Not even really Super. He really had declined even before then, with his best contributions probably having been the Yo! Son Goku and Friends Return OVA.
True, Gt is where we can first see some of the traits that would plague his later work but I guess Super is where everything became apparent to the general fandom.
It's just crazy to me how someone so legendary in the industry, as well as someone who's been a part of the franchise since the beginning, how not only fallen from grace, but also seems to refuse changing or improving in any way possible. At this point, I just want to see something new from Yamamuro. Something different.
I loved dbz gritty art style. The funny thing for me is that I assumed that the art style changed from saga to sage to show the characters aging lol , not cause of different animators 🤣🤣 when I was like 7 or so I thought Akira toriyama drew the anime
While I prefer Shintani's style for current Dragon Ball (DBS: Broly was an AMAZING looking movie after all.) Buu arc Yamamuro's style is still the best DB style for me outside of Toriyama's manga. Especially the work Yamamuro did in Fusion Reborn... I honestly think that Fusion Reborn is the best in terms of artstyle and a big part of that was Yamamuro. Too bad his current style seems more... stiff and plastic like... it CAN look good (BoG REALLY proved that) but not always.
That animation between Goku and Majin Vegeta is probably one of the best looking parts of all DBZ, truly amazing scenes that I can watch over and over.
DBZ 232 always stood out to me (7:45) as an all time favorite fight from the series. There was just so much more detail in the movement and attacks that felt much more like a real fight then the rest. I wish more of the series has stuff like that but considering the time it likely cost, I can understand why it wasn't more frequent.
Ahhhhhh, that explains the different looking episodes. I always thought it was based on budget reasons, not the talent of different episode directors. I noticed his episode where the ones with the important moments in each saga.
One thing old and modern Yamamuro are good at is having priorities on precision and foundation. Despite his artwork and his designs, he will always try to maintain max consistency during his involvement in an episode or a film’s production. That’s what makes him a good artist in his own style. I respect that.
Everytime when I draw I always refer to the Buu saga character sheets even the Super characters and when I try to draw in Shinatni style it just looks wayyy too close to the Yamamuro's style in the Buu saga
Shintani is more frieza saga style honestly. Takahashi is buu saga 2.0 and my favorite style thus far, keeping that nostalgic look with updated graphics/art.

My favorite animators from DBZ have to be Kazuya Hisada and Masahiro Shimanuki. Their artwork, while not completely accurate to the character model sheets, was equal if not better than Yamamuro's in my opinion. Their animation was at the top for me because of how dynamic it was. The squash and stretch, the timing of the animation, the way they drew beams, the bulky muscles, the jaws/chins. It all culminated in this raw and violent version of DBZ that defined my childhood. Super kinetic and 3D feeling if you catch my drift. I'd love to see you make a video on them, maybe together since they're so similar. Great job btw, keep it up!
He's just so good! I always love seeing the tense face Expressions and dramatic animation! You could take a simple scene of a guy powering up like Cell or Goku, and really make it shine! His Line work is fantastic as well as the execution!
Even when I was a kid watching that episode of Goku vs Vegeta I noticed a huge difference in the quality of the animation. Possibly the best cut in all of DBZ, and Yamamuro was responsible for it.
Great video. Love the fact that you used the instrumental version of “We Gotta Power,” my favorite DBZ song in the bakground. I always noticed the difference of animation in some episodes, why didn’t they keep the great one for all of them?
Awesome commentary. You surely did your research. I didn't know that Yamamuro was the guy behind the really good animation over the years of DBZ. Series and movies. Thumbs up.

Yamamuro like many animators in the industry still draw on paper so these issues aren't really to do with adapting to working digitally. Also, you can see his style regressing in the late 90's/early 2000s so this is a problem that unfortunately extends much further back than Super.

@@xenogen372 boruto huh... I guess dull doesnt equate plastic...
He was the original king at dragon ball z in terms of art and animation
Yup he was an amazing legend but his work went down now I’m not saying the animation is bad i’m just thinking you don’t have enough time to make the animation good it’s just not up to par with his old work
Imo the best animator of Z was the one who animated Goku vs Cell (good part), Cell vs Gohan Kamehameha battle and many more great scenes of Buu saga
I feel that if Yamamuro were given a second chance, he could possibly have time to refine his digital style and make something that actually looked good.
Yamamuro like many animators in the industry still draw on paper so these issues aren't really to do with adapting to working digitally. Also, you can see his style regressing in the late 90's/early 2000s so this is a problem that unfortunately extends much further back than Super.
@@forgottenrelics1197 But he did imply that he would at least do things differently if he would return to DBS. A boy can dream.¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hes a legend in key and inbetweening ive learned a lot from him iam an animator too but beginner i did posted my dbz side story please if you want to support me
Either retire a legend or work long enough to see yourself decline.
DBZ Freezer's resurrection was really good make art.
you should do a collab with AnimeAjay
That would be cool but I've still got a lot to learn before I could do a video with him haha
Never knew there were different key animators simultaniously working on the dbz show but thats explaines why sometimes some character felt "off" for me. Yamamuros work is distinguishible.
God, imagine if Super had this level of quality and attention to detail. It would be untouchable
He’s the reason super doesn’t look good to be fair
@@Ealais76it's not just him, Yukihiro Kitano = trash
💀
I remeber playing dragon ball raging blast 2 and i seen some quotes and they had his art work in their of some
dragon ball z characters standing and turning around and aside
And also was he the cutscene animator for dragon ball z ultimate tenkaichi
You are good
Ever thought about taking a look at Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru's _Dragon Ball_ work?
Yep I plan to do either him or Tate next for this series!
