The second side of the steel ring was harder to braze because it was covered by a layer of black oxide that formed while brazing the first side. To prevent that I would have put some flux on both sides before I started heating anything. The flux will protect the metal from oxidation caused by the heating. It is better to prevent the oxide from forming in the first place, instead of having to wait for the oxide to be removed by flux applied after the metal was already very hot.

Also because the flame of your torch is mostly invisible here i am finally getting to see the behaviour of the braze pool in great detail. This is how a DIY video should be like. Very good explanation of the all aspects of the job, like materials, temp, cleaning etc. Also, I would like to know if the same method can be used to join brass with mild steel/steel ? -Thanks a lot !
You’re holding the gas torch too close to the work: heat is generated as the gas burns, the flame will be at its hottest towards the end of the flame. Had you applied flux to the bed and the piece and introduced the brazing rod inside, at the base of the piece, the braze would have run round the entire ring, making a stronger joint using less braze metal.
Futon I totally agree. Branded joints should be treated like soldered joints because brazing is high temperature hard solder. The joints should be thoroughly cleaned and fluxes immediately to avoid oxidation

No, that was rather messy. I would suggest that your preparation was inadequate, and (from my experience) would have been far better off using a different technique such as a small tip with oxy-acetylene. That would have given you much more control of the heat zone/s.
Maybe an obvious question but I am new to this... How do you hold the brazing rod? Bare hands, gloves, mulgrips etc? I would imagine it could get hot, but maybe it is like solder where it melts before the heat conducts down.
Yes, any dampness in the concrete will want to escape when heated - that's why experienced/knowledgeable outdoorsmen don't ever use river rocks to line campfires - or BOOM!
So what was holding the Ring in place. Looks to be one piece. Otherwise the ring would've moved during the brazing process without anything holding it in place.

I looked on Amazon but it is not obvious what rods I need neither what flux I need. There is only a large tub for £35 which is a bit excessive for one braze. This is a very informative video yet never try soldering copper joints where wood smoke can ruin a joint on copper pipe. So always try to protect the copper pipe from the smoke with a fire proof wrap. I know this because I am a plumber and sweating copper pipes next to two by fours is part of the job so no smoke in the joint. Now this is brazing and I have always brazed in a vise or on the car etc yet never around wood and it did not look like was a problem for brazing and silver soldering copper next to burning I have not had the pleasure of checking out so just be aware of the smoke. Just an FYI as I like this guys videos and I always watch them for anything I can learn as one will never know everything.......sigh lol
Nicely done, you've got a knack for explaining this stuff and demonstrating it clearly! Watching that puddle flatten reminds me of watching my old man brazing copper for HVAC. The first time I saw the blob of brazing material get sucked into the joint when it hit temp, it was like magic. Took me a long time to figure out those copper pipes were sucking heat out of the joint almost as fast as the flame was dumping it in...no time for lollygagging, lol. I'd hate to see what kind of jabba the hut joint i'd do these days. :)
That's true, but I've used it for countless repairs over the years with no failures. Normally you'd use a bronze brazing rod and flux. Thanks for watching
Would firebrick work to prevent damage to surfaces such as concrete in video? Am looking at repairing the seats on metal chairs. The wire screening has come loose and thought brazing would be a good repair since everything is attached on underside. What did would you recommend?
Glad it helped John! Be sure to look over my extensive video playlists below for many other videos of interest to you, and most importantly take one minute to share a link to my channel with others. Thanks ua-cam.com/users/electronicsnmoreplaylists
Can I use an oxy acetylene torch to repair a bronze statue using a silicon bronze rod? Most people use TIG welding, but it just too expensive for me. Everyone talks about bronze brazing, but not bronze brazing BRONZE. I wonder if it’s not possible because the statue and the rod have the same melting temperature.
Do you think this will work for adding a small steel patch to a cast iron engine block? I have a Ford engine block with a small piece missing from the mating surface for the water pump causing it too leak coolant. I'm afraid to weld it using a mig welder because cast iron cracks. Does anyone know.....? Thanks
If there's a crack, you're going to have to drill the very end of the crack out before making any repair. You're going to require a lot of heat to make that repair.
I have a wood stove with serious pitting due to rust fissure forming under kettle. What is the best way to get the brazing material into the dirty fissure without drilling out all the fissures?
I'm new to welding/brazing. Just trying to spot weld/braze tin blades back to frame on a yard whirligig. But not sure what to order. What is difference of stay silv 5, 6, or 15?
@@electronicsNmore Done. Not as easy as you made it look though :-). it seems that the bernzomatic torch with the yellow canister could *barely* get temps to melt the bronze rods...
@@electronicsNmore The piece was similar to yours in the video, slightly more beefy. I did it outside of the garage with about zero degrees celcius which probably wasn't helping. In retrospect I would make a little box with firebricks or something to contain the heat. I am sitting on the chair right now :-). Seems well fixed! Cheers!

