His video response can easily just be damage control, there are still some shady and unclear things, I mean, he can actually have the opinion he wants (because even if you like his perspective or not, we have that right), but as someone speaking in a public platform he must be more careful with his words. And whatever posture you have must always be stated with respect and assertiveness (as possible). I am not saying that his response is false, but definitely I am not saying is true either, because nobody has a way to know that except for him. Thank you! That's a good point actually, like 99% of all JRPG stories are about accepting people who are different, overcoming racism and the power of friendship between people who are vastly different. It's a shame that those lessons go over some people's heads.

Anyone who says "I used to respect the LGBT community" and follows up with "but they're so pushy and annoying / loud / in your face" is automatically written off in my mind as a liar. They've never respected us, they've probably never even talked to us, they saw us existing, didn't like it and used our existing as proof that we're turning the frogs gay or something.

I always look forward to your videos and especially love your RPG news videos each week because you compile things that I usually don't have time to read throughout the week. I'd like to say that I think the way you handled yourself in this video shows you have a lot of class and I imagine it may have been an exercise of enormous restraint. It's unfair you even have to make this video and show this level of maturity turning the other cheek. To sum up my feelings, you have my full support and I'll follow your cue by not typing out my personal opinion of Erick.

This reminds me of a colleague I used to share an office with. We both taught the same subject, and we had overlap in classes as well as office hours. She was a very sweet old lady, had the charm that only a certain type of grandma has, and really seemed to go out of her way to help her students. Most of them. Every now and then she would seem a little curt in her responses, as if she wanted the conversation to end quickly. At the time, I assumed this either had to do with off days (we all have them), or perhaps there was an issue with the student's work/conduct that warranted such a behavior. Then, on a slow day in Spring when we had just been talking about our families, she saw a news article headline about the conflict in Syria and started talking about Arabic students, specifically Muslims. One was right outside of the door, but positioned so that she wasn't in view of my colleague. Turns out some grandmas are actually really quite racist. The Arabic student left in the middle of the rant, as I was trying to get my colleague to stop talking. I really hope she didn't overhear what was being said, but I think it's far more likely she did. Moving forward, I started paying attention to the students my colleague was helpful with: young White men. Every other category of student received the curt responses. My opinion of her completely changed, and I began to feel gross sharing a space with her. I really regret that I didn't confront her the day she made those remarks about Muslim students. Sometimes people will show you who they really are. When they do, believe them. If you are in a position to, speak out against hate. I'm sorry you experienced what appears to be clear-cut discrimination, David. You are not a plague. The LGBTQ+ community is not a plague. You're a wonderful person who also makes great content. Keep fighting the good fight, friend.
Just want to say that watching your vids has been a big help to me in the past few months. They're honest, straightforward, and clearly come from genuine passion. It's helped me shake off hangups about my own content and appreciate how great it is to have a platform to talk about the things you care about. Keep up the good work. Those clips weren't from responses from Eric they were seperate videos one even a stream bit I do agree Eric shouldn't have ignored the requests but it's his right too regardless of his own bigotry

Erick sees this small vocal and annoying part of the LGBTQ+ community(what group doesn't have those people?) and assumes it speaks for everyone, assuming the worst about others and treating them as such without even talking to anyone properly. You know, to see people are different and have a wide and varied set of opinions. Makes me lose almost all respect for the man. David you're awesome, just keep being you, and honestly your mature reaction to this has gained more of my respect, along with the fact you always keep things 100% honest. Over the years I've gone from casually watching a video or two, to subscribing, to hitting the bell, and you're up there at this point as one of my favorites.
To be fair, I think Erick was making a commentary on the segment of the community that subscribes to Cancel Culture as opposed to the community in its entirety

