Hi Maestro!...I have a question on the tuning of a sitar. I have mailed it on the email ID that you have provided in the comments. Thank you for the lovely tutorial.
Dear Sir, I'm learning Sitar for at about one year. I've a basic Tabla course of five years from Benaras Gharana. From multiple videos of you, Sri Parvej and many more, I've realised that you've a great depth in Hindustani classical vocal too. Now is this necessary to get some basic of HCM vocal to excel in Sitar ? I'll wait for your reply sir. Pranam🙏🏻
Dear Maestro Purbayan, your videos and playing are very helpfull in al meanings. I would like to ask you about something: Do the armonics on the first string (Ma) coincide with the fret ? In my sitar they don`t. Thank you again for sharing your wisdom. Greetings from Argentina
i've tuned the first string of my old Sitar (MA) in "F#", then C# and so on. You suggest to tune Ma in G, then D and so on. There's a lot of difference, but i admit that in this way, with a lower tuning, the sound have a more "grace", doing to the lot less tightness of the strings. Do you suggest to tune my sitar with Ma in G and not in F#, even if i have seen that many suggest to tune Ma in F# (including inside the Ravi Shankar book....)? In fact, i feel the strain now is too high...... Thanks so much for reply!
Great video! Can you figure any alternative to the original sympathetic sitar strings>>?= I mean can use strings meant for other string instrument ? thanks
I wonder if I can use other strings ( say: mandolin, or guitar) instead of sympathetic. I have a new pack of main strings (from India) but where I live I can't find sympathetic strings. Thanks .
Hi its Hamish from New Zealand. I put my tuner on the speaker of this video/ interview of Nikhil Banerjee to get the notes for Marwa! I've had the sympathetics tuned chromatically for the moment. The notes from the video he plays the scale D D# F# G# A(not used) B C# D. Im not sure if he starts with an open string. I assumed he did and I assumed you would want to tune the sympathetics from D too. Ive had my sitar tuned to C and have now changed to C# as I've read this is what Ravi and Nikhil usually tuned to, I think the sitar likes it too, I'm not keen to go higher. So Ive dropped that scale to C# D F G G#(not used) A# C C#. Ive Just realised my question is actually quite simple after writing all that... Do i tune the playing stings to correspond to the ragas scale? So instead of F# C# G# C# should i make it F C# G C#?? Im aware it wouldn't sound so nice. Also would I change the Chikari G# to G? Thanks, I'll link the video and remember there is 3 tanpuras waiting for you in Little River, NZ ua-cam.com/video/-AmK0LX1lEI/v-deo.html
My first main string goes out of tune very quickly after some meends. Very annoying. Any tips to keep in tune? I put sandpaper below the swan, I press the peg down hard and so on, but still, one 5 notes meend is enough to detune almost an entire half tone. Thank you
Many more videos coming in this series and other series!! Please like, share, subscribe 😊🙏🏼

It depends on the type of sitar
Thanks, but i've made a mistake. The Ma in G it's half tone higher and not a lot lower than Ma in F#. Nice video.
@@PurbayanChatterjee You may need lighter gauge strings

@@PurbayanChatterjee thanks, what about the 1st and 3rd string on the sitar?
@@PurbayanChatterjee so is that E or F with c# and is that A or A# with c#? Sorry it's hard to find info to translate. That seems odd

What make is your sitar? Also you might want to use some French chalk on the pegs so as to keep them tight
@@PurbayanChatterjee thank you! I will try that. I bought my sitar in Varanasi from Sherma & Co. I love your videos...
