      @mr leon It's adapting to the different workflows that's the biggest hurdle. You know what you want to do, but it gets frustrating trying to find the relevant equivalent methods in DAW X that you're used to doing instantly in DAW Y. Nowadays, pretty much all of the DAWs are feature-equivalent in most regards. It's just down to which workflow you prefer.

      I think one thing you gotta keep in mind is that most beats or musical projects don't have to get done right away, and things aren't always going to come out exactly the way you envisioned at the beginning. You gotta give yourself space to make mistakes and explore sounds and be okay with what you come out with at the end. If you feel like your final product isn't good enough just keep practicing and you will eventually get to where you want to be.

      I started out in an online DAW called Soundtrap in June 2017, then looked into FL Studio that Winter. I loved it, and kept using it for over four years until I switched to Logic. It was a decent experience.
      However, I now use Ableton Live, as the interface is somewhat similar to Logic, but the automation and the way you insert plugins and audio is so much better in my opinion.

      No offence to Ableton users, more as a compliment, If you can use that you must be a wizard. Ableton IS capable considering so many good producers use it.

    • @Thes4LT
      @Thes4LT 2 роки тому +2

      @@necrobynerton7384 IMO Ableton is actually much more intuitive and simple than FL. I tried to learn FL a long time ago and gave up after a few hours. I was confused by the matryoshka menus inside of menus, dragging around a bunch of separate windows, all the submenus and tabs, the way clips work, and so on. On the other hand, Ableton was immediately intuitive for me. The arrangement view works exactly how I expected it to. Using clips is easy. The piano roll is a lot easier to use and it's a lot faster as well. I went from knowing nothing about Ableton to making simple beats in probably 30 minutes.
      Funny thing is, I used to watch a lot of BusyWorksBeats tutorials years ago. They're pretty garbage, but tutorials are generalizable across DAWs. By watching him use FL, I started to realize its weaknesses. Mostly, the workflow is atrocious due to the complicated UI. To reverse an audio clip, you have to click through something like 2 or 3 menus. In Ableton you just right click the audio and reverse it like in any other program. Resampling is very hard in FL compared to Ableton. You need to use its built-in audio editor, Edison, which works like a VST and has its own separate menu. Then, you have to copy the audio out of it and paste and align it with the measure. In Ableton you just click the output dropdown and select "Resample" and it does it right in the clip arrangement without any alignment necessary. To make clip variations in FL Studio you have to go into some menus and click buttons or clone patterns. Working with clips in FL is a massive pain. In Ableton you just press CTRL+D or right click and duplicate then start messing with the new clip you've made. It works just like any other editing software. Automation is notoriously difficult in FL since you need to do it in a separate channel for each thing automated. EDM tracks end up with like 300 different channels, which looks insane on UA-cam and shocks outsiders, but you wouldn't want to have to produce like that. Plus, the drawing tools are not great. In Ableton you literally just draw all your automation on the same channel as whatever you're automating and switch using a dropdown box. It saves so much time it's crazy. Speaking of channels, Ableton doesn't really have the same limitations as FL, making gain staging immensely easier. Watching people try to gain stage or make busses in FL is like watching someone try to comb their hair with a fork. In Ableton you literally just hit CTRL + G to group some channels and then put a group inside another group and you've got a bus. In Ableton 10+ you can just stack these forever. Channel routing is easy too you just change the inputs and outputs using a drop down menu. Pretty much everything is visible to you when you start Ableton and nothing is hidden inside of submenus. Mixing and mastering in FL is truly painful which is why many FL producers use external software to mix or master their tracks, not FL. On the other hand, I've seen a lot of Ableton users just mix and master inside of Ableton.
      FL's UI and workflow sucks. Other designers think so as well, which is why virtually every other alternative DAW looks like Ableton. Cubase, Studio One, Reaper, even Logic are more similar to Ableton than to FL. Fact of the matter is that Ableton was designed from the ground up for fast and easy usage, since it was supposed to be a tool for live performance and DJing. It is, well, consequently fast and easy to use. Many FL users who try Ableton switch over once they get enough money. FL's only advantage is that it delivers a full feature set for a relatively small price tag and has good native plugins. Ableton, on the other hand, is very limited unless you buy the ultimate edition and have a bunch of third party plugins. It's sort of the professional's DAW while FL is a casual or hobbyist's DAW.
      They share some similarities though. Ableton and FL have the same clip-based looping abilities. I think people get confused in Ableton because it defaults to this clip/loop view instead of the session view. The clip view is designed for DJing or brainstorming, not really for arranging tracks or programming midi. In reality this is basically just the same thing as the pattern window in FL studio.