I've also definitely 100% learned how to be a more confident gay man, embracing some of the feminine elements of the way I speak or even hand movements - because I got to see a confident, INCREDIBLY INTELLIGENT, gorgeous, and comfortable af gay man living his best fucking life - so thank you thank you thank you for that. Won't bore you with my context/background - but it means the world to me that you are out here, making these videos, being unapologetic about your sexuality and treating it like "just another trait" within you - you are an icon, a legend, and I hope tons of gay (straight, and everything else in between) kids and teens all over the world find this channel (read: safe space). I found as an adult and you feel like the cool af friendly as all hell big brother I wish I had growing up.
I was a long time subscribed to Erick Landon's channel, but have recently seen some things in some of his videos that were... concerning (main thing that comes to mind was him playing the victim and using all the textbook far right "cancel culture" talking points because YT demonitized one of his videos. As if that's not something that every content creator on this site deals with regularly). It's a bummer to find this out but not super surprising. Pretty sad that there are still people who are so insecure about themselves and their own sexuality that they're threatened by anyone who's different than them. I can't imagine living that way. Hi David, I know this is a really old video now but I'm newer to your channel and I've been going through your older content and I found this video. I am always searching for JRPG content on UA-cam and years and years back I found Erick's channel and something about him always felt off; as a lesbian, I got the distinct impression from some of his offhand remarks that 'people like me' weren't welcome and so I stopped watching his videos and never looked back. I mention my sexuality because god do I ever understand what homophobia feels like, what just living as an LGBTQ+ person feels like, and I just wanted to say that I really admire you for just being on UA-cam, making great gaming content and being unapologetically yourself while doing it. You're an asset to the LGBTQ+ community and I really mean that. You also handled the situation with a lot of grace and I admire that. Erick probably views David as competition as there have been a number of times that Erick has off-handedly remarked that he won't do a "top ___" whatever list because there is another UA-camr who has already done something similar. Also the fact that David had repeatedly poked holes in Chrono Cross which is Erick's favorite game. I know both of those sound petty, but I think this whole thing is about being petty. I like both of their content so I'm disappointed that there won't be a collaboration coming soon.

I definitely related more to your content and friendly demeanor but I enjoy learning anything new about JRPGs so I will look for hidden gems or tips from any source. I learned a long time ago though that there are plenty of people that will accept me for who I am and anyone that doesn’t, won’t occupy any space in my mind or be given any of my time. It really is sad that people like Eric Landon are so against this sort of thing. There has been a big movement in recent years to become more accepting of people like David, and I personally think it's a good thing. I would rather have a person in my life who I know I can get along with, regardless rather or not I'm on the same page with that person in everything, because the simple fact is that no two people are exactly alike. Because of this, things like LGBT and whatnot are less important to me than rather or not they seem like they are good people, and it's a damn shame that there are still people out there who still have such negative feelings because of that alone

I wonder if he'd feel differently if JRPGs themselves had better representation of LGBTQ+ people than it historically has? Pretty sad that a person's view of society would come down entirely to how the video games that person plays portrays marginalized people, but look who we're talking about here.
I love your channel. As a gay man of a similar age it’s awesome to have someone on UA-cam that plays the games I grew up with and can also relate to those games in the way that I did. Your videos are terrific and I’m really grateful I found your channel.
you should collab with Dukey03, he's a very small UA-camr who's pretty funny and speaks from the heart in his videos. he mostly does top 10 videos related to jrpgs. thank you for your honest look at this situation David!

Well, that's just sad. You built bridges, and someone else burned them down. Let them deal with the ashes. It's especially disheartening when that second clip gives possible insight into why he did so... I've watched a few of Landon's videos in the past (wouldn't say I'm a fan or anything), but seeing that clip was frustrating. I definitely don't plan on going back. I can separate art from the artist, but only feel the need when I'm trying to analyze something on a technical level. If I'm going purely on what I find interesting or entertaining, the "who" of the situation is important to me. If Lady Pelvic is up for it, she'd be a perfect choice for a collab video, in my opinion. The only issue I could see arising is trying to determine who is prettier in the vid. She will give you some fierce competition in that regard. You've gotten this far by doing what you think is right for your channel, and the result is something awesome. I'm confident in your ability to keep it up, despite these gut-punches. Go get 'em.
To me, all that matters is the content. Everyone is free to sleep with or identify as whoever they like. As long as the content is good, I am there. And you are incredibly well versed in this subject. Even for someone like me, who has been playing Fan translations of JRPGs since I was 12 (I am now 35), this channel is very interesting. It has helped me discover some stuff I've missed, so thanks for that. Take care of yourself. :)

