Basically a lifelong FL user here. In since ver 3. Contrary to what most people think, and quite ironically, FL's "problem" is not that it's too limitied, but rather how unlimited it is. You really have to work to develop your work flow because FL will certainly not.
You're not wrong. I felt just as anxious watching this video as I felt excited and inspired, and I have a pretty good working knowledge of After Effects.
Yeah as an ableton user I totally feel this. I never really got into fl studio but by seeing this stuff I realize how powerfull it is and how easy it CAN be. But before you are at a place where the daw is as easy to use as suggested in the video you have to spend 10x more hours on learning the software than on most other popular daws. Everything is in submenu's and under shortkeys or under deep window diving. Which just isn't easy to get in to at all. In ableton it is the opposite, it maybe is more work to get something done, but it is so easy to see what is going on you don't need to understand every single feature to reach your goals.
@@AnoshterHaar yeah I'm demoing Cubase now after using reaper for years. Same problem there, reaper added so many features under the hood but if you download and install it today it has the same layout it did in version 3. In order to use all the powerful features you have to set up all the keys and toolbar buttons yourself. It's such a massive energy drain after a while. And good luck remembering all that. After years of using reaper I have no idea how to time warp something, but in Cubase I already figured it out because it's all on the sidebar after you click on the audio event. What a concept!
@@cl9826 yeah and I want to mention that it works different for everyone ofcourse. But I think in this age of software development it always is about finding a balance between features and ease of use. And everyone has its preferences ;) We can be happy as music professionals/hobbyists that there is at least a forest of very competent daw's to choose from. In regard to video and photo editting the scala of software is way more limited and you often do not have many choices... So at least there is competition going on between daw's, which will push the development of all daw's much more forward than without it!
Not sure i agree with yo at all on this point. Been using FL since version 3 myself.. and the improved workflow compared to other DAWS is exactly why i have kept using FL studio.. just the configurability alone on the FX chains alone is elite., which wasn’t even mentioned.
In the plugin Grossbeat, at one point years ago they made a change in how the "click reduction" works, which had the unfortunate consequence of changing how one of my projects sounded for the worse. I put a post on the tech support forum about it, and the creator of the plugin, and FL Studio on the whole ("Gol"), replied to me and said he added an option to change the click reduction to the old version or the new version (or turn it off) depending on which better suits your material, for the next software patch to be released. You can still see the option there to this day. If any company actually listens to their customers, this one does.
Regarding slide: If you use different colors on the notes in a chord (say green = C, blue = E, pink = G), you can slide specific notes (colors) as well: If you for example add a blue slide note, only the blue notes in the chord are affected.

I just bought FL, after having been an Ableton user for years. The piano roll is what sold it to me, but after seeing this video - it turns out I had no idea what it was capable of 😂

FL Studio is a killer daw. If you get used to, i'ts a blank canvas to do what you want, where you want and when you want... all this in 2 or 3 distinct ways. It's amazing! I use FL since 2001 and i love it.
Used to work with FL studio, but still can not comprehend how this general workflow with channel rack, arrangement and mixer being separate from one another can be intuitive and inspiring for someone. Not to mention this endless drop-down menus. Seems like to big of a price for a nice pianoroll.
FL now has "Track Mode"; you can drag and drop vsts and samples directly into the playlist and it will automatically link it to a mixer channel and the channel rack, you don't even need to look at the channel rack anymore if you don't want. The manual says this "simulates traditional sequencer workflow." =)
I like them being separate so that I can assign where each channel goes based on how I want it. Sometimes I want multiple channels going to one midi channel, while others i want certain channels going into one mixer insert or straight to the master. I like the pattern-based arrangement to keep track of my ideas and quickly duplicate and transform my previous compositions. It’s makes the workspace very flexible. Although you can essentially do the same thing in other DAW’s it seems more like a workaround than a tool to help its users, but that’s just me. also, every drop-down menu has an assigned hot-hey to select your desired option, intuitively marked by a letter of the option’s name (most options at least).
I love FL Studio for all the reasons you mentioned and more! Regarding the pricing: You can always upgrade your FL Studio versions or buy single plugins and your price always gets reduced by what you already have! I started with the producer edition, but bought one or two plugins for Black Friday since the jump to All Plugins was too big for me. Then when I bought All Plugins on a discount, it reduced the price even further bc I already had producer edition and the plugins! I think it's fantastic that you can upgrade at your own pace and financial ability! That said there are still a few things I wish they would add. One is having the granulizer work in Patcher. That would open up a huge amount of custom plugin possibilities. The other is having a control output for Patcher. Sometimes I patch together several Formulas and XY Controllers and Peak Controllers and wish I could just package them together and reuse in Patcher.

because of your videos I started using FL as a primary DAW to start all the ideas and tracks: Piano roll is blessed there, Patcher is the best in the wold thing and Edison is awesome thing to use. Thank you for your videos!
I know we all like to parade the strengths of FL. The piano roll makes it super easy to get ideas out of your head and into midi, and the envelope/peak controls are awesome. The truth is, that we finally get an envelope and crossfading tool for audio in 21, and that might be my favorite new thing, which is a glaring hole that it has had in it as a daw for a long time.
I think you should just open up the FL studio manual and go to a section (for example, if ur making a song and using the piano roll - open up the piano roll section) and go through everything and see what you can apply. That’s how I learned to make best use of this software and I just started this past summer without paying or relying on others to teach me through videos or courses. It’s really not that difficult. Ultimately you’re going to end up putting in the same amount of time learning or teaching yourself.
It was already there all the time: On every clip in the playlist you can click its little Menu -> Automate -> Volume But with Version 21 they make it *_even easier._* Viva la quality of life!
@@TheBigLou13 You are correct. I am all about that life. I am just looking forward to having other parts of the program, like clips and audio, as refined as the piano roll, and there are other programs that put it right in front of you which makes this group of people that rewire or stem to get into another program. We are getting there, and the performance has stayed pretty great considering how full featured the program is. Streamlining that crossfading helps a lot of people that work with break beats or single hits in the lane and i think it really enhances the mixer routing and and workflow by keeping edison/sf out of the equation in certain moments. pitch and time/groove correction is good with a few, more robust enhancements and refinements to the tools, they have made a pretty decent tracking environment.
Can someone tell me why it took them so long to incorporate manual fade ins and fade outs? It seems like such an obvious thing that every daw needs. Im glad they finally did it
Long time FL user here, and this is the only time on UA-cam, outside of SeamlessR, that Ive seen the more advanced functions of the program on display. I really hope you continue to do deeper dives for us on FL Studio.
Hey Benn, can we get this as a 12 volume audiobook series? I use FL Studio and I'm not taking advantage of pretty much anything you've described in this video. These are exactly the kinds of tips I need to help transition from someone who can make music into someone who does make music. Now excuse me while I put this video on loop while I sleep to hypnotize myself into being a better FL user.
Fwiw Benn, in the few videos you've done on FL Studio I've learnt far more about the DAW than I have in years of fiddling with it and watching other people's tutorials. I would absolutely pay the bucks for your take on FL how-to. Please do.
I've been using it since it was called Fruity Loops. Nowadays i prefer the less featured, open source fork LMMS, because my creativity is born from limitation.

FL Studio has always been a curiosity for me. I'm a Live user and a Reason user before that. I also mix in ProTools. But FL Studio...it doesn't get the love it deserves unless you KNOW how damn good it is. If there had been a Mac version years ago, I probably would have picked it over Live. Ableton hasn't done much to Live since V11, while Image Line just constantly innovates, improves, updates, and adds new stuff. Now that there is a Mac versions, I should check it out next year. At least try to make one track in it, just to see how I like it compared to Live.

