This videos shows how I harvested several Eastern Red Cedar trees on a large farm in Southwest VA. I had to make my felling cuts high on the trees due to the barb wire fence that was embedded inside most of the timber. When you said Rich Valley Road, I kept trying to see where this is. I grew up in a hollow off Rich Valley road. It used to be called Stout hollow but now it is called Large Hollow. Back then I used to run my 1951 Ford a hundred miles an hour down Rich Valley road. I left that area in 1961 . 20 years in the Navy I never went back home.

Around this part of North America ( Eastern Ontario ) it is the eastern white cedar that grows here.

You can't beat that Red Cedar for beauty and smell. I love it. I have some experience with downing and sawing up cedar into boards. As a matter of fact I dressed my fireplace wall with red cedar boards formed in a herringbone pattern and used a big piece of solid red cedar for the mantle. Beautiful den made from a former carport, made great looking by the cedar.

I miss Paul Harvey. I grew up listening to him. For a little trivia, he went to school with my mother in law at Tulsa Central High School. On cutting the cedar, do you ever just set your logs to the side and custom cut based on what the customer wants? I'm like you on the smaller logs in making posts or 2X material out of them. Especially if you already have a customer in need of them. The larger ones that are solid would make beautiful slabs for benches, tables and maybe even wall art if it has interesting grain pattern. I love it when your son gets involved. They grow up too fast. My baby just turned 38 and has 4 of his own. Now, we get to play with our grandkids.

Here in central Kentucky 1 inch cedar lumber is the fastest selling wood at a sawmill. Folks use it for fences, closets, furniture, etc. Hot item.

I love red cedar. And it tickles me to see Bruno dropping the brush, priceless. As for as how to cut the wood , it depends on how soon you want/need to sell it. I have cut it in veneer strips before for lining closets and also 4/4 and built a coffin ( as a cedar chest for quilts ) for a customer. It's hard for me to get large cedar so 8/4 is pretty uncommon.

I have been collecting and cutting ERC for the last several months. I cut most of the 12 inch and larger ones into live edge slabs, 2 inch and thicker. Anything smaller then 12 inch I cut into 1 inch thick and leave it live edged as well until someone comes to buy it. I can always cut the edge straight later if they want it. Most of mine is sold live edged. I did sell about 120 BF today to a guy that wanted it cut into 1x8 for making chairs. So, I do what they customer wants.
Just put it in a pile until you get an order for it, then cut what they want.
Love the videos, keep them coming. I think I have watched everyone you have made.

Well done nathan. I'd cut it a wide as I could at 4/4 to make wide plank T&G paneling, random widths.

That's a nice haul of cedar! I think that thinner planks would be more desirable and marketable...4/4 and 6/4 for blanket chests, closet paneling, keepsake boxes and display cases/shelves. Either way its cut up, its not going to have issues selling.

I love Eastern Red for projects. Lumber? Not so much. It makes beautiful blanket chests, table tops, jewelry boxes, plaques, carved signs, cabin furniture, etc. I think there would be a better market for 4 quarter & 8 quarter cedar than lumber. IMHO, of course.

i bet the crotches will be very unique. ive turned this wood before and it draws attention because of the color. i also like the aroma when working with it.

I think I'd probably saw dimensioned lumber. That stuff would be good for Paneling closets. Dimensioned stock could easily be milled into t&g paneling.

8/4 slabs brother is the way to go.
Just a couple of falling tips for you to consider for next time... I assume you cut a high stump because there's a good chance of nails and old fence grown into the trunk. Next time try a humboldt cut so the face cut comes out of the high stump, not your log. If reading about felling interests you at all I suggest How to Fell a Tree by Douglas Dent. Keep up the good work.

When hurricane Ivan came through, a buddy of mine with a mill made live edge cedar mantles from the downed trees and sold them on Ebay. He couldn't keep up with the demand. There's not many prettier woods than the red cedar.

I vote lumber and post that's way it gives you a wider customer base for it they may wanna build chest or line a closet or small projects as well that's what I would do. Beautiful stuff though love the smell of cedar keep up the good work bud look forward to watching the dust roll on that stuff

Out of the Woods sure will you could cut you some post and some 4/4 planks and build a beautiful simple bed frame out of it or dry some of the bigger limbs and use them as post
Did you get some of the stumps to? great figure in them plus sectioning it for turners makes for easy extra income. leaving them as is for the turner to decide . I'v sold whole stumps to turners for nice money. john

Inthe Pacific Northwest cedar is popular as boards to make furniature with. I don't know any woman in my family that doesn't have a cedar hope chest
Back in the late '70s and early '80s, I had a sawyer friend who was cutting slabs on a Frick mill and I bought a number of them. There weren't many people doing that at the time so it was unique. With portable band mills all over the place now, my slab collection isn't as valuable as it once was. :)
I use Anchorseal a lot on bowl blanks. It is a fine product. I haven't looked to see if they have competition now, but it just works so I keep using it. Latex paint is too permeable to slow the drying and I had the same experience as you. I never had much problem with checking and splitting with red cedar though.
I agree when I started it was before this big rise of the interest of woodworking/sawmilling, Now it has taken over but will probably move on after some time like most things. I will still be here,

I think I would saw them into 3/8 inch boards and sale them for closet liner. Charge a little less than what you get for a 3/4 inch board and almost double your payday. Great video. R

My dad used to harvest the leaves from cedar and sold to companies. He would make a ton of money. Any one have any idea what type of work this is?

If it were me I'd cut those beautiful logs into boards. A Cherokee friend of mine makes drums and often uses red cedar to glue up the drum circles. He is from NC originally and has lived here in Pa quite a few years. He made my drum about ten years ago out of cypress because the cedar boards we found were knotty with little width. Being a cabinetmaker it isn't easy to find good cedar for projects. But I have seen some very nice slab cedar as well. There in a lumber mill and store near me called Groff and Groff. They have woods from all over the world. They had a 54" x four quarter walnut slab there one time about 13 feet long. Had some nice crotch grain in it too. They deal in all kinds of slab wood as well as regular lumber. I'd like the boards and others the slabs. So why not do half and half? Thanks Kindly! Blessings to You and your Family! DaveyJO in Pa.
I have a very large Cherry tree in my back yard. I am going to have to cut 2 limbs off of it. They are log size limbs. Will Anchorseal work on the live tree to prevent insect infestation and tree damage after I cut the limbs?
Yes and No, It will prevent end checking but it does nothing for insects, but if you take the bark off and elevate it off the ground a few inches that will greatly reduce the chances of bugs/insects,
I would cut a combination of all. 4 quarter, 8 quarter and post

We have red cedar in S. OKLAHOMA, was going to harvest some. How many days do they need to dry. Trimming out windows.
Actually people up here use it green. It’s has a low moisture content. Doesn’t move much they say.

Those Eastern Red Cedar trees act far more like Western Juniper than our Western Red Cedar. Limby, brittle, etc.

I wouldn't do slabs, to soft of a wood for tables. The best use is paneling.
