I'm looking at the fans and I have a simple question: When you use an exhaust fan like this then you create negative pressure in the crawlspace. So, nature hates a vacuum so replacement air has to come from somewhere. Otherwise the exhaust fan will no longer do it's job. Knowing the space above is not sealed and there is lots of air gaps between the floor and area below - are we not simply taking conditioned air and pumping it outside? Does this not drive up heating cost?
I like the idea of removing the air so you reduce radon. I do NOT like using the conditioned air from the living space to do it.
My crawl space is only about 18” high so I don’t want to wiggle over to the foundation vent after the installation for adjustments to the timer or humidistat. Are there any crawl space venting systems that are mounted or can be serviced from the outside?
I am not aware of one, but if you find one, I hope you let us know.
I know this is an old video but we just purchased a condo from 1966 with a finished basement and the only ventilation is a 8*16 crawl space vent which probably needs to be addressed. The basement is 450sqft. Do I get this far or the Panasonic ERV? We are based in NJ
Hey Michael, thanks for more great info. Question: Which of the two venting systems do you suggest? - the Panasonic WhisperLine In-Line Fan Model FV-10NLF1E or the Lomanco PVC1 Foundation Vent Fan? Sounds like they both move a similar amount of air out of crawlspaces...do you prefer one over the other, or are both needed? Thank you
Francis Valerio Thank you so much for the comment. Lomanco is our standard install.
I installed this vent fan in Feb; all good. However, I wish I had seen your GREAT point (below) about keeping the vent fan ON at ALL times to remove soil gases during ALL of the seasons - humid or not. I didn't recall your tip and when I installed the vent according to Lomanco's install instructions, it was already "pre-set", so I left it there. It didn't even turn on until spring hit, and then only intermittently, so I still had a musty smell. That is when I decided to leave ON all the time and after only 1 day of it being ON, musty smell went down and now, after a week I can't even get a whiff of mustiness. Most importantly, my dog's eyes are clearer than any other spring in her 6 yrs of life!
So glad we could assist you. Thank you so much for your views and interest.
Thanks for the fine video. I'm in the piedmont area of NC. 1800 sf crawlspace with 3 ft average height equates tO 5400 cf. What size Lemanco Fan(s) and how much makeup needed ? 6 mil vapor barrier. I am hesitant to open even one wall vent, which seems to defeat the purpose. Don't mind keeping closed and drawing from inside the house, think subfloor penetrations are sufficient enough to avert air being drawn from outside at frame.
One fan would work.
You suggest 1 Lemanco pv1 for 5400 cu ft.but I only have a vapor barrier that is nestled against bottom of wall.Wouldn't I need more than 1 ?
Sorry, Completly missed the total CF... you would need two. One fan can cover up to 5000CF.
What if my crawl spaces is not in encapsulated. It’s just a regular crawl space with dirt floor. It gets very humid under there.
Then you are vulnerable to humidity which can cause moisture, mold, and odors
Would running these in a crawlspace that is not encapsulated still help with humidity levels?
Yes, the most important thing for your crawl space is a dehumidifier considering you need good air
Where does the air come from that exhausts out the fan? Is leaving another foundation vent open necessary to supply air?
Great question! We answered it here: ua-cam.com/video/ySTgO4PQT7M/v-deo.html.
If the crawl space is sealed wouldn't I need two fans? One to supply and one to exhaust.
Michael thanks for the information. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I live in middle TN and getting ready to make the Encapsulation transition. It makes sense to add this fan but what happens when the fan is not running? Does the humid air travel from outside back through the fan or does the fan seal itself when not running? Thanks
From Lomanco's product description: "Its operation is controlled with a temperature switch/humidistat control which activates the motor at or above 50ºF and is user adjustable for the varying levels of relative humidity in your crawl space." Hope this helps!
Crawl Space Ninja when the fan is not running what prevents humid air from outside from coming in? Does the fan seal itself when it is not running to prevent air flow?
It does not seal itself. We always recommend leaving the vent fan running to keep the humid air out, but more importantly to remove any soil gases that accumulate inside the crawl space after the other vents have been sealed.
Crawl Space Ninja If I install a vent fan do I still need a dehumidifier? I am going to encapsulate my crawlspace in Wisconsin. Is the fan even necessary? Humidifier?
If I instal the vent fan do I have to leave another vent open to balance it? Do I install both systems? I am going to seal the crawlspace.
Will running this along with a dehumidifier cause the dehumidifier run constantly and work harder from the endless new supply of air? would it keep drawing in outside air/ air from the conditioned living space through small openings?
The ventilation fan doesnt not bring new air in, the vent fan is there to take air out of the crawl space when its fully encapsulated. So it wouldnt affect your Dehumidifier.
How much electricity does this consume/month? Thanks
Great question, I don't see that information in their literature, it says it uses a 1/2 of an amp. Sorry, I hope that helps, thanks for watching.
