Today we are unboxing the latest Seiko Prospex Chronograph, made to commemorate both 40 years since the first 1/100th of a second analog chronograph Seiko made and the World Athletics Championship in Budapest that is about to start, as Seiko is the official timekeeper.
I see it as a re-incarnation of the 2000's Kinetic Sportura Chronographs, like the one worn by Jay Leno, the SLQ007.
The watch comes in 4 variants, regular production Black dial SFJ003 - SBER003, this Panda Silver dial SFJ001 - SBER001, and two Limited editions, both limited to 4.000 pieces each, the 40th anniversary model SFJ005 - SBER005 and one made to commemorate the Athletics chamionship SFJ007 - SBER007
They all share the same movement, the newly developed solar crhonograph 8A50, that comes with 6 months of power reserve, five step motors with each hand having its own, and 3 subregisters for the stopwatch. Right one measures 1/100th of a second, the left one measures 1/10th of a second, and the top one measures seconds.
The main dial is used for telling time is also used as the minute counter for the 60 minutes that is the maximum measuring time. The cool thing is that the hour hand is hidden under the minute hand when chronograph is used so the watch becomes one multidial stopwatch, and only after you exit the chronograph mode does the hour hand go back to showing hours.
Sapphire crystal and 100m of water resistance make this a perfect everyday watch, while the bracelet looks like the one found on the Citizen Nighthawk in both look and feel.

This is probably one of the best looking chronograph ever. Seiko really did a good job with this. Daytonas look boring next to this !
they should make the top dial a moving second dial in Time mode

At least two of the hands don't seem to be properly aligned at zero, which only seems to be the Seiko trend at the moment.

I think of one thing: When you're on chronograph mode, you can't see the current time. So If you're on the chronograph mode, timing something, and press mode-button to check the time, does the chronograph continue running on the background or does it zero out? Or can you even press the mode -button with chrono running?
That's a great question!! YES, you can. While the chronograph is running pressing the mode button takes you back to main time, while the chronograph keeps running in the background.
Pressing it again, the watch jumps back to the chronograph and the hands move to continue the chronograph measurement

@Watch Geek I have a question please. Before I ask, I have to say that you really did a good job with the video, I never saw the lineage or saw some of the impressive features this had. I kind of over looked it, there is so much to appreciate, it's unreal. Now I will like to ask if the battery will ever need replacing and will the light from a regular light bulb source in my living room work?
That is a very impressive chronograph. I can't think of anything I'd need to time to hundredths of a second.....,but I'm sure I'd think of something! Lol. Excellent video!
Just bought the SFJ007 15 minutes ago transferring flights here in Taiwan. Pretty young lady let me have it for $835. The limited edition with the black face and gray looking metal work really caught my eye. First watch I’ve bought since I got my iphone4 way back when.

Yup but not FINE TUNE, only in small steps, and this is as close as i could get it to align
Sized to your wrist? Yet it looked extremely loose with the strap dangling all over the place.
Nice watch though, it would have been better if the bottom dial was just for the current time and the other 3 were just for the chrono (so the current time would always be visible).
The clasp looks like it came off of a sarb. Needs more micro adjusts. Cool looking, but I think the effect would grow old after awhile, but that's just me.
The lack of a running second hand is a big let down. Otherwise I really dig it

it's ugly and beautiful at the same time.
I don't much like it. The pushers just stick out too far from the case, for one. I have a couple of the 7A38 chronographs from the 70s and while they do have the over-complicated chronograph movements (with the wild-spinning hands), they also have day-date complications, which is what I would have liked to see on this watch - heavens, there's enough space on the dial to provide them. This thing just feels like too much wasted space, both on the dial and around the case with those sputnik pusher antenna things. I think I've come to look at analog chronographs as being fine to time things to the second, but not more granular than that. If I want or need more precision, I'll look to a digital chrono. I'm glad you like it, but it's not charming me at all.
