This is *THE* song with which Dead Can Dance cast a spell upon me during my junior year of high school, when "A Passage in Time" came out, and I was fully capable (pre-internet!) of creating imaginary backstories and casting little-known musicians into mythical demi-gods. What world could these bits of magic come from? How could the creators even be from the same planet as me? Gerrard and Perry were like a hit of pure dopamine to all my pleasure receptors. It was miraculous.
This is THE one for me too. A lot of 'close seconds' but this is the one that seduced me immediately, seriously at 0:16 it was already carved into my soul, in fact it felt carved FROM it, like the song I would write if I could write music. And would you believe it was the very first song of theirs I ever heard?
Wipe the sleep from your eyes And embrace the light You have slept now For a thousand years Beneath starless nights And now it's time for you To renounce the old ways And see a new dawn rise..... Just like Ullyses On an open sea On an odyssey Of self discovery
i was first introduced to dead can dance in 5th grade by my older sister i remember putting my headphones on listening to this and cantera over and over again almost as if i was lost in a trance even at a young age it spoke soo much to my soul and still holds a place dear to my heart. Its more than music it takes you to another realm
DCD has been a favorite of mine for over 25 years. Here in Providence, their music is played every time the the Waterfire burns. People love them without even knowing who they are... UA-cam--it's a good thing. One day, I'd like this song to be my doorbell.
This was my introduction to Dead Can Dance and I was completely staggered by this track - as though Frank Sinatra was channelling the ancient ages via an amazing musical sieve. It's an inspirational confection of story and wonderful musical ingredients. Across several decades, I've collected Lisa and Brendan's work and have never tired of what they have composed, both collectively and individually. It was one of the great pleasures of my life to have sat in the concert hall at the Sydney Opera House a couple of years back to witness these wonderful people bring their extraordinary catalogue of music to life.
Love them so terribly much. And I'm very happy to say that both Brendan and Lisa are very sweet, down to earth people! I met them last September and they were both very wonderful.
For some time, i criticized a friend of mine and her life choices. Namely, going out to night clubs every weekend, as i was concerned for her and a bit of a prude. . One day, i saw her dressed before she went out and i was awe struck. This was in the late 80's and she was a classic goth, with the long flowing skirt and matching top that went out to her wrist. Black was everywhere. On her nails. On her lips. In her teased out hair. Her choker, b;lack. I did not make a sound... i was worried that i would ruin the moment. I asked if this is what she wore to the clubs and if others wore similar clothing to her. She smiled and nodded her head. So, i asked if she would model it for me and if i could take some B&W pictures of her. Again, she nodded. The day came and i picked her up. She handed me a mix tape and said she had made it for me. Dead Can Dance was on this tape, along with other nicely, thought out choices. From Enya to The Sisters of Mercy and Bauhaus. From the Smiths to Siouxsie and the Banshees. The Birthday Party to Christian Death and Sex Gang Children. And from that day, it would be me who would go out and dance in the night. From Thursdays to Sunday and sometimes a few other days sprinkled through out the week. The Bank. The Batcave. All over the NJ/NYC area. And ever since then, i have been apart of that life i was so against in my youth...
I discovered them while in my first semester at college. I remember laying down on the campus quad at Pratt Institute and staring at the beautiful red mix Brooklyn clay bricks and imagining my life in the future. It was a epiphany that had prophetic tentacles that would shape the rest of my life and is still doing so to this day. That was 30 years ago. I love this group and its two main driving forces, Perry and Gerrard. I have seen them several times in concerts and own all their albums and still I dreams of Ulysses. Talent without end for this amazing duo.
Le temps nefaceras jamais ce qui est fondamentalement excellent toujours un grand plaisir d'écoute même après toutes ces années passées. C'est et cela restera comme au premier jour. Grand Respect.
i randomly came across these guys at 16 and i was stoned and i heard Severance, I got totally lost in the music and here i am 10 years later still loving the music no longer doing drugs just drinking but what a magical time it was when i discovered them!
1992 Preston Street,Baltimore makes my insides quiver to remember the candle light playing on the walls & shadows making their grand appearance as we danced ourselves into an hypnotic oblivion. Memories of Tom weaving in & out my conscience will forever tiptoe throw the words and notes of Ulysses. i miss you my soul-mate.
Each note rising like shadows falling like time all in tune within the arms of our love! I will never let go of your hand, i will dance with you for a thousand years!
This song, especially the music reminds me of a haunted carnival. Something like the 1962 movie Carnival of Souls. Very eerie but very good to listen late at night. One of my all time favorites by DCD.
Trance enduring mesmerising and beautiful. One of DCD’s best tracks in all their albums. Seen them once play live, can’t wait for the next time; London 2019
This song brings fond memories of my youth! I'm glad I found it and I can listen to it to anytime and anywhere I please! It was a gift from two old friends who love music and shared their experience with me. Love this track!
Amazing. I still can't believe I get to meet these wonderful musicians in only a couple short months. I don't even have a clue what to ask Brendan. He's so talented.
These people are ridiculously beautiful. They being insanely talented is just the unfair cherry on top. Must be a hell of a thing to be a demigod amongst the masses.
Saw Dead Can Dance at the Sydney Opera House last night. It was totally amazing. What a privilege to see them live, their first tour here in 20 years. Sooo beautiful. Lisa is like a goddess!!!!!
First got introduced to DCD (Aion) in 1991 in early 20s by an old childhood friend when we were in an interesting state of mind late one night. I've loved their music ever since.
This This satisfies my ears it's like magic, I had never felt this with this beautiful melody, it makes me fly and take out all the bad, brings me peace
Je suis hyper fan de ce groupe découvert totalement par hasard dans la chambre de ma sœur alors que j avais 11 ans....une petite cassette, que j ecoutais en boucle. C etait l album serpent egg. Je suis fasciné par ce groupe. Tout et genial. Je vous embrasse tous....surtout les filles. Où ça ? La où elle ont mal.
I remember like it was yesterday, almost Christmas time...2 years from the last release ....wondering....then....NEW LP FROM DEAD CAN DANCE! then... repeat the first part over again....2 years later! LOVE THIS SONG "DEAD CAN DANCE"!
Drove from Memphis to see them...absolutely amazing. Got some great pictures. The opening with the gentleman playing the Hahn? was incredible too. 3 encores? Wow.
i mainly just listen to GODSMACK, a few metalcore bands, and 2 death metal bands... so this is WAAAAAAAAAY different from what im used to.... but i think i can dig it. its a nice change of pace. its... calming. I mean, i was INCREDIBLY pissed off about something before i listened to this... and now im really chill. thank you so much for posting this. this song literally stopped me from doing something stupid that could have landed me in jail.
When I first heard this I thought of figures dancing in a stone circle to two musicians, one with a lyre, the other with a hurdy-gurdy. Then I remembered the "Auld Wives Lift" a group of three masses of millstone grit, on Craigmaddie Muir, North of Glasgow and Milngavie, on which were carved nine Celtic Heads. I thought of the people dancing around the stones while the lyre player and the hurdy-gurdy player were on top....
"Colbert Questionaire?" Yea, this would be the song I would choose... Many years ago, some people believed in me and let me paint a mural for them. This song was on repeat... Profound aura/lyrics/path

