Love this song! Was huge back in the day. The thing with this sort of music it's not about vocal perfection it's about a raw feeling. So many great bands have singers that are perfect for their sound, but would not win a talent show.
Yeah she couldn't sing in any of the pubs or clubs cause she was only 15 or 16 when this song came out... And her big brother was one of the band members too. So he was always super protective of her being exposed to inappropriate situations & I remember him being staunch in a few interviews. They where such a good band. I saw them live once & they killed it 🤙🙌❤️
I feel like that mix of rock music and pop vocals was huge in the 90s. Especially for teenage girls. I was 7 when this song came out and I was OBSESSED… especially with the lead singer. I wanted to be pop/punk vibes like her. I wanted the eye brow piercing too! I feel like Australian artists sometimes break some of the genre rules that people usually apply.
I should add that this song takes a lot of Australians back in time and is super nostalgic. So even thought the vocals might not be amazing and the music is an acquired taste, it’s just one of those tracks that you hear and it takes you back in time.
To be fair Ella was in high school when she made this song and her voice was still shy. She has a delicate nature not all female rock or metal singers are rough and masculine or from trailer parks. This was their earlier sound. She was only 16 here. When the group separated they went out on their own. She later had a far more different mature sound that suited her voice far better in a group called The Verses. To me she actually sounded very much like Fleetwood Mac in some of her songs. One I love is The Verses: Want Everything.

Killing Heidi is very reminiscent for me! Takes me back to being a teenager, the time of peak Avril Lavigne, Evanescence, low rise jeans, thin layered belts, heavy eyeliner, etc, that strong female vocalist punk rock thing. The singing may not be hugely technical, but it wasn't about that. I think at the end of the day you're hearing it in 2022, not the early 2000s (as a wannabe emo teenager) and that makes a difference!

Love love Killing Heidi, they were one of my favourite bands when I was younger. Still love them now, they’re playing at my footy teams opening game of the season this weekend.
Something special about seeing them live, the band *was* sick, something else came out on-stage - some familial vibe greater than the sum of its parts.
So many memories of these 90s bangers on the car radio when i was a kid. You hit the jackpot when you'd get like this song, a U2 track, followed by backstreet boys and aqua driving with your mum on a Saturday arvo. So much nostalgia. This genre was was folk pop rock in the 90s

You do a lot of "crazy vocalists", she's definitely not that and I don't think was ever presented that way, this was just a kinda cool band from back in the day. Think she wrote the songs at least. Its funny I think we used to tolerate mediocrity a little more, now it's all these huge vocal moments on the voice and etc and we expect people to spew mind-blowing fire. No one was really expecting that from some shitty garage band in 1998. It was more a "scene".
You need to put this in the context of it being 1999 and being an angsty teen. Put some fake dreads in, black eyeliner, low rise ripped jeans and an oversized band t-shirt.
I didn’t like the song when it came out but now when I hear it I find myself liking it more, maybe for the fond memories of the year that it came out 🤷🏻♂️ I appreciate that you still have your honest opinion, not every reaction is going to take your breath away or blow your mind. Everyone has different tastes that’s the beauty of music, what might not be for you can be for someone else
1999 was a bit of a unique feeling time of Australian music, going with a grunge/metal/punk kinda sound like frenzle romp, regurgitator etc. killing Heidi definitely not one of our best, but a staple and honorable mention none the less
'I'm not loving her voice'.... babe, I dont wanna throw rubbish at you when you come to Australia, go check out Mascara, Outside of me ..... She was 15 when they recorded this, I think their manager overproduced in the studio, they are much more mature now.
The vocal style is a distinct vibe, very much late 90's/early 00's combo of a light vocal styling with harder music - which for those of us from that era, is incredibly nostalgic. Her voice got stronger as she matured (she was 15 or 16 at time of this release), but i think the lighter tone with the bigger music style is a signature style. I don't personally think it "doesn't suit", it's just not the conventional sound - which I think it kind of the point - not all grunge has to be a heavy vocal. Ella isn't a power vocalist. She's the lead singer of a band. Those two are incredibly different roles, imo
This song is very about the juxtaposition of her sweet voice and the grunge instrumental. At the time grunge was huge in Australia.. this bordered on pop but was *grunge* .. about the same time as silverchair was popular.. but I could be wrong.. my memory is a little foggy from back then.. for reasons 😂 Adding to this.. her voice matured and became a LOT more powerful.. still, I love her voice in this.. although recordings are very ‘produced’, live they were brilliant! AND I saw them live in concert last Sunday.. THEY. WERE.AWESOME! I noticed some of the high notes were avoided, but that could have been illness, or the dust (it was super dusty) or maybe lack of practice? Regardless very well done 💕
Slightly harsh - I guess being Aussie and having grown up that era, her voice and part of Killing Heidi, was iconic and part of the song and Killing Heidi's style and who they were. They were part of that late 90s, early 00s Pop-Rock landscape in Australia and had a few hits. Ella Hooper's look and gentle kindly ways in media interviews etc... they were a very likeable and approachable part of the music scene and got on well with other acts too. They broke out with this song and were the babies of the Aussie music industry back then as people said - they were only young teenagers then, but they would be part of the music scene for years to come. And again, with Weir - it saw alot of radio air-play for them at the time, a break-out hit for them. We had a number of 90's bands in Australia that were formed by quite talented teenagers and were still mid-late teens when they broke out in the mainstream - most famously and globally were Silverchair, but we had Killing Heidi and others too, very young, fledgling bands with instant break-out success. Often it was thanks to exposure on the Triple J station via ABC Radio (The national broadcaster, akin to BBC) and the Recovery program on ABC TV, the Big Day Out Festival Concerts too (Which featured many big and upcoming Aussie and International bands).
