A story not forgotten in Lancashire - a painting ‘The surrender of Preston’ adorns the Blackpool’s Council Chamber, but Preston isn’t landlocked (as stated) it’s been a port since the 14th century.

That was the only bit that threw me as Preston Docks (before the whole modernisation) was one of the main reasons for its prominence and later status as the administrative capital of Lancashire. I'm 64 now but still remember well the first time I read Devil water. It was a beat up old paperback one of the first books I ever read around 1970 that wasn't a science fiction or sword and sorcery novel. I have to admitt it was the cover painting of the buxom Scottish lass. After reading the first few chapters I was hooked on th😅e story. I'm an American but very interested in history. Later on I got my Bachelor's degree in History. The military history of the Jacobite rebellions fascinated me as we didn't learn anything about that time in the states unless you took a course on British history in college. I was stationed in Germany back in the 80s and hoped to get over to Britain for a short trip but this was the height of the cold war and we stayed on alert almost constantly. It's still on my bucket list
One of my Scottish ancestors was Dugal MacQueen. He was captured at Preston and ultimately sentenced to transportation. Sent by ship to Maryland where he was sold into 7 years of indentured servitude to a William Holland. I'm descended from his second wife, whom he married in Maryland and their daughter Ruth. If you prefer famous people, he's also the ancestor of the famous movie star Steve McQueen, my distant cousin. 😎
Our ancestors may have known each other. My grandfather five generations back was a Jacobite leader of Clan Chisholm, known as The Chis. He was transported also, first they tried selling him in Jamaica but he was too fair skinned. Finally sold and indentured in Port Tobacco Maryland.
@@rboston33 quite possible! Although they probably would have been on different ships, because to the best of my knowledge the ship carrying Dugal didn't stop in Jamaica.
I am descended from Dugal and Grace through their so Thomas McQueen Sr., then his son Thomas Jr., then Uriah, then to Elizabeth who married a Tresenriter. Uriah is who Steve McQueen is descended from.
I’m so happy I found this video! I just subscribed and will be watching more! I have been researching my ancestry and found the my 7th great grandfather was Alexander Bruce who was captured in 1715 and sent to America of the ship Elizabeth & Anne. Had this not happened I wouldn’t be here today!

@Casey McIntosh just think, if he hasn't been captured you could now be living in Glasgow eating scotch pies and deep fried Mars bars, and wondering when your heart attack is due😊😊.
The historical novel "Devil Water" by Anya Seton details much about the English Jacobite uprising of 1715, and the battle of Preston, centered on the tragic Radcliffe family (Earls of Derwenwater). Recommended!!
Visited Athol Estate several times. They have salmon fishing, the Hilton Hotel, and the last remaining official private army in the United Kingdom. friendly, athletic, spirited people, great dance and song. Windsor Great Park is a favorite. Met Price Charles in his Aston Martin there, also his parents at the Diamond Jubilee.
Liked and subscribed after 5 minutes. I am McIntosh and you have filled in a few blank places that I have been researching for over 30 years now.. My immediate blood forefather "escaped" to America to join 2 of his Uncles already here. All 3 where part of the Boston Tea Party and other significant Battles of our American Revolution. If I could visit Scotland and look you up, I would show you some of the original documents and personal letters I have. I would gladly buy the first several rounds, and ask and answer hundreds of questions. Most of all I would hope to have a new friend with a shared history. By the way. We have many counties with McIntosh and other Scot names. An entire mountain range in eastern Kentucky named after McIntosh. Legend has it because so many McIntosh settled there and documents show they settled there because it reminded them so much of the Highlands of home. GOD Bless you Sir. Continue your journey.

