That whole restart after a power issue has never been a problem with my three 110s. I have experienced it after a waterchange where I removed enough water to break the seal, but I'm right there to add the water it needs to prime it.
I used Aquaclears for about 30 years, with virtually no issues beyond restarting after power failures or cleaning. Only had 2 other occurrences. After 20-25 years, the sponge in my 110 turned into a semi crunchy brick for which I blame my water (Gh 30/Kh20), and the O ring on one motor crumbled, after the filter sat unused for a couple of years, before setting it up again. I left the hobby a few years, and when I came back in, bought Seachem Tidals, thank the John's reviews. I like the filter, but covered the skimmer with silicone. While the removable compartment is convenient, I still usually remove the whole filter, to drain the detritus out of the main compartment, so it really isn't that much different than the Aquaclear. If/when I purchase another HOB, I'll probably go with the new Aquaclear, mostly due to the much larger media capacity.
Leaving for Daytona tomorrow, in last minute equipment check and filter cleanings I decided to add more sponges to the sicce 300. Then Jason comments hit me. Don’t go too overboard and add to much so it backs up on the HOB. I reconsidered and just added the amount it came with in the box. See you guys This weekend
Nice deep dive into the Aqua Clear filters. My Tidal 110 was not quiet at all like everyone claims and I'm like Jason and don't want to see the water level, so that wasn't the reason. I ended up going with a FX4. I'm considering trying a AC on my 20 high that has guppys but I'd definitely need to use the prefilter. I'm using a Marineland Pro 275 but the homemade prefilter clogs in just a few days, so I think I'd be in the same problem. I like the Marineland just don't like there is not much room for filter media and I'm not using the disposable cartridge scam.
The AC lid rattle has never been a problem for me because I'm one of those guys who just removes the lid. Because the media chamber is so massive, I like to grow pothos in there, so the lid couldn't be there.
Great video as always. I love the info you guys put out and never feel like I can’t trust what you’re saying. As for a video suggestion…I was wondering if you could do a video on air pumps? Appropriate size for tanks, is more air through a sponge filter better, how to tell if you have enough air going through your filters to make sure they are working, etc…? I’ve seen info where they say you need this wattage for this size tank, but wonder if there is more to it than that. Thanks again for all that you guys do, and your ladies, who we all know is the real brains behind the operation. 😂😂
I just purchased the new AC70. I prefer the motor outside the aquarium. It's simpler to maintain my tank and there's also more room for the fish to swim.
I prefer the motor be outside the tank for the same reasons. But, here's something I've seen very LITTLE debate or even mentioned is the noise that is transferred to the fish and other living life in the aquarium. Most motors transfer some level of noise to the tank. How would you do with constant humming noise in your ears from one or more motors day and night???
Broooos. Got a seachem 75 this weekend and set it in my 55. I fcking love it. Easy to set up, even for a goober like me. And adding it in cleared my whole tank in 45min. I love it.
I would say you're 100% right on the flow adjustment. My opinion on that is that I don't care. I don't mess with that whether I'm using one of my AquaClears, or my Marineland or my Tidals. They all run on full flow 100% of the time.
As long as the water level in my tank is high Ive never had an issue with my AC50 not restarting. Media falling from tray…all the time. Considering the new one just for the looks but also considering the Seachem. Previous filter was a Marineland Penguin 200
Previously watched Jason's video on the Aquaclear Filter. I bought an Aquaclear and love it 's performance and It 's absolutely silent. For me having a 38 and 10 gallon tank I prefer the hang on back filters. Love your informative Podcasts.
I've had an AC50 for a couple of years. I have never experienced that issue with the media rising up. I have the sponge in the bottom, a pad to remove phosphates, bio balls on the top and it never moves. I don't think there's enough improvement for me to spend the money to replace it but if mine did konk out, I would definitely get another aqua clear. As long as the water in the aquarium stays at the level when I unplug it, it does restart when I plug it back in. I only need to prime it when I've reduced about 30% doing a water change. Overall, it does a great job.
I kind of liked the way the intake tubes were the same. otherwise that stuff would be in the sponge. You could always cut it off if you wanted. And I’ve bought several to add length. Handy!
Just my opinion, but really appreciate the introduction for this episode compared to the ones in the past. Thank you so much for the great information on the new AC HOB.
At least with the older ones, I’ve found it draws water up better initially if you slide the intake tube to the least water flow. Obviously dry I agree it won’t restart. Also if I do water change where water goes below the I take tube, I remove the intake tube so it doesn’t back syphon the water box. Once the water back up to Intake tube when filling tank, I slide the I take to least water flow and it pulls water back up every time for me.