You named some of the biggest reasons why I LOVE FL Studio: the piano roll is OP, fruity peak controller is OP, linking everything to anything else just blows my mind. I'm working on a project where the mixer is only treated as send tracks, have every instrument channel be a patcher channel & just automate the mixer track insert numbers, just because you can in FL! Oh yea, the last reason is, they really listen to their users! I borderlined complained about a few missing features in FL Studio Mobile, & they actually implemented a simple, but powerful feature that I've never seen in any other mobile daw. Thank you Image Line!
Been producing on FL studio for about 4-5 years now, still feel like a noob, learned so much about the interconnectivity of the software, put some of those peak compression tips to use and was blown away. If I could somewhat selfishly request a video on other tips and tricks you believe everyone should know about FL studio, it would be deeply appreciated.
The flexibility that FL offers is way too good. It allows me to get deep into the creative process without having to worry about making sure my midi tracks are on the correct channel, but when I need to link mixer tracks to playlist tracks, I can do so with relative ease. I recently recorded a multi track from a live set with FL, and I was impressed with it's capabilities. Considering we're learning Pro Tools in my degree program, it's gonna have to do a lot of convincing to get me to use Pro Tools more than FL.
Live is perfect for mixing in a classic way and performing live, but the piano roll in FL... gosh, that's how I was introduced to songwriting! 12/10 Sometimes i just deeply regret that at some time i was blown away by Ableton's GUI and didn't appreciate the idea of pure freedom in FL. Thanks to your video I'm planning to return to my beloved FL at least once in in a week for some inspiration, and continuing to work in Live as my main DAW. After all those years, FL.. It's grown up a bit, I see. And there's no point in fighting for any DAW on the market, you can use all of them, if your bank account will allow that.
OMG - I have been studying Fl studio for 2 years now and I still didn't know that you can edit any parameter in the piano roll. I keep on finding new things, its like an endless learning curve for me. Thank you so much, this was super helpful. I am now having fun creating multi delay effects in the piano roll!
My budget hasn't been able to keep up with Ableton upgrades and I've been looking for other alternatives. This makes FL Studio look REALLY tempting, even with Push currently as my primary interface with my DAW.
I paid for all upgrades of Live since version 8 and while there are some things i really like about V11, there are also things i dislike, for instance how they changed the audio and midi clip menu. the new layout is still confusing to me. Also it seems that V11 is much more of a CPU hog than V10. I run one modern plugin in Live and it takes 40 to 60% of the CPU while it takes a bit less in FL and a lot less in Reaper. I recently bought FL Studio and i highly recommend it! It's given a fresh perspective on producing after more than a decade in Live. and this one won't cost me thousands to update with seemingly significantly better updates!
Ngl I make full songs on the fl studio demo lol... I keep the session up or just finish each song I start... Albums almost done because I'm forced to finish songs
One of my favorite things... That I can't wrap my mind around how amazing it is... Is that I can create a very cool riff in piano roll, and put it in the playlist, and then render THAT into an individual audio sample, that I can then tweak and fiddle with. And theoretically, repeat the process over and over again until what I have is no where near what it used to be. Its sample-ception.
Damn. FL studio has all of the sequencing quality of life and creativity features that I wish Ableton had. Looks way more intuitive for someone like me.
I mean, I really don't want to take sides but if you have used both Ableton seems clearly more intuitive. Not better, at least more intuitive. At least for me.
@@SynergistN7 For sure. I used Notator, Cubase and Reason. I tried FL and it seemed impenetrable to me. Ableton just instantly clicked. That was years ago though and now I'm watching this video and damn... I might have to re-evaluate my choices.

Excellent video, Ben. Been using FL since 2009. It's by far the greatest DAW. Thanks for making this video and sharing it with the world. With lifetime free updates, I still don't understand why everyone doesn't have FL Studio. Even if it's someone's 3rd or 5th used DAW, it will be incredibly useful. Once you buy it, you have it for life.
I thought that the digital bias in music was my lack of competence as a composer, but after this monologue, I realized that I was doing everything right. I think we see the process of creating music in the same way, and seeing what heights you have managed to achieve, I will feel less emotionally shaken while writing songs (choosing a DAW with the last money, too, I decided that FL Studio would help me the best).

Definitely looking forward to future updates already, for example here are a few ideas - more live quantize options (like triplets and steps at the same time) - swing on per track basis - add live looping features to performance mode or a looper plugin - a simpler way to link choosing the instrument to midi - let us create (feedback) loop chains in patcher - more designing options in patcher surface - updated Formular controller with infinite variables, maybe more commands and vertically expandable writing space - integrate 3x osc in patcher (because white noise) - option to make mixer vertical - bigger or variable grid size in grossbeat - Analyze feature from EQUO in Parametric EQ 2 - option to have a small patcher window where usually the effects rack would be in the mixer - sample hardware synthesizer in direct wave automatically - make preset a parameter you can link to controllers/automate - copy and paste in patcher - integrate pre and post oscilloscope in waveshaper - when duplicating label in patcher also duplicate what was written - option to lock dry/wet knobs in convolver (so they stay the same when changing presets) - make browser snap to edges like other windows (when detatched from left side) - double klick on connection in patcher to delete it - custom arpeggitator patterns for the "live" arp, not the piano roll one) - linking keyboard shortcuts to other keys or midi + option to add custom shortcuts (for example defining a keyboard combination to instantly load a plugin you often use) - some kind of integration of calibration files for eq - klicking on the name (mixer, Playlist) to rename - suggest existing categories when typing in category for plugin in plugin manager - smooth random in peak controller - key mapper mapping the other way around (I know it's possible in midi center, but key mapper has way better controls) - let us change category of FL studio plugins (without them existing twice) - a couple more options for time signatures (signatures like 33/32 are pretty useful for genres like lofi) - make patterns and automation tracks expandable to the left - mix button in sampler, to mix between original and edited audio - load sample icon in convolver should be only one click to open the windows explorer and should have left right arrows for use like the Preset selecter - auto gain match button in effect rack in mixer - option to delete all markers except regions in Edison - if you name a region something with two colons, exporting it doesn't work, which is fine, but then you shouldn't be allowed to name it like that in the first place - delete all silence (with option to change treshhold) tool in Edison (not just side but also in between) - left/right separator patcher plugin - loudness meter in mixer changing between true peak, luf short setting, lufs medium setting and lufs long setting - ghost notes across different patterns - some way so if you create an audio track the file either doesn't appear on the Playlist at all, or in the area your working at instead of at the first beat - if audio file name has "... bpm" in it, handle it the same as embedded bpm - "stand by mode" that deactivates all plugins in the mixer to save cpu - simple way to disable all midi temporarily (devices often have a control center to manage things and they can't be connected to both at once which is pretty annoying) - checking tempo automation to calculate time (not just current bpm) - Putting things in feedback loop of Delay 3 in patcher - quick option to normalize samples to -14 lufs - add notes to playlist (notes as in notebook, not piano notes of course)
It's all about personal preference and what you are used to. Some DAWs have benefits in some areas over others, so you have to decide what is most important for you!
I actually switched from FL Studio to Bitwig a year or 2 ago, just because it seems to respond to my workflow better and it's more comfortable to burst out ideas for me in Bitwig, but FL Studio still has a warm spot in my heart, I still come back to it and I'll definitely will again after 21 update. I doubt I'll switch back entirely, but I will definitely revisit it more often, especially after all that auido clip tools and functionalities added

Just picked up FL studio for the Black Friday deal after watching this. I use Ableton to make music and within an hour I was able to start navigating through FL studio. I didn’t know that it even had a VST that links up to Ableton so it’s perfect for the Ableton user who wants the benefits of FL that Ben just mentioned. Also Ben, if you were to put together an extensive video on all these features and some tips and tricks and release it on your patreon , I would totally subscribe! The only reason why switched from FL to Ableton was recording live instruments and working with samples. "Make unique" thing drove me mad while doing remixes and chopping samples. But it took me at least 5 years and several Ableton versions to finally feel confident with the software like I was confident with FL.
I’m an Ableton & Reason user. My son (16yo) is a FL studio new user and I’m trying to brush up on my FL studio skills to help him with his sequencing skills. Straight away the piano roll features on FL are very impressive. This video is really helpful in getting me up to par in helping me, help my son, on his musical journey. I’m sticking with Ableton though. I’m an old dog (50yo). But I can learn some new tricks, slowly 🐕 Thank you Ben, great video.
Not all the way through this yet but DAMN that's a fucking excellent piano roll. I'm a cubase user and I love the piano roll on Cubase. I don't use it all that much as I used as I'm a much better keyboard player now but seeing the 'godly' amount of genuinely useful features in this piano roll really makes me want to double check I've not missed anything with Cubase. I probably am! Thanks for another great video.
Bravo! I've been using FLStudio since 1999 and still love it to death. Not my primary DAW as I sometimes get a little overwhelmed by all that it has to offer, but still my go-to tool for laying down basic ideas and raw tracks.
People often mock light mode themes, but as someone who suffers from visual snow and other artifacts, it can be easier and less distracting to look at than dark colors. I often feel compelled to change my color scheme when I take screenshots so people don't make "Ew, you use light mode?" comments.