If you have a vapor barrier, and other
Wise enclosed crawl, could you add a dehumidifier and close off vents? I guess what I'm asking is, must you completely seal ( encapsulate) the crawl...
Sealing vents and adding a dehumidifier is good to control humidity. However, if you do that you will need to have a vent fan, like the one in this video, installed in one of your vents to make sure soil gasses do not build up in your crawl space and come into your home.
Do the other vents need to be sealed up after installing this vent fan to prevent pulling in moist air?
Yes, if your goal is to control humidity with a dehumidifier.
what about for radon i got a average reading of 4.6 during the winter, will a double fan work for a 960sqft craw space? btw the highest i got was 7.2 over a two day test and lowest as 2.0.
The EPA recommends 1 CFM per 50 sq' of crawl space, but your state building code may be more or less strict. Check out this video for more info: ua-cam.com/video/4mFQZbNKkXU/v-deo.html
So if you seal other vents can you use this vent fan without a dehumidifier?
Yes, you will need this vent fan to prevent any soil gasses from building up in the crawl space after sealing the vents. If the humidity level in the crawl space is above 60% it is recommended to install a dehumidifier.
You state this one fan can do a 5500 SQFT crawl space so I ordered it. paperwork that comes with it says you need two of them to handle a 1500 SQFT crawl space @ 2feet tall (3000 Cubic feet).... that's a big difference!!! if paperwork is correct NOT worth the $179 i just paid..... it is a solid system and does run smooth.
The information in this video for the Lomanvo PCV1 Ventilation Fan is based off of EPA guidelines for encapsulated crawl spaces. The guidelines state 1cfm for every 50sq ft. (110x50=5500sqft). The Lomanco guidelines that come with the fan are for a vented crawl space setup and not based on EPA guidelines for encapsulated crawl spaces.
can I hardwire a longer cord to it?
That is your choice, i would consult an electrician unless you are one.
I talked to Mary Beth about what all I need for encapsulating my crawlspace and I have a 1,300 sqft home/crawlspace and she said I need 3 of these fans and to adjust the % to 40% in summer and 20% in winter. After watching this video you said the fan will do 5,500 sqft and run it 24/7. Can you help me with this dilemma please
Good question! it will truly depend on if your crawl space is encapsulated or not. if you encapsulate your crawl space and seal all the vents you will only need one for up to 5,000 sqft. But if you do not encapsulate the requirements are different. Here is some more documentation diy.crawlspaceninja.com/blog/lomancopcv1
Oh yes, I will be encapsulating my crawlspace so I will only need 1 vent and I guess it does not matter which vent to put it in, i have 10 vents
Perfect!, normally we try to install the vent fan opposite of where the dehumidifier is. This helps promote some air flow
my crawlspace has no vent what do I do?
Do you have any issues in your crawl space?
Do you want the fan blowing inwards or out? We just recently installed 2 and both are pointing inwards.
You would want them to blow outward, not bringing in more humid air into the crawl space.
Michael, you state in this video that according to EPA ventilation standards that one Lomanco fan would be enough to do a 5500 sqft crawlspace. However, according to the installation instructions two fans should be used for a 1500 sqft crawlspace with 2' height. My home is in the Knoxville area with a 1630 sqft with a 5' height dropping to 2' in places. Would you still recommend one fan. Also, I find the 18" electrical cord to be very limiting and will not reach the closest outline. I assume an extension cord would not be a good idea.
Our numbers are based on an encapsulated crawl space. Lomanco's numbers are based on a vented crawl space and are just a manufacturer recommendation, not a standard. We typically will run electrical to the fan so that no extension cord is needed.
Crawl Space Ninja Thanks for the clarification.
Thanks again for great videos and information for us DIY types.
I have a 2200 sq ft crawlspace. I'm looking to install 1 of the Lomanco PVC1 fans...should I install it towards the center area of the crawlspace or a corner? Thanks.
The location will depend on where your dehumidifier is, also depending on where the door is located. We try to keept them in a linear pattern when possible.
Michael approximately how much does this fan cost? Thank you!
Hey Vicki, you can find more information about the vent fan on our website: goo.gl/jfphab
I'm looking to purchase one of the fans. We live in the humid south and cannot quite afford the encapsulation at the moment. Would a crawl space fan with a dehumidistat be a step in the right direction to decreasing moisture and humidity in the crawl space? Also, do these fans pull air from the inside of crawl space to outside or air from outside to inside?
The vent fan AND dehumidifier is a great start! The vent fans do pull the air from the crawl space to the outside, negative pull
PSA: this Lomanco fan is LOUD! Definitely NOT a quiet fan.
Hi BJ, is the fan touching the block directly. Sometimes adding some butyl tape or other insulated tape between the fan and wall can dampen the vibration.
You always talk about these exhust fans but no input
We want to create a negative pressure in the crawl space. If your local municipality requires an input you can do that though. We have some around us that require that.
@@CrawlSpaceNinja wouldnt adding a inlet still cause negative pressure?
