Great tips! I started using REI liner socks and it's been working great. With light meriino wool REI socks over it. Haven't had hot spots since. Umbrella's have been awesome in 80+ degree unexposed areas. Most of the time I wear a looser sun hoodie and use a face stick for sun screen. Another tip is shoe gaiters. I use dirty girl gaiters. They keep the foxtails & rocks out of your socks and shoes and makes it easier to tuck in your pants if you're worried about ticks.
Thanks Rod!! Pinning this comment for the gaiters! I always go with long pants so haven't needed them but have heard great things about em 👍 Great to hear another success story with doubling up on socks! 👌
Great tips Dave! Especially the electrolytes. A couple years ago i started to take electrolyte capsules along so I didn’t;t have to mix a drink while hiking. I keep a few in a baggie in my front chest pocket. Really easy to just pop one and drink water if i need one. I do take an electrolyte drink mix for a flavored drink at camp. Having a belt integrated in the pants is a great idea.
Awesome Dan! I hadn't considered the electrolyte caps! 😱 Sounds like I should add it to the mix. At times it's hard to just keep chugging electrolytes on trail. Kind of get sick of em easy.
Did a 20 mile overnight shakedown on the AT last weekend. All in with 2L of water, food/snacks was 19lbs with several luxury items. I would add a tennis style sweatband. I bring a baseball cap when it rains to keep water off my glasses, but is too hot going up steep elevations. It was sunny the second day and coming out of the woods to the fields, it was hot and bright. I bought these roll-up plastic sunglass things that weigh nothing and work with or without glasses. Just trying to save ounces here and there.
Awesome Mark! Way to get those miles in! Sweatband sounds decent in heat and you can dunk it in some water to cool down. Roll up sunglasses sounds legit too 👌 Well done!
Next level tips Dave! I have been so guilty of not keeping sunscreen handy… I can’t do a visor…I’ve tried it but my scalp burns lol. I’d prefer if I could use them but my hair is too fine. In the woods it would t be so bad. Maybe I’ll follow your fashion forward suggestion and try again!
Thanks Melguyver! Ik not having the sunscreen within reach is not a good move for me lol. Ah yes, I could see the visor not working out for folks with thinner or fine hair. My hairline is receding like the Germans during WWII but what's left provides enough cover so far. Lol fashion forward just trying to get that breeze goin! It's a game changer!
Thanks Matt! That was an older vid. I think it was a Neutrogena stick. I'm now using Banana Boat. Either their travel spray bottle or more recently on our trip; the travel 1 oz lotion. Both work great! I found that I was missing spots with the stick.
Sunscreen has always been a hit and miss for me. It’s a fine line between, do I apply sunscreen or bug lotion. Chiggers are real where I hike in Texas. I go with sunscreen in Colorado though. Swampback. lol. I like the term not the feeling. Senior member of the stretch out club here!🙋♂️
Gotta stretch it out! Swampback is no joke! 🤣 I always do long sleeves with permetherin and just opt for sunscreen during the day. At camp I'll wipe down and switch to bug wipes for the night. Prob no easy to go long sleeve down in tx tho!

@@DaveOffGrid I definitely wear a long sleeve hoodie, sun gloves and a hat. They’re a must for me here.
I feel like you're really underestimating how many Sexy Awards I've been winning.
