  • Watch us CREATE THE COSMOS with the Canon 5DS to achieve 8K resolution!
    The Canon 5DS has a 50.6 megapixel which is equivalent to an
    8688 X 5792 aspect ratio. Believe it or not I actually had to scale down to 89% to fit the 8K aspect ratio of 7680 X 4320.
    We shot image sequences with the "high speed continuous mode" on which allowed us to capture at around 2-4 frames per second.
    We then brought images it into After Effects, turned them into 24fps image sequences. We made 1280x720 QuickTime proxy files to edit with in premiere and then brought them back into After Effects for final export.
    The 8K compressed video was around 14GB in size.
    8K resolution may seem like overkill for most platforms but not for us. We are working on a film (CREATING THE COSMOS) made for IMAX©, Giant Screen, and Dome / Planetarium theaters.
    There are a handful of full dome theaters that are 8K ready with an aspect ratio of 8192 X 6144.
    We actually presented a 5 minute extended trailer (will release video soon) at the annual Giant Screen Cinema association conference this past September. It was an out-of-body experience seeing our work projected onto the 2nd largest screen in North America (AMC Metreon) with the newest IMAX© laser projection system.

    Took about 4 hours to upload, then another 90 minutes for UA-cam to process it. Compressed QuickTime file was around 14GB.

      +Shanks FX you build your Quicktime file in Prores codec ? 8K is ok but need a very huge size screen to benefit. 4K just became a reality for most of us ^^. Your practical effect inspire me, but im more a CGI guy, i probably work with HDR open EXR file, because you can stretch the color and exposure so much with the bracketing technic, i need to do fisheye lens capture in HDR for my skymap also for specular and refraction effect for glasse or water rendering, that's why im interest with practical effect, rendering and animating polygone is so much time consuming even with tool like Zbrush.

    After watching on multiple screens I've noticed the higher the resolution the more twinkle the stars have.
    Sure the twinkle will change for every resolution.

    I used to make timelapse and stopmotion at high resolution back in 2006 when 480p was still normal, getting 720p hd ready was already a feat on its own haha. Funny how you can use a photo camera with high enough resolution but just different timing (not real time filming) to jump ahead of what tech is able to do.

    That being said, playing this video muted with the "Inside Out" soundtrack playing in the background is positively mesmerizing. (I recommend track 23, "Joy turns to Sadness")

    Thanks for your video "Creating The Cosmos." Years ago I have been observing and experimenting different media such as prisms which breaks up light into colors which replicates stars when you travel @ the speed of light, soap bubbles which replicates clusters of galaxies, life/death cycles of stars as the individual bubbles pop in and out of existence as well as changing colors, or colliding galaxies, or if you squirt liquid soap into water and stir it slightly you can imagine nebulae in fluid motion or stir it vigorously you can see a nebula forming stars. I hope that if the producers come up with new movies Planet of the Apes in which you can use the medium replicating the reality of interstellar or galactic space travel in the future 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

  • @MrEMT4466
    @MrEMT4466 9 років тому

    I sure would like to be able to do that! I've done something like that through liquid soap which replicates nebulae and run water through liquid soap which replicates star formation which in turn transform into galaxy formation which transforms into galactic collisions!!!!!!

    Great stuff as always. What are your favorite additions youve discovered for manipulating? Rubbing alchohol and soap? I see you're using a needle now for precision. Very cool

    • @ShanksFX1

      It varies. Just have a lot of cleaning supplies on hand and go with the flow. (just no BLEACH)

    • @Malachism
      @Malachism 6 років тому

      Coolcool. I see you use a rectangular type dish now instead of the pane of glass with clamps over a black fabric. what's your set up now? It seems much more compact. Do i see a bottle of Makers Mark to the left of the rubbing alchohol? lol Even the stars seem different. Are they still paper towel flakes? I personally don't like working with the stars and the milk at the same time. i like to layer them later.

    The Canon 5ds shoots 8k video?

    • @smokey267
      @smokey267 9 років тому

      +Raoh Shiro No it shoots very high resolution stills and when you create a timelapse at full resolution you can combine all the stills into a video. For an 8k video. The resolution of each still needs to be just over 35MP so when you have a 50MP sensor, you have lots of room to play around with.
      In regards to straight video the 5DS only shoot 1080p at 30fps.
