    I just went thru the same process with my 2005 Matrix. Random misfire on one and two. No codes, but I could see the misfire on live data. I could not find the source of the problem. One day went to start, and no compression in #2 at all. Looked under valve cover, and an intake was stuck open. Used a bore scope and while there was lots of carbon, there was no witness marks. Was about to replace the engine, but thought I would pull the plastic intake so see why the valve would not close. To my surprise, I found 2 pieces of plastic in intakes 1 and 2. In the case of cylinder 2, it had dropped under the valve and it would not close. I rotated the engine and got the plastic out. I found that there is a plastic baffle in the intake that had broken apart. I broke apart and removed what was left of the baffle and put it back together. Luckily no bent valve. Great even compression. No random misfire. Over 290,000 km and it runs great. The engine used to have a bit of a rattle, but that is gone too. I guess it was the plastic baffle in the intake that was making the rattle.

      90 Toyota Corolla 5 speed 1.8 Mines got a rattle to it. Every time Im About to shift right at 4rpm, it makes a raddel, but I wouldn't think it was the vales.

    That sucks. It's a Toyota. It should have lasted longer than 172k. I wonder what happened with the valves that caused that to happen.

    Be interesting to remove the valve cover and see if the 1/2 valve springs or whatever are ok. I know my GF's Malibu likes to blow out rocker arm bolts :)

      Last night before i went to bed i was thinking.... Maybe i should of removed the valve cover to check those valves . under load the car drives decent , thats why i figured the valve springs should be ok. Only at idle is when you feel the misfires.its like at idle the compression is bleeding off faster that it can make it.

    So I have a question a buddy of mines sold me a 2002 Toyota Corolla but it has a missfire and he said it was the coils so does all 4 of the coils need to be changed. And can you send me a link to what coils I need to buy? I seen ones with metal ends then other with plastic ends I’m confused.

    • @themechanic6117
      @themechanic6117  3 роки тому +1

      Go to autozone and get the coils. They'll give you the ones you need. Typically I only replace the coil that's bad. Don't be surprised if the new coils don't fix it. I see this all the time where cars get sold saying they only need this one simple thing... that's far from the truth. If it's a simple problem why don't they fix it instead of selling it?

    Excuse my ignorance, still learning about engines and stuff. If intake valves are leaking compression, that means they're not closing/sealing right? Could that be because valve clearances are unmaintained and got too tight? Hope that's not a dumb question.

    • @themechanic6117
      @themechanic6117  4 роки тому +1

      Yes the valves arent sealing. It could be a problem with the rocker assembly, carbon build up or even a bent valve can cause that

    Put the original coil from the dealership simple

  • @happycat0411
    @happycat0411 Рік тому

    It's much cheaper just to change all the coils all at the same time. Anyone with the least bit of mechanical experience should be able to do DIY this within 1.5 hours max (2.5 hours if replacing the spark plugs as well). Total cost for both 4 new spark plugs and 4 new coils should be around $100 ~ $110 USD. I did the PVC valve and the MAF sensor at the same time as I had done zero maintenance on my Rav4 over the last 6 years. Total cost including a used battery was around $200 total.
    The hardest part is diagnosing the problem correctly! Fixing the problem is the easy part.