Light mode is best mode when in any reasonably bright environment. Easier to read, easier to see. The only time it would be genuinely bad is either misconfigured, or generally bad monitors which have lost their brightness, contrast, and gamma control; then it is basically completely useless. Don't ask how I know. Though its also a flashbang for night lurkers. Having your lights up throughout the night just isn't right, and it is immensely fatiguing. Which should be a good thing, making you go to bed early, and having a good amount of sleep, especially a good sleep schedule, but who wants to hear that lmao
Bought FL in version 5. Been using since version 4. EXCELLENTLY explained! And yet just barely scratching the surface. Didn't realized how spoiled I was with FL's interface design until I tried other software. Can't wait to install 21!!!
Reason 10 user here. Jealous. You are speaking truth, folks have a hard time with what's not considered to be a 'standard'. Reason is hardware and wire routing to me. It's biggest strength. I see a lot of the same editing capabilities in FL Studio. Very nice!
I'd love a more in depth video on the peak controller and everything it can do. Any time I see tutorials on the plugin, It's always just for sidechaining or other small things. Love your music and your vids!
Man. You make me wish I'd found this video sooner, you sell FL Studio so well! Where I went to school for music, I was lead to believe that Digital Performer was among the best--and, I don't think it's bad by any means, but it was very difficult to learn and explore, and there are still vast portions of it that I don't understand nor take advantage of. (And the lack of content for DP on UA-cam constantly makes me feel like I backed the wrong horse (but who knows, maybe someday I'll be lucky/knowledgeable enough to fill that gap).) And since so much money (for me) has already been spent on a version of it, spending full (or even discounted) price to learn an entirely new DAW/work flow (and ostensibly abandon everything I've done so far)--it just doesn't sound practical for me at this time in my life. And, I know this video isn't meant to make me go out and buy FL Studio--it seems to me to be another example of why FL Studio should be a contender in the conversation of which DAW a musician should put their money towards, showcasing many of it's benefits. But, yeah. I don't think I'll be able to jump from the DP ship till I actually make an income off of my music (or generate a more disposable income elsewhere).

I have been using FL for a little over a year now, and recently considered changing over to Ableton. Deciding to go back and rewatch this video was a major factor in me changing my mind, and realising I still have so much to learn about this DAW
I own FL and Ableton. FL is powerful than I thought and in some extent but in general FL needs way more steps to achieve something. I need to click on 4~5 things in FL while in ableton it only takes 1~2 clicks. FL is faster in beatmaking but in other genre ableton is way faster

12:24 To this day I can say this is true, Im sure Its not only because of me, but there used to be a bug with the playlist, that when you cloned clips, you couldnt put the original clip back in the playlist at all. I remember leaving a forum post complaining and explaining the issue and less than a month later the issue was fixed, and now when you have multiple of the same clip it asks you which one you want to put in the playlist. Absolutely amazing company at every angle.
I like FL Studio, but I have some issues with how unintuitive it can be. Sometimes I'm looking for something "simple" to do, like adding chance to individual notes, and the solution for that involves routing weird things in Patcher or using FL's virtual controllers in a way that's not entirely intuitive, or writing an script, and it's frustrating. (It's worth mentioning that it's less frustrating than trying to do the same in Reaper and looking into an endless barrage of JS scripts, but ymmv.) Compare that to Bitwig, which can also basically modulate anything with anything in an easier way, for example. I feel that people that "grew up" with FL Studio have an easier time taking advantage of its capabilities than people that started using it a few years ago. If Image Line streamlined some things (like they did with the auto-routing when dragging an instrument to the track list), FL would become even more popular. However, the only thing that I really, really dislike, is the way automation envelopes are handled outside the piano roll. It would be SO great if the breaking points showed real values from the VST instead of percentages, like Studio One or Logic Pro do. Life would suddenly become way more easier.
i like creating channel layers to get some variety in my beats. for example; if i want to give something a 25% chance of playing i create 4 layers and leave 3 empty.
@@dawatcherz You do that using Fruity Layer? Because that's the kind of stuff I'm talking about: I've never tried it because the manual says Patcher is more flexible. But now, reading about the random option in it, it seems so simple... I probably would've never tried it on my own.
@@lokelosk yep, a layer channel, with the setting on random. it's also fun to use with different samples. for instance, sometimes i use it for the hats and set a couple of closed hats and one open hat as the children... then make sure to make the samples cut each other with the Cut Groups setting
@@dawatcherz Oh man, it worked like a charm, even for randomizing chords in pads a bit. It's still a finnicky if I want a bit more of control, but it's way simpler than some of the other solutions I saw online.
I commented in another video about how I used to play an instrument. You have convinced me to take it up again, and due to your passion in this video I will get this software. I want to be able to create music and I think that this software will be essential.
Finally, was able to upgrade to Cubase to Pro 3 years ago but after seeing some of the amazing things you can do in FL studio, I'm seriously considering picking it up at some point. I'm curious how long it'll take me to get more familiar with a good workflow. Change can be scary, but some of these features are dang exciting! Last time I checked, I didn't find any transition guides but maybe there's something now out there. Thanks for the great info, I'm pumped!
I've been in love with FL for a long time. Your biggest challenge will be finding your workflow. FL does not impose any and will not hand hold you through anything. It's gigantic tool box and I'm still discovering features I had no idea were there.
A cubase pro user here. I used to create sounds in patcher, and it's really fun. Now I got multipass from kiloheartz and don't look back. You can't define shortcuts in FL, and most of the time I spend in the arrangement window + custom shortcuts made me very efficient. Haven't finished a song in FL for 10 years, its arrangement window is not there yet. Big projects are pain there.
10 years on an off in FL now no other DAW but ive pretty much learned ableton and Logic just from watching other tutorials and cookups. FL has just delivered over the years. Now its arguably the most powerful. I think it is by far actually depending on your definition of powerful. But it didnt start that way with froot loops. I still have grievances over FL but its like the windows of operating systems. Still have grievances. FL really shines with shortcut knowledge and templates. Its not a linear workflow at the start but when you get it down and customize it properly man do you feel like youre cheating at times. Its insanely powerful and psychedelic. I personally couldnt stand abletons interface looks like youre doing spreadsheets in the year 1998 although I envy how easy it is to add vsts in the mixer instantly and how linear it is...but FL for life..and its freeeeee. Logic looks simple and some of my favorite artists in at least 2 different genres of my 5 favorite genres use it
Benn, I started with fruity loops 3 and then moved to fl studio 4. I went to ableton 6 back in 2006 and then into logic, where I have been since 2007. I am willing to go back to FL Studio because of what you showed with the piano roll. Unreal!!! Question - can fl studio’s current version resurrect and open fruity loops projects made in versions 3/4?