ugh that's really disappointing to hear this about Erik, thanks for talking about this David! I see that Erik has made a response to this and I'm sure its full of apologies and "lessons learned" but I won't be able to believe it's from a genuine place and not just because this affects his channel. That last clip of his is really damning, not only does he condemn the LGBT community but adds a big red flag with that "I'm straight btw" at the end as if he'd view a misunderstanding of being LGBT as some kind of insult.

I'm so sorry. It's always uncomfortable to discover someone is so judgmental and disrespectful like that. The saddest part is, if he took you up on your offer, maybe he could have gotten to know you as a person and reconsider his attitude toward a group of people he's never met. Just keep being your kind, fun, and fabulous self, he's the one who is missing out. Hopefully someday he realizes that being so closed-minded and ignorant toward lgbt people does nothing for anyone, except make himself more bitter and unpleasant to be around.

I remember a similar experience I had in middle school when I used to be more outwardly feminine and appeared to be homosexual, a religious kid was in a group with me picked by the teacher and I introduced myself to the group in person and the other members were receptive except the kid. I asked him after class if I did something to him that hurt or offended him, and all he said was “I don’t like gay people” then left. In the bus ride home, I really felt conflicted and a bit sad because I was always so nice to everyone that I guess I just expected everyone to be nice back and like me. I now understand that it was ok that someone didn’t like me, because I know plenty of people that do respect me regardless of what I am or not. Don’t let that one negative experience affect you David. You have a whole community supporting you that does not care at all how you identify or who you sleep with. Much love buddy ❤️

Hi David, maybe my reaction is way overdue on this video but right now is the first time I saw it. I could feel your emotions while talking. All you said make sense to me. Humans are not driven by choices of sex preferences, but by their personality, the way they feel, the way they think. Many peoply are losing their way because they are constantly looking at others instead of trying to be a better person. I could also feel you sincerity in your words and I do commend you for sharing all this publicly. Again David, it is not about Straight or Gay, that does not define people, people are defined by their feelings and words, but most important by their acts.
Damn, that’s rather rough for you to endure that, David. Now that you know why, just know that you did a good job by existing and make interesting content that are top 10 or playthroughs (or walkthroughs for guides to those that play JRPGs for the first time and needed help.) You make great content and have a huge amount of knowledge and appreciation of games I both love and want to know more about. I’m 37 and it’s starting to get hard to find people who remember the excitement of a new 8 or 16 bit rpg so that’s what I watch your videos for and I’d say you deliver on that content extremely well consistently. His video response can easily just be damage control, there are still some shady and unclear things, I mean, he can actually have the opinion he wants (because even if you like his perspective or not, we have that right), but as someone speaking in a public platform he must be more careful with his words. And whatever posture you have must always be stated with respect and assertiveness (as possible).
I am not saying that his response is false, but definitely I am not saying is true either, because nobody has a way to know that except for him.
Personally, I don't feel the video is entirely sincere, I fell it forced, but that is just my perspective, he is the only one who knows his truth and inner feelings, but there is a Big Fact in this, his words were clumsily chosen, for completely.

Thank you! That's a good point actually, like 99% of all JRPG stories are about accepting people who are different, overcoming racism and the power of friendship between people who are vastly different. It's a shame that those lessons go over some people's heads.