Could brazing be used to join tin cans to make a stove flue? If the first part above the fire box is a proper steel pipe? I was thinking of using Tuna tins, as I collected a shed-load. See anything with "Made in the USA" it's going to be good quality. I got a Speed Square from Amazon. Perfect. It's in inches though. I can't work fractions. Notably it's why we were tought fractions at school. It didn't sink in. MMs are better. Re-use not Recycle.

Why is it, all the good products people recommend (like HotMax Flux)... are never available locally }:( btw...which brazing rods are best for brazing brass to steel with a propane torch(?)
the cleanliness of the surface can b critical for even mig welding, if ur usin flux core then u the weld is extremely sensitive any contamination, u can get nice welds with flux core i even have a bottle of denatured alcohol i wipe stuff down with before i weld before i use flux core all the time its jus way more convenient n welds fine for most things, n for what doesnt u simply plug a bottle in but at the very absolute least u should really wire brush the surface n spray it real quick with brakleen it only takes literally a few seconds n makes ur welds look alot better n for sure alot stronger without contamination

Should have done a silver solder capillary joint on the base of the ring , fluxed all the parts before heating, heated from underneath and just touched the rod enough to fill the joint, you used ten times more rod than needed and got a big fat mess.

Glad you enjoyed the video Craig! Be sure to check out my video playlists as well and share. Thank you
Are you able to do this with a propane torch?
Yes
Hi ..just wondering what brazing rods and flux you are using there for mild steel
jcims Glad you enjoyed the video. I have brazed many copper A/C refrigeration lines over the years. :-)
do you think its a good idea to braze on wood
Harris does not recommend it for steel.
Very helpful. Thx

Yes, oxy-acetylene can give far more control of the heat zone, and of course you can bronze braze bronze.
This is the best video on brazing that I found so far.
Great to hear!
I'm new to welding/brazing. Just trying to spot weld/braze tin blades back to frame on a yard whirligig. But not sure what to order. What is difference of stay silv 5, 6, or 15?
For tin, you solder. The melting point is too low to braze. Use an acid flux and solid solder wire.
Primitive
What type of gas are you using
Hi Mike. MAPP gas.
thanks, i will now go fix a broken office chair that failed on its welded connection...
It should work fine. Thanks for watching!
@@electronicsNmore Done. Not as easy as you made it look though :-). it seems that the bernzomatic torch with the yellow canister could *barely* get temps to melt the bronze rods...
@@kvitoroulis The metal must've been thick, and pulling away a lot of heat.
Cheers!
An excellent tutorial. Thanks!

could you do this with a butane torch? (steel to steel) Cheers
They're usually too small in size to heat up the metal.
Good video. Very helpful. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Does it work with silver solder brazing copper to steel ?
Could brazing be used to join tin cans to make a stove flue? If the first part above the fire box is a proper steel pipe? I was thinking of using Tuna tins, as I collected a shed-load. See anything with "Made in the USA" it's going to be good quality. I got a Speed Square from Amazon. Perfect. It's in inches though. I can't work fractions. Notably it's why we were tought fractions at school. It didn't sink in. MMs are better. Re-use not Recycle.
The tin cans are really tin plated steel, so yes.
Just learned something new👍.

