Tain came to my school on Monday and talked/played with the jazz ensemble. Being in one of the jazz classes, I got to watch. He was an extremely cool guy and was sensational on the drums, a "force of nature" if you will.
Tain is a modern master--no doubt about it. He and guys like Brian Blade and Gregory Hutchinson are carrying on the lineage of Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Tony Williams and all of the last generation of jazz drummers, and I for one am amazed by the new generation. They hold their own and then some!
1. He has good technique. Unfortunately, we are influenced by the nonsense we see on MTV/Muse, whatever, and think drummers get their speed/power from their arms, but power and speed come from keeping your arms still at one's side, thus keeping your wrists and hands controlled. Being "in shape" in the conventional sense has ZERO to do with it.
"Coltrane was unable to do slow tunes though" That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard in my life! What about his album with Johnny Hartman or ask any musician who saw Coltrane live if he could play slow tunes or ballads or just listen to Crescent, or his classic rendition of Soul Eyes.

Tain, don't hurt 'em.

Brandford tried his best to be right for this song but nobody can be like Coltrane. It 's a life experience. It's not just music.
I love how messy his feel is, all over the place but in the zone and melodic haha.
Jeff "Tain" Watts has the sense of Art Taylor and the speed (or pretty close) to D. Chambers... sick!
the real deal
damn those sonors sound sexual
Someone really, seriously post this entire tune, I can't find my CD.
my band director was his band director lol
vamo dogui!
reminds me alot of elvin, despite the obvious music influence.,..
A pox on the person who disliked this.
2. A good drummer knows where the drums are located on his kit and doesn't need to look, just as a pianist need not.
and some of us know how to spell!
what's the name of This Song?
???????????????????????????????????????
