    Interesting comparison - seemed like there we some focusing issues though on some of the night shots.

      yea - the focus issues are a bit of a bummer but I appreciate the video. thanks.

      Hell yeah, blame me. Just rushed out trying to get some first comparison test done.
      However, i wanted to check that noise level of each. And this turned out to be EPIC!
      I will do a real serious proper profesisional test within the next 10 days.
      Stay tuned :)

      Hah yeah, blame me, sory for that!
      quick and dirty.
      A precise test coming out next 10 days.
      However you see that iso is like 10k times better than on dragon sensors :)

      Thanks man, i will do so the next week :)

    Hello, I own an epic x and my sdi/HDMI ports are not connecting. Red says they don't offer services on my camera anymore, can anyone recommend a site or forum where I can find the parts. Cheers.

      Hello, I would suggest looking through Reduser.net, best regards, Thomas :)

    Since this is the exact same footage looping from 200 ISO to 5000 ISO I suppose that you changed the ISO artificially in post which is not very accurate for such a comparison test.

    • @111BR
      @111BR 5 років тому +3

      Changing the ISO on RED cameras is just metadata. Setting it in camera or in post makes no difference in this case. The native ISO is 800

    • @ThomasSchweighofer_
      @ThomasSchweighofer_  Рік тому

      I did change the ISO on the camera :)

    • @ThomasSchweighofer_
      @ThomasSchweighofer_  Рік тому

      I think you are kind of right, however with changing the iso, you also shift the dynamic range ratio :)

    Cool! But running the Helium with Dragon colorscience is like fueling a gas-car with diesel.... Dragoncolor2 is for the Dragon... Try to make the comp. with REDLOGFILM... .

      Hey Man,
      I totally get what you are saying.
      However i didnt want to do any post on these shots and wanted to let people see what difference there is within these 2 sensors.
      So selecting same settings on different sensors, makes obvious different images. that i wanted to show.
      Since people are mostly like to shoot with these settings applied as they are used to.
      Main goal was to check out noise at lowlight, and thats what you can really see got on this comparison.
      About iso 1280 the dragon is dying, whereas the helium is clean till 3200 without any doubt! :)
      Thanks for watching! :)

      Thomas Schweighofer should at least be Dragoncolor and not DC2... Or from REDLOG.. to be fair.. Nice you took time to make this thow..

      I will do a proper more serious test within the next 10 days. however i just got my hands on it and wanted to see the lowlight difference :)

      Sadly a lot of the issues seen here are only fixable with RedWideGamutRGB which can only be accessed through RedCineX until they do a bit firmware/colorscience update... makes the Epic-W a tough sell at the moment. If I wanted ugly crazy looking colored lights I could just shoot with a Sony camera in non-SLog.

    hey thomas I loved your video it's really interesting but I cant get there cameras yet tho lol I have used the canon 6D for work and it's good overall but I have been getting a lot of projects that require more investment specially commercials music videos and short films so I'm buying a red epic dragon 6k with all it's propper accessories (used) however Idk if its a good or wise investment to buy a red epic dragon on 2017 (USED) , do you think I should get a red scarlet w instead since brand new with all it's accessories is about the same price? -Thanks

    Beautiful camera! I'm wondering, though, if you corrected the images? If so, did you correct them a little differently? I notice a difference when they were side by side. Like, as if the Helium has more green in the sensor than the dragon, but i'm not sure.

    • @ThomasSchweighofer_
      @ThomasSchweighofer_  7 років тому +1

      Nope didnt correct at all.
      However i run dragon color on the dragon sensor and on helium sensor, thats why it looks differnently.

    Hello, cool you share this!!! Give me an advise, i'm now in talks with a guy that have one Red Epic-M Dragon 6k and one Red Epic-W Helium 8k (both with the standard OLPF) for sale. Wich one will be best for me to buy? being my proyect a feature drama history, no FX nor slow motion involved? Tks!!!

    I hope you can answer this question. So is the Dragon Sensor a Full Frame sensor then the Helium is a S35?
    I was looking at the RED Crop factor comparison and it shows the Helium at 8K is bigger than the Dragon. So im so confused on which is which 0_0

    • @ThomasSchweighofer_
      @ThomasSchweighofer_  7 років тому

      Hey, nope it aint.
      Helium is s35 and Dragon is just a few pixels more than s35, but not even close to ff.
      Helium in 8k is like 98% of Dragon in 6k ( which are their widest formats, using the full sensor )
      Nope, Helium is obviously not bigger than Dragon!

    I think that the ideal camera would strike a balance between the two, but I'm leaning slightly towards the dragon. Maybe a WEAPON 8K S35 wou;d be better?

  • @BasVandenbranden
    @BasVandenbranden 7 років тому +1

    Hi Thomas, what lens did you use?
    What is the crop factor between the two camera's? (at the same resolution.)

    • @ThomasSchweighofer_
      @ThomasSchweighofer_  7 років тому

      Hey,
      Rokinon VDSLR 35mm
      You can look it up on red.com they got on each camera and resolution that crop factor calculator
      however the new epic w in 8k is almost identical to the dragon in 6k. dragon in 6k is like 2% wider :)

    • @ThomasSchweighofer_
      @ThomasSchweighofer_  7 років тому

      crop of the 35mm ff lens on the epic w is 1.28!

    • @noahyv
      @noahyv 7 років тому

      Ah, yes confirms my experiences with Rokinons, they are horrible wide open. They look like 1950s lenses and not in a good way. I just see so much softness and aberrations in 4K I can't even imaging how rough they look in 8k. Which Rokinon was this? Maybe it was the same one I tested.

    What lens did you have on the Helium?

  • @MrFreezeMovie
    @MrFreezeMovie 7 років тому +1

    Can't tell for sure- but it looks like the old Dragon sensor is handling highlights slightly better than the new Helium sensor. Obviously the Helium destroys it in low light, but I'd take better highlight performance any day.

    • @ThomasSchweighofer_
      @ThomasSchweighofer_  7 років тому +1

      Its not a too well performed test. I can tell helium is doing better in every aspect.
      I will make a 100% match side by side with all the same gear/setup the next 10 days!

    • @noahyv
      @noahyv 7 років тому

      Dragon is documented to have about an extra stop in the highlights. Helium has to be at least a stop more sensitive to compete, which it might, but few tests seem to set exposure using matched white clip points which tends to be a much more useful test.

      Just for your information, before is too late, RED has confirmed that after July they won't be offering trade in/upgrade service for DSCM to DSCM 2 anymore, and the technical repair service for DSCM will only last until they run out of parts.
      Trying to help all RED DSCM owners as they have not made it official.
      You can text them and check yourself. All the best.
