spunky attitude, but I wish she'd use it in a positive way instead of just deflecting) I just think she needs to (1) take accountability, as you said very beautifully, (2) go get an actual real, respectable degree in her craft, (3) make the appropriate changes. This is a very nuanced discussion for me because I actually had my ED fueled when I was younger by Blogilates (she did not cause it, she just made content that attracted my vulnerable and young self who already had disordered thoughts and fueled the fire, much as Chloe is doing these days for the younger generation, so I understand), but finding Chloe Ting actually started the catalyst towards me not wanting to be malnourished and actually being able to do HIIT/light resistance instead of being so weak the only exercise I could do was mainly laying on the floor and lifting my leg and crunching my neck, thus helping me eat more to sustain such movement, which probably ended up saving my life indirectly as a result. One could view it as maybe going from one problematic creator to another, and I acknowledge that, but I do thank Chloe in a way for making content that changed my mindset and eventually led to me recovering from an ED with the help of a healthcare team. And I know my experience is not universal -- Chloe is a lot of people's Blogilates, which is very unfortunate. As I've recovered and become slightly more educated, I can see how Chloe really does symbolize a lot that's wrong with this platform and the health/fitness space in general and I really do feel like it's such a shame. Again, I really think she has tons of potential, but unfortunately here we are. Well said as always, Justina.

Because everything I've seen from her has been workout content, and yeah, you can't spot reduce fat, but also "here's an ab routine" is nowhere in the ballpark of "you shouldn't eat food," and I understand why she feels that it's unfair to blame her for that.
