This is one hell of a car. Audi’s 5 cylinder with the aluminum block combined with the lightweight Tremec 5 speed, carbon fiber body, lightweight suspension and drivetrain components, this car is the highest-performing car that a 5 cylinder will ever see.
Audi’s 5 cylinder has come a very long way since the 70s, from its acquisition via Mercedes Benz in the 70s, through its time in the 80s and 90s in Group B (S1 Quattro) and ISMA (90 Quattro and other models), even to the roads in the 80s and 90s. Through the late 2000s with the upgrade from Audi’s 2.2L 5 cylinder to the 2.5L 5 cylinder, retaining the original 1-2-4-5-3 firing order, where this new, naturally-aspirated engine was first placed into the rabbit, and Jetta, making 140hp. Eventually this motor made its way into the Mk6 Golf, Mk6 Jetta, and B7 Passat with 170hp. It was dubbed 07K as the engine code, opposed to their latest V10, dubbed 07L I believe. VW/Audi’s first 07K model made 140hp due to restrictive exhaust manifold flow. They then upped the power with a more refined exhaust manifold, making 170hp now. A restrictive intake manifold and exhaust manifold still were in place, despite the car being NA, holding back around 100hp in all from the engine in favor of fuel economy for the VW models it was placed into. This 07K model came with a cast-iron block, aluminum cylinder head and oil pan, as well as VVT-I via intake cam phasers which created an interference engine with the variable timing, cast iron rotating assembly(crankshaft/rods/pistons), 2,480CC of displacement, dual timing chain setup opposite of the serpentine belt side of the motor that was mated to a choice of a 5 speed manual or a 6 speed automatic. The O2Q 6 speed manual from the Mk6 and mk7 GTI however do also fit the original 07K.
What VW got was a motor that had the capability to sound like a gen 1 Gallardo (with the 5.0L V10 we all miss), and a motor that caused parasitic understeer in any car it was mounted into. The motor was mounted transversely for balance, fitment, and to provide easy access to FWD via transaxle setup.
Audi then took this engine, forged the crankshaft, changed the compression, intake manifold, AFR, fuel system (still remained port injected for this V2 of the 07K), made both cams VVT, and put a single-scroll turbocharger on the back. The displacement of 2,480CC remained the same, as well as the materials of the motor, cast-iron for the block, aluminum for the head and oil pan, and the motor overall made 340hp.
This setup then was combined with, in the United States, an individual OA6 6 speed manual gearbox, in Europe, with a 7-speed dual clutch, legendarily known as the DQ500, then fed to a haldex front transaxle as well as a haldex rear drivetrain, making for Quattro all-wheel drive, favoring front-wheel drive first. Minimum of 100% front, 0% rear, maximum of 50-50.
Audi’s first tangle with the 07K, beginning in 2010 with the release of the 8J TTRS, went slightly well, with sales and production numbers at an unfortunate low. The car was notorious for parasitic understeer, however, made for an incredibly visceral driving experience. The 5 cylinder brings back the legacy of the 2.2L group B motor, invokes the emotions felt by the legendary drivers from the era, such as Walter Roehrl. People who bought the car fell in love. I know a guy who has owned his for 10 years, put 200,000 miles on it, and the car still runs great.
What Audi and VW didn’t realize when this motor was created is that it would go on to be their most robust, and reliable production motor of all time. Owners have ran the VW 07K to 400,000 miles before having to resleeve or rebuild, which is a number unheard of in the German market. The closed-deck engine block allows for plenty of power to be pushed through the motor, a great amount of engine cooling, oil supply, and, when the DAZA 07K was created, weight savings.
In Europe, the 07K V2 was placed into the Audi RS3 sportback as well. The RS3 was more successful than the TTRS, as it was far more practical. This led to the creation of the next generation of 5 cylinder, the 07K DAZA.
The 07K DAZA was one hell of a creation. Utilizing an all-aluminum block, aluminum cylinder head, magnesium oil pan, the weight savings were in the hundreds of pounds, for the motor alone. Cooling had been enhanced with more robust oil coolers, a reworked coolant system, as well as a reworked fuel system enabling direct injection opposed to port injection. The intake manifold utilized individual throttle body-like systems, pulling in the perfect amount of air per cylinder, though a short-runner intake manifold has proven far more useful for power development with this motor. The displacement remained the same, new cams and phasers were created for more accurate and aggressive timing, and all DAZA models came with only a DQ500, all over the world.
