So, the 'Fate of Sixty Years' bit in the music title actually ties into the plot of Touhou 9. It is revealed over the course of the game's plot that there is a 60-year cycle, where every 60 years a calamity happens that results in the death of many people. This game was released in 2005 (with the in-game events meant to take place in real time), with the actual release date being a bit after the 60th anniversary of the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. As for why 60: The number 60 is also the number of nature. It is the product of 3, 4, and 5: the three lights (sun, moon, and stars), four seasons (spring, summer, autumn, and winter), and five phases (fire, water, wood, metal, and earth).
Yes, there has been influence by ZUN in other games. There is one song in Undertale called "Battle Against a True Hero" that has sections that are made to resemble Touhou music. Touhou music and games influenced countless musicians and game developers. In fact, many musicians make entire albums trying to replicate the style of music ZUN has crafted. It is called "Touhou Style". An example of "Touhou Style" album made by someone is "Touhou Garden of Sinners".
I know of Undertale but have not played it other than listening to Megolovania.... So I decided to listen to "Battle Against a True Hero." I will be honest, I wasn't expecting to hear Zunpets in that song...
Oh nice, Touhou ⑨ on 9/9, happy Cirno Day! (Character from the series associated with the number 9 - inside joke). To answer your question, there are many other songs from other games that were inspired by Touhou, one of which is "Battle Against a True Hero" from Undertale. Toby Fox is a huge fan of the series and even recently collaborated with ZUN himself to create an arrangement of U.N. Owen Was Her and the song I mentioned above, titled "U.N. Owen Was Hero". Nostalgia also plays a big factor in my love for the series as well. I remember first hearing the songs in the mid-to-late 2000s via memes and remixes. It's one of my all time favorite series to this day, so it's always a treat to see you react to the different songs. It is completely valid to consider yourself a fan, whether it's through the music, games, manga, characters, fanmade content, etc.
One reason why sometimes Touhou titles are so long is because the title is originally in Japanese, but then the bit after the "~" (tilde) is actually in English, even in the Japanese title. So the title in Japanese is " 六十年目の東方裁判 ~ Fate of Sixty Years ".
Also because ZUN likes to basically convey the entirety of something in a single title and likes puns, also he likes to pick words that sound cool and are vaguely related to what he is actually trying to convey when it comes to english; also typically when ZUN does double names the japanese one is usually longer except for junko and cosd alice weirdly enough, considering the fact the original title had the japanese part at the front instead, also both those themes have a tilde but the entire name is in japanese weirdly
To answer some questions of yours, most boss themes in Touhou are designed to be looped because they have different phases with health bars that take you different amounts of time to clear based on how well you perform. On the other hand, the stages before you get to a boss can sometimes be timed to sync with the music exactly, and this is used particularly noticeably in Touhou 15's stages. Toby Fox was heavily inspired by ZUN and Touhou's music in particular. They've actually collaborated before and have a new collab coming up! Touhou music is strangely relaxing indeed, but I think that's at least partly intended. You get into a super focused, trance-like state when you play where the music helps amp you up without being distracting. In Touhou 13, there's a powered-up state you can enter actually called "Trance" and there are altered versions of every track in the game that play while it's active. They have a much stronger focus on rhythm and harmony while the melody gets simplified or cut out for the few seconds that it lasts.
Originally 9 was going to be the final game in the series, so this would have been the the last boss theme to close the series out. Eiki Shiki YamaXanadu is the Yama that judges the dead.
As far as I know, he just kept coming back to it. Now he's realized Touhou is what he wants to make. He made 9 a multiplayer game, so it could be endlessly replayable. Glad he kept going. @JessesAuditorium
If I recall he originally started making music and had no idea how to share it so he made the games. Zun probably had a few more beats in him to keep it continuing
@@JessesAuditorium Basically he was gonna end the series at 8 (which is why Touhou 8 was much bigger than the previous entries, featuring many modes the other games never had, having different routes in the main campaign and up to 4 pairs of playable characters, each pair's individuals being playables by themselves too, which makes for like 12 different playable options) but then he realized the series was growing super popular and he actually kinda liked making the games. He also wasn't very happy working at Taito, so seeing he had a goldmine in his hands he decided to take the chance and continue the series. After all, who wouldn't choose to keep developing games for a series you enjoy making that is making numbers when the other option is a 9-5 at a corporation that looked down on your doujin work? (Taito apparently had a "no doujin activities" rule or something, though it was fairly well-known ZUN was basically ignoring that rule inside the company apparently, to the point where Taito noticed Touhou's success and tried to buy the series from ZUN. Obviously, he rejected the offer. Thank god. Although ZUN eventually allowed them to make a fan-game called Spell Bubble) Though to be fair, I've read that he had plans to end the series at like 4 different points. Be it Touhou 5 (he continued because he got rejected in 2002 for a comiket as a music circle so he used the extra time until the next chance to make Touhou 6), then that was gonna be the final game but then he decided to make 7 and then 8, this last one as I explained earlier was way bigger than the previous games in terms of content. Then he continued with 9 and 9.5 with which he realized this series, as I said, was something he couldn't let go. Mountain of Faith, the 10th game in the series, was when ZUN finally decided this was going to be his job until he either died or the series' popularity died, because that same year ZUN dropped his job at Taito.
6:45 Zun put remixes in CDs, so the fade out is indeed in the actual music (the original music only loops), the music in the CDs (series like Hifuu, Akyu's Untouched Score and other CDs for the manga) some has an end, some it's fade out like this.