who kind of filler rods I need to braze carbon steel/mild steel? can I use aluminium to braze joint carbon steel?
You cannot use aluminum to braze steel. Steel is usually brazed using bronze rods.
Why is it, all the good products people recommend (like HotMax Flux)... are never available locally }:( btw...which brazing rods are best for brazing brass to steel with a propane torch(?)
I use low fuming bronze or brass with flux.
What. Is use to heat machine
Propane torch.
the cleanliness of the surface can b critical for even mig welding, if ur usin flux core then u the weld is extremely sensitive any contamination, u can get nice welds with flux core i even have a bottle of denatured alcohol i wipe stuff down with before i weld before i use flux core all the time its jus way more convenient n welds fine for most things, n for what doesnt u simply plug a bottle in but at the very absolute least u should really wire brush the surface n spray it real quick with brakleen it only takes literally a few seconds n makes ur welds look alot better n for sure alot stronger without contamination
I usually wire brush the area before working if I want a very nice looking job. Thanks for watching!
Its good,,,,,,,,but i m not geting what is the material of rod for brazing,,,,either it is also made up of brass,,,,
I placed links to products in the video description area.
@@electronicsNmore thanx sir,,,, as me from Pakistan we just got around 140V instead of 220V,,the electric welding plant is not working,,,so i turned to gas welding,,i bought a torch but it is mini it is not able to melt brass,,,,i bought another one and its sound is too high that we cannot operate in residential area,,,now me searching for a solution and saw ur video,,,
Thanks for making this video, I'm a welder and my boss has asked me to braze some brass at work tomorrow and I haven't done it since I was at school nearly 2 decades ago.
I found your video very informative and clear.
After watching it I'm no longer nervous about messing up the bosses fancy brass door handle tomorrow.

how did it turn out?
I would just like to ask when you're doing your videos could you make your lettering when you put the whatever on their make the letters a little bigger so we could see them please thank you
All my videos for the past 4-5 years have clear text boxes. :-)
Should have done a silver solder capillary joint on the base of the ring , fluxed all the parts before heating, heated from underneath and just touched the rod enough to fill the joint, you used ten times more rod than needed and got a big fat mess.
No big fat mess. The job was beautiful, and still in perfect condition inside a car's cooling fan motor. I've been brazing and soldering for at least 30 years, I know exactly what I'm doing. Do it your way if you know better.
Wonderful Instructional Brazing Video! Always wondered why even *7* *year* *olds* are able to do #Steampunk Cosplay so easily, with all the metal attach stuff. Now I feel more _"confident"_ to enter this Steam Environment Costume World myself, Thanks to your superb tutorial! #DesignerTJP
Awesome got it, jst what I was looking for...

Use mapp gas and a turbo torch! That propane will run out unless the bottle is full each time! Oxy/ acetylene even better!
That was a MAPP torch. :-)
Your idea is you don't need oxyzen
You talk to much
You breathe too much.
Great video! Thank you. Will Stay Silv 5 work the same for steel?

@@electronicsNmore Thank you Sir!!
I welded broken small flat stock steel together on a lawnmower catcher twice (40 years ago) and it kept braking due to vibration but then I brazed it together and it never broke again.
Brazing works extremely well when the right rod is used, I guess you used the typical bronze rod. Thanks for watching John! Never done anything like this before and I’m contemplating fixing the aluminium base of a bar stool where the bracket underneath that holds the seat suspension mount in place has cracked so the seat is very wobbly and unusable. Do you think it’s possible for me to tackle this job myself. I’m an experience DIY’er who is not a mechanic but does a lot of tinkering.
You’re video is full of pertinent information and tips giving me confidence to try.
Nothing to lose. Practice on a piece of scrap first. Thanks for watching!
