      Honeysuckle I'm so happy to see this series on your channel. I'm not a college student, but I'm a working mother, and some days are so difficult for cooking by the time I get home from work. Would love to be able to let Chef Microwave do the work while I interact with my sweet girl. If you could incorporate more low carb options, that would be great too. My husband is diabetic, so we're always looking for ways to cut down on carbs.

    Definitely lived the dorm life. It is possible to live on $20 worth of meals in a week. I did themed weeks, where each week was a different cuisine. So, that required some planning and writing out my grocery list. Weekly, I'd pick 1-2 main grains, frozen veggies, sometimes canned food, and whatever was on sale for protein. I did have access to a stove, but my roommates that previously roomed at the dorms with no kitchen used the all-in-one slow cookers. These type of slow cookers can sauté, slow cook, steam, and steam bake. Waffle makers are now popular in the dorm rooms too. Way back in the day my brother used those sandwich makers to make ham and cheese sandwiches and pizza pockets. Dorm room cooking has a lot of room for creativity. I'm excited to see what you come up with!

      I don't have acess to a stove rn and I've been using a cheap grill meant mostly as a panini press to act like a mini hot plate. It's great for toasting bread

    hey dzung college studen here. great recipes. what I'd say i have a problem with is the ingredients on hand sometimes cost a lot such as getting ingredients like corn starch in your video and other things that are really unconventional for us living the college life since we only live in these places for short periods of time. can you make a video encompassing your go to ingredients for simple and quick foods? this also includes spices and other extraneous stuff.

    • @honeysuckle
      @honeysuckle  7 років тому +15

      +Big Boss good idea! I can do like a college dorm pantry staple video. I didn't include spices and cornstarch because they're always around in my house. You can get them for like $1 each at target so I will do a staple haul or something helpful like that!! Thanks for watching ☺️

    • @Linda-fd2iu
      @Linda-fd2iu 7 років тому +3

      Big Boss spices can be the break it or make it for a lot of food and much of it can be bought super cheap at target and a little goes a long way besides salt and pepper. If there's a cuisine that you have a preference for, buy some of the spices. They last so long that it's a purchase you make once and it will last a whole semester or close to it.

    • @Linda-fd2iu
      @Linda-fd2iu 7 років тому +3

      Big Boss point is, corn starch is super cheap. Ignore saffron. Get turmeric. Get freshly grated pepper and salt instead so they taste fresher. Etc.

    • @tinas4946
      @tinas4946 7 років тому +9

      Big Boss you could always buy small containers and "borrow" a small amount of spices from Mom and Dad

    Tip! Brown rice comes pre cooked in the freezer section at the grocery store and if you toss in some frozen diced veggies, eggs or tofu and a little soy sauce and black pepper it tastes delicious! It’s my go to microwave dinner. It doesn’t exactly taste like take out fried rice, but it’s way healthier and still super tasty! I also love using the frozen brown rice with some yellow corn and black beans with some cayenne pepper and a little sour cream for a yummy Hispanic feeling dish in the microwave. You can get so creative with frozen brown rice and frozen/ canned veggies

    In college I had access to a kitchen, but I still used a microwave exclusively unless cookies were involved for the floor. Now that I just graduated from a grad program and am super busy with work and different gigs, I still tend to stick with microwave or instant meals, or eating salads since I live in Florida and it's hot enough outside. The risotto sounded so good! I might have to give that a try!

    Love the video idea Dzung! I'm not living in dorms anymore, but still being a student means that microwave meals are often the quickest and easiest for me, so I'm excited to see what else you come up with! I can't be the only one who struggled with balancing a vegetarian diet with my first year dorms; eating cafeteria food meant the options were slim and sometimes unappetizing, so I cooked for myself more frequently than many of my friends. If you were to turn this into a series, I'd be really interested to see a vegetarian main course too! That baked sweet potato looked delicious! :)

    Please make this a series!! Microwave Monday?? Let's face it, Monday is the day of the week that is associated with school the most.

    Dorm food isn't all bad, I should know. I was a cook at Cal, but I really enjoyed your recipes for the microwave. Who would have know, risotto in the microwave!! Can't wait for more videos!

    Would be cool if you did one using ingredients you can find in the cafeteria (like the salad or sub bars and grill stations) and with minimal spices to make custom recipes. Or a sandwich/sub video like you did for bagels and toasts. At a college where meal plans are required if you live on campus, eating there 3x a day 7 days a week can get pretty boring for some. Stoves and Ovens are not available on campus due to a cookie incident a few years ago.

    I live in an apartment so I have all the regular kitchen amenities, but if I can make healthy meals in a microwave to save time, I will do it! Convenience is a big factor that goes into my diet, which isn't a good thing usually.

    So I'm a student but now live in an apartment with a stove and oven, love this though because of the small budget focus! cheap recipes are always super appreciated, extra happy that I live near a trader Joe's now 🤣

    i know some people at my school dorms have rice cookers and/or crockpots as well as microwaves, so maybe incorporating some meals in them would be helpful as well!

    It saves time and energy to put more than one thing in the microwave at once. As long as there's enough space. You could cook the oatmeal and the apples at the same time

    Here in the UK, all our dorms have ovens, grills and stoves as well as a microwave but we also only have roughly 15-20£ to spend on everything for a week. I found this video really useful though!

    I love the idea of a microwave series! My son will be going to college in August. It would be great if he learned to cook something other than HotPockets.
