Why Don't I Sleep In The Bow of My Boat?

  • Sleeping onboard a small boat, there aren't many options. Most people assume I would choose the forward v-berth to sleep in since it is larger and has more area to spread out. Find out why I sleep on the smaller dinette instead.

    I wondered this too, but being a non boat person I assumed it was because the dinette are offered much easier egress than the v-berth incase of an emergency.

      I would lump that reason in with easier to get in and out of ;) Lots of benefits to that one.

    I just hit the thumbs up "like button"..... BUT when I did, it was at 555. Trip did you know that in Thailand, the Thai word for "five" is "ha". So..... over there, when they want to type lol..... they type 555 for "ha ha ha".
    How's that for uselss trival? 555

    Vbirth is better for cold weather. More confined space so its easier to heat with a small heater, be it electric or propane.
    Some people have problems sleeping with light, or worse, with flashing lights. Up top you may have a lot of light pollution, especially if you are near a busy port or dock. the Vbirths often have fewer and smaller windows, so yo may only need to shade or block off 1-3 windows, vs up top where yo may need to block off the entire 360. which can greatly add to set up and break down times for sleeping.
    Set up and break down. There are times where you want to move from a sleeping area to a sitting area because you can't sleep or something. now you can use the captains chair for this but that limits what you can do while sitting.

    Have you considered using an anchor alarm trip to give you peace of mind at night while sleeping just in case you drag anchor?

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  2 роки тому +1

      I have! But don't want to use my batteries all night lol If I were in a spot where I was genuinely concerned, I might turn one on.

    I saw a 18' C-Dory with twin 40 HP 4 strokes. It was a sweet little rig ( with AC)

    • @TripSmith
      @TripSmith  2 роки тому

      Oh nice! Yea... The AC would be cool but probably would only work at a slip with electricity ;)

    You feel the pitching and rolling much more in the v berth than in the middle of the boat. Also with my cuddy it sits lower in the back which mandates that you must sleep with your head up in the bow. Otherwise you wake up feeling very sick

  • @boatingsibbingandwandering3262
    @boatingsibbingandwandering3262 2 роки тому +1

    The V berth can also feel a bit claustrophobic especially if you wake with a start in the night

  • @remyllebeau77

    I can solve your number 1 problem or reason to not be in the v-berth. Install a periscope. Haha
    Install A/C would help with temp, and give some white noise to cover the wave noise. Of course the generator would make plenty of noise as well, but if you put it outside and put a door on the v-berth, it could work.

      Lol I'm trying to keep the workings of the boat simple and not add on addition weight or items that require more maintenance if possible. So if I can be comfortable without those things, I will ;)