I always look forward to your videos and especially love your RPG news videos each week because you compile things that I usually don't have time to read throughout the week. This reminds me of a colleague I used to share an office with. We both taught the same subject, and we had overlap in classes as well as office hours. She was a very sweet old lady, had the charm that only a certain type of grandma has, and really seemed to go out of her way to help her students.
Most of them.
Every now and then she would seem a little curt in her responses, as if she wanted the conversation to end quickly. At the time, I assumed this either had to do with off days (we all have them), or perhaps there was an issue with the student's work/conduct that warranted such a behavior.
Then, on a slow day in Spring when we had just been talking about our families, she saw a news article headline about the conflict in Syria and started talking about Arabic students, specifically Muslims. One was right outside of the door, but positioned so that she wasn't in view of my colleague.
Turns out some grandmas are actually really quite racist.
The Arabic student left in the middle of the rant, as I was trying to get my colleague to stop talking. I really hope she didn't overhear what was being said, but I think it's far more likely she did.
Moving forward, I started paying attention to the students my colleague was helpful with: young White men. Every other category of student received the curt responses. My opinion of her completely changed, and I began to feel gross sharing a space with her. I really regret that I didn't confront her the day she made those remarks about Muslim students.
Sometimes people will show you who they really are. When they do, believe them. If you are in a position to, speak out against hate.
I'm sorry you experienced what appears to be clear-cut discrimination, David. You are not a plague. The LGBTQ+ community is not a plague. You're a wonderful person who also makes great content. Keep fighting the good fight, friend.

Just want to say that watching your vids has been a big help to me in the past few months. They're honest, straightforward, and clearly come from genuine passion. Those clips weren't from responses from Eric they were seperate videos one even a stream bit I do agree Eric shouldn't have ignored the requests but it's his right too regardless of his own bigotry

Erick sees this small vocal and annoying part of the LGBTQ+ community(what group doesn't have those people?) and assumes it speaks for everyone, assuming the worst about others and treating them as such without even talking to anyone properly. You know, to see people are different and have a wide and varied set of opinions. Makes me lose almost all respect for the man.
David you're awesome, just keep being you, and honestly your mature reaction to this has gained more of my respect, along with the fact you always keep things 100% honest. Over the years I've gone from casually watching a video or two, to subscribing, to hitting the bell, and you're up there at this point as one of my favorites.

This is disconcerting to hear since I am a fan of both your and Erick's channel. Thank you for making this video and being open to talk about it. I'd like to see a response from Erick because I don't want to support someone who holds that kind of view. I think the gaming community needs to be more inclusive so it's sad to hear about something like this.

Won't bore you with my context/background - but it means the world to me that you are out here, making these videos, being unapologetic about your sexuality and treating it like "just another trait" within you - you are an icon, a legend, and I hope tons of gay (straight, and everything else in between) kids and teens all over the world find this channel (read: safe space). I found as an adult and you feel like the cool af friendly as all hell big brother I wish I had growing up.
I was a long time subscribed to Erick Landon's channel, but have recently seen some things in some of his videos that were... concerning (main thing that comes to mind was him playing the victim and using all the textbook far right "cancel culture" talking points because YT demonitized one of his videos. As if that's not something that every content creator on this site deals with regularly). It's a bummer to find this out but not super surprising.
Pretty sad that there are still people who are so insecure about themselves and their own sexuality that they're threatened by anyone who's different than them. I can't imagine living that way. I've unsubscribed from his channel and subscribed to yours. Look forward to diving into your content!

Hi David, I know this is a really old video now but I'm newer to your channel and I've been going through your older content and I found this video.
I am always searching for JRPG content on UA-cam and years and years back I found Erick's channel and something about him always felt off; as a lesbian, I got the distinct impression from some of his offhand remarks that 'people like me' weren't welcome and so I stopped watching his videos and never looked back.
I mention my sexuality because god do I ever understand what homophobia feels like, what just living as an LGBTQ+ person feels like, and I just wanted to say that I really admire you for just being on UA-cam, making great gaming content and being unapologetically yourself while doing it. You're an asset to the LGBTQ+ community and I really mean that. You also handled the situation with a lot of grace and I admire that.