The problem with FL isn't that it lacks features, but in the way one accesses them - dozens of floatin windows, multi-level drop down menus in each if them, weird mouse shortcuts (like right click with modifiers?!). It's incredibly unintuitive and messy. Wish I could give away my license to someone who'll enjoy it more than me (I asked the support - it's not possible).
I feel like I should have gone for ableton as a aspiring electronic potato head, it's abit more intuitive for and it actually works in comparison to fl studio, my track's or patterns in fl studio go out of sync without me moving anything, alot of small problems with fl but im trying to better myself as I work with a cheaper alternative
@@rosslansberg6323 if you hold SHIFT while scrolling over a clip it will nudge it left/right, very useful for getting a waveform to start in the right spot.
I’m an Ableton user for 6 years now, started with FL 20 years ago. Been through Logic, Pro Tools. FL kills it with the Piano Roll. Was so painful to say good bye to it when switched to Ableton Live. Great vid!
You are right about FL being based on user input. You can really feel that they listen to their users. I sincerecly can't put into words how much i love this software. Its just amazing.
I stuck with Bitwig to be honest, even after all the crap ( which to be fair they corrected. ) As someone who uses ( and teaches ) Pro Tools, Logic, Ableton and now Bitwig, it just continues to blow me away; especially on the modulation and grid side. Not so much on the mixing side though, that definitely needs improvement in the aesthetic and control department.
Bitwig is quite amazing but so is fruity loops and Ableton. I think what makes me so excited about bitwig is it's future possibilities as well. I do long for a fruity loops piano roll tho. Can we get slide notes at least??
Great video! But I wonder how you integrate all those hardware synths and fxs with FL Studio while avoiding audio input latency. Most DAWs provides External Instrument/Fx devices to do that and correct latency automagically... not so in FL Studio. Thus, I am wondering how you do it :)
@@lucilaos how do you link the midi out generator to a mixer track for returning the audio from the synth in perfect sync with rest of the song? FL Studio has no idea that a audio input is coming from a synth connected to the midi out, hence cannot compensate for the latency automatically. But plz let me know how if you know a way to do that.
I myself recently switched to Ableton after using FL Studio for about 6 years now and haven’t looked back my self. Ableton just offers a lot of audio editing tools I really love that FL studio doesn’t have, but I do also see that these functions won’t be used for a lot of genres of music, or even per person. I see FL Studio more as a beat making software, which it’s really good at, and Ableton and other DAWS more as an actual audio editing software. Some new functions you showed off in 21 are getting FL closer. But stuff like the groups, easy consolidation, easy freezing and consolidation of entire tracks, the automation, workflow speed (not having to go thru a lot of menus or weird shortcuts), the effect rack, etc are just all things fl studio could really improve in for me. And something else I hear not a lot of people talking about, but the keyboard shortcuts in Ableton just make sense, maybe it’s just for me but they feel much more streamlined with other big name software. In FL I often had to actively try to remember shortcuts, while in ableton I knew most of the important ones in a week or 2. Also at the time I switched I was having big issues with the performance of FL Studio, but as you said this might’ve actually been fixed. I feel like it’s all about the type of music people make, I like to experiment a lot, rendering out weird samples and than doing weird things with that going thru entire chains to achieve textures and the like. While in fl studio I just plain didn’t want to do this as it was to much work for me, too much clicking thru menus for my liking, so I just ended up using samples on splice. FL studio does do a lot of things better though, like you said the pianoroll is one thing I miss, but also less thinking about VSTs as FL studio just finds them, in ableton they have to be all in the same location, and having your midi in a patterns for easy re-use and the in pattern LFO and things the like. I just feel like Ableton is less work once you understand it. And FL Studio is less work to understand. For people that do everything in daw but really like to still get the experimental stuff you get out of hardware I’d recommend giving ableton a try using its 3 month free trial. Ableton has full reinvigorated my interest in sound, not ONLY music but actual sound design and I’d happily pay a little extra for that experience my self.

In FL you can group tracks together, you can consolidate tracks easily, the automation is vastly superior to Live's, there are no "weird shortcuts", only shortcuts, Live's effect rack is inferior to Patcher.
@@jetlag1488 grouping is vastly superior in ableton. FL studio it’s just one group, not groups within groups. You also can’t put effects on that group so everything in that group goes thru it either in FL. The consolidation in Ableton works a lot better and quicker, and especially of midi tracks, The automation is probably just taste but I see the automation in ableton as vastly superior, always found FLs automation as too much work. With weird shortcuts I meant that FL does their own thing in that regard, while abletons shortcuts are more streamlined with other software. I’d say that the effect rack is superior aswell, as if you’d want the patcher experience you can always use max 4 live. But like I also said in my post it’s about the type of music you like to make. Both DAWS you can make music in so in the end it doesn’t matter.
I've always loved creating robot musicians as instuments in Patcher, giving them fun guis, various easily automatable macros that would range in diversity from "space maker" or "pad-ify" to "chunkify", "glitchbaby", or "tesseract". Possibilities are endless, anything can do anything, and you get to control how.
I stopped using FL after 13 years because I tried other DAWS. My biggest gripe is the fact that you have to manually send every single sound to the mixer. I know there is a keyboard shortcut but god forbid you miss one , that sound will not be in the final mix. Can’t tell you how many times I’d forget and a certain sound is gone , I’m at work and I’m pissed I can’t hear the fuckin song I spent so much time on. I STILL have PTSD from this lol I’m always worried a sound isn’t going to be in the final mix although I’m using Bitwig and logic. Its 2022 , who the fuck ISNT sending all sounds to the mixer? Don’t even get me started on the FPC plugin. Huge waste of time if you want MPC style pads and want to send each sound to the mixer. Nothing but problems with that one.
Not any more - Instrument & Audio Track workflow (linear) - Load plugins (or Audio) onto Playlist Track headers by opening the Plugin Picker (F8), Browser or external Operating System Browser (for Audio) to drag-and-drop on the desired Playlist Track header (the area at the start of the Playlist lane). Alternatively, (Right-click) target Playlist Track header and select Track mode > Instrument track and load an instrument from the pop-up menu.
You can actually go in Playlist, right click on a track, Track mode > Instrument track > and select a VST, it will automaically be routed to mixer, create a pattern, auto named etc, and every automation you have for that VST will also be automically grouped with its track. If you have a sample like a kick, again you can drop it on a playlist track and you can select audio track or instrument track if you want it in a pattern.

Obviously it's not unexpected after your brand loyalty video, but it's refreshing to hear the idea of "which brand of software you use doesn't matter anywhere near as much as what you produce with it" reiterated. I use FL, but I couldn't care less what other people use, nor which is "better". Good luck defining what is "better" for a user base of millions of people. Yet people will endlessly argue online that their preferred DAW is better when they should probably just be making music with it instead of shouting into the internet void. Though I guess stirring up arguments online tends to do wonders for "user engagement" and pleases the algorithm gods. Great video. We are in agreement! LOL! I started using FL in 2004 and have tried several different DAWs over the years and I always just come back to FL. Its really improved over the years as well.
I used FruityLoops from 1999 till around 2009. Because I was frequently being booked for live gigs I was forced to switch from FL to Ableton and from pc to mac. Back then I did some live shows with FL and my pc tower 🤣 but it was far from a practical setup. To be frank the best stuff I’ve released have all been written in FL studio but I haven’t touched or seen the progress for the past decade since I have grown accustomed to using a mac and ableton and FL was not for mac back then. Also, back in the late 90’s early 00’s FL was severely frowned upon. Thanks for this video Ben, I’ll be checking out my old love. 🤘🏼
Been use FL since 2001! .. so newbie welcome, if you guys know how how bad mouth we had deal with in the early 2000s, they use to say if you use FLS u not serious about making music! man, Benn if they only know but look at FLS now, FLS stand the test a time and win a lots award and still going strong ..