I live very close to Preston and the layout hasn't changed a huge amount since that 1715 battle. It's interesting walking around and trying to imagine how hard it would have been for the government troops to attack. I also find it interesting that Preston was the site for a battle in the civil that also featured the Scots, not far from the same ground the jacobite fought on.
In retrospect, there were other ports that the Jacobites might have used; Lancaster, Sunderland Point and even Preston itself were all substantial ports in the 18th century
Always find these history lessons really interesting, I have a quick question about what was said about Preston, you said it was landlocked, Preston has a port so I’m confused (I’m a Lancastrian now living in Scotland) 👌👌👌
I know this is off topic, but can someone explain why the rightful King and Prince Charlie were called pretenders to the throne of England and Scotland. They were the rightful heirs to the throne! I am flummoxed by this. Thank you!
As a proud Englishman this is a brilliant history lesson, it’s balanced, funny and educational. The British Family is complex and Americans will find this a great education, Americans lack the education to understand the complexity of who the British are, and how over thousands of years these islands have forged their identities through political change, alliances and war.. yet after all this We Are A British Family..
@@cplmpcocptcl6306 Yep. And us Texans don't understand anything because of our Texas drawl. BTW- the American southern accent originates from the Scottish and Irish that came here, usually as slave or servant.
@@alexinburlesontx9967 no Irish or Scots came here as slaves. Indentured Servitude is not slavery, especially compared to the chattel slavery which predominated the New World. Nah, the hardships that the Irish endured upon immigration mostly came from classical views of "whiteness." Benjamin Franklin summarized it best when writing his own beliefs about the wave of immigrants rushing to join our new nation. By his estimation, anyone who wasn't a Protestant, Anglo-Saxon Brit, or Saxon German - was going to dilute the whiteness of America. Race has always been a nebulous construct used to justify the brutality of the ruling class. At various points throughout American history, "race" has been leveraged against the Irish, Germans, Italians, Eastern Europeans, Black, Latino, Asian, and now Middle Eastern communities. Which is wild because every single one of those groups with the exception of Blacks and Asians, have been fellow Caucasians.
Excellent presentation and great to hear the real details of our history. It never was a pure english -scottish thing. The americans should also be givem some information on their ' war of independence' Nothing is as clear cut as it seems.
@@Gary-bz1rf I'm not saying those weren't major factors, but claiming that the Scots were only ever reacting to outside influences is so reductionist it makes them/us seem like puppets on strings. And that wasn't the case. First you say people are not aware of their history, then you try to dumb things down. I would rather present this in a pan-European context where power struggles were going on all over Scotland, England (& Wales) and Ireland, as well as across Europe and between all major powers of the time, both on home territory and overseas.

There would have been little sympathy in Liverpool. In those days it had a castle but at the same time as the Jacobites were to arrive in 1715, the Government had agreed to demolish the Castle. The City was growing and was more interested in making money than whoever was on the throne 240 miles away.and was beginning to make big money at that
Listening to all this is making me want to reread my uni text books again. I was taught by Fiona Watson at Stirling uni the year the film braveheart came out and I remember her ranting about it. Those were the good days. Now I am a scotswoman in Northern Ireland hungry for my homeland.
There's the tired joke that if it weren't for alcohol, the Irish would have conquered the world by now. I guess the same could be said for Highlanders and their cultural distrust of borders? Poor Highlanders, always get talked into fights, talked over the border, and then end up being the last men willing to stand and fight whatever the odds. Great video, Bruce!

It's quite interesting because I come from Lancashire, so this isn't forgotten history and is seen as the most important and well known part of the Jacobite rising in 1715, so maybe not too well known, as I was first thinking as most people don't know that particular jacobite rising.
Great videos! How about a follow-up video about the escape from Newgate? Or have you already covered that? My ancestor John Mackintosh was a junior officer in the Mackintosh regiment, also held at Newgate (but not part of the escape). His defence (judging by letters of character reference written by firends of his and accessible online) was that he was an unwilling participant, pressured by the clan into joining the march south. His defence must have worked because he continued to have children in Scotland after that, including the daughter I'm descended from.
I have a distant ancestor on my father's side, William McPherson, who was a Jacobite soldier captured at Preston. He ended up being shipped to America and sold as a bond slave in Maryland.
The Vicar of Preston, Samuel Peplow (pronounced peeplow) preached to the Jacobites against insurrection. Geoge 1 when he heard, said "Peplow shall peep high" and made him an Archdeacon, with increased income and emoluments.