Always thank Ella for taking the time to have a chat with the lead female vocal of a band called Girl Vs Ghost and offering lots of tips and encourgement. GvG supported Ella's band: this was after Killing Heidi

I really appreciate that you just didn't kiss up and say you liked something you didn't. Personally, I love all the contradictions between in the music and singing, etc kind of Killing Heidi's style.
Very good to a reactioner be honest and say ''I don't like this''. I don't think you were rude, just honest. You can see sometimes reaction people don't like something, but they won't say it. As Bruce Springsteen says'' one mans whiskey is another mans wine.
Having things that generally don't go together are what can make music interesting. Like symphonic metal or a violin in a punk rock song. Sometimes it doesn't matter how good singer you are when a thousand other good singers have done exactly the same thing.
Hey it's alright mate! I appreciate your opinions and commentaries, I grew up listening to Killing Heidi.. but I can understand and agree with the debut vocals 👍
I love Ella too! Yep only a 16yr old here. Maybe he would’ve liked Mascara better. We love her anyway. Looking forward to seeing Killing Heidi next month on the Gold Coast as part of the Red Hot Summer tour! Go Ella!
This song was definitely everywhere here when it came out. I was 20 at the time and not so into their sound. But it definitely brings back memories and now I'm off to see if I can dig up some recent things of Ella's to see what she is like now. :)
Love Killing Heidi , I love Ella’s voice but then was in high school when indie and alternative music was so popular. Ella does an amazing cover of Boys in town by the Divinyls. This song is their biggest so if u don’t like it then abort mission I guess. It’s a matter of taste really . I love that they have backed themselves the whole way and still tour and Aussies love them 💖
While Ella may not have the power or range of Vanessa Amorosi or other great Aussie singers, a lot of great Aussie music is based on hard rock pub bands and Killing Heidi has that vibe and style in spades.
You should hear the song that they won the Triple J Unearthed competition with to get signed. Can't remember the name of it right now. Ella was 15 when they won Unearthed
Back in the days when I used to actively want to be a singer and I ran in a crowd full of singers, I met a guy who said he'd met her and she was the best singer he'd ever heard.. Personally I don't think she's that high on the list.. She's not on Aretha or Vanessa Amorosi or Patti level but I believe that she's probably a very good vocalist no less.
It's the first time I have to disagree with you. Love her voice. I guess you'll have to listen to more of her. She was 16 when this song was released, try Mascara , probably a better song for her. Other great Aussies I'd like you to react to would be the Radiators- Standing in a room full of diamonds. Anything from Silverchair or some Johnny O'Keeffe
not sure if this is relevant but i feel it's important to point out some cultural/industry differences at play here. Australia's population is currently about 10% of the size of the US so the arc of going from being a small local band to nationwide fame was possibly easier than it was in the US at the time (remember this was an era before social media and you tube could make someone famous overnight) - i just feel that the popularity of Killing Heidi and the affection this song garners, is more to do with the overall song (how cute Ella was) and that in terms of nationwide recognition they were more accessible than say some pub band of the same era in some random state of the US. New Zealand is even smaller again and there are amazing bands from my youth that wouldn't have gained traction in Australia for the same reasons.
Ella is a good friend of my friend Ash from the band 67 Special. She sung on one of their early songs “Curious Minds “. I think you would like her voice on that track but don’t think it is on UA-cam. Ash himself has an amazing voice. You should listen to “hey there bomb” by them.
