Decades later, modern solar powered watches come packed with virtually maintenance free utility and are great options to consider as we head into the summer months. In this guide, we cover some of the best solar powered watches on the market.

I’ve owned a Citizen Ecodrive watch for 15 years (I think the model number is BM8180-03E as they still sell it in Argos). It’s a pretty field watch-I swapped the green canvas strap for a brown leather item immediately. It still keeps time impeccably, even though the power reserve isn’t what it once was. I love it. I’m struggling to find a reason to buy another field watch as this Citizen watch has been so good. It lives on the windowsill in our bedroom to soak up the sun’s rays during weekdays, I tend to only wear it on weekends. I wear a Casio F-108w for work-I’m a welder, my watches get wrecked in work! Great article-that Timex watch is fantastic.
Solar is my go to mostly. You regularly hear of them going on for 2 decades before you have e to change the capacitor. Remarkable value for money and reliability!
My Ecodrive is 15 years old this year. If only everything in life was as reliable!

Did you find sone inconveniences for a solar watch? And what about the accuracy? @@meilyrwilliams9280
Anyone else get really excited when they see a new one of these videos up?
I have a gshock giez from 2007. Im impressed the solar let alone the radio time adjustment would last this long.
I bought an Edifice 10 years ago and it's still running smoothly, absolutely worth buying
Citizen Chronomaster. Literally the world most accurate quartz watch.
I saw online that citizen says that it will only reach it's quoted accuracy when worn 12h a day and kept between temps of 5 and 40 degres celcius. But all in all it is one of the best quartz watches out there.
@@pourchassemorgan2680Well, at least keeping it between those temps is pretty easy, wearing 12 hours maybe not as much if you have a bigger collection and swap watches frequently, but a lot of people who buy citizens just buy it for a watch to use and not bc they're a watch person, so 12 hours is realistic for those individuals
Yes and no... for a few hundred you can get a base level Casio Oceanus and it's accurate to the second as it picks up radio transmitted time a few times per day. T-200 and OCW-S100 depending on wrist size. I've had mine for years and it's never gained or lost a second... and no need for a battery change.
@@WH-hi5ew true but the chronometer is an absolute beautiful watch, where the Oceanus is a bit of plain Jane
@@Robin6512 Yup, I prefer the Citizen Chronomaster to the Grand Seiko quartz equivalent. Finishing not quite as flash (which for me is better) plus better proportioned... they also do a blue dial 38mm which looked great. Not as expensive as GS but of course a load more than the Oceanus. Am getting older so my next watch needs a cyclops - will be a Seiko I expect and not a Rolex!
A collection of 9 very beautiful watches with very detailed introductions
The Citizen Chronomaster from this Video is my daily driver for almost five years now. Since then it has never lost a second and I did not even once set the watch manually. I also did not have to replace a battery or some sort of maintenance related to the movement. The dial and glass still look like new, the bracelet got some acceptable wear but still looks good. I had to replace the clasp recently because the push mechanism was worn out - 50 bucks for a new part shipped within 3 days.
I must say the Watch is quite large on my wrist, but not too large. Just the upper end of what I can wear. I bought this one when I started to look into watches without knowing really what I'm buying - I just liked the feel and looks of it. I have grown so much into this watch and its simple needs that this one is usually the one I grab first. I leave it on when swimming or showering, commuting with my bicycle in the office or casually. I even keep this on even for motorcycle riding, knowing it's shock resistant ehough not to fall apart - more than a hundred thousand kilometers were covered on two wheels wearing the citizen.
If I ever loose this watch I'd 100% go for another Solar-powered Eco-Dive. Not sure if this exact model again, because I'm not really into the whole aircraft theme, but surely the same tech inside. The only watch that comes close to my Citizen is my Casio GW-M5610U for the same reasons, but it doesn't wear as mature as this does. My automatic watches, even the expensive ones (most expensive is an Omega AT) are only worn for special occasions and even then I use the Citizen to set them 😅
I have the Seiko Arnie reissue. Absolutely love it and wear it almost everyday.
I have a Citizen eco drive and use it for more than 20 years, still working, very reliable.
This video is awesome well done!
Great review. I have the citizen promaster tough BN0118-55E. It's quickly become my favourite go to watch.
I have more than twenty watches in the solar movement in my collection. They are all excellent, accurate and reliable. An excellent combination of quartz movement and solar energy.
Hi
can you please share list with pics
Great little lineup, I love that aqua racer. I would love for you guys to do a lineup like this, but of the best small mechanical watches.
I own the Seiko, and the gold G-SHOCK. Great watches. However I wore a different solar power Edifice daily for about 8 years. These things are indistructable. Hasn’t missed a beat yet.
Should include the Casio Lineage line. Some models are titanium, sapphire crystal, atomic, solar, LED, analog/digital, perpetual day/date, timer/stopwatch, world time, currently well under $200. Exceptional watch and value.
Excellent video and a great bunch of watches. I only have one solar watch, a Pulsar Chronograph with a motor racing theme, it's great. Of course Pulsar being a Seiko company it does have a Seiko solar movement inside. I need a couple more solars!