I keep asking the same question every time I hear this. How beautifully you have put it.
This is just truly the most magnificent music ever created. Can N E V E R tire of it.
dead can dance and cocteau twins are the soundtracks of my life.......i am sure you guys know what i mean........
Indeed I do !
Life is so much richer with good music. Every DCD song takes me somewhere else, What more can you ask for.
Wipe the sleep from your eyes
And embrace the light
You have slept now
For a thousand years
Beneath starless nights
And now it's time for you
To renounce the old ways
And see a new dawn rise.....
Just like Ullyses
On an open sea
On an odyssey
Of self discovery

First time I listened to them I didn't care for them but as I'm older now I definitely appreciate them
This music is amongst the most powerful I've ever come across, I heard cantara when I was 18, i'm a lot older now and it's still incredibly powerful,
I guess I'm quite off topic but does anybody know a good site to watch new movies online ?

@Nash Houston Thank you, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) Appreciate it!!

Another one of my all time favourite masterpiece from DCD....love these guys soooo much. xxx
This song, especially the music reminds me of a haunted carnival. Something like the 1962 movie Carnival of Souls. Very eerie but very good to listen late at night. One of my all time favorites by DCD.
When the dancy little synths come in at 0:16 I immediately pictured giant spiders entering a ballroom.
Trance enduring mesmerising and beautiful. One of DCD’s best tracks in all their albums. Seen them once play live, can’t wait for the next time; London 2019
This is my favorite song from The Serpent's Egg, their music is so deep and hypnotic.
I'm in love with everything by Dead Can Dance since the beginning
While listening to this song, I too have become Ulysses and I am on my own odyssey of self-discovery...Subline music. My eyes have been opened.
The first half of this piece is like a transcendental experience

Amazing. I still can't believe I get to meet these wonderful musicians in only a couple short months. I don't even have a clue what to ask Brendan. He's so talented.
My canary loves this track.
The best DCD SONG.
Incredible song.
You know I listen to plenty of “normal” music but as soon as someone asks me to play a song my inner troll wants to put on something like this
Brendan Perry's vocals are brilliant. Its songs like this that make me realise DCD were way ahead of their time.
And timeless...
Brendan has a beautiful voice
Such a timeless classic. Brilliance.

John Francis Dooley: wipe the sleep from your eyes, and embrace the light! You have slept now for a thousand years, beneath starless nights.