Second comment (lol) This song musically is very much about the juxtaposition of her sweet voice and the grunge instrumental. At the time grunge was huge in Australia.. this bordered on pop but was *grunge* .. about the same time as silverchair was popular.. but I could be wrong.. my memory is a little foggy from back then.. for reasons 😂 Adding to this.. her voice matured and became a LOT more powerful.. still, I love her voice in this.. although recordings are very ‘produced’ and played up the ‘sweetness’.. live they were brilliant! In fact I saw them live in concert last Sunday.. THEY. It is very much about the juxtaposition between her voice and the music.
Hey it's alright mate! I appreciate your opinions and commentaries, I grew up listening to Killing Heidi.. but I can understand and agree with the debut vocals 👍
Bro lovin the Oz reactions cheers dare cuz ✊️
I love Ella too! Yep only a 16yr old here. Maybe he would’ve liked Mascara better. We love her anyway. Looking forward to seeing Killing Heidi next month on the Gold Coast as part of the Red Hot Summer tour! Go Ella!
Grew up with this. Haven't heard it in so long so I loved it
This song was definitely everywhere here when it came out. I was 20 at the time and not so into their sound. But it definitely brings back memories and now I'm off to see if I can dig up some recent things of Ella's to see what she is like now. :)
They have a song called ‘I Am’ and it was the Spider-Man 2 song (tobey Maguire version)
Love Killing Heidi , I love Ella’s voice but then was in high school when indie and alternative music was so popular. Ella does an amazing cover of Boys in town by the Divinyls. This song is their biggest so if u don’t like it then abort mission I guess. It’s a matter of taste really . I love that they have backed themselves the whole way and still tour and Aussies love them 💖
A brother and sister band, Jessie and Ella Hooper, Ella the lead singer was 16 at the time this was recorded.
Killing Heidi was the first CD i ever bought, as a kid, Ella - ooph boy crush :D . Still listen to them today.
Aussie music in the late 90's early 2000's is so underated
Wow, I remember this being played to death on the radio back in 2000.
From what I understand there was a campaign to save the local weir in their local Violet Town, VIC at the time
Listen to her live version of 'With a little help from my friends' with Dan Sultan. That's brilliant!!
She was only 16 bro..
My fav song by them is called "a jar labeled small" it's epic
She's actually got some pipes. She's only about 16 here, and it's in the first couple of songs they ever did. Sounds great to me still though.
It's 2005 Australia mate, sitting at the lights in ya car with ya JVC head set blasting this.
The Superjesus - Down Again
I think you've seen Ella in one of those clips with a lot of singers together.
Their best song is Mascara which I think you’ll like a bit better!
Ella is a babe. Then and now. I believe Killing Heidi 's song "I Am" was the main Spiderman movie song. Check out their other songs.
I like killing Heidi but I appreciate your opinion - I like the fact that you will “tell it how it is”, so when you love it, we know it’s the truth 💗
Man, this song was huge when it came out... I guess you had to be there haha
She was young here. She’s a lovely girl and I love Killing Heidi. I think this was their first hit. So long ago. But I love Ella.
Have a look at more recent stuff from Ella Hooper as she was only a teenager when this was released. Thanks for honest reviews.
Agreed. :-)
not sure if this is relevant but i feel it's important to point out some cultural/industry differences at play here.
Ahhh my teenage years 💜
Ella is a good friend of my friend Ash from the band 67 Special. She sung on one of their early songs “Curious Minds “. I think you would like her voice on that track but don’t think it is on UA-cam. Ash himself has an amazing voice. You should listen to “hey there bomb” by them.
Another great Aussie rock band lead by a female singer that is worth listening to, is the Rogue Traders.
I think her vocals were overproduced on this album. She sounds great in 'Outside of Me' and 'I Am' from later albums.
Second comment (lol)
This song musically is very much about the juxtaposition of her sweet voice and the grunge instrumental. At the time grunge was huge in Australia.. this bordered on pop but was *grunge* .. about the same time as silverchair was popular.. but I could be wrong.. my memory is a little foggy from back then.. for reasons 😂
Adding to this.. her voice matured and became a LOT more powerful.. still, I love her voice in this.. although recordings are very ‘produced’ and played up the ‘sweetness’.. live they were brilliant! In fact I saw them live in concert last Sunday.. THEY. WERE.AWESOME! 💕🇦🇺
I noticed some of the high notes were avoided, but that could have been illness, or the dust (it was super dusty) or maybe lack of practice? Regardless very well done 💕
Think she'll grow on you as you see her getting older and maturing, having said that I loved this when it came out and still do.
Their family is music asf hippies bro even their parents are both pro at instruments and her mother was a singer her dad is awesome guitar bass player and other instruments
I find it funny that you don't like her singing in the rock part, coz that's my fav part, and I love the way she sounds there, lol
She is way better now and now songs more acoustic folk indie music