You guys keep saying suction. HOB for the most part function from syphon. If the water level in the tank is at a proper level no HOB will loose siphon and they will restart.
I had two of the aquaclear hang off the back filters. But never cared for them but they did the job. What would you do like best gravel or sand for your tanks?
I got Tidals, floating plants and pieces of plants make the filter a grinding disaster. Still pumps great but the noise is significantly worse than any Aquaclear rattle. The number of shrimp the Tidal had in the basket was crazy. New ACs on all but one tank which is a custom with wide trim, the Tidal is more pliable and fit trim better but needed to add skimmer filters. For particular tanks the Tidal is great, the new AC that restarts for me tops the Tidal. Two good filters that are more dependent on your ecosystem for choice. The AC prefilter is a little to fine for my liking but that was an easy fix (but having to fix something out of the box is a little annoying). My HOBs are primarily for flossing, CAF-180s do biological. As for water flow adjustment feature, is it closed for better suction on restarts?
I have a new AC70. Its a great filter, if my water level is high it restarts after a power failure. I wish they would have made the water supply ramp a little lower and a smoother ramp. Other than that I love it.
I have Tidals and I have the new Fluval ACs - they are all good for me. I also have sponge filters, cannisters, internal filters, etc. depending on the size of the tank. I think for some people, no matter what evidence you present - including CLEAR evidence - there's a clear emotional and psychological attachment to certain brands or products.
I still contend the self-priming thing has always been an AquaClear issue; not necessarily an issue with all external motor filters. On the 13 tanks I own, two have an AQs, one has an Aqueon (internal motor), and 11 have cheapo Top Fins (my 75 has both a Top Fin and an AQ). After water changes and even after power outages...most recently this year when it was out for hours as they were replacing a utility pole by my house...my experience has been the Top Fins always kick back on. The Aqueon, I'm convinced, will still be running after the nuclear apocalypse. The AQs are absolutely hit or miss. I've even forgotten to unplug the Top Fins during water changes before and they make that horrible noise when the water level gets low...yet they self-primed after the water change was complete. Now, the caveat is they obviously won't self-prime if the compartment is completely dry. But as long as there's still some water in it, they kick on without having to add more water to the compartment. I'm not saying this because I think Top Fins are the most amazing filters...I'm just guessing if those self-prime, other external motor filters must as well. But because AQs are the gold standard and most well-known and well-respected external motor filters, maybe it's largely inferred that if those don't self-prime, then all external motor filters must not.
I've had those doo-hickey's flex bad on the biggest filters. It's not a big deal, I just take them off and use empty cigar tins to balance them. Usually I have backgrounds on my tanks so you don't see the cigar tins at all, but before I used backgrounds it was kind of funny to see the fish swim by a Macanudo billboard!
Love to see a comparison with the title versus the Marineland Pro. I love the Marine lamp Pro because of self-priming and has a lot of room for media. Never had a problem with the Marineland Pro
My 75 gal South American cichlids tank is approaching 2 years old and my fish have slowly grown much larger. My single HOB worked well for a long time but now it can’t keep up. I am looking for a good upgrade. I’m leaning towards composter, but Any suggestions are appreciated.
Question. Does the new AC70 Fit on the Back of a standard 75 gallon aquarium? Because that was a big problem with the Old Aqua Clear 70, it never fit on the back rim of a Aqueon 75 gallon aquarium properly.
Guys I gotta say I did something i never thought I would. Put new guppies in their new tanks. And they look so clean. Just a black background bare bottom. In person it looks so clean and stunning. I really thought I was always going to stuff plants in anywhere I can haha. I did add a floating plant just for nitrates.

My biggest issue with the AC filters is that the sponge they use becomes buoyant and floats to the surface, and everything sitting on top of it gets lifted up and out of the water entirely, including the lid (if youre using it).
@@FishCapadesProductions You'll find you'll need something heavier, like a brick. It has nothing (that I can find) to do with the sponge being dirty or clean. They just always float up. It's quite vexing.

@brucewilson6694 Bruce, are you using all the different models or just the 110s? I don't think it's ever happened to me with my 110s, but my 50s (or maybe they're 70s, I can't recall right now) do it all the time. It's literally done it hours after a complete cleaning, where I've pulled all the media out and rinsed it out.

I hate the skimmer on my Tidals too. I cut a piece of Saran Wrap to lay on top of the simmer slots. The water flow keeps it in place.