I absolutely love all the new additions to FL21, first thing I did was put the new phaser on a clap, lux verb on a snare and the multiband delay on a kickdrum. Great way to beef up your drums and give them some added flair.

as soon as i found out how node based workflows work, and i dabbled in patcher. i made my own multiband sidechain, multiband compressor and a multiband effects rack with 10 different frequency bands for very granular control :P ive never had a feeling that Fl studio cant do something, ive always just had to figure out how fl studio does it compared to the others. i love Fl studio, which to me is WAY more intuitive and user friendly compared to any of the other ones on the market

Basically a lifelong FL user here. In since ver 3. Contrary to what most people think, and quite ironically, FL's "problem" is not that it's too limitied, but rather how unlimited it is. You really have to work to develop your work flow because FL will certainly not.
You're not wrong. I felt just as anxious watching this video as I felt excited and inspired, and I have a pretty good working knowledge of After Effects.
Yeah as an ableton user I totally feel this. I never really got into fl studio but by seeing this stuff I realize how powerfull it is and how easy it CAN be. But before you are at a place where the daw is as easy to use as suggested in the video you have to spend 10x more hours on learning the software than on most other popular daws.
Everything is in submenu's and under shortkeys or under deep window diving. Which just isn't easy to get in to at all. In ableton it is the opposite, it maybe is more work to get something done, but it is so easy to see what is going on you don't need to understand every single feature to reach your goals.
@@AnoshterHaar yeah I'm demoing Cubase now after using reaper for years. Same problem there, reaper added so many features under the hood but if you download and install it today it has the same layout it did in version 3. In order to use all the powerful features you have to set up all the keys and toolbar buttons yourself. It's such a massive energy drain after a while. And good luck remembering all that. After years of using reaper I have no idea how to time warp something, but in Cubase I already figured it out because it's all on the sidebar after you click on the audio event. What a concept!
@@cl9826 yeah and I want to mention that it works different for everyone ofcourse. But I think in this age of software development it always is about finding a balance between features and ease of use. And everyone has its preferences ;)
We can be happy as music professionals/hobbyists that there is at least a forest of very competent daw's to choose from. In regard to video and photo editting the scala of software is way more limited and you often do not have many choices... So at least there is competition going on between daw's, which will push the development of all daw's much more forward than without it!
Not sure i agree with yo at all on this point. Been using FL since version 3 myself.. and the improved workflow compared to other DAWS is exactly why i have kept using FL studio.. just the configurability alone on the FX chains alone is elite., which wasn’t even mentioned.
In the plugin Grossbeat, at one point years ago they made a change in how the "click reduction" works, which had the unfortunate consequence of changing how one of my projects sounded for the worse. I put a post on the tech support forum about it, and the creator of the plugin, and FL Studio on the whole ("Gol"), replied to me and said he added an option to change the click reduction to the old version or the new version (or turn it off) depending on which better suits your material, for the next software patch to be released. You can still see the option there to this day. If any company actually listens to their customers, this one does.
Regarding slide: If you use different colors on the notes in a chord (say green = C, blue = E, pink = G), you can slide specific notes (colors) as well: If you for example add a blue slide note, only the blue notes in the chord are affected.

FL Studio is a killer daw. If you get used to, i'ts a blank canvas to do what you want, where you want and when you want... all this in 2 or 3 distinct ways. It's amazing! I use FL since 2001 and i love it.
Used to work with FL studio, but still can not comprehend how this general workflow with channel rack, arrangement and mixer being separate from one another can be intuitive and inspiring for someone. Not to mention this endless drop-down menus. Seems like to big of a price for a nice pianoroll.
FL now has "Track Mode"; you can drag and drop vsts and samples directly into the playlist and it will automatically link it to a mixer channel and the channel rack, you don't even need to look at the channel rack anymore if you don't want. The manual says this "simulates traditional sequencer workflow." =)
I like them being separate so that I can assign where each channel goes based on how I want it. Sometimes I want multiple channels going to one midi channel, while others i want certain channels going into one mixer insert or straight to the master. I like the pattern-based arrangement to keep track of my ideas and quickly duplicate and transform my previous compositions. It’s makes the workspace very flexible. Although you can essentially do the same thing in other DAW’s it seems more like a workaround than a tool to help its users, but that’s just me. also, every drop-down menu has an assigned hot-hey to select your desired option, intuitively marked by a letter of the option’s name (most options at least).
I love FL Studio for all the reasons you mentioned and more!
Regarding the pricing: You can always upgrade your FL Studio versions or buy single plugins and your price always gets reduced by what you already have! I started with the producer edition, but bought one or two plugins for Black Friday since the jump to All Plugins was too big for me. Then when I bought All Plugins on a discount, it reduced the price even further bc I already had producer edition and the plugins! I think it's fantastic that you can upgrade at your own pace and financial ability!
That said there are still a few things I wish they would add. One is having the granulizer work in Patcher. That would open up a huge amount of custom plugin possibilities. The other is having a control output for Patcher. Sometimes I patch together several Formulas and XY Controllers and Peak Controllers and wish I could just package them together and reuse in Patcher.

Been using FL since 99' , the flexibility is unmatched. "Mixes itself" is so true, rarely do I mix after the fact, it's already done.

I know we all like to parade the strengths of FL. The piano roll makes it super easy to get ideas out of your head and into midi, and the envelope/peak controls are awesome. The truth is, that we finally get an envelope and crossfading tool for audio in 21, and that might be my favorite new thing, which is a glaring hole that it has had in it as a daw for a long time.
It's the things we're willing to put up with which speaks volumes on how good the rest of it is!
I think you should just open up the FL studio manual and go to a section (for example, if ur making a song and using the piano roll - open up the piano roll section) and go through everything and see what you can apply.
That’s how I learned to make best use of this software and I just started this past summer without paying or relying on others to teach me through videos or courses. It’s really not that difficult.
Ultimately you’re going to end up putting in the same amount of time learning or teaching yourself.
It was already there all the time: On every clip in the playlist you can click its little Menu -> Automate -> Volume
But with Version 21 they make it *_even easier._* Viva la quality of life!
@@TheBigLou13 You are correct. I am all about that life. I am just looking forward to having other parts of the program, like clips and audio, as refined as the piano roll, and there are other programs that put it right in front of you which makes this group of people that rewire or stem to get into another program. We are getting there, and the performance has stayed pretty great considering how full featured the program is. Streamlining that crossfading helps a lot of people that work with break beats or single hits in the lane and i think it really enhances the mixer routing and and workflow by keeping edison/sf out of the equation in certain moments. pitch and time/groove correction is good with a few, more robust enhancements and refinements to the tools, they have made a pretty decent tracking environment.
Can someone tell me why it took them so long to incorporate manual fade ins and fade outs? It seems like such an obvious thing that every daw needs. Im glad they finally did it

I've been using it since it was called Fruity Loops. Nowadays i prefer the less featured, open source fork LMMS, because my creativity is born from limitation.

I have been using fl for past 15 years on and off and i love it. I have started to use it permanently now everyday for creative expression. I love it❤
FL Studio has always been a curiosity for me. I'm a Live user and a Reason user before that. I also mix in ProTools. But FL Studio...it doesn't get the love it deserves unless you KNOW how damn good it is. If there had been a Mac version years ago, I probably would have picked it over Live. Ableton hasn't done much to Live since V11, while Image Line just constantly innovates, improves, updates, and adds new stuff. Now that there is a Mac versions, I should check it out next year. At least try to make one track in it, just to see how I like it compared to Live.

You named some of the biggest reasons why I LOVE FL Studio: the piano roll is OP, fruity peak controller is OP, linking everything to anything else just blows my mind. I'm working on a project where the mixer is only treated as send tracks, have every instrument channel be a patcher channel & just automate the mixer track insert numbers, just because you can in FL!
Oh yea, the last reason is, they really listen to their users! I borderlined complained about a few missing features in FL Studio Mobile, & they actually implemented a simple, but powerful feature that I've never seen in any other mobile daw. Thank you Image Line!
Been producing on FL studio for about 4-5 years now, still feel like a noob, learned so much about the interconnectivity of the software, put some of those peak compression tips to use and was blown away.
If I could somewhat selfishly request a video on other tips and tricks you believe everyone should know about FL studio, it would be deeply appreciated.
The flexibility that FL offers is way too good. It allows me to get deep into the creative process without having to worry about making sure my midi tracks are on the correct channel, but when I need to link mixer tracks to playlist tracks, I can do so with relative ease. I recently recorded a multi track from a live set with FL, and I was impressed with it's capabilities. Considering we're learning Pro Tools in my degree program, it's gonna have to do a lot of convincing to get me to use Pro Tools more than FL.

