I HAVE ONE SINCE 2018 OS STILL GREAT!
That's fantastic! Thanks for watching!
Great video! 🙌
That’s Awesome Review! Have A Lovely New Week!
@@JUANORQUIO thanks for watching! You too! 😀
From everyone I know that has the pot, loves it. Great breakdown.
@@HuckOutdoors Thanks bud!
Great review! I’m gonna try mine out this week! I’m actually excited to see how it does 😀
@@UnlikelyHiker Thanks Mel! I think you’ll enjoy it! Great budget friendly option!
Good stuff Dave. Great job on the backpacking weight. Everybody does love that new gear smell.😂😂
Hahaha thanks Jason! Always fun trying out new pieces in the field! The tech is so good now you can be super comfortable in most conditions right around that 10lb mark.
What is the comfort rating? I am ordering myself a 0 degree and have been wondering about the ratings
Hi and thanks for the question! All of UGQ products are comfort rated at the temp listed. So if you get a 0 deg product you'll be comfortable down to 0 degs.
🤩🤩🤩🤩
Subscribed. I'm considering this pad. Thanks for putting up your Pack Wizard gear list. Very helpful for others like me who are trimming down their pack. Trying to get a fastpacking setup dialed and will upload my journey as I go.
@@ToolsTrucksTrails thanks for watching and joining along! For the price this pad is hard to beat!
@@DaveOffGrid I’m thinking that I should get the long wide version. I’m 5’9, 160lbs
So I need a laptop and a phone?
@@DersABigBuck one or the other will do
Nice look at your new gear in the field. 👍
Thanks Dan! Always great to put the theories to practice 🤙
Those glasses remind of the outfielder glasses from the 90s! I liked that gear loft.
PLAY BALL!!! 🤣 Great trip bud! I'm lovin' the gear loft!
The flip down shades are .. interesting. Almost expecting a fan to flip out somewhere Inspector Gadget style lol. I dig how you're giving all the UL gadgets a good field test.
Thanks Rod! Gotta have the right tool for the job lol! And always great to get these pieces out for some testing 🤙
I have a Volpi Fastpack 30. O love the running vest for comfort, but also for water. It helps to get some water off your back. I want to try the GG fast Kumo, since I loked my regular Kumo
Thanks for watching! I think we're going to see an increase in the running vest popularity in the coming years. Glad to hear these packs work so well for ya!
Does the odor resistance line up with their advertising?
@@ddff5242 thanks for watching! I have the previous model but I don't think it's bad at all
A lantern is great item to have. Especially when you don't want to deal with a campfire (or can't have one). I'm partial to the the UCO mini lantern that uses tea lights.
You said it Doc! You and Rod Outdoors both like the UCO light! Nice ambience for sure! 😁👍
is it as good as the gossamer foam pad?
Thanks for watching! I haven't tried the option from GG but since the thickness is the same I'd suspect it's similar. The OV options come in smaller sizes however so you don't need to cut the GG pad down (if needed).
I've thought about one of those variants. The UCO Mini Candle Lantern is what I take when I want that nice little flame for coziness or to burn off condensation in the tent during the Winter. Those tea candles are dirt cheap and they last 3-4 hours.
Thanks Rod! UCO is prob your safest bet on price, pack size, weight and not needing additional fuel. I've really been liking the flame that the Orange Lantern puts out 🤙
I originally bought the original UCO candle lantern and then later found the mini. I love the mini. Especially since tea lights are cheap. I also keep watch for the citronella tea lights to go on clearance at WalMart at the end of the season and stock up for next year.
@@Doc_Watson nice Doc! The UCO lantern seems really popular as well. Does the citronella work with it for the bugs?
@@DaveOffGrid I think it helps with the mosquitoes at night. Probably not as good as those electronic bug repellents or the old fashioned mosquito coils (also a favorite of mine. - I use the coils during the day at camp.)
Just back from a trip in the Sierra. My Plex Solo, once again, served me well. Sell out? Actually, buying a tent made in China is selling out. Zpacks is made in the USA, so paying extra wasn't an issue for me at all. Especially given the quality of their products. I'd rather be sleeping in my Plex Solo in the wilderness overlooking a lake I have all to myself for two or three nights, than in a $700 hotel room (the cost of the tent). I also have had no problems with the quality of my Plex Solo. I was expecting a zipper fail at this point, but so far everything is still working as purchased. I really don't know why people whine about the price of this tent. It really is the best solo tent out there.
The price is decently expensive for most backpackers, especially if they're on a budget. I enjoy the quality of my tent and packs as well. I always recommend trying to snag on a deal if it's lightly used.
And huge funnel to collect rainwater
Ive been curious about that lantern. I like the look of it and it seems like a fun thing to have. In the central high peaks area there are no fires allowed. It’s a fun thing to have when you can’t have a fire as you pointed out. Great video Dave!
