@@latricejames7832 Yes, you do have to straighten it if you want to cut it right once the first time. No, if you rarely wear your hair straighten, but you will have to trim it again once you straighten it, because hair isn’t fully stretched when it is curly, and not everyones curl pattern is the same in order for you to get a proper cut without it straighten.

True...hanging on to fried or excessively jacked up split ends only makes whatever hairstyle you're trying to have look worse. I've seen way too many BW who will hold on to bad ends just because its BSL or longer...only to look at another BW's hair that's healthy and say they want hair like that 🤔. They can potentially have it if they cut those ends ✂️💇🏾‍♀️! I do my own monthly dusting of my hair and get my major trims by my stylist...I don't use excessive heat. And whenever my stylist trims, she barely needs to take that much off.

@@candi1904 I've been loc'd for 7 years now and my hair is down to my lower back. It's surpassed the length it ever was relaxed or as a loose natural. Cutting off my relaxer was very liberating for me and the reason I decided to loc mine is because I didn't care for all the manipulation that braidouts and twistouts required. My relaxed hair would grow to a certain length and split on the same side all the time. This hair stylist trusted another one to cut off her damaged ends so that she could stop the further demise of the rest of her hair. It's her hair and she can do whatever she wants with it just like the rest of us.

    • @ktg8670

      @@candi1904
Of course hair isn't "alive", we all know that, Sis. No one specifically in this thread said what you mentioned...but when people I know refer to hair as "dead," it generally means your ends are either extremely heat damaged, excessive amounts of split ends, or you're literally missing substantial portions of your ends...meaning WHY would anyone want to hold on to something that isn't healthy and/or looks extremely odd?! I get it when some women will cut off portions in stages, as opposed to cutting it all at once....but even in that situation, at least they are getting rid of it. And yes, everyone's hair grows and should I say retains length at different rates and to different degrees. That is why especially as a BW, I do not ever compare my hair to someone else. My journey is exactly that...mine. And even if a woman wants to hold on to hair that literally looks damaged or chewed up/extremely uneven, that's still ultimately her choice...even if I don't comprehend it or see it as productive. Once hair has experienced a particular level of trauma/damage on the ends, it actually is in the best interest to cut your losses (literally) and begin a new hair regimen that gives it the proper TLC it deserves so it can thrive.
I started relaxing my hair every 10 to 12 weeks around 18 y/o. From the time I was around 6 y/o to present, I typically have kept my hair between APL to a few inches past BSL. I was raised in a home where using quality deep conditioning treatments with added oils on a weekly basis was the norm. Plus I was raised on the "you are what you eat," and what you put in your body has just as much impact as what you use on your skin and hair...and whether you have chin length hair, or to your behind, your hair is only "good" if you do everything you can to deter damage to your edges and ends. I know many women who relaxed their hair have had bad situations, but I found with the particular ones I know, damage often occured because they were over processing during touch-ups, using flat irons and other heat tools excessively at too high of a temperature for their particular hair, they frequently dyed their hair, or they used relaxers that was too harsh on their hair. A flat iron has never touched my hair, I do not dye my hair, and I strictly use a mild relaxer. I have never lost my edges or had ratty ends. My hair is currently all one length and around BSL.

I’m so lucky with my hairdresser who is my daughters best friend. I had almost waist length curly hair, when she asked me what I wanted I told her I wanted it all chopped off so it sat on my shoulders. Okay she said and proceeded to do exactly what I wanted. No ‘are you sure or ‘but it’s so long. To me, that’s what makes a great hairdresser, you know what you want and that’s should be what you pay for..

I went from hair that was several inches past my shoulder to a pixie cut in one go, and I about wanted to kill the stylist. He kept asking "are you sure this is what you want?" Yes! I get it, it's a big chop, but I was sick of long hair, long hair is not the thing that makes me pretty/feminine/confident/whatever. I LOVED my little pixie cut--it felt cute and it didn't hide my face or sit all heavy on my neck or use up a gallon of conditioner and it had so much personality--but I couldn't stand the people that wanted to go "Oh, but it was so long!"

    • @michcookies

The stylist I used to go to years ago would never cut my hair short, it was a few inches above my waist and also highlighted, so it was in terrible condition. I ended up going to a different salon to have it cut into a bob, and it’s been that length ever since. It’s frustrating than when the stylist doesn’t listen to you or is afraid to cut it short. Was very nearly taking her scissors and cutting a chunk off and saying ‘ well, now you have to'!
