This series will be one of the most important ones for SaGa as people usually have some major problems understanding the series or knowing where to start, thats a great idea for a begginer's guide. Very cool project
means so much to hear that! thanks for the encouragement-my endgame here is to inform and present clear options for RPG fans who can see the series as a bit impenetrable.
Kawazu’s credit shouldn’t just be the SaGa series. He’s also responsible for some of the most notable elements of the very first Final Fantasy. Mainly the battle system and introducing elemental weaknesses from his experience with tabletop RPGs. He’s also the reason you can use certain items to cast spells in that series as well. This man’s contribution to the industry is always too understated. That being said….SaGa is still my favorite. I’m looking forward to the upcoming videos.
The SaGa series has always been such an enigma to me when it comes to JRPGs. I have little experience with it, other than getting about 3/4 of the way through the first Final Fantasy Legend. I've always been baffled by that game and its weird mix of fantasy and sci-fi that rivals most Final Fantasy games in terms of weirdness. With this primer, this series is certainly on my list of JRPGs to experience, if only because it seems so strange and varied in each game's world and mechanical workings. I'm very intrigued.
yoooo this was such a great informative vid!!! Reminds me I have Romancing Saga 3 in my backlog and need to start it lol...can't wait for the next part!
Excellent video. This series means so much to me. I grew up on FF but i feel thoroughly abandoned by Square-Enix as an FF FAN. SaGa has completely supplanted FF in my heart. Absolutely love the series, specially Romancing SaGa 3, SaGa Frontier and SaGa Scarlet Grace, my three favorites. I cannot WAIT for SaGa Emerald Beyond.
Thank you so much for the kind words and insight! SaGa definitely went through a strange period of latency in the late 00s/early 2010s, but even then it felt like something was cooking-or at least on the Japan side of things. So stoked this franchise is getting some new love and appreciation; I want to help foster that as much as I can!
Love to see so much passion! I have bought all of the ones available on ps4/ps5 but I didn't start any yet. This video got me more excited than ever to start the Saga series! Thanks!
this is a dream to hear, honestly! thank you! I should have the "where to start with SaGa" video up sometime during the week, but I'm curious about which game you're considering starting with
Personally speaking Saga's history on the whole has eluded me as I've never really studied its history but this helped significantly in detailing that. I have only played a few of these total. As far as the newest release I am thankful that Play Asia exists as I'm sure there will be a version physically that has English on it to order from there (something I've had to get used to with a lack of western physicals for games that should have them). I only purchase JRPGs physically as I find them VERY fun to collect as well as rewarding to own. Great job man, thanks for this!
thank YOU for the kind words! and yes, totally feel you on the physical releases comment. the physical releases for SaGa games are beautiful (it's that Kobayashi art *chef's kiss*), and it's such a shame that physical SaGa releases aren't as big of a worldwide priority. I get it, though; it's always a numbers game. It's super rad that the Asia releases have the English versions available
Hey Joie, happy new year. From one SaGa sicko to another, nice work on this. I've been replaying FFL1&2 at the moment and, although I'm having a great time, I remain bewildered at how FFL1 was one of my first RPGs. Giving a baby a SaGa game is a hell of a thing. Looking forward to seeing what you tackle in parts 2 and 3.
I'm a bit of a normie these days tbh, Human/Human/Mutant/Monster and Human/Mutant/Robot/Monster. But you know I did 4 Monsters and 4 Robots back in the day specifically because the manual told me not to
@@nurvuss H/H/Mu/Mo is a bowl of vanilla ice cream, but it's a fucking delicious one. That's exactly what I pick in almost every playthrough. 4 monsters goes crazy, though. that's almost red flag kink territory

One game id add to this list is The Last Remnant. Not only is that a Kawazu game, its a SaGa game in everything but name. (SaGa Scarlet grace helps solidify this opinion since they share weapon models)
Absolutely love The Last Remnant. I'm going to do a video of the "SaGalikes" after the rest of this series is finished. Will cover TLR in detail for sure.

The First two Saga games alongside were a major influence on Pokemon. In fact Squaresoft releaseing the first game is what got GameFreak to start developing Pokemon even before getting funding from Nintendo. They wouldn't get funding and Publishing until developing Yoshi on the NES.
this little tidbit is actually in part 2! SaGa 1 and 2 were incredibly influential; it's wild. they actually outsold FF1 in the US (and abroad I think, too)!
As someone who only played the original gameboy trilogy (and didn't even finish 2 & 3), I've always had the impression that the series peaked with the Romancing Saga trilogy (and remakes), was still good for the Saga Frontier series, and then fell off a cliff.