Thanks Melissa! It's def a nifty piece! I like the look/design and have been enjoying testing it out so far. Yes, will def come in handy on those trips where we can't have a fire!
Pretty neat item. I have a candle lantern I take when it’s cooler. I always assumed this would take up a lot of fuel but 10g/hr doesn’t seem like too much. But I would budget the larger number to be safe. I agree about having a little flame for ambiance. 👍
Thanks Dan! Yeah I think it's probably the larger number as well so I need to make sure I take a full (smaller) can if I run this, cook food and possibly bring my bug repeller too.
It ain't your grandpappy's canvas pup tent. I'm taking mine out this weekend for another section hike of the AT. It's a dream to carry, easy to set up. Bought a used in mint condition with the carbon pole and stakes for $450 last year. Has plenty of room for all my gear inside.
sure isn't Mark! Great to hear you're doing another section with this beast of a tent! I think it fits thru hiking very well. It may lack some of the creature comforts of other designs but it's a solid choice! Nice discount you got as well! I def recommend picking it up used to get that price point down.
I'm totally shocked too, that ANYONE would spend that MUCH MONEY for a pup tent, my God
It's a large sum of cash. If I didn't get a steep discount I would not have picked it up.
@@DaveOffGrid I suppose when you are backpacking, every ounce counts, but what is it $100 an ounce
@@loril.mangold8160 depending on the backpacker that can be true. It is for me. Around $37.50 per oz for this tent! 😱
600?
Yes, unfortunately, at normal pricing (new). I found mine slightly used at a steep discount so I'd recommend hunting around for those deals!
I have a the Talon 6 lumbar pack primarily when taking long walks with my dog. Comfortable pack, sufficient storage space (side pocket holds my iPhone 13 Pro Max just fine), and most importantly two additional water bottles on those hot days. Very happy with the Talon 6 for what I use it for . . .
Glad to hear it works for your use case! Didn't do it in the end for me and day hikes but I can see how it fits for other uses!
I use alpha for a sleep layer and its great. Lighter than typical sleeping layers but bulkier.
@@jakeva9802 Another great use for it! I'm looking into getting the pants for a sleep layer as well 👍
If you are just a bag boiler those stoves are good. The simmer ring on the trangia, plus the screw top works good for me so far. Still experimenting with it, and it's a knock off, not a trangia. I wish I would have gotten the Trangia because it's got a few leaks already but near the top where it doesn't matter. I like making pancakes so far. I mostly cook throw together things like knorr soup and dried meat. Just clean out the pot with a squeejee and a paper towel. I like alcohol because I'm not in a hurry. It's quiet and I don't like those disposable gas containers. It's more zen.
Thanks for watching! Some great points here! Definitely more quiet and peaceful to run. Trangia is the OG, tried and true. Also like the simmer ring. Pancakes sound awesome to make!
Can you bring a wagon to haul urstuff to campground ?
@@coffeedollsvp yes you can! The campground is not far from the pier 👍
@@DaveOffGrid it's not a steep climb?
@@coffeedollsvp To camp not at all, it's a straight shot, prob under half a mile for the campsites near the port. There's another campsite further back. Any of the day hikes will involve elevation gains/descents.
Everyone's first pocket knife bcak in the day...
If you prefer a stuffed pillow over an inflatable, check out the Walmart Mainstay Travel Pillow (14" x 20"). Pillow case sold separately but both together is about $8. It also compresses well. I like to use it in the shoulder seasons as it's warmer than an inflatable. When I pack my pack, I use it as a layer between my quilt & clothes and the other items in my pack.
Nice tip Doc!
Really nice quilt!
@@backpackingadventures4813 love that thing! 🙌
It’s too bad that the “cult like status of Durston gear” prevents people from trying it. I own the XMid 2 and the Kakwa 55. I love them both and they were more affordable than most of the competition. I guess that makes me a cult member!
@@jeffhartman5166 as long as you're not going around trashing other videos for people's honest opinions against the tent you're good 👍 I highly doubt anything prevents ppl from picking it up due to how popular it is. It just isn't for everyone 🤷♂️
Rewatching this one for a third time--might be the most fun we've had yet. Such a cool topic--gotta do another ASAP.
@@OutsideComfortZone had a blast on this one! 🙌 Thanks for joining as always bud! Great group here 👍
I have an old Vivioactive 3 that it's almost time to replace. (1st GPS watch for me to see if I would like it) Can you recommend a resource that compares models and features across brands? I don't need loads of bells and whistles that I either won't use or rarely use. One feature I really want that my current watch doesn't have is to preload navigation points. I like to bushwhack and I don't necessarily have a preplanned route, but I will have a preplanned destination. I would like to be able to enter in a couple waypoints and a final destination and then use the watch like a compass to make sure I'm heading in the correct general direction.
Nice Doc! This site has a bunch for the 'best of 2024' www.outdoorgearlab.com/topics/camping-and-hiking/best-gps-watch?specs=n&n=0&sort_field=#compare I know for my watch I can put in different points (with the premium All Trails membership). Not sure if you can only add way points without a trail.