Jesse has finally reached the point of having Touhou be comfort music!!! Shiki Eiki's theme has always been one that feels slow and provokes a sense of... longing? It's one of the few that I could genuinely sleep to. The character herself is a "Yama" (judge) from hell. Her job is to judge souls and decide where will they go. Despite being quite stern and disliked from her veeery long sermons, she is also someone quite caring who, if possible, will try to better someone before they die and end up in hell. Regarding your question, the only song I can actually say that was inspired by ZUN and has what sound like Zunpets is Undertale's Battle Against a True Hero. Toby Fox's admiration to ZUN is well known, and not long ago, both made a collaboration song for a rythm game, where ZUN remixed True Hero and Toby remixed U.N. Owen.
Touhou, cool. This song is pretty neat, but sometimes i feel it's so overly dramatic that i can't take it seriously lol. Cool video as usual. Btw i'm really thankful of this channel you have, i've discovered loads of VGM i ended up loving and feel really passionate about. PD:3704 request.....damn, the list waaaaay longer that i expected
I was skeptical of hearing a remix before the OG but as expected, since ZUN himself made it, it is very faithful to the original. My first time hearing it, and it definitely slaps.
The entire theme around this battle is pretty interesting for me. There really isn't a clear good or bad guy in this battle. You're up against the Yama, the judge of the dead. And even though the whole problem the game is about is pretty much solved by the time you face her, the Yama, being rather concerned and compassionate for the well being of souls, starts lecturing the character you pick (there's several playable characters in this game) and warning them of the dire eternal consequences of their sins. This ends up starting a fight as her words cut too deep and cause them to lash out. So the typical upbeat energy you expect in a touhou final boss song has a bit of a tragic and solemn tone mixed in here, because this thematically shifted to your character fighting against themselves and a force of nature instead of any particular villain or troublemaker.
Eiki Shiki Yamaxanadu... For many, a very critizicing fellow, quick to judge and ready to punish. In reality, a yama who just wants to ensure the best judgement for the living and the dead. As for the title itself, there's a legend that each 60 years, there's such an overflow of souls in the Higan river that make flowers bloom in an unique way (this game was released in 2005; do the math).
Shiki Eiki Yamaxanadu means Shiki is the surname, Eiki is the first name, and Yamaxanadu is the position. Yama means Enma who judges the dead, and xanadu means paradise.
Peak! Fate of Sixty Years really grew on me. Personally, my favorite version of the song is the remix ZUN did for Seasonal Dream Vision. The character's name is Shikieiki, Yamaxanadu. Though some fan translations give her western naming order and write it as Eiki Shiki instead. She is the yama of paradise, which is what Yamaxanadu is supposed to mean. The yama is a religious figure who is the king of hell in Buddhism who judges the dead for rewards and punishments.
Generally speaking, both the stage and boss tracks are made to be long enough to not have to loop, or perhaps the stages and boss fights are timed that way, maybe a bit of both.
This song is actually very well used in touhou fanon. Youll hear it remixed a lot, not as much as the popular ones but still often, especially in an orchestra setting. It is used as powerful and emotional, and can represent the incoming doom.
TBh I am at the point where when I hear fate of sixty years my brain automatically defaults to Kachou Fuugetsu (by Yuuhei Satellite group, sung by Senya) from the memories of phantasm fanmade anime OP
The character's name is Eiki Shiki, Yamaxanadu being her job title. She judges the dead, she either sends them to Hell or Heaven. And yeah, the same thing you say about sleeping to Touhou's songs actually apply for the games itself, as they really help you to concentrate.
Fate of 60 Years is Eiki Shiki's theme. She is the judge of the dead and was almost the final Touhou character ever made. Quyck trivia: -60 years used to be 1 cycle of the world, after which, there would be a "reset" where many people would die. -Touhou 9 was meant to be a finale to the series, hence the name of Eiki's theme. ZUN decided to keep making games after seeing how popular it was. -Eiki has a lecture for each charter to try and help the other characters in-game not go to literal Hell. -Fate of 60 years starts playing when Eiki starts her lecture. The first 30-ish measures are meant to be heard while reading dialogue. The organ fill and ZUNpets come in when you are expected to start the fight.
This remix is great for making Eiki’s theme sound more like a final boss theme, but, I personally think the original fits the more “relaxed” vibe of Touhou 9 and represents Eiki’s personality better. Anyways, great video on my favorite Touhou character’s theme!
Kirby, and obviously Undertale, have some OST similar to Touhou, especially in Undertale And there is also Len'en Project, a game similar to Touhou, with OST inspired by ZUN, but with more ZUNpets, more piano and more violons (it give headache but I like it)
most touhou songs are designed to loop, the fadeout is just arbitrary. touhou 7 are some of my favorites - all of that game has really good tracks, necrofantasia is infamous if you need a specific one. an interesting experience might be to listen to not just the music but also the sound effects from an actual playthrough of the game/boss touhou 6-8 were written for a SC-88Pro, so there's actually videos out there of those games' OSTs played on the original hardware.
Given the theme is for the judge of the dead I’ve always associated this theme with a pretty introspective, life-flashing-before-your-eyes feeling. It’s not a super common tone in Touhou, I find.

If its GensouChronicles talking about Music Theory you know its gonna be lit💯
ZUN's career spanned 29 years, during which time he composed and released between 800 and 900 songs.
His entire discography is actually over a thousand!