Hello cousin
I am descended from Dugal and Grace through their so Thomas McQueen Sr., then his son Thomas Jr., then Uriah, then to Elizabeth who married a Tresenriter. Uriah is who Steve McQueen is descended from.
@@rayback6672 very cool and nice to meet you! I'm descended from daughter Ruth McQueen Brown.
Our loss is America's gain.
Now I'm curious, were you searching UA-cam or Google when my.video came.up, and do you remember what the searvh term was? It's a long shot, but interesting to find out how we get discovered
@@ScotlandHistoryTours I searched “Jacobite war at Preston” on UA-cam. I have spent hours and hours watching videos on the people and places in my ancestry. It’s been a hell of a time!
@@ScotlandHistoryTours I want to add, I grew up a “ward of the state” with little to no family contact and no sense of self. Your videos have given me more of a sense of that than I thought possible. My husband and I both have strong ties to Scotland and hope to visit sometime in the future!
Ah, I'm nearly greetin'😢
@Casey McIntosh just think, if he hasn't been captured you could now be living in Glasgow eating scotch pies and deep fried Mars bars, and wondering when your heart attack is due😊😊.
Well done. Just seen this and now hope to see many more. Please keep up the excellent content
Top job mate. Loved your smarts.
The historical novel "Devil Water" by Anya Seton details much about the English Jacobite uprising of 1715, and the battle of Preston, centered on the tragic Radcliffe family (Earls of Derwenwater). Recommended!!
Thanks for the recommendation.

It's amazing that Joaquin Mcwhinney from Big Mountain offers us such in-depth knowledge into the history of Scotland, what an inspirational man!
Love your storytelling.
Interesting as I am a Prestonian, enjoying watching these and love the presentation👍
Awesome, thank you!
Regards and respect to you all from Australia.
I like your vids Bruce. I also loved seeing your stand-up shows way back when.
I'll be touring a new show in 2023
Excellent material, thank you subscribed!
I'm roughly a quarter scotch-irish. Though not really scottish or irish, I feel drawn to this mystical land of lochs and kilts.
Always find these history lessons really interesting, I have a quick question about what was said about Preston, you said it was landlocked, Preston has a port so I’m confused (I’m a Lancastrian now living in Scotland) 👌👌👌
Aye, the point has been made. The point was that they were heading for the wide open river Mersey and it's Liverpool port
Best vid I've seen about this battle. Informative & entertaining. Thanks.
I know this is off topic, but can someone explain why the rightful King and Prince Charlie were called pretenders to the throne of England and Scotland. They were the rightful heirs to the throne! I am flummoxed by this. Thank you!
They were called thar by the English and the Williamite contingent.
Excellent video.Another great job.Well done.:)
Ye, but there’s aye à ramy at weddings and funerals
Another expert on America.🙄

Yep.
How’s the football ⚽️ doing!🏴👍
Your videoes are brilliant and funny. They should be marked as addictive! 👍

Excellent presentation and great to hear the real details of our history. It never was a pure english -scottish thing. The americans should also be givem some information on their ' war of independence' Nothing is as clear cut as it seems.
@@Gary-bz1rf Far too black and white. Things were never that simplistic.
It's the coolest Scottish impersonation of morphius ever. Got me subbed. Hope you don't mind me being English ,
The best story teller in the UK... maybe the whole Empire. Great story!
😂
Why are you not on mainstream television ? You are absolutely brilliant. A complete breath of fresh air. Oh and by the way I am a wee Weegie. It would be interesting if you done a Scottish compass tour of accents. Perhaps I am being selfish with this request. It just fascinates me with what seems a short distant tweak in local dialect. I understand this can translate throughout the UK and abroad. But for such a small country and your amazing skill to marry humour and fact would Be a perfect recipe for success. Anyway just keep on impressing us with you being you.
The accent thing has crossed my mind, but I worry it's away from history
@@ScotlandHistoryTours I understand. However language of a nation is a melting pot full of history. And I do appreciate the linguistic research that you would have to do. But if you take a ten word tour using your genuine ability to narrate and entertain. This could be a hoot. No matter what. Please carry on being you. And at some point your amazing knowledge and personality will hopefully put you where to belong in front of millions.
Just scrolling through some other comments. Cannot believe the idiotic racists comments. Perhaps your educated mind threatens their Neanderthal linage and the education is too much for the solitary brain cell to process. Knobs.

Another wonderful and thoroughly educating journey with you Bruce. You should have your own Television programme and educate many Scots and "foreigners" (over the wall 😅) about Scottish history. And of course with the English history.
Fiona is great
Thanks for bringing history to life! I’ve recently moved to Scotland so I’m really interested in learning more about this fascinating country.