Fire lookout cabin is cool. Awesome views up there. Looked like a fun trip. Cool area and video
Thanks Jason! Was a cool time with the other Jason 🤣 Need to get you out here some time!
@@DaveOffGrid I agree. Never backpacked in California before
Concerning X Mid. Firstly , without having met you. I am certain you are shorter than 6 feet tall. Also, race a person with x mid, setting up in a downpour. Peace.
Well I'm sure we're all astounded by your amazing height guessing skills. I'm pretty sure any single walled, 2 pole design will go up just as fast. I love these comments btw, it's beginning to show the kind of backpackers the X-Mid fans are. So keep up the great work X-Mid fans!
Can we get a link or the name of the poncho?

@@HuckOutdoors had a blast as always 🙌 Great views and a great campsite! Thanks for putting this one together bud!
Missed out on that one. Glad you dudes had a good time
@@Leadmeoutdoors thanks Matt! Missed ya on this one. Looking forward to the next one 🤙
Great trip! I feel your pain with the heatwave. Relentless. I’ve never had the mountain house chili Mac. The packet gourmet burgers for the win. Same for the NMM eggs and sausage. Very delicious! Beautiful trail!
Thanks Dan! Yeah the heat wasn't as crazy on this day since the wind, especially near the top was blowing. But it's been murderous this summer! I would not recommend the MH Chili Mac although their lasagna isn't horrible. I need to try PG burger!
@@DaveOffGrid I stopped eating mountain house a couple years ago since I found packit gourmet and next mile meals. Thousand times better. And now I found peak refuel so I mix and match them. But I only ever like two from mountain house.
This makes me wish I lived in the Golden State. Really cool to see the Lunar Solo next to The One. Looking forward to hearing how you like that Exped. Great one, FB!
Thanks bud! Get out here! We are def lucky. One of Huck's fav tents of all time. A large amount of space on that tent floor for a 1 pole design. A little more on the pad in the following video. Need some more testing with it!
Great hike & great views. Huck really knows that area well. It was warm but seemed like no bugs. All American burger may be one of my favorites. 👍👍
Thanks Tom! Huck is the resident pro that's for sure! The bugs were actually killer at camp. We must've hid it well! The smoke from the fire helped and we didn't get bit due to the thermacell, bug repellent and fire but there were plenty. Not that much on trail however. Darn it! Got to try Packit Gourmet already! Haha.
Awesome hike guys! Beautiful scenery! I haven’t gotten out much due to work 😢 Miss you guys!
Thanks Melissa! I miss hiking with ya too! This one did have some nice views and luckily some wind near the top.
EVA foam rolls are available at craft stores. Typical use is for making costumes. Usually under $15 for a 24"x60"x4mm roll. CON: Usually only available in white PRO: It's easy to see your gear if you use it as a ground sheet while unpacking/packing
@@Doc_Watson Great pro tip Doc! I didn't know that one! Pinning this comment! 📌
Cons: ridiculously overpriced. Lid sucks. Toaks cup, sterno folding stove. Fuel can still fits with the stove in the cup. Less weight, less cost.
@@turdferguson2863 If you can find it, sually out of stock. I'd recommend the Fire Maple Petrel UL for a cheaper option 👍
Thanks!
Thanks so much bud! 🙌🙌🙌🙌
Pretty neat! Did you use this at little jimmy?
@@Leadmeoutdoors sure did!! Love this stove! The fuel used was also pretty close to my in home tests. There wasn't a ton of wind but the screen did well 👍
You told me about the X-Boil in Jan 2023. Looks like a great setup. However for the price, I'll stick with my DIY Improved Spiguyver Stove from a RedBull can for 7g and $2. However, this video has given me ideas for improving my windscreen.
@@Doc_Watson Nice doc! I def recommend the felt pad for a safer set up. The windscreen is just as vital as a great stove 👍 Looking forward to hearing about your set up Doc!
All you need is a coffee can (metal) a half of a roll of toilet paper (for the "wick") and about 2 inches of isopropyl alcohol. Basically, homemade sterno. You can put it together ahead of time. I've cooked my food on it many times. The can generally comes with a plastic lid. You can reuse it. It can be put out easily with the bottom of a pan. Just wait for the can to be cool enough to put the lid back on without melting. It cools down quickly, but the sheer abundance of warnings on everything leads me to believe that humans are... well, there's a BIIIIG margin for human error.
@@kimicappiello5480 But is it about 3oz like the X-Boil or 7g for my Improved Spiguyver Stove? Hey, but if it works for you, go for it.
@Doc_Watson Your stove is very nice, I was just very homeless and poor when I learned how to make stuff out of things folk throw away. 🥲❤️
Recently listened to a podcast where a podiatrist discussed using these for building toe strength while on trail, which is supposed to help with stability.
@@iceman857 great point! I'm def a believer now!
