- TALES FROM NERDVILLE by Joe Bonamassa
TOOLS OF THE TRADE, PART 9
Joe Bonamassa discusses the 1964 Firebird V. For those unfamiliar, Gibson made four different versions of the Firebird in the mid-Sixties. Joe likes Firebird V’s the best, simply because this is the model that Johnny Winter played.

Firebird V, It's HOT!
The bird is the word!
Always wanted one
Great tones! Is it a lead spec Plexi small box Marshall you played through?
Joe, you should see what I did to your Epiphone ‘64 Firebird one “reissue” from 2016, 😄not one piece of original hardware left, new Dunlop frets, highest 2 frets are scalloped, actual Waverly Banjo tuners (mind blowing, so easy to tune, light weight radical ratio)
3 different Seymour Duncan pickups with 4 tones each, off SD PU bezel switches, stacked volume/tone for each and a Tone Pros wrap tail bridge, bone nut Black Pick guard.
AND, I’m getting it PLEK’d after building it 4-5 years ago your $800 base price enabled my custom Firebird dream come true
THANK YOU. I could not buy what you helped me build. Truth is I rarely use all the tones I could get, but it’s the ultimate axe, if I split all 3, I can get strat tones, parallel or series is my preference Because I hate hum, sustain for days, we’ll worth the time and expense 😅
I need this Firebird Joe B
There is a Firebird with an inverted design but I think it is a bit rare
I had one, I was told 64/65 w 3 p-90’s and maestro. Odd thing was, it was a set neck. All others I’ve seen were neck-thru
non reversed ones are set neck
Gawddd damnnnnn!❤🤟🎸
I’m guessing that vibrato system is more cosmetic than functional. I’m thinking about going to one of your shows just to hear a talented musician playing vintage gear.
In my experience (64 SG Jr, 72 Medallion Firebird) those vibratos are extremely functional.
:)
If there's a tuning problem it's probably at the nut, those are pretty good
You’ve got that JW vibrato down sir.
Wow that's a Fender-ish headstock. They couldn't find some othe shape for 6-on-a-side tuners?
Ya it will go down in history as riddled with design flaws
Not really! WHAT does a bird have for a mouth?
Can you find a cooler shape than that?
It's not beat up, it's been loved and used for it's intended purpose. Those aren't scratches or wear spots, they're the guitar"s personality. Kinda like "smile lines" on an elderly gentleman's face!!
I love the Firebird sound. I don't like the giant body and where the neck sits, way over there.
