FDS is pretty much what I need now. Das Geheimnis der Happy Hippo-Insel, I've encountered that game during my search. Title screen alone is already good stuff. Another good obscure choice is Otto's Ottifanten - Kommando Stortebeker. Would be awesome to hear VGM works like these more often.
I love FDS music. I know this is a radical simplification, but it's also a great way to get one's head around it: If NES is 5 NES sound channels, and Gameboy is 3 NES sound channels, plus one Turbografx16 sound channel, then the FDS is 5 NES sound channels, plus two TG16 sound channels. The additional channels on FDS are wavetable synthesis as is the third channel on the Game Boy. But the WS on GB is 4-bit, WS on MSX SCC is 8-bit, and WS on TG16 is 5-bit. I'm not sure what the WS bit level is on FDS. To my ears, it sounds comparable to TG16, so I'd guess (and this is just a guess) 5-bit. Anyone know the exact bit level, I'd be curious to know too. But anyway, like the Gameboy, this is a fusion of NES and TG16 sounds, but unlike the Gameboy, it's a no-compromises fusion of them (well, I suppose a truly no compromise fusion would be all 5 NES channels AND all 6 TG16 channels...but you get my point.) :-D
Thanks za909returns! In the time since I posted this, I have since found out that it is 6-bit just like you said. I believe the Virtual Boy is also 6-bit. Also, in my post, I said FDS has two Wavetable channels, but I think it actually only has one.
There is only one expansion channel for the FDS, not two. The fun thing about the expansion channel is that it has its own drawable lfo that can go fast.
hey grad1u5, i've got a few gameboy requests for you if you get in the mood for uploading some gameboy game soundtracks at some point: zelda oracle of ages and seasons are both pretty great, pretty standard OSTs. now for some obscure ones: LUCLE, an interesting puzzle game that no one's heard of, and Das Geheimnis der Happy Hippo-Insel, an obscure and bad german game with mind blowing music. keep going with FDS though, this stuff is great too!
Question: Why does the soundtrack play twice? If the second play-through is supposed to be the "no additional effects" version... well, there doesn't seem to be any actual effects on the first play-through!
ガチでファミコンサウンド最高峰の曲だと思う

全曲素晴らしいね✨
この感動はこの時代を体験したものの特権だね。
ワイヤーアクションといい、BGMといい全てが最高峰です!!
Stages 1,4,6 bgm is memorable. Very catchy if you've played the game back in late 80s and listening to it now.
I played this game from morning till late night just to pass the first and second stage 30 years ago!! Brings back memories!! Oh my childhood!!

Probably one of the best soundtracks for the Famicom of all time.

Loved this game. Thanks for the soundtrack upload.

The stage 1 music reminds me so much of La Mulana, haha. Probably not a coincidence.
Such a rare example of a game using the FDS channel all throughout gameplay!

ステージ5 マジ神曲
I like stage 5s music because it so upbeat.

The Best of Nerd Noise Radio You weren't far off, the FDS play 6-bit wavetables with 64 steps, so it's like a 64x64 graph.
Thanks za909returns!

NICE GAME OST 🎮🎵👍
Well on a second look, they do seem a little different, but I'm not sure what the effect is exactly.
First play is mono, which is authentic to the real hardware, while the second play is a faked stereo effect.

.....Where does 06:15 actually play in the game? I don't recall ever hearing it.
