You forgot to add one cost: the annual mandatory inspection. Plus, in your case and in the case of everyone who buys a used imported vehicle in Portugal, be warned about this: unless the first registration's month coincides with the portuguese registration's month, you'll have to pay the IUC in a different month from that of the annual inspection, unlike the domestic vehicles where the IUC and the inspection are due in the same month. You can check both dates on your Registration Certificate or Documento Único Automóvel (DUA) in Portuguese.
I think full coverage in California for a BMW would probably run around $1,000 per year., depends on the miles you drive and driving record. California DMV annual renewal for a BMW from 2013 probably around $500, depends on your purchase price as far as I can remember.
I did not know California had an annual renewal... in GA they had changed to "ad valorem" tax, which meant you paid all of the tax up front (which was a load of crap...) and just had a $25 annual renewal fee. Sounds like the insurance is about the same. Thanks for the reply David!
@@fulfillthegameoflife1998 Yes, here in California we have a yearly stamp. The DMV sends a different color sticker every year that we put on our license plate to show we are current. It's not cheap here, especially for newer cars.We also need a new smog certificate every two years.
Insurance cost in the US can vary greatly, depending on location, driving record, age and experience of the drivers, type of vehicle, coverage amount, and even credit score. The tax of cars is the biggest down to live in Portugal. The portuguese government think that car is not really a necessity to live in Portugal, they charge big in cars to invest in public transportation. They want people to use public transportation. The IUC (imposto único de Circulação - single circulation tax) is to maintain the municipal/national roads, that's why they are very good. That's why in Portugal we need to maintain the cars in good shape for them to last longuer, and a small car like a Toyota Aygo (the IUC is only 89€/year) it's only 1 dm3 and 109g/CO2/km, the bigger the car more you pay. I do think that is why we are one the least polluted countries in the world inside of developed countries and being the first world countries. Only Iceland, New Zealand and a few others are ahead of us. Other advantage for cars being to expensive, people inside the cities use the good and safe public transportation, that's why the advantage is that you never going to find traffic jams (only if there is one accident that cut the road). Even in the rush hour in Lisbon, is very rare (even with heavy rain in the winter) to be stop in a traffic jam for more than 30 minutes. PS: In the country there are one exception (that confirms the rule) that you can be stop in a traffic jam for more than 30 minutes, is when you come from south of Lisbon in the rush hour (from 7am to 10 am) and you need to cross the 25 April bridge (Golden Bridge Sister) to reach Lisbon.