Live is perfect for mixing in a classic way and performing live, but the piano roll in FL... gosh, that's how I was introduced to songwriting! 12/10
Sometimes i just deeply regret that at some time i was blown away by Ableton's GUI and didn't appreciate the idea of pure freedom in FL.
Thanks to your video I'm planning to return to my beloved FL at least once in in a week for some inspiration, and continuing to work in Live as my main DAW. After all those years, FL.. It's grown up a bit, I see. And there's no point in fighting for any DAW on the market, you can use all of them, if your bank account will allow that.

OMG - I have been studying Fl studio for 2 years now and I still didn't know that you can edit any parameter in the piano roll. I keep on finding new things, its like an endless learning curve for me. Thank you so much, this was super helpful. I am now having fun creating multi delay effects in the piano roll!
My budget hasn't been able to keep up with Ableton upgrades and I've been looking for other alternatives. This makes FL Studio look REALLY tempting, even with Push currently as my primary interface with my DAW.

I paid for all upgrades of Live since version 8 and while there are some things i really like about V11, there are also things i dislike, for instance how they changed the audio and midi clip menu. the new layout is still confusing to me. Also it seems that V11 is much more of a CPU hog than V10. I run one modern plugin in Live and it takes 40 to 60% of the CPU while it takes a bit less in FL and a lot less in Reaper.
I recently bought FL Studio and i highly recommend it! It's given a fresh perspective on producing after more than a decade in Live. and this one won't cost me thousands to update with seemingly significantly better updates!

One of my favorite things... That I can't wrap my mind around how amazing it is... Is that I can create a very cool riff in piano roll, and put it in the playlist, and then render THAT into an individual audio sample, that I can then tweak and fiddle with. And theoretically, repeat the process over and over again until what I have is no where near what it used to be.

Excellent video, Ben. Been using FL since 2009. It's by far the greatest DAW. Thanks for making this video and sharing it with the world. With lifetime free updates, I still don't understand why everyone doesn't have FL Studio. Even if it's someone's 3rd or 5th used DAW, it will be incredibly useful. Once you buy it, you have it for life.
I thought that the digital bias in music was my lack of competence as a composer, but after this monologue, I realized that I was doing everything right. I think we see the process of creating music in the same way, and seeing what heights you have managed to achieve, I will feel less emotionally shaken while writing songs (choosing a DAW with the last money, too, I decided that FL Studio would help me the best).
Love the update so far. Definitely looking forward to future updates already, for example here are a few ideas
- more live quantize options (like triplets and steps at the same time)
- swing on per track basis
- add live looping features to performance mode or a looper plugin
- a simpler way to link choosing the instrument to midi
- let us create (feedback) loop chains in patcher
- more designing options in patcher surface
- updated Formular controller with infinite variables, maybe more commands and vertically expandable writing space
- integrate 3x osc in patcher (because white noise)
- option to make mixer vertical
- bigger or variable grid size in grossbeat
- Analyze feature from EQUO in Parametric EQ 2
- option to have a small patcher window where usually the effects rack would be in the mixer
- sample hardware synthesizer in direct wave automatically
- make preset a parameter you can link to controllers/automate
- copy and paste in patcher
- integrate pre and post oscilloscope in waveshaper
- when duplicating label in patcher also duplicate what was written
- option to lock dry/wet knobs in convolver (so they stay the same when changing presets)
- make browser snap to edges like other windows (when detatched from left side)
- double klick on connection in patcher to delete it
- custom arpeggitator patterns for the "live" arp, not the piano roll one)
- linking keyboard shortcuts to other keys or midi + option to add custom shortcuts (for example defining a keyboard combination to instantly load a plugin you often use)
- some kind of integration of calibration files for eq
- klicking on the name (mixer, Playlist) to rename
- suggest existing categories when typing in category for plugin in plugin manager
- smooth random in peak controller
- key mapper mapping the other way around (I know it's possible in midi center, but key mapper has way better controls)
- let us change category of FL studio plugins (without them existing twice)
- a couple more options for time signatures (signatures like 33/32 are pretty useful for genres like lofi)
- make patterns and automation tracks expandable to the left
- mix button in sampler, to mix between original and edited audio
- load sample icon in convolver should be only one click to open the windows explorer and should have left right arrows for use like the Preset selecter
- auto gain match button in effect rack in mixer
- option to delete all markers except regions in Edison
- if you name a region something with two colons, exporting it doesn't work, which is fine, but then you shouldn't be allowed to name it like that in the first place
- delete all silence (with option to change treshhold) tool in Edison (not just side but also in between)
- left/right separator patcher plugin
- loudness meter in mixer changing between true peak, luf short setting, lufs medium setting and lufs long setting
- ghost notes across different patterns
- some way so if you create an audio track the file either doesn't appear on the Playlist at all, or in the area your working at instead of at the first beat
- if audio file name has "... bpm" in it, handle it the same as embedded bpm
- "stand by mode" that deactivates all plugins in the mixer to save cpu
- simple way to disable all midi temporarily (devices often have a control center to manage things and they can't be connected to both at once which is pretty annoying)
- checking tempo automation to calculate time (not just current bpm)
- Putting things in feedback loop of Delay 3 in patcher
- quick option to normalize samples to -14 lufs
- add notes to playlist (notes as in notebook, not piano notes of course)

It's all about personal preference and what you are used to. Some DAWs have benefits in some areas over others, so you have to decide what is most important for you!
I actually switched from FL Studio to Bitwig a year or 2 ago, just because it seems to respond to my workflow better and it's more comfortable to burst out ideas for me in Bitwig, but FL Studio still has a warm spot in my heart, I still come back to it and I'll definitely will again after 21 update. I doubt I'll switch back entirely, but I will definitely revisit it more often, especially after all that auido clip tools and functionalities added

FL is crazy, i customized everything. The whole program is made to exactly fit my needs. I do it in the user Files, so fun to organize
The only reason why switched from FL to Ableton was recording live instruments and working with samples. "Make unique" thing drove me mad while doing remixes and chopping samples.
But it took me at least 5 years and several Ableton versions to finally feel confident with the software like I was confident with FL.
I’m an Ableton & Reason user. My son (16yo) is a FL studio new user and I’m trying to brush up on my FL studio skills to help him with his sequencing skills.
Straight away the piano roll features on FL are very impressive.
This video is really helpful in getting me up to par in helping me, help my son, on his musical journey.
I’m sticking with Ableton though. I’m an old dog (50yo). But I can learn some new tricks, slowly 🐕

Not all the way through this yet but DAMN that's a fucking excellent piano roll. I'm a cubase user and I love the piano roll on Cubase. I don't use it all that much as I used as I'm a much better keyboard player now but seeing the 'godly' amount of genuinely useful features in this piano roll really makes me want to double check I've not missed anything with Cubase. I probably am!

Bravo! I've been using FLStudio since 1999 and still love it to death. Not my primary DAW as I sometimes get a little overwhelmed by all that it has to offer, but still my go-to tool for laying down basic ideas and raw tracks.
People often mock light mode themes, but as someone who suffers from visual snow and other artifacts, it can be easier and less distracting to look at than dark colors. I often feel compelled to change my color scheme when I take screenshots so people don't make "Ew, you use light mode?" comments.

