20+ years ago, I was a Flowmaster junkie. I thought they sounded the best. But now, you can't beat Borla. They flow better and sound a ton better. Good switch.
They both sound good. The flowmasters have a hollow ever so slight tinny sound up the rpm range that mimics muscle cars of the old days like someone turn the treble all the way up. The Pro XS sounds cleaner and more muscular, no tinny sound to it at all definitely a bit more muffled like someone turned the treble down. Personally for me I'd go with the Pro XS, it's the sound I like. Clean, mean muscular, bold and no tinniness. Plus it's not loud but very noticeable, yeah that's me all the way. Good job Borla!
I loved the flows, but they were old and when I shook the mufflers, rust fell out. They had to go and I wanted to try something different. I’m happy with it
This video is just what I needed. I’ve got 2 Borla CrateMuffler s type and 2 resonators to install. Struggling to find the mid pipe from shortys. Can’t decide between X or H. But yeah these old flowmaster are donezo.
I know. They make nice looking additions to my basement collection. One day I’ll toss some good tires on and run them, been debating widening 2 for the rear
Sound test at 60 to 70 mph would have been good also. Did you cut the factory coil cover for the strut tower brace? Have you SN-95 hydro boost, or just using it's power steering pump reservoir? Or, do I need my glasses checked?
The problem with the flowmasters is the drone inside the cabin at 1800-2000 rpm, crusing speed. This is where other exhaust makers have done a better job. Borla, magnaflow, steeda etc. Of course it's the flowmaster chambered muffler design that makes that great sound. Cabin drone is the price you pay to have it.
I have Recaro's and I don't want to mess up the driver's seat when I'm getting in and out of the car a lot while working on it, in case i leave a tool in my back pocket. So in the winter, i swap in a junk SN95 seat so I don't have to worry about damaging the Recaro. I swap the good seat back in when winter projects are over and I'm ready to drive.
Put a few miles on it after the install and this video. It definitely eliminated that 2k rpm drone. Sounds tame until you get on it which is exactly what I was going for. I love how it sounds at high rpm!
The entire combo was so new to me I didn’t really have time to get a feel for it. I put maybe 20 miles on the new engine with the flows before I swapped. It rips but I couldn’t tell you if I gained power or not. Going to tune it and go hit a dyno. I didn’t get weight info. Sorry
@Mustang5L5 Thank you. I was just wondering. I have a 67 Buick Special Deluxe with the factory odd fire V6. I have had about three systems installed on it. I started small with the factory single exhaust and glass pack. Later, I went to straight duals, and it was very loud on the California freeways. I had Flowmaster 40s installed. This last time, I had all new pipes installed with the factory correct hangers. I did keep the mufflers, and it was day and night difference in power. With the old pipes, it ran 18s. I wasn't thinking of a land speed record with the V6 and 2 speed trans. It was fun to run it anyway just to see. It was a good 50 miles to LACR from home in SoCal. People wonder what it is if anything and liked to watch it run.
Definitely not as much. With the Flow masters you could find the right RPM and it just resonated in the interior. The Borla are nowhere near the level of drone that the flows have, but there is a little. If you get on the throttle, they are still loud mufflers. Overall it's just a huge reduction in the level of drone, and a much more quieter idle and when cruising around down being gentle on the gas. WOT sounds amazing.
Nice video, cleanest underbody Ford mustang I have seen so far.

Im not into Flowmaster as much as I used to be, but in this video they sound better than the Borla XS. I like the sound of Borla XR1 much better
@edjackson4389 I had a buddy with a built Trans Am that had the Borla XR1 mufflers and it sounded great.
Sounds good. My neighbor doesn’t like my flowmaster outlaw. Maybe he will like some black widow neighborhaters 😊

The flows sound cleaner to me classic mustang sound
Awesome sounding and looking mustang 👍
Well they both sounded good, I actually kinda like the flowmaster better.

The car looks and sounds great Mike, needs the "best rims ever" on there though (98 cobra). Love the factory stereo...
I know. They make nice looking additions to my basement collection. One day I’ll toss some good tires on and run them, been debating widening 2 for the rear
Thanks for putting together this video... have been thinking about making this change as well.
Definitely like that classic Flowmaster sound on the Mustang 5.0s but man those Borlas sound mean.
Sound test at 60 to 70 mph would have been good also. Did you cut the factory coil cover for the strut tower brace? Have you SN-95 hydro boost, or just using it's power steering pump reservoir? Or, do I need my glasses checked?
It would have been ideal but I didn’t have that clip with the flowmasters. Yes, I have a 99-04 hydroboost setup in there
The problem with the flowmasters is the drone inside the cabin at 1800-2000 rpm, crusing speed.

@@ricko3242 agree 100%. I certainly didn’t hate the Flowmasters. I just got tired of the drone. Still rank up there as a great sounding exhaust IMHO.
Nice to put a face with moniker, since I follow you on StangNet!
Yeah, figure I throw myself on camera one of these times.
Exhaust sounds great but why do you have cats on your car? Do you have to go through emissions?
I went with MAC mufflers. Love em!
What’s with the different seats?
I have Recaro's and I don't want to mess up the driver's seat when I'm getting in and out of the car a lot while working on it, in case i leave a tool in my back pocket. Sounds like it just eliminated the drone. Nice

DUDE! you have to a video on the rearview mirror
That’s a good idea. I will do one.
Still on my to-do list...don't worry it's coming
Love my Flowmasters, mufflers don't make car sound good, it's horsepower that makes them sound good, I can put stock mufflers on mine & it sound great
Did you notice any power gain from the Flowmaster's to Borla mufflers. How about weight.
The entire combo was so new to me I didn’t really have time to get a feel for it. I put maybe 20 miles on the new engine with the flows before I swapped. It rips but I couldn’t tell you if I gained power or not. Going to tune it and go hit a dyno.

Hi. Were you able to measure the length of borla case? Is it really 14inches?
Hi, I measured and yes, the case of the muffler is exactly 14” long. That doesn’t include the inlet/outlet stubs.
is the borla pro xs a straight through design? or is it chambered?
It's a straight through design
Looking at the same muffler I can’t stand the drone I have now.
What mufflers are you currently running?
how is the car drone wise? i know the flowmasters drone like a bitch. what about the borla?

awesome thanks. looking for something to put on our 70 dart.