      @necrobynerton7384 2 роки тому +2

      @@Thes4LT That is... Quite the description for Ableton, and seems that the downsides you mentioned for FL studio are, in fact, true. I will take this newfound info and try Ableton again, I will see if I change my mind.
      I guess, since I don't have any other experience I think FL studio is good at what it does, but most definitively it has A LOT of menus to go through - though sometimes I prefer having things separately, not just using this program but in general.
      Again, maybe due to my inexperience, so far having everything on a separate channel (especially automation) I can easily find what I am doing, but mostly because nothing ever exceeded over like 40-50 channels for me, so not much of a hassle to go through, but since you mentioned over 300 channels I can see how painful that could be.
      Stock plugins I most definitively find good in FL studio - I use Surge as my main VST now (third party) but back like 2 years ago I used Harmor and Harmless, pretty powerful but still feel like you just cant find what you need in the UI. As for effects, I haven't used much outside of LovePhilter, the Parametric EQ2, and some other stock effects
      Another thing is, I actually don't use samples much, except for obviously the drums, but thats it. I try to make my own sounds always. Takes time and effort but again, I am not in any rush for an audience, since the audience is myself. I see most producers use samples, and as far as I have seen doing stuff to samples with ableton seems to be easier than fl studio, even on my experience you did have to go through so many hoops to have a sample proper in your track.
      Oh and yea duplicating clips is like nonexistent in FL studio, and I always created a new pattern an copied whatever pattern I was trying to duplicate. Another way is to put the same clip twice and use the "Make unique" option to basically do that, but it doesn't have a shortcut (at least I am not aware of) so it does make it a pain. Piano roll has duplicate, if you want to duplicate say a 2 bar melody over to 4, you just press CTRL + B and does that, but thats about it
      Overall thanks for the insight, I certainly did not expect that big of a comment, but regardless, I will look into ableton again

      fl is a lot more user friendly than ableton biased people are giving it credit for...But I can agree about all the menus that you have to which between. But I use dual screens so no issues for me...I've used many different daws over the years, but for some reason ableton is by far the hardest to get a grasp of. Nothing seems to work the way that you think it should (at least for me). And there seems to always be a bunch of useless info onscreen in which you can't seem to get rid of. With fl's ui, you can close windows you aren't using and you can resize nearly everything.

    • @necrobynerton7384
      @necrobynerton7384 2 роки тому +1

      @@ericwarr9088 So, well, after a few weeks of trying
      I still can't use ableton. Maybe because having 5 years of FL usage I have become way too accustomed to the UI and changing that workflow I get completely lost since I expect things differently.
      Like in my first comment I seriously can't grasp the UI and feels very unintuitive.
      Also considering I am not a keyboard shortcut user, at least not a heavy user, I find Ableton hard to use. Still not saying which is better since it is personal preference (and maybe one has advantages over the other, that much is not being questioned) but for me FL still is more friendly UI wise.

      Even with a Maschine, you're not going to come CLOSE to what a Launchpad+Launchkey+LaunchControl can do, without even leaving Clip View.
      And FL only sounds "mastered" when compared to *un*-mastered Ableton samples, LOL.
      that all said, Cakewalk is easily the best DAW out there. Its the ONLY truly unlimited DAW; zero paywalls to access literally everything.

For drum programming or piano roll, FL is better, for automation, sample manipulation and live recording of instruments like guitar ableton is better

    FL Studio is an incredibly flexible DAW which makes it so easy to hop into and start creating. From what I’ve heard, Ableton users don’t like FL because of how flexible it is, i.e. being able to put whatever you want wherever you want-which can make things incredibly messy-but it becomes a powerful tool if you how to use it.

    • @spht9ng
      @spht9ng 2 роки тому

      It’s also a nightmare for recording vocals or live instruments. I hate that I can't select where the clips are laid down on the playlist. And you also can't join audio or midi clips like you would on Logic or Ableton. Another issue is the fact that you can't just double the length and duplicate a pattern easily. You have to either click in every note in the step sequencer again manually or have to duplicate the pattern and then lay the two patterns in the right order on the playlist which sucks because you can't join the clips and easily paste it as one piece.

    Ive tried both.. FL Studio.. Once youve got it down, is SOOO powerful. It just makes things go so much faster. Like Ivve be making a beat and my gf will say "Wtf are you typing lyrics? I dont see a wordpad or anything" and Im like no, Im using hot keys and shortcuts. So once you have all this down, and yes other DAW have shortcuts but Fl just is supreme. Everything has its own little window that you can go from each to each so youre not on the same screen, you can focus on exactly what youre working on, and even the aesthetics make the production sound better. Then you have, on the left, a kind of "trick" which is in Mixer Presets where you can chose a mastering preset.. And there are many to chose from, but it kind of bumps up your mixing and mastering baseline much higher. Just that alone almost makes it sound mastered already. I swear by Fl... Ill never use a different DAW ever. FL is KING.

    Ableton seemed to always feel like it was proprietary like apple and gained more popularity do to external launch pads and just ease of live performance setups for artist stage transitions. but fl does everything ableton can now as far as i know.

      I own Cubase but am currently trying FL Studio. The beat making workflow and the ability to make some pretty complicated drum parts, is what I will buy a copy of FL Studio for. The layout of the software the "window" layout, the way you just about have to use keyboard shortcuts , and it doesn't seem to work well with a slim blade track mouse. The core of this program is old and pieced together.And it was not made by anyone who knew anything about making music. Lol ( I kept saying this over and over again cause some of the crazy steps one has to take to get simple stuff done.)So for me it's a great production basic arrangement tool. The modular nature of the system works very well For putting your parts together into and arrangement.Once you get past the madness. But for mixing final arrangements. Cubase is still the one for me. The mixer is how I work tru my music. FL whole mixer set up is like and after thought "oh we need a mixer now".FL Studio is a software drum machine, to me. That's why it's so easy to make "beats" on it. And what it does best. I like it for that but it can't replace Cubase. But they are not made for the same thing. So using both is the going to be the deal.