Light mode is best mode when in any reasonably bright environment. Easier to read, easier to see. The only time it would be genuinely bad is either misconfigured, or generally bad monitors which have lost their brightness, contrast, and gamma control; then it is basically completely useless. Don't ask how I know.
Though its also a flashbang for night lurkers. Having your lights up throughout the night just isn't right, and it is immensely fatiguing. Which should be a good thing, making you go to bed early, and having a good amount of sleep, especially a good sleep schedule, but who wants to hear that lmao

Reason 10 user here. Jealous. You are speaking truth, folks have a hard time with what's not considered to be a 'standard'. Reason is hardware and wire routing to me. It's biggest strength. I see a lot of the same editing capabilities in FL Studio. Very nice!
I'd love a more in depth video on the peak controller and everything it can do. Any time I see tutorials on the plugin, It's always just for sidechaining or other small things. Love your music and your vids!

Man. You make me wish I'd found this video sooner, you sell FL Studio so well! Where I went to school for music, I was lead to believe that Digital Performer was among the best--and, I don't think it's bad by any means, but it was very difficult to learn and explore, and there are still vast portions of it that I don't understand nor take advantage of. (And the lack of content for DP on UA-cam constantly makes me feel like I backed the wrong horse (but who knows, maybe someday I'll be lucky/knowledgeable enough to fill that gap).) And since so much money (for me) has already been spent on a version of it, spending full (or even discounted) price to learn an entirely new DAW/work flow (and ostensibly abandon everything I've done so far)--it just doesn't sound practical for me at this time in my life. And, I know this video isn't meant to make me go out and buy FL Studio--it seems to me to be another example of why FL Studio should be a contender in the conversation of which DAW a musician should put their money towards, showcasing many of it's benefits. But, yeah. I don't think I'll be able to jump from the DP ship till I actually make an income off of my music (or generate a more disposable income elsewhere).

I own FL and Ableton. FL is powerful than I thought and in some extent but in general FL needs way more steps to achieve something. I need to click on 4~5 things in FL while in ableton it only takes 1~2 clicks. FL is faster in beatmaking but in other genre ableton is way faster

12:24 To this day I can say this is true, Im sure Its not only because of me, but there used to be a bug with the playlist, that when you cloned clips, you couldnt put the original clip back in the playlist at all. I remember leaving a forum post complaining and explaining the issue and less than a month later the issue was fixed, and now when you have multiple of the same clip it asks you which one you want to put in the playlist. Absolutely amazing company at every angle.
I like FL Studio, but I have some issues with how unintuitive it can be. Sometimes I'm looking for something "simple" to do, like adding chance to individual notes, and the solution for that involves routing weird things in Patcher or using FL's virtual controllers in a way that's not entirely intuitive, or writing an script, and it's frustrating. (It's worth mentioning that it's less frustrating than trying to do the same in Reaper and looking into an endless barrage of JS scripts, but ymmv.)
Compare that to Bitwig, which can also basically modulate anything with anything in an easier way, for example. I feel that people that "grew up" with FL Studio have an easier time taking advantage of its capabilities than people that started using it a few years ago. If Image Line streamlined some things (like they did with the auto-routing when dragging an instrument to the track list), FL would become even more popular.
However, the only thing that I really, really dislike, is the way automation envelopes are handled outside the piano roll. It would be SO great if the breaking points showed real values from the VST instead of percentages, like Studio One or Logic Pro do. Life would suddenly become way more easier.
i like creating channel layers to get some variety in my beats.
for example; if i want to give something a 25% chance of playing i create 4 layers and leave 3 empty.
@@dawatcherz You do that using Fruity Layer? Because that's the kind of stuff I'm talking about: I've never tried it because the manual says Patcher is more flexible. But now, reading about the random option in it, it seems so simple...

it's also fun to use with different samples. for instance, sometimes i use it for the hats and set a couple of closed hats and one open hat as the children... then make sure to make the samples cut each other with the Cut Groups setting
@@dawatcherz Oh man, it worked like a charm, even for randomizing chords in pads a bit. It's still a finnicky if I want a bit more of control, but it's way simpler than some of the other solutions I saw online.

I commented in another video about how I used to play an instrument. You have convinced me to take it up again, and due to your passion in this video I will get this software. I want to be able to create music and I think that this software will be essential.
Finally, was able to upgrade to Cubase to Pro 3 years ago but after seeing some of the amazing things you can do in FL studio, I'm seriously considering picking it up at some point. I'm curious how long it'll take me to get more familiar with a good workflow. Change can be scary, but some of these features are dang exciting! Last time I checked, I didn't find any transition guides but maybe there's something now out there. Thanks for the great info, I'm pumped!
FL/Cubase hybrid is a hit!
I've been in love with FL for a long time. Your biggest challenge will be finding your workflow. FL does not impose any and will not hand hold you through anything. It's gigantic tool box and I'm still discovering features I had no idea were there.
A cubase pro user here. I used to create sounds in patcher, and it's really fun. Now I got multipass from kiloheartz and don't look back. You can't define shortcuts in FL, and most of the time I spend in the arrangement window + custom shortcuts made me very efficient. Haven't finished a song in FL for 10 years, its arrangement window is not there yet. Big projects are pain there.
10 years on an off in FL now no other DAW but ive pretty much learned ableton and Logic just from watching other tutorials and cookups. FL has just delivered over the years. Now its arguably the most powerful. I think it is by far actually depending on your definition of powerful. But it didnt start that way with froot loops. I still have grievances over FL but its like the windows of operating systems. Still have grievances. FL really shines with shortcut knowledge and templates. Its not a linear workflow at the start but when you get it down and customize it properly man do you feel like youre cheating at times. Its insanely powerful and psychedelic. I personally couldnt stand abletons interface looks like youre doing spreadsheets in the year 1998 although I envy how easy it is to add vsts in the mixer instantly and how linear it is...but FL for life..and its freeeeee. Logic looks simple and some of my favorite artists in at least 2 different genres of my 5 favorite genres use it
Benn, I started with fruity loops 3 and then moved to fl studio 4. I went to ableton 6 back in 2006 and then into logic, where I have been since 2007. I am willing to go back to FL Studio because of what you showed with the piano roll. Unreal!!! Question - can fl studio’s current version resurrect and open fruity loops projects made in versions 3/4?
It should be able to. There were some changes like global swing, but generally your projects have high chance of being successfully opened.

1. nostalgia for good old days;
2. to remember what you considered a "cool music" back then;
3. there is a possibility of nice ideas buried and lost somewhere, if in 2007 you already produced something recognizably decent
3+ years in i bought FL before i ever knew about other DAWs. i tried a few 😅 I'm REALLY glad i started with FL 👉😌
The problem with FL isn't that it lacks features, but in the way one accesses them - dozens of floatin windows, multi-level drop down menus in each if them, weird mouse shortcuts (like right click with modifiers?!). It's incredibly unintuitive and messy. Wish I could give away my license to someone who'll enjoy it more than me (I asked the support - it's not possible).
I feel like I should have gone for ableton as a aspiring electronic potato head, it's abit more intuitive for and it actually works in comparison to fl studio, my track's or patterns in fl studio go out of sync without me moving anything, alot of small problems with fl but im trying to better myself as I work with a cheaper alternative

@@rosslansberg6323 if you hold SHIFT while scrolling over a clip it will nudge it left/right, very useful for getting a waveform to start in the right spot.
I agree that the default shortcuts are absolutely stupid, FL21 will allow custom shortcuts iirc
The workflow isn’t bad at all. I believe Ableton is clunky in that sense. There’s no room for flexibility-everything is too “linear”.
I’m an Ableton user for 6 years now, started with FL 20 years ago. Been through Logic, Pro Tools. FL kills it with the Piano Roll. Was so painful to say good bye to it when switched to Ableton Live. Great vid!

I stuck with Bitwig to be honest, even after all the crap ( which to be fair they corrected. ) As someone who uses ( and teaches ) Pro Tools, Logic, Ableton and now Bitwig, it just continues to blow me away; especially on the modulation and grid side. Not so much on the mixing side though, that definitely needs improvement in the aesthetic and control department.

Bitwig is quite amazing but so is fruity loops and Ableton. I think what makes me so excited about bitwig is it's future possibilities as well.