This DAZA motor was put into the newer RS3, as well as the 8S TTRS, the final generation TTRS ever made. Companies like IROZ Motorsport who made over 1,000hp from the 07K V2 immediately jumped into production with the DAZA.
The Audi TTRS 8S was fitted with more aggressive haldex tuning than the RS3.
The RS3 came with only magnetic suspension. The TTRS had an option for fixed coilover suspension.
The original 2017-2018 models of the TTRS came with carbon ceramic brakes in the front, 6-piston I believe.
Companies like IROZ, 034 Motorsport, Verkline, Wavetrac, United Motorsport, USP Motorsport, Unitronic, Integrated Engineering, DS1, APR, Syvecs.LTD, Ecotune UK, etc, all came together to deliver hardware and software upgrades for the DAZA platform. In Europe, the RS3 was available in sportback form as well, all 3 models were offered software and hardware upgrades.
The lightweight construction of the motor lended itself to incredible potential of power, combined with astounding characteristics when it comes to balance, handling performance as well. There are time attack cars utilizing the DAZA motor due to its lightweight characteristics, and they have set record times around numerous tracks across the globe.
The DAZA motor combined with the DQ500 and Haldex AWD turned out to be feared as if men feared god himself, putting Twin Turbo V10 Lamborghinis to shame at TX 2K21 via tbe RS3 sedan, being renown for having an unseen advantage over every production car in existence, even with minor upgrades such as fueling, intake and forced induction, and tuning. A TTRS on a stage 3 tune can take down the new GT500 in roll racing, the Hellcat redeye, R35 GTR, with E85, McLaren 720S in roll racing, pretty much anything in existence from drag racing, and on the track, lap times with modifications are insanely quick.
The 07K platform became legendary, but far too late into its life, as this year, the TTRS was officially ended in its life.
The 2022 RS3 8Y has gone on to inherit the 07K DNWA model, further improving on the success of the DAZA engine, as well as the new RSQ3, Audi’s 5 cylinder SUV. Unfortunately, it seems as if all combustion engines are disappearing quickly, doubtful that Audi’s 5 cylinder legacy will continue for much longer.
Now, for my story that nobody will read.
I was 16 when my 2012 Volkswagen Passat popped up online. I bought it for my first car. I then later learned I had bought one with the 5 cylinder.
It has a 6 speed auto unfortunately, and is FWD.
I started modifying the car when I was 17.
It’s been a slow process between me graduating high school, then starting and finishing flight school, so not much has been done.
Stage 2 on the tuning, springs for suspension, plenty of work done to the exhaust, with headers coming soon. 85A polymer motor and gearbox mounts, which is the same vibration you feel in this video Shmee, as the D8 70 uses polymer motor mounts.
Coming up for the Passat is intake manifold, coilover suspension, new cams, better brakes, reworked suspension, braided brake lines, etc.
I’ll need $10,000 for all that, but I will be saving. The 5 cylinder has treated me very well. Despite the head rebuild I needed to do, the oil leaks, it is still a wonderful engine. And it sounds gnarly.
The D8 JB70 is a body blessed with this legacy of a motor. It gives the engine purpose finally, to be DRIVEN as it was designed to be. I can only hope that I’ll be able to buy one of these one day, and have it shipped to the United States. One day.

Donkervoort designed a new one which is even lighter ! ALso, the place where you drove it is the part of the country which was reclaimed from the sea hence it being flat as a pancake.

Shmee, I’ve seen in Amsterdam a blue Ferrari about a week ago, was it you? It would really cool, though I haven’t seen the car close but rather in distance

PS. Probably the traffic lights changes when you’re closer. They have radars. If you try to press the button on the traffic lights when you want to cross a street it gives prevalence to the pedestrians if there are no cars as well, this is really clever I’m not gonna lie