Tank Solarbeat is worthy to mention as well
Good list. Citizen, G-shock, Bertucci Field had them. My fav field watch is the Bertucci because of its lume and weightlessness, feather light. Awaiting a saphire glass.
Citizen eco drive Promaster is my favorite.. I dont use it much since 1990 but it still works as brand new.. half an hour in light will keep it working for months
my favorite type of watch
Love my Oceanus T200!
I have the earlier smaller version it's a great watch but unfortunately not strap friendly, otherwise would be perfect.
Relógios de excelente Qualidade, Curti muito o Orca da Citizen e o Edifice da Casio, Valeu!
More solar gem / vids if you find em! I've been getting back into Solar watches out of convenience. I don't get to wear my watches much bc of my lifestyle / work. And i can't stand having to reset all the time and functions on my mechanicals
How about the Casio High end Oceanus line up?
What how could u miss the Citizen Legendary Solar Diver ?
The speedtimer is one of the most underrated modern watch imho.
I have a G-Shock GW6900 (Solar). It's very light on the wrist. I thought I lost it once because I didn't feel it on my wrist. The atomic multiband is very convenient.
I really love the look of the Tag, but my OCD can't cope with the second hand missing the main indices. Unacceptable, compared to my used, but 'as new' £20/ $25 analogue Casio Solar watch, MRW-S300, which hits the markers bang on!
Citizen PMD 56
My favorite
thanks
I have a relatively small wrist (16.5-17 cm) and the Orca looks big on me... but I JUST LOVE THAT FREAKING WATCH!! No way I will return it or sell it even if it looks somewhat ridiculous on me. It is just too beautiful.
With Seiko SNJ025 Arnie watch out for watches produced in 2023. They have very common factory flaw - when exposed to direct sun (solar watch wtf seiko), watch resets to factory settings. had to return mine ;/
Regarding Casio Solar vs Tough Solar - they are not the same. Solar = possesses solar supplemental power, but still requires a charger. Tough Solar = can be solely powered by solar without requiring any other external charger.
You missed out the APO
The Tag is beautiful but why can't Tag make a $2,000 watch where the second hand hits all the markers? I have $80 Casios that hit all the markers, but a $2,000 watch can't?
Cartier Tank Solarbeat?
Seiko Prospex SNE573. Nicest solar diver under $500 USD aka the SunMariner
Vaer?
In theory i really like the tag solargraph because it is one of the last solar quartz high end swiss quartz watch out there. But the second hand missing the markers (saw 2 models irl) and the lack of transitions on the case (everything is beed blasted) is disappointing.
It is a minimum effort case and bracelet, with a base citizen E168 movement inside. You’re basically paying a premium for the “Tag” name.
@@Amc825 I thought it was a lajoux Perret mouvement at least
I forgot that lajoux Perret was owned by citizen my bad
I own the Solargraph and love it. Mine hits the markers spot on and build quality is excellent. Very versatile GADA
Is it me, the Tag second hand doesn't line up to the second marker? For $3000 watch, it is kinda embarrassing.
Casio Oceanus
You said "heaps of lume" and "generous amount of lume" to describe watches that only lume the hands??? My $60.00 Timex Expedition Scout Solar has lumed hands and numerals, making those other (more expensive) watches pale (using the minimum possible) in comparison.
Casio Lineage waveceptor for $200
Seiko Astron! GPS sync!
Oceanus?!
Exactly. Casio Oceanus is the best VFM watch on any price range, and it is punching way, way above its price.
seiko Astron loses 1 sec every 100,000 years according to the ads.I,m counting down. Its the KING!
Citizen owns Bulova. If they were to make a solar version of the sweep seconds 262khs Bulova precisionist movement it would be perfect
I would add Junghans Max Bill Titanium Solar, Cartier SolarBeat
Agreed! We actually had both of these guys queued up for the guide, but weren’t able to get hands on with them in time for the shoot 👍
Wristshhh watchssssshhhhhh ssshholar poor mic again 😅🙉 other than that, good video
And what this video and others like it fail to mention and that is it’s $100(AUS) to replace the battery and when the capacitor fails your screwed and when you got 15 of them it gets expensive, if I knew then what I know now, I wouldn’t have bought any.
That Tag is so overpriced it’s almost comical 😅
The reflections on crystals in the video are annoying.
Best Solar powered watches without Citizen Chronomaster on the list is blasphemy
Narrated by Keanu Reeves 😁
Lum-tec
Seiko Arnies movement been documented to be pretty unreliable
Replace both the g shocks with one GW-5000
I would say a GW-M5600A will do the job. Why add a screwback when the quality is not an issue?
This video needs to be deleted, edited and reuploaded with addition of one of Casio Oceanus models (basic ones look the best imo... T-200, S-100...).
And I'm not sure about that Orca, because Citizen has so much more Eco-drive models which are more known and which are looking far better... from dozens of Promasters to Chronomaster.
Sorry, protrek is the best.
Wrong!
“Solar energy has existed as long as the sun.” 🙄cmon. Try harder whoever writes this stuff
No seiko Astron in quartz watch list just proves this list is not well researched.
No seiko means that this list IS well-researched
Timex? 🤣