Great video! But I wonder how you integrate all those hardware synths and fxs with FL Studio while avoiding audio input latency. Most DAWs provides External Instrument/Fx devices to do that and correct latency automagically... not so in FL Studio. Thus, I am wondering how you do it :)

@@lucilaos how do you link the midi out generator to a mixer track for returning the audio from the synth in perfect sync with rest of the song? FL Studio has no idea that a audio input is coming from a synth connected to the midi out, hence cannot compensate for the latency automatically. But plz let me know how if you know a way to do that.

I myself recently switched to Ableton after using FL Studio for about 6 years now and haven’t looked back my self. Ableton just offers a lot of audio editing tools I really love that FL studio doesn’t have, but I do also see that these functions won’t be used for a lot of genres of music, or even per person.
I see FL Studio more as a beat making software, which it’s really good at, and Ableton and other DAWS more as an actual audio editing software.
Some new functions you showed off in 21 are getting FL closer. But stuff like the groups, easy consolidation, easy freezing and consolidation of entire tracks, the automation, workflow speed (not having to go thru a lot of menus or weird shortcuts), the effect rack, etc are just all things fl studio could really improve in for me. And something else I hear not a lot of people talking about, but the keyboard shortcuts in Ableton just make sense, maybe it’s just for me but they feel much more streamlined with other big name software.
In FL I often had to actively try to remember shortcuts, while in ableton I knew most of the important ones in a week or 2. Also at the time I switched I was having big issues with the performance of FL Studio, but as you said this might’ve actually been fixed.
I feel like it’s all about the type of music people make, I like to experiment a lot, rendering out weird samples and than doing weird things with that going thru entire chains to achieve textures and the like. While in fl studio I just plain didn’t want to do this as it was to much work for me, too much clicking thru menus for my liking, so I just ended up using samples on splice. FL studio does do a lot of things better though, like you said the pianoroll is one thing I miss, but also less thinking about VSTs as FL studio just finds them, in ableton they have to be all in the same location, and having your midi in a patterns for easy re-use and the in pattern LFO and things the like. I just feel like Ableton is less work once you understand it. And FL Studio is less work to understand. For people that do everything in daw but really like to still get the experimental stuff you get out of hardware I’d recommend giving ableton a try using its 3 month free trial. Ableton has full reinvigorated my interest in sound, not ONLY music but actual sound design and I’d happily pay a little extra for that experience my self.

Well you're wrong.
In FL you can group tracks together, you can consolidate tracks easily, the automation is vastly superior to Live's, there are no "weird shortcuts", only shortcuts, Live's effect rack is inferior to Patcher.
@@jetlag1488 grouping is vastly superior in ableton. FL studio it’s just one group, not groups within groups. You also can’t put effects on that group so everything in that group goes thru it either in FL. The consolidation in Ableton works a lot better and quicker, and especially of midi tracks, The automation is probably just taste but I see the automation in ableton as vastly superior, always found FLs automation as too much work. With weird shortcuts I meant that FL does their own thing in that regard, while abletons shortcuts are more streamlined with other software. I’d say that the effect rack is superior aswell, as if you’d want the patcher experience you can always use max 4 live. But like I also said in my post it’s about the type of music you like to make. Both DAWS you can make music in so in the end it doesn’t matter.
I've always loved creating robot musicians as instuments in Patcher, giving them fun guis, various easily automatable macros that would range in diversity from "space maker" or "pad-ify" to "chunkify", "glitchbaby", or "tesseract". Possibilities are endless, anything can do anything, and you get to control how.

The piano roll IS the reason I still use it over Ableton (or any other DAW). It's perfect.
I stopped using FL after 13 years because I tried other DAWS. My biggest gripe is the fact that you have to manually send every single sound to the mixer.
I know there is a keyboard shortcut but god forbid you miss one , that sound will not be in the final mix. Can’t tell you how many times I’d forget and a certain sound is gone , I’m at work and I’m pissed I can’t hear the fuckin song I spent so much time on. I STILL have PTSD from this lol I’m always worried a sound isn’t going to be in the final mix although I’m using Bitwig and logic.
Its 2022 , who the fuck ISNT sending all sounds to the mixer?
Don’t even get me started on the FPC plugin. Huge waste of time if you want MPC style pads and want to send each sound to the mixer. Nothing but problems with that one.
Not any more - Instrument & Audio Track workflow (linear) - Load plugins (or Audio) onto Playlist Track headers by opening the Plugin Picker (F8), Browser or external Operating System Browser (for Audio) to drag-and-drop on the desired Playlist Track header (the area at the start of the Playlist lane). Alternatively, (Right-click) target Playlist Track header and select Track mode > Instrument track and load an instrument from the pop-up menu.
You can actually go in Playlist, right click on a track, Track mode > Instrument track > and select a VST, it will automaically be routed to mixer, create a pattern, auto named etc, and every automation you have for that VST will also be automically grouped with its track. If you have a sample like a kick, again you can drop it on a playlist track and you can select audio track or instrument track if you want it in a pattern.
That’s a extremely weird reason to ditch fl LOL. It takes 2 seconds to assign to the mixer

Been using it since I started out. Used it for every track and project I worked on.
I tried out a bunch of other DAWs, really liked Ableton and Bitwig but I always came back to FL
The FL piano roll is so good! When I switched to Cubase for DAW stuff I tried for awhile unsuccessfully to connect FL piano roll into Cubase.
Obviously it's not unexpected after your brand loyalty video, but it's refreshing to hear the idea of "which brand of software you use doesn't matter anywhere near as much as what you produce with it" reiterated.
I use FL, but I couldn't care less what other people use, nor which is "better". Good luck defining what is "better" for a user base of millions of people. Yet people will endlessly argue online that their preferred DAW is better when they should probably just be making music with it instead of shouting into the internet void.
Though I guess stirring up arguments online tends to do wonders for "user engagement" and pleases the algorithm gods.

Great video. We are in agreement! LOL! I started using FL in 2004 and have tried several different DAWs over the years and I always just come back to FL. Its really improved over the years as well.

I used FruityLoops from 1999 till around 2009. Because I was frequently being booked for live gigs I was forced to switch from FL to Ableton and from pc to mac. Back then I did some live shows with FL and my pc tower 🤣 but it was far from a practical setup. To be frank the best stuff I’ve released have all been written in FL studio but I haven’t touched or seen the progress for the past decade since I have grown accustomed to using a mac and ableton and FL was not for mac back then.
Also, back in the late 90’s early 00’s FL was severely frowned upon. Thanks for this video Ben, I’ll be checking out my old love. 🤘🏼

Been use FL since 2001! .. so newbie welcome, if you guys know how how bad mouth we had deal with in the early 2000s, they use to say if you use FLS u not serious about making music! man, Benn if they only know but look at FLS now, FLS stand the test a time and win a lots award and still going strong ..
Awesome. I'd kill for you to make a serie of videos exploring the different features and capabilities of FL. I didn't know a tenth of what you show about the piano roll despite using FL since version 11. Keep up the awesome work
I work with FL since 2002, the best DAW i know. (yes, i also tried Cubase, Bitwig, StudioOne = all the same, and Ableton, Reason)
Great stuff man. I'm an FL user and I'm surprised I just found out about your channel (curse you UA-cam Algorithm). More people need to know how powerful FL is.
I absolutely love all the new additions to FL21, first thing I did was put the new phaser on a clap, lux verb on a snare and the multiband delay on a kickdrum. Great way to beef up your drums and give them some added flair.

I've had FL for over a year now and it's been fantastic. I just don't know how to use it properly. I've done a couple tracks from it, too. I'm still a beginner (UA-cam-taught) at music production and thanks for the lessons! I really appreciate them.
as soon as i found out how node based workflows work, and i dabbled in patcher. i made my own multiband sidechain, multiband compressor and a multiband effects rack with 10 different frequency bands for very granular control :P ive never had a feeling that Fl studio cant do something, ive always just had to figure out how fl studio does it compared to the others. i love Fl studio, which to me is WAY more intuitive and user friendly compared to any of the other ones on the market