Erick probably views David as competition as there have been a number of times that Erick has off-handedly remarked that he won't do a "top ___" whatever list because there is another UA-camr who has already done something similar. Also the fact that David had repeatedly poked holes in Chrono Cross which is Erick's favorite game. I know both of those sound petty, but I think this whole thing is about being petty. I like both of their content so I'm disappointed that there won't be a collaboration coming soon.

I definitely related more to your content and friendly demeanor but I enjoy learning anything new about JRPGs so I will look for hidden gems or tips from any source. I learned a long time ago though that there are plenty of people that will accept me for who I am and anyone that doesn’t, won’t occupy any space in my mind or be given any of my time. It really is sad that people like Eric Landon are so against this sort of thing. There has been a big movement in recent years to become more accepting of people like David, and I personally think it's a good thing. I would rather have a person in my life who I know I can get along with, regardless rather or not I'm on the same page with that person in everything, because the simple fact is that no two people are exactly alike. Because of this, things like LGBT and whatnot are less important to me than rather or not they seem like they are good people, and it's a damn shame that there are still people out there who still have such negative feelings because of that alone

Well, that's just sad. You built bridges, and someone else burned them down. Let them deal with the ashes. It's especially disheartening when that second clip gives possible insight into why he did so... I've watched a few of Landon's videos in the past (wouldn't say I'm a fan or anything), but seeing that clip was frustrating. I definitely don't plan on going back. I can separate art from the artist, but only feel the need when I'm trying to analyze something on a technical level. If I'm going purely on what I find interesting or entertaining, the "who" of the situation is important to me.
If Lady Pelvic is up for it, she'd be a perfect choice for a collab video, in my opinion. The only issue I could see arising is trying to determine who is prettier in the vid. She will give you some fierce competition in that regard.
You've gotten this far by doing what you think is right for your channel, and the result is something awesome. I'm confident in your ability to keep it up, despite these gut-punches. Go get 'em.

I'm so sorry. It's always uncomfortable to discover someone is so judgmental and disrespectful like that. The saddest part is, if he took you up on your offer, maybe he could have gotten to know you as a person and reconsider his attitude toward a group of people he's never met. Just keep being your kind, fun, and fabulous self, he's the one who is missing out. I remember a similar experience I had in middle school when I used to be more outwardly feminine and appeared to be homosexual, a religious kid was in a group with me picked by the teacher and I introduced myself to the group in person and the other members were receptive except the kid. I asked him after class if I did something to him that hurt or offended him, and all he said was “I don’t like gay people” then left. In the bus ride home, I really felt conflicted and a bit sad because I was always so nice to everyone that I guess I just expected everyone to be nice back and like me. I now understand that it was ok that someone didn’t like me, because I know plenty of people that do respect me regardless of what I am or not. Don’t let that one negative experience affect you David. You have a whole community supporting you that does not care at all how you identify or who you sleep with. Much love buddy ❤️

Hi David, maybe my reaction is way overdue on this video but right now is the first time I saw it. I could feel your emotions while talking. All you said make sense to me. Humans are not driven by choices of sex preferences, but by their personality, the way they feel, the way they think. Many peoply are losing their way because they are constantly looking at others instead of trying to be a better person. I could also feel you sincerity in your words and I do commend you for sharing all this publicly. Again David, it is not about Straight or Gay, that does not define people, people are defined by their feelings and words, but most important by their acts.
Damn, that’s rather rough for you to endure that, David. Now that you know why, just know that you did a good job by existing and make interesting content that are top 10 or playthroughs (or walkthroughs for guides to those that play JRPGs for the first time and needed help.)

100% straight guy here and I LOVE your videos. You're always honnest and that's what I like about you. What's important for me is not by which humans you're attracted, but by which kind of games. :-) And I have a ton of games I like in common with you, trust me! It's really fun to hear you about older and newer games, and indies too.
